Knjiga se bavi utvrđivanjem koji bi od tekstova sačuvanih u fundusu hrvatske crkvenoslavenske liturgijske književnosti (od 13. do 16. stoljeća) mogli pripadati izrazito staroj književnoj tradiciji koja je nastajala prevođenjem latinskih tekstova na hrvatskome tlu do konca 12. stoljeća. Po prepoznatljivoj osobini da se u tim tekstovima Isusa naziva starim hrvatskim imenom Spas najstarija je književna tradicija prevođenja s latinskoga na hrvatski crkvenoslavenski jezik primjereno nazvana Spas-tradicijom.

Resumen: El texto quiere ofrecer una interpretación de la heráldica del duque de Lerma. Valido de Felipe III y verdadero muñidor de una intensa campaña de autopromoción y génesis de su propia imagen. Una forma de self fashioning avant la lettre. Para ello nos fijamos en el despliegue heráldico que el valido realizó desde sus años como duque de Gandía a hasta su ascenso al valimiento. Debemos entender que el valimiento era una condición anómala de la política en la Edad Moderna y que Lerma lo situó dentro de las coordenadas de la cultura visual de las noblezas europeas de la primera modernidad, haciendo de su heráldica, una hipotiposis de sus virtudes heroicas y linajísticas.
The text proposes an interpretation of the Duke of Lerma’s shrewd use of heraldry. As Philip III’s favourite, Lerma launched an ambitious self-promotional campaign shaping his own image in what may be aptly described as self-fashioning avant la lettre. We shall analyse Lerma’s heraldic displays from his early years as Duke of Gandía up to his rise to power. The status of royal favourite was nonstandard in early modern polities. Yet Lerma made it part of the visual culture shared by Europe’s nobility at the time. His coat of arms was transformed into a hypotyposis of his own heroic virtues and those of the Sandoval lineage

In 1716, the years-long legislative work on a single comprehensive organizational and penal legal regulation designed for the Russian army came to an end, crowned with the title The Military Code of Peter I of 1716. Tsar Peter I may have had reason to be satisfied, for his soldiers received a very clear document, divided into three books combined with one another, which very clearly regulated all issues related to the organization of service and daily soldier life in the camp or garrison. It should be noted that the Petrine regulation, like other such European legislation at the time, despite its very clear military purpose, was constructed with reference to fundamental aspects of the Christian religion, and in legal matters, in addition to soldiers, it also applied to the civilian population. Nevertheless, all soldiers, both officers and privates, were required to take an oath in God's name, to serve the tsar faithfully and sacrificially (even sacrificing their own lives). Breaking the oath, as well as committing other offences, was punishable by the appropriate sanctions set forth in the Military articles with a brief commentary, which is the military penal code, contained in the first part of Book II of the code (in the second part of this book, namely the Brief presentation of trials or cases, the mode of trial held in a court-martial was described, where the proceedings were also held in relation to the sphere of religion). According to the lawmaker’s assumptions, soldiers should live an
honest and pious life on a daily basis in accordance with the prevailing norms of the Christian religion, with oversight left to officers and Orthodox, as well as Protestant, clergy serving in the ranks of the army. Thus, criminal sanctions, enshrined in 209 articles, were imposed on all, both soldiers and civilians, committing any violation of state law and God’s law. Equally important were the provisions of Book I, where issues related to the organization of the pastoral service and the responsibilities of the clergy located in the various regiments of the tsarist army were covered.
It is noteworthy that the assumptions set forth in The Military Code of Peter I
of 1716 regarding the organization of the army and the training of soldiers,
despite their repeated modifications, survived throughout the 18th century and were used in the military regulations introduced by Peter I’s successors. Much longer, as until the mid-19th century, Peter’s military penal code, the Military articles with a brief commentary, remained in force.

A partir de la documentación localizada en el Archivo General de Simancas, aportamos un inédito listado de los bastimen- tos, pertrechos y artillería malogradas en la Bahía de Cádiz con motivo del ataque por las tropas anglo-holandesas en 1596. La quema y pérdida de galeones, fragatas, pataches y mercaderías en julio de 1596, supuso un fuerte varapalo económico para la administración castellana que cayó inmersa en una nueva bancarrota. Con este artículo se muestra una minuciosa relación de las mercancías, artillería y pertrechos destruidos, así como denominaciones de embarcaciones inexistentes en las fuentes bibliográficas sobre el saqueo de Cádiz en 1596.

Based on the documentation located in the General Archive of Simancas, we provide an unpublished list of the supplies, provisions and artillery lost in the Bay of Cadiz during the attack by the Anglo-Dutch troops in 1596. The burning and loss of galleons, frigates, pataches and merchandise in July 1596 was a severe economic blow to the Castilian administration, which was plunged into bankruptcy. This article provides a detailed account of the merchandise, artillery and supplies destroyed, as well as the names of vessels that do not exist in the bibliographical sources on the sacking of Cadiz in 1596.

(Rev 4:1-11) The following scene of the fourth and fifth chapters depicts Yehovah upon his heavenly "throne," with his Church encircled around him, to whom he reveals his secret counsel. 1 Durham explains that the scene is meant to impress upon the reader the majesty of God, as similar scenes do in Isaiah and Ezekiel. 2 More particularly, though, we may conjecture that the scene in chapter 5 corresponds to Daniel's "Son of man" going before the "Ancient of Days" in heaven. The support for this hypothesis is, firstly, that this scene makes regular allusion to the prophecy, and secondly, it is difficult to distinguish them since they theologically relate so much. We might say that this episode is outside of history and time, yet in relationship to both through the "seven seals," and referring back to the atonement of Christ. 3 His sacrificial death is recalled as the basis of redemption, throughout the Apocalypse. 4 10 Rev 10:4.

À travers son examen des vies de Salamone et Lazzaro Corcos, banquiers sépharades baptisés -devenus Ugo et Gregorio Boncompagni -, et de l'ensemble de leur famille, incluant fils, neveux, nièces et petits-enfants, Isabelle Poutrin propose un éclairage original et novateur sur les conversions volontaires autant que forcées, en explorant leurs répercussions économiques, entre poursuite de certains avantages et inconvénients familiaux. Le livre d'Isabelle Poutrin reconstitue la richesse de la société baroque romaine et offre un tableau vivace et nuancé de son tissu social complexe. À deux reprises, les ouvrages que Luis López consacre à Saragosse suscitent de fortes réactions au sein des communautés savantes locales. Le statut social, mais peut-être surtout l’opportunisme éditorial de cet ancien pâtissier, qui glorifie le passé civique et sacré de la ville pour offrir à la municipalité l’immortalité de ses « trophées » séculaires, irritent et inquiètent certains professionnels du passé, menacés par l’irruption de cet outsider. Alors même que l’écriture de l’histoire politique récente de Saragosse s’empêtrait dans l’embarrassant souvenir d’une révolte ayant terni l’image du royaume et que l’histoire ecclésiastique et religieuse aragonaise n’allouait à la ville-même qu’une faible place, les opérations chorographiques de López trouvent un public à l’heure de la Contre-Réforme et de l’engouement pour les antiquités romaines. Saragosse pouvait ainsi opportunément se définir comme une seconde Rome, fière de ses institutions, honorée par la venue de saint Jacques, l’apparition de la vierge et l’édification du Pilar, premier temple marial de la chrétienté.
Les réactions suscitées au sein de la communauté savante locale sous le coup des menées de Francisco Andrés, juriste polygraphe visant la charge de chroniqueur officiel du royaume, permettent de capter sur le vif des réseaux de sociabilité urbaine articulés sur une construction collaborative du passé dans l’écriture, l’échange d’information et d’artefacts faisant intervenir des érudits, des historiographes, des nobles numismates et bibliophiles, des clercs, des poètes et des polygraphes de tout crin. Au gré des critiques qui accablent le pâtissier, traité d’ignorant, de faussaire et de menteur et qui dessinent en creux les contours de l’activité historienne, la communauté savante se positionne. « Plume d’oie » contre « plume d’aigle », « trophées » contre « truffes », les acteurs remodèlent dans le feu de l’action identité sociale et identité urbaine à travers l’écriture du passé.

Tales armas pueden encontrarse en monedas y en documentos oficiales correspondientes a su reinado, pero su supervivencia en una fachada puede considerarse como excepcional y única. Napoleón puso en marcha un nuevo sistema heráldico que, al contrario de lo que ocurría con el medieval, quedaba circunscrito a la nueva élite dominante. Su incursión en la heráldica española viene representada por las armas que estudiamos en este artículo.

The travel book “Aus Dalmatien” by the German writer Ida von Düringsfeld (Prague 1857) bears witness to Marulić’s 19th century popularity outside the domestic framework. Namely, in her travel records the German writer includes the legend of Marulić’s allegedly sinful life and conversion, immediately confuting it. Also, in a text appended to the book by her husband Otto von Reinsberg, we find a short biography of the Croatian poet, gathered from different literary sources. Both facts testify to the interest that foreign authors have taken in the Croatian writer

Faire la police, le policier, se policer : la déclinaison du terme « police » le montre, ce dernier ne saurait seulement être entendu au sens institutionnel, mais aussi à travers ses nombreux systèmes signifiants. Ce volume réunit ainsi des contributions qui s'essayent à cette prospection : peut-on faire jouer cette idée de « police » comme opérateur de savoir ? Des ordonnances de La Reynie, premier lieutenant général de la police sous Louis XIV, à la fiction française contemporaine, en passant par des auteurs comme Bertereau, Sade, Potocki, Balzac ou Konaté, comment la police peut faire oeuvre de machine à produire du sens ? Parce que la police est autorité et régulation, elle repose sur des constellations de symboles, de conventions, de modalités poétiques : la police peut être pensée, aussi bien dans la vie urbaine que dans la fiction littéraire ou encore dans ses modalités de constitution historique. La police est alors production signifiante, créatrice d'énoncés et de symboles. On peut aussi faire du « policier » une force de structuration textuelle et d'ordre systémique. Enfin, le policier est un régime d'enquête, de détection et de lecture. C'est par ces trois empans que les contributions de ce volume se saisissent de la question du « policier » pour en éprouver les possibilités interprétatives et créatrices de sens.

The central problem of this study was that despite the government efforts coupled by donor aid to enhance rural water projects sustainability, performance has continued to deteriorate with high project malfunctioning. Causes of the high project failure have not been adequately discussed; hence minimal intervention. To this end, the project purpose was to establish the determinants of rural water projects sustainability in Kenya with a focus on NGO supported projects. The study considered sustainability as the dependent variable and sector policy, post implementation impact evaluation, choice of technology and water committee management skills as the independent variables.    A descriptive research design was adopted and stratified sampling utilized.  Both qualitative and quantitative data analysis was used to analyze the research data.  The study established that there is a strong positive influence on sustainability of rural water sustainability attributable to units of change of a...

El estudio de la escultura española de la Edad Moderna ha permanecido lastrado durante mucho tiempo por la condición periférica a la que se la vinculó, al igual que todas aquellas producciones externas al fenómeno central europeo. Aunque a partir de los años setenta del siglo pasado estas lecturas regidas por el binomio “centro-periferia” se fueron superando mediante interpretaciones menos jerárquicas y menos pacíficas, donde entraban en juego todo tipo de intereses personales y corporativos, aún hoy siguen manteniéndose lecturas lineales –asentadas sobre la primacía económica y política de algunas ciudades– que privilegian la actividad de determinados focos respecto de otros.

Esta jornada pretende sobre todo recorrer esas florecientes periferias, tan
ricas en matices y en maestros de original maniera, pero también conocer
las dialécticas empresariales y corporativas que condicionaban éxitos y fracasos. Todo ello, escultores y sus estrategias profesionales, serán objeto de análisis para ofrecer un panorama paralelo o alternativo a la visión tradicional de los escultores hegemónicos del siglo XVI.

These sources allow us to present the cultural context of this visit and offer new information on the role of Gdansk as a center of natural science in the 18th century. (The scholarly edition 'Summarischer Bericht' PAN BG rkps 699/ is also attached as an annex to the article).

Na početku Trimalhionove gozbe (str. 206) boja tinte se mijenja, a k tomu je rukopis na str. 206-208 (tj. do kraja sveščića) sitniji negoli u prethodnim tekstovima; od str. 209 nadalje opet je uobičajene veličine. Pisar dodaje broj stihova na kraju svake pjesme te zbroj stihova na kraju svake pjesničke knjige (iznimka je Petronijev tekst, gdje se daje samo broj stihova na kraju svake pjesme; Cena ima malo stihova, pa se u tom dijelu broj stihova uopće ne bilježi). U radu se pokazuje kako prvo izdanje Marulićeve Judite (1521) može biti korisno pomagalo u priređivanju ostalih Marulićevih pjesničkih tekstova na hrvatskom, koji su sačuvani samo u rukopisnim prijepisima. Polazi se od teze da je prvo izdanje najbolja aproksimacija Marulićevih hrvatskih autografa, koji nisu sačuvani. Ta se teza argumentira podatcima iz paratekstova Marulićevih latinskih izdanja te iz Marulićevih pisama, iz kojih je jasno da su latinska izdanja slagana i korigirana prema piščevu autografu; analogijom se to može zaključiti i za Juditu. Kolofon prvotiska Judite pokazuje da je uloga Petreta Srićića u tom izdanju bila urednička, a to znači da se u Veneciji brinuo za pripremu sloga, vjerojatno i za korekturu. U drugom dijelu rada potanko se prikazuje Marulićev usus scribendi, tj. ortografska, jezična i metrička svojstva Judite. Brojna dosljedna rješenja u prvotisku potvrđuju da je Marulić posjedovao barem djelomično uspostavljen ortografski i jezični sustav te da se dosljedno držao nekih načela u versifikaciji. U trećem dijelu na primjerima se pokazuje kako Judita može biti priređivački orijentir. Naime, za ostale Marulićeve hrvatske stihove načelno treba pretpostaviti da su u autografnom zapisu sadržavali ista rješenja kakva nalazimo u Juditi. Iz takve pretpostavke proizlazi priređivački postupak: on neće biti puka transkripcija zapisa u rukopisu, nego će težiti restituciji Marulićeva načina pisanja koliko nam je poznat iz Judite. U trećem dijelu na primjerima se pokazuje kako Judita može biti priređivački orijentir. Naime, za ostale Marulićeve hrvatske stihove načelno treba pretpostaviti da su u autografnom zapisu sadržavali ista rješenja kakva nalazimo u Juditi. Iz takve pretpostavke proizlazi priređivački postupak: on neće biti puka transkripcija zapisa u rukopisu, nego će težiti restituciji Marulićeva načina pisanja koliko nam je poznat iz Judite. Četvrti dio rada donosi prethodne napomene uz kritičko izdanje dvaju tekstova koji se tiskaju u prilogu (Prikazan'je historije svetoga Panuncija i Utiha nesriće).

Zanimljivo je da je katalog pijanaca i izjelica u šestom pjevanju uokviren ovakvim napomenama. Početak mu je popraćen rubnim tekstom: Uz V, 95: »Govoren'je protiv zalihu žartju i pitju.« Na kraju pak slijedi moralistička poanta popraćena bilješkom:

Dedications are marginal and apparently unimportant zones of a text. Yet, Marulić’s dedication in the Judita is an exceptionally interesting and important example of »autoreferential« composition in which our writer externalized his own poetics in the form of an epistle. Though it draws on metaphors and common places of the day, it is remarkable for its thematic as well as non–thematic aspects, as a text »in the service of« the Judita and as an independent composition. Also, it is the earliest known mature poetic treatise in the old Croatian literature. In this autothematic text Marulić discussed three functions of any literary work: poetic,rhetoric and especially stylistic, paying special attention to the epic that follows,particularly to the question of its style, but not underestimating the importance of the author or reader. The attention which he paid to the composition of this dedication makes us conclude that he considered it an important element of the epic itself

Quatorze ans aprés la création, enAndalousie, d'un tribunal d'Inquisition approuvé par le pape Sixte IV, l'édit publié dans le palais grenadin de laAlhambra constatait que « vivent dans nos domaines des mauvais chrétiens qui ont judaTsé et ont commis une apostasie contre la sainte foi catholique, due surtout aux relations entre juifs et chrétiens ». Le texte affirma que les juifs continuaient de << subvertir la sainte foi catholique >>, et qu'ils << instruisent les chrétiens dans les cérémonies et croyances de leurs lois, circoncisant leurs fils et leur donnant des livres pour leurs priéres, et les initiant auxjours dejeüne [...] leur faisant savoir en pleine connaissance qu'il n'existe pas d'autre loi ou vérité en dehors de celle [de MoTse] >>. C'est pourquoi, « aprés longue délibération, il fut accordé que tous les juifs et juives doivent abandonner nos royaumes et qu'il ne leur soit jamais permis d'y revenirl>>. Les juifs se virent octroyés quatre mois pour vendre leurs biens et organiser leur départ.L'édit d'expulsion ne concemait bien évidemment pas les baptisés, et beaucoup se convertirent, soit immédiatement soit plus tard afin de revenir en Espagne, grossissant ainsi le groupe des conversos. Dix ans plus tard, en 1502,Ies musulmans durent faire le méme choix et, majoritairement, optérent pour le baptéme.Le but avoué des édits de 1492 et t502 était d'opérer une séparation définitive entre juifs ou musulmans et chrétiens. Et sa cause primordiale la peur de la contamination. D'une contamination dans un seul sens, du christianisme aujudaisme ou á l'islam.

Cette thèse s'intéresse aux motifs zoologiques figurés sur les cartes géographiques produites en Europe à l'époque moderne. Le point de départ repose sur l'hypothèse que l'animal n'est pas seulement là pour combler un blanc, ni que son rôle est exclusivement décoratif, mais qu'en fonction de son positionnement sur la carte et de son association avec un espace géographique déterminé, il est utilisé pour véhiculer un savoir zoologique, caractériser un territoire, ou pour construire une certaine vision du monde. Dans cet objectif, l'animal est envisagé à la fois comme un signe et une image. En croisant des perspectives spatiales (l'Europe et les autres parties du monde) et temporelles (de 1500 à 1800), et en étudiant les sources géographiques au prisme d'autres supports du savoir naturaliste (livres d'histoire naturelle, livres de voyage, catalogues de cabinets de curiosité), l'objectif est également de positionner la carte géographique au sein des différentes formes de « récits » ou « d'images » qui écrivent et décrivent le monde. Enfin, étant entendu que la carte géographique est une représentation politique du monde, la dernière partie explore des enjeux de domination : de l'homme sur l'animal, en utilisant la carte géographique comme source originale pour une étude géohistorique des relations homme-animal ; de l'Europe sur les territoires extra-européens, à travers la mise en lumière de l'animal comme élément de la construction d'espaces idéologiques, exotiques ou imaginaires. L'objectif de cette thèse est ainsi de produire une réflexion géohistorique renouvelée sur le statut de l'iconographie animale en démontrant qu'elle fait partie intégrante du discours géographique produit par les cartographes de la première modernité. Elle s'inscrit à la croisée de plusieurs champs disciplinaires : histoire de la cartographie et de la géographie, histoire de l'édition, histoire de l'art et histoire des sciences, liées à la question des relations homme-animal (« géographie humanimale »). L'analyse s'appuie sur la création puis l'exploitation d'une base de données recensant 7 765 animaux sur 1 332 cartes et globes de toutes les parties du monde et 61 autres sources du savoir naturaliste.

U radu se razmatra tema ženskih junakinja u biblijsko-verilgijanskom epu Judita i religioznoj poemi Suizana Marka Marulića. Naglasak je u ovom radu na analizi junačkih pothvata starozavjetnih junakinja, te kršćanskim moralnim vrijednostima kojima se rad uvelike posvećuje. Pored dominirajuće renesansne poetike, uvođenjem petrarkističkih motiva u opisu ženskih likova, Marulić nasljeđuje i domaću tradiciju i antičku. U radu su analizirane vrline koje su potkrepljenje citatima iz samih djela kako bi se dokazalo njihovo junaštvo.In this literaly work in the focus are female protagonists from the biblical virgilian epic Judita and religious poem Susana from author Marko Marulić. The old Semitic story of Ahiqar, a man at the court of Assyrian king Sennacherib, was very popular among the Slavic medieval literatures. The Slavic version of this oriental story, according to some scholars, was translated during the 11th century from the Greek original in Bulgaria or in Russia. The complete redaction of the story, signifi cantly revised in the Christian manner, is preserved in a few Russian and Serb manuscripts, from the end of the 15th and the beggining of the 16th century. The oldest Croatian version originates from the Croatian Glagolitic Petris Miscellany (1468)
with the title Slovo premudrosti Akirove. Similar more recent manuscript versions can be found both in the Cyrillic Dubrovnik’s Libro od mnozijeh razloga (1520) and in Derečkaj Miscellany (1621/22) written in the Latin script. These Croatian versions contain many sentences and aphorisms, mostly Christianised and moralised content, interpolated within the original narration.
Stara semitska pripovijest o mudrom Akiru, knjigoznancu asirsko-babilonskoga cara Sinahheriba (7. st. pr. Kr.), bila je vrlo popularna u slavenskim srednjovjekovnim književnostima. Slavenska verzija ove orijentalne priče mogla je, prema nekim autorima, biti prevedena s nepoznatoga grčkoga predloška u Rusiji (u 11. – 12. stoljeću) ili u Bugarskoj (u 10. – 11. stoljeću). Potpuna redakcija priče, već znatno prerađene u kršćanskom duhu, sačuvana je u više kasnijih slavenskih prijepisa i rukopisa s kraja 15. i početka 16. stoljeća. Najstarija hrvatska verzija pripovijetke nalazi se u hrvatskoglagoljskom Petrisovu zborniku (1468) pod naslovom Slovo premudrosti Akirove. Paralelni tekstovi čitaju se u hrvatskoćiriličnom, dubrovačkom Libru od mnozijeh razloga (1520) i u latiničnom Derečkajevu zborniku (1621.– 1622.). Iako u odnosu na druge južnoslavenske tekstove, glagoljska i ćirilična Priča o premudrome Akiru pripadaju istoj redakciji, tekstološkom usporedbom svih hrvatskih verzija mogu se proširiti zaključci o povijesti teksta ove srednjovjekovne pripovijetke. U hrvatskim su tekstovima mnoge pouke, sentencije i aforizmi, pretežito kristijaniziranoga moralnopoučnoga sadržaja, umetnuti u fabularno pripovijedanje.

The speech aims to start a series of meetings devoted to fortifications in the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia. The topic is relatively unknown. The author wants to change this and bring this issue closer to the audience. At the first meeting, he talked about the fortress in Mitau (Latvian Jelgava), considered the prince's most important residence.

Uroczystość złożenia przysięgi wojskowej jest nie tylko podniosłym i widowiskowym wydarzeniem, ale przede wszystkim momentem, w którym żołnierz zaciąga zobowiązania wpisujące się w istotę jego profesjonalnej i etycznej służby. W opracowaniu dokonano formalno-dogmatycznej analizy i oceny prawa regulującego przysięgę wojskową, zaczynając od okresu II RP, a koncentrując się na czasach współczesnych. Niniejsze studium pokazuje zmiany, jakie zachodziły w rocie przysięgi wojskowej na przestrzeni ponad wieku, na które wpływ miały czynniki polityczne, społeczne, międzynarodowe i militarne. Komparatystyczne zestawienie aktualnego tekstu przysięgi wojskowej z rotą przysięgi (ślubowania) funkcjonariuszy służb mundurowych unaocznia jego treściową nieoptymalność. Autor konkluduje, że realizacja ratio legis stojącego u podstaw tytułowej instytucji prawnej w pierwszej kolejności zależy od zinternalizowania przez żołnierza wartości, cnót i postaw, o których stanowią deklamowane przez niego podczas
zaprzysiężenia słowa roty.

Après avoir montré, à partir d’exemples concrets, comment s’est mise en place en Lorraine la législation relative à l’exhumation de trésors antiques, l’étude se concentre sur les deux principaux collectionneurs de médailles du temps de Charles III : le médecin Antoine Le Pois (v.1515-1575) et le bénédictin Clément Thévenin (v.1520-1574), l’un et l’autre se connaissant bien puisqu’ils avaient des maisons voisines, situées dans la grande rue de Saint-Nicolas-de-Port.
Le protestant Antoine Le Pois, poète et traducteur latin à ses heures, a exercé une grande influence auprès de jeunes auteurs et artistes, comme Jacques Grévin, Nicolas Clément et Pierre Woeiriot. On restitue son environnement familial, son rôle à la cour ducale, et on signale au passage certaines sources littéraires curieuses de son célèbre "Discours" sur les médailles. En annexe, on fournit une traduction commentée de sa lettre latine à Ortelius (Nancy, 25 mars 1575).
Quant à Clément Thévenin, religieux de La Charité-sur-Loire, prieur en région parisienne puis à Saint-Nicolas-de-Port dont il était originaire, aumônier de la duchesse de Lorraine et chanoine de la collégiale de Vaudémont, il a rempli diverses missions pour le duc Charles III après 1570. Dans les années 1550, il s'était rendu à Rome, sans doute à la suite du cardinal Robert de Lenoncourt, qui était son supérieur direct comme prieur de La Charité et qui participait aux conclaves. Thévenin fut un certain temps abréviateur à la cour pontificale. C'est en Italie qu'il aurait constitué une partie de sa collection de médailles, que Charles III a rachetée à ses héritiers en janvier 1576. Thévenin était l’oncle maternel du médecin Nicolas Guibert, bien connu pour ses positions contre l’alchimie transmutatoire.

In the 16th century, antique medals discovered during excavations and building sites became part of curiosity cabinets. Princes and private individuals built up collections. Markets and circuits were organised. On the other hand, the medals were of interest to the more learned, who considered them essential to understanding the past. Amateurs and historians thus laid the foundations for what would much later be known as numismatics. In the Lorraine of Duke Charles III, the only surviving work in this field is the "Discours sur les médailles et gravures antiques", a posthumous work by court physician Antoine Le Pois. His enthusiasm as a collector and his taste for antiquities were shared by the Duke himself, who had encouraged him to write, and also by the Benedictine monk Clément Thévenin, whom he knew well and who, like him, had built up a rich medallion collection.
