Writing about a Scottish Calvinist diplomatic network at the centre of some of Lutheran Sweden's most important diplomatic endeavours in the early seventeenth century may seem a niche subject at best. After all, it remains a commonly held belief that it was against the law to be anything other than a Lutheran to live and work in Sweden in the era of Sigismund Vasa (reigned 1593-1599), Karl IX (reigned 1604-1611), or Gustav II Adolf (reigned 1611-1632). As a fully Lutheran confessional state, the entrusting of sensitive diplomatic duties to Calvinist diplomats, ambassadors, clergymen, and spies would somehow seem anomalous. It was, of course, quite normal to welcome ambassadors and political leaders of other faiths into the Swedish realmhow else could Sweden conduct any diplomatic business with non-Lutheran states otherwise? Indeed, as Daniel Riches has observed in a Swedish context, the Northern European diplomatic class 'transcended the narrow boundaries of state, dynasty and confession.' 1 It is certainly incontestable that a particular cohort of Scottish Calvinists operated at the heart of the Swedish diplomatic machine in the time period being considered. Through their diplomatic activities, they in turn were able to override any objection to the retention of their confession of faith by the Swedish Church, or any organ of government. Religious Conflicts in Hegyalja in the Second Half of the 17th Century

The religious doctrines of the Reformation, which began in Germany, quickly reached the territory of the Kingdom of Hungary, including the Hegyalja region. This study presents the impact of these doctrines on Hegyalja.

Plus périlleuse encore est celle de l’étude des officiers de plume, corps encore très méconnu en ce qui concerne la période pré-colbertienne. Les études ou développements à leur sujet se réduisent tout juste à quelques
pages, et ne traitent pour l’essentiel que de considérations très générales centrées sur les seuls intendants ou trésoriers généraux de la Marine. Il nous a semblé dès lors très intéressant, à partir de quelques éléments archivistiques, de tenter de débroussailler le terrain et de dresser une première esquisse du rôle, ainsi que du statut social de l’écrivain des galères, dans la première partie du XVIIe siècle.

Using a recently discovered private merchant archive (the Archivio Adami-Lami in Florence, Italy), this article reconstructs the Acre Consul Controversy, a diplomatic dispute over the appointment of a Tuscan merchant, Francesco Adami, as the first English vice-consul of the Ottoman port of Acre. Through a micro-spatial case study, documenting the emerging rivalry between European ‘nations’ and their consular representatives in an Ottoman port city, this article contributes to understanding the power of space in early modern Mediterranean politics. First, it analyzes the interplay between the more institutionalized and corporate political practices typical of early modern Europe (embodied in the office of the ‘national’ consulate) and the more informal and flexible political practices of the Ottoman empire. Second, it situates key elements of this diplomatic controversy within a particular, clearly delineated semi-public space: Acre's Khan al-Ifrānj, a residential warehouse exclusively used by European merchants.

The book is organized in two volumes, the first covering the years 1500 to 1834 (the definitive end of the “Absolute Monarchy”) and the second the years 1834 to 2000, thus spanning four political regimes.
The two volumes have the same structure, which aims to study all aspects of the institution: “National legal framework and internal regulations”, “Brothers, leaders and workers”, “Income, expenditure and assets”, “Social action”, “Religious action” and “Artistic heritage”.

Neste capítulo é efetuada a análise da gestão financeira e patrimonial da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Coimbra desde a sua fundação, em 1500, até ao final da época a que a historiografia portuguesa convencionou designar por Moderna e que termina com o triunfo definitivo do Constitucionalismo, em 1834.

O objetivo desta dissertacao e estudar a constituicao do olhar holandes a partir da visualizacao da paisagem colonial nas telas do pintor Frans Post. O tema deste trabalho e perceber a constituicao de um mundo colonial por meio das telas de paisagens de Frans Post, buscando entender este mundo pelos conceitos naturais e humanos representados nas pinturas do artista. Ele foi o primeiro pintor a retratar as paisagens sul-americanas quando veio embarcado, para o Pernambuco, com a comitiva do governador holandes da colonia, o principe Joao Mauricio de Nassau, quando tinha 24 anos, ficando responsavel por representar as vistas da colonia para os holandeses. O texto reflete sobre a construcao visual dos aspectos naturais e humanos na paisagem do artista holandes e como este passou a compor um imaginario do colonizador sobre o estranho mundo americano. and the late Jerry Bentley. Jerry Bentley and his world history program were what lured me to study at UH and my years working under him, while few, were tremendously rewarding. The World History program at Hawaii proved to be a dynamic intellectual community that aided me in more ways that can be counted. My interest in the Acapulco-Manila galleon trade began back in 2007 at San Diego State University while working under David Christian and Paula De Vos, both of whom helped me set the groundwork for this study as an MA thesis. Os editores PRÉSENTATION Le présent volume offre la publication des actes du colloque international tenu à Tomar, dans le Convento de Cristo, du 3 au 5 novembre 2016. Cet encontre eut comme point de départ une idée très simple: la constatation que, au cours du temps, surtout depuis le Moyen Âge et spécialement à notre époque, l'incompréhension des différences culturelles et religieuses réciproques a été et continue à être la source de malentendus, conflits et guerres. Durant les dernières deux décennies, la recherche scientifique a traité des questions liées à la coexistence ou, au contraire, au conflit de civilisations au Moyen Âge, en se focalisant sur la thématique de l'Autre, entendu comme l'ennemi ou l'antagoniste. Le colloque s'est inséré dans ce courant d'études, en proposant toutefois une approche différente et plus détaillée. En effet, il s'est concentré sur un aspect plus spécifique de la thématique, ou bien sur la perception de l'Autre, du Prochain, culturellement structuré sur des bases différentes, politiquement dominant ou soumis (chrétiens et musulmans, grecs et latins), rebelle (hérétiques) ou simplement voisin (communauté juive), appartenant à un groupe religieux ou ethnique ou à une catégorie sociale diverse (moine, étranger, chevalier, voyageur etc.), dans un "jeu de miroirs" et des regards croisés. Cet encontre a cherché d'éviter des réflexions génériques sur des thématiques comme la tolérance ou la conflictualité au Moyen Âge, en proposant, au contraire, une exploration de la perception de l'Autre et/ou du Différent de soi, documentée par des cas concrets, quelquefois atypiques, et accompagnée par des "jugements", aspirations, normes, curiosités-qui peuvent être exprimés par exemple dans des textes littéraires, juridiques ou à travers les oeuvres d'art-sur l'être et sur le comportement des communautés ou des personnes observées. Le colloque eut une approche pluridisciplinaire et transversale et était organisé sur la base de grands blocs thématiques en dialogue entre eux: Pour une définition de l'inclusion et de l'exclusion de l'Autre; L'Autre comme expression de Proximité; L'Autre par antonomase: la Femme. De cette manière, plusieurs champs de recherche, comme l'histoire médiévale tout court, l'histoire de l'art, l'histoire du genre, la littérature, la géographie et la théologie ont été réunis dans un ensemble cohérent. Le colloque a vu la participation de douze spécialistes provenant d'Espagne, Estonie, France, Italie et Portugal-dix textes sont publiés dans le présent volume-, représentant des secteurs de recherche et des traditions scientifiques différentes. Chaque auteur a travaillé sur une propre thématique, en trouvant des correspondances et des confirmations dans les propositions des autres chercheurs, ce qui a fini par créer une communion d'intentions, souhaitable mais pas automatique. Aussi bien les travaux présentés durant le colloque que les discussions ayant suivi les présentations ont permis un ajournement de l'état de recherche et le lancement d'une série d'idées originales et innovatrices. Sans vouloir se vanter, on peut constater que le volume, placé dans l'ensemble de la production historiographique sur le sujet, offre un aperçu très cohérent et systématique et quasiment inédit sur la perception de l'Autre. Cela est du à l'adresse des auteurs, parmi les meilleurs spécialistes de leurs domaines, mais aussi à la volonté d'examiner la thématique depuis ses racines, dans un ample arc du temps et dans un espace géographique vaste. With Good Hope, One is Welcomed into Our Town": Citizenship Rights in Rimaszombat (1796-1848). This study focuses on the significance attributed to citizenship rights in the privileged market town of Rimaszombat and how the use of these rights led to social differentiation among the population. Rimaszombat was one of the few settlements that, even before the 1840 Act VII, attempted to secure the permanent redemption of feudal obligations, services, and taxes. However, the town's efforts were not entirely successful; the Royal Council did not approve their redemption agreement with their secular landlords, though this had a significant impact on the use of citizenship rights within the town. Through a systematic analysis of records from 1796 to 1848, this study examines the number of citizens, their social composition, place of origin, and the role of citizenship rights in the town.

L’exercice biographique est-il le moyen le plus pertinent pour approcher
Louis XIV ? Beaucoup d’historiens en doutent, qui regardent la biographie
comme un genre factice, postulant l’unité de la personnalité et la cohérence
dans le déroulement d’une existence, un genre plus proche de la littérature
que de l’histoire. Dans le cas d’une vie et d’un règne d’une longueur
exceptionnelle, des études plus resserrées dans le temps ou portant sur un
aspect particulier du gouvernement peuvent apparaître plus utiles.
La rédaction d’une biographie de Louis XIV impose donc de prendre
doublement parti. C’est d’abord embrasser le parti de la synthèse ou de la
vulgarisation, avec tout ce qu’elles supposent de raccourcis, contre celui de
l’exhaustivité et de l’érudition. C’est ensuite épouser le parti d’un classicisme
ou d’un conservatisme au moins apparent contre l’école universitaire qui
dénonce, suivant la célèbre formule de Pierre Bourdieu, l’« illusion
biographique ».

2011-ben emlékeztünk a szatmári békekötés 300. évfordulójára, amellyel lezárult a magyarság történetének egyik legjelentősebb és leghosszabb ideig tartó szabadságküzdelme, a Rákóczi-szabadságharc. A tanulmány célja az volt, hogy a szerző az évforduló alkalmával az újabb kutatási eredmények segítségével bemutassa a történeti Zemplén vármegye egy táj- és egyben közigazgatási egységén, a Bodrogközön belül az 1670-től 1711-ig tartó Habsburg-ellenes küzdelmek, azaz a Wesselényi-féle összeesküvésből kinövő 1670. évi felső-magyarországi felkelés, az ennek folytatásaként 1671–1685 között zajló kuruc háborúk, az 1697. évi hegyaljai felkelés, valamint a Rákóczi-szabadságharc katonai eseményeit. A tanulmány természetesen nem korlátozódik kizárólag a Bodrogközben történtek ismertetésére, hiszen a történeti folyamatok megértése miatt szükségesnek látta a tájegység tágabb környezete történéseit is felvázolni jelen tanulmány keretei között.
Ezt az is indokolta, hogy az tanulmány megjelenését megelőző,  a neves felső-bodrogközi honismereti kutatóval, Bogoly Jánossal, valamint dr. Tamás Edit sárospataki múzeumigazgatóval közösen két olyan, a tájegység északi, Szlovákiához tartozó feléről készült művet jelentettek meg, amelynek során arra törekedtek, hogy ne csak összefoglalják, de bővítsék is a területről való eddigi ismereteket.

Jahrhundert Es gebe "schlechterdings gar nichts Positives", so schreibt Gustav Hugo 1792, "was nicht in dem NaturRechte seine Stelle findet, und ein Wolfianer und Nettelbladtianer müßte nicht im mindesten in Verlegenheit sein, nicht nur die neue Französische Constitution, sondern auch die Staatsverfassung des heiligen Römischen Reichs, auf deren Entstehung doch gewiß das Raisonnement a priori wenig Einfluß gehabt hat, sobald es verlangt würde, im NaturRechte aus lauter Definitionen zu demonstrieren" 1. Hugos Diagnose trifft zweifellos zu-und zwar nicht nur auf die Wölfische Schule. Wenn in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts die ständischen Verfassungsstrukturen des Reichs und seiner Glieder tatsächlich zunehmend in naturrechtlichen Begriffen beschrieben wurden, so hatte daran nicht zuletzt die Göttinger Schule maßgeblichen Anteil, deren Einfluß auf die Reichsjurisprudenz in dieser Zeit wohl kaum überschätzt werden kann und der auch Hugo selbst entstammte. Das eigentümliche Verhältnis zwischen Naturrechtslehre und hergebrachten Herrschaftsverhältnissen im Reich soll im folgenden etwas näher betrachtet werden. Wenn das Vernunftrecht eine "das positive Recht übersteigende, kritisierende und delegitimierende Argumentationsstrategie" war, wie etwa Michael Stolleis zuletzt mit gutem Grund formuliert hat 2 , wie ist dann zu erklären, daß es sich trotzdem offenbar den gewachsenen Strukturen der Reichsverfassung mit all ihren monströsen Verästelungen so mühelos akkomodieren ließ? Die Frage, die dabei im Hintergrund steht, ist: Hatte die Vernunftrechtslehre als solche eine vorgängige Affinität zu bestimmten materiellen Rechtspositionen? Oder war sie ein völlig neutrales, formales Instrument der Rechtsbegründung, mit dem sich beliebige Inhalte legitimieren ließen 3 ?

The Ottoman Empire, like every long-lived state, experienced changes in institutional and administrative context in various periods. Perhaps the most striking of these changes took place at the beginning of the 17th century. The sultan, who monopolized the power in the Classical Period, became only a part of the power in the 17th century. In this period, Grand viziers, who were previously in the position of proxy of the power, have to fight in order to be a partner in power. The courtiers, who were closer to the sultan than ever before, became the powerful actors of the new order as the surprise partners of the power.
Our study focuses on the understanding of power of Kemankeş Kara Mustafa Pasha and Hezarpare Ahmed Pasha, the grand viziers of the Sultan Ibrahim period, and the struggles they gave or did not give for their power. Sultan İbrahim was suffering from his mental health. He almost divided his power among the people of the palace. How the vizier, who is the absolute deputy, behaves in such an environment is of vital importance for the state. In fact, there are only two options in front of him; struggling for full power or submitting to other power centers in order to stay in power.

Nyilvánvaló, hogy jól kiválasztott, megbízható, feladataikat komolyan vevő tisztek nélkül nehezen lehetett elképzelni a nagybirtok uradalmainak irányítását, a birtokos érdekeinek képviseletét. Szükség volt rájuk a rendi tisztségeket betöltött férfi családtagok mellett, de még inkább nélkülözhetetlenné tették magukat az özvegyasszonyok mellett. 1 A Raisz család tagjait a felvidéki Csáky ágból többen is foglalkoztatták, Csáky Jánosnak és özvegyének, Zichy Jozefának a szolgálatában is ott találjuk őket. 2 A családnak egy Raisz János nevű őse feleségével, Ugróczi Borbálával együtt II. Mátyás magyar királytól 1609. október 12-én kapott nemesi címet, szülőhelyéről a "kassai" előnevet is megszerezve. Nagy Iván úgy tudta, hogy a szepesi kamaránál szolgáló Raisz "a török és Bocskai elleni hadjáratokban" hadi biztosi szolgálataival érdemelte ki a nemesi címet. 3 A címszerző előd tevékenysége a további években is a kamarához volt köthető, mivel 1628-ban is a levéltár őreként készített előterjesztést, 70 éves korában nyugdíjazták, s 1649-ben írtak haláláról. 4

Recently published a complete edition of comprehensive notes of Martin Gruneweg (1562-ca. 1618), 2 a Gdańsk Lutheran and merchant who, after having converted to Catholicism, joined the Dominican order thus becoming of service in various Polish monasteries. The Political Value of Ecclesiastical Commissions in Lombardy during the Pontificate of Boniface VIII: Some Case Studies This study analyses the use of painting to support a political message and a political position in Lombardy at the turn of the 14 th century. The analysis shows the change in pictorial language that occurred during the pontificate of Boniface VIII, whose initiatives had deep consequences in the conflict between the political factions. This change was shown in a series of commissions by ecclesiastical figures. First, the depictions proposed by the «Ghibelline» bishops Ottone Visconti and Berardo Maggi, showing a message of community and civic peace and a Lombard-style painting, are analyzed. Then, the works commissioned by some Lombard cardinals close to Boniface VIII, based on a factional peace and on a painting style similar to Giotto's, are examined.

The article is devoted to a analysis of the works of O.Yu. Kuts on the history of the Don Cossacks of the 17th Century. The historian’s monographs and publications, which are distinguished by their extensiveness, explore issues of the formation of the Cossack community, the features of its social organization and relations with the Russian State. Much attention is paid to the military-administrative structure of the Don Host and regional trade. Research by O.Yu. Kuts shows that the ranks of the Don Cossacks were replenished by the free population of the southern Counties of Russia, who belonged to different social groups (from serfs to boyar children), with the participation of the Turkic element. Contrary to popular opinion in historiography, the flight of serfs to the Don was episodic. According to the observations of the historian, the military and industrial activity of the Cossacks in the Azov Region and on the Black Sea served as an important deterrent to the raiding activity of the Crimean Khanate. The researcher came to the conclusion that the possession of Azov in 1637–1641 played a fatal role in the history of the Don Host, contributed to its weakening and rapprochement with the Russian State.

This paper provides a historical overview of the emergence and establishment of a new defensive system during the first half of 20th century within the area of the City of Šibenik. Numerous field surveys, archival research and various new documentation made in recent years resulted in comprehensive analysis which details the construction phases of Šibenik bunkers, their typology based on the appearance and function, as well as their current condition. The construction of bunkers represents the first serious investment in city's fortifications since The War of Crete (1645-1669), when the bastion-type fortresses of St. John and Barone were made. The first ideas about investment in new and modernization of the existing Šibenik fortifications came in mid-19th century, when Šibenik, along with Pula and Kotor, was considered one of the three main military ports of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. However, the actual realization and the construction of bunkers, the new fortification elements which defended the city, occurred in the Interwar period and during the Second World War. Numerous bunkers around Šibenik were built during the first Italian occupation (1918-1921), the Kingdom of SHS/Yugoslavia (1921-1941), during the second Italian occupation (1941-1943) and during the German occupation (1943-1944). After the end of the Second World War, the army of Socialist Yugoslavia built a series of military barracks, often using existing bunker infrastructure, making Šibenik one of the most heavily fortified cities in the region. Some of the bunkers were also used during Croatian War for Independence (1991-1995), especially during the attack on Šibenik in September 1991.

This paper examines the traditional understanding of a labyrinth as something impassable, impenetrable, charac-terised by fear of entrance. On the basis of a work by John Amos Comenius (17 th century) The Labyrinth of the World and the Paradise of the Heart I would instead like to view it as a labyrinth which in contrast invites us to learn about it, to explore it, to wander. If the main modern way of getting to know the world is through tourism which does not make it possible to essentially experience and understand the place visited or perhaps only hastily, an alternative perception of the way can be offered involving the sense of the place and this in the conception of wandering, without, however, any religious background. Although the evolution of metallurgy at the end of Middle Ages is well known to scholars, some gaps remain to be filled precisely in domains related to precious metals. The extraction and transformation processes used for gold and silver ores in XVIth century Europe are known from a series of treatises but also with the help of the numerous articles written on this topic since the XIXth century. This short report present some inventories after death of precious metal refiners which provide more detail about the working environment of these craftsmen.

The paper presents analysis of road traffic in the central area of the city of Sibiu, with intense traffic and consisting of three major intersections. The main objective of the work is optimization of traffic by proposing some solutions to improve concerning some changes in intersections geometry, implementation of new cycles and traffic light phases, as well as conception of an intelligent traffic light to help the traffic. The model carried out has to detect the presence or absence of vehicles and to react accordingly to solve congestion.
