Résumé : Le sens et la légitimité de l'idée de Dieu dans les écrits kantiens, et notamment ceux datant de la période dite critique, peuvent susciter des questions quant à la nécessité même de maintenir cette idée dans un système de pensée qui prétend s'affranchir de la métaphysique dogmatique, au sein de laquelle l'idée de Dieu semble irrémédiablement appartenir. Cet article justifie l'importance philosophique de l'idée de Dieu dans la pensée morale kantienne en montrant que cette idée est nécessaire pour pouvoir penser la dimension paradoxale qui caractérise l'être humain comme être capable de moralité, dimension qui consiste en une tension entre l'autonomie de la raison morale et la finitude morale de l'être humain.

Kant begins the 1781 Preface of the Critique of Pure Reason with a history of metaphysics told as a sequence of failed political regimes. This history has been largely passed over both in the literature on Kant's metaphysics and in that on his political philosophy. This article provides an interpretation of Kant's history of metaphysical regimes as a way of exploring the political themes and aims of the First Critique. Kant's opening narrative articulates the role his critique of metaphysics plays in establishing the possibility of a lawful order of reason that defends morality against threats arising from reason's theoretical dissatisfaction. The political history of metaphysics presented in the A Preface reveals Kant's understanding of the public role philosophy must undertake in the context of the modern crisis of reason.

nómico de Centroamérica en los últimos seis años, las tensiones sociales no muestran señales de disminuir. Al contrario, están aumentando. El crecimiento económico per se puede ser algo muy conveniente, pero el crecimiento que no se acompaña de un aumento en el bienestar general es un factor poderoso para crear situaciones revolucionarias. Después de todo, la revolución mexicana de 1010, y la cubana de 1958, no ocurrieron en sociedades económicamente estancadas, sino en ottas en que el crecimiento para la obtención de beneficios de los empresarios estaba a la orden del día. Todavía no podemos saber si se olvidará en Centroamérica la lección de estos dos sucesos históricos.

This paper examines the philosophical debate between Salomon Maimon and Immanuel Kant, with a focus on Maimon’s critique of Kant’s dualism and the epistemological challenges arising from the latter’s "Critique of Pure Reason". Kant acknowledged Maimon’s profound insight into his philosophy, particularly on the foundational questions of cognition: “quid facti?” (what are the facts?) and “quid juris?” (what justifies these facts?). Kant’s attempt to reconcile the sensory and conceptual realms through the schema of time is met with skepticism by Maimon, who proposes a unified foundation for understanding and intuition. Drawing inspiration from calculus and Leibniz’s infinitesimals, Maimon develops a differential approach to cognition, suggesting that the human mind synthesizes reality through an interaction of infinitesimally small cognitive elements.

Kant's political philosophy has experienced a recent revival, largely due to influential interpretations that frame his concept of right as a republican account of "nondomination." One of the major challenges in reconstructing Kant's concept of law within neo-republican terms is his notion of citizenship. While neo-republicans have made substantial efforts to distance themselves from the traditional view that restricted voting rights to mainstream white men, Kant's distinction between "active" and "passive" citizens still echoes this conventional line of thought. Without dismissing the prevalence of the sexist and classist prejudices inherent in Kant's dichotomy, this paper argues that Kant introduces this distinction with the republican aim of securing a state governed by non-arbitrary laws. I contend that this aim explains Kant's concern with the civic character of citizens and their ability to contest structures of domination-a line of argument that aligns him more closely with contemporary neo-republicanism.

En la primera mitad del siglo XVIII, Alemania fue escenario de un intenso debate sobre la ópera, especialmente tras la difusión del estilo italiano. Este conflicto se enmarca  dentro  de  los  debates  característicos  del  Siglo  de  las  Luces,  como  el contraste entre lo antiguo y lo moderno y las evaluaciones de autores como John Milton y William Shakespeare. Johann Christoph Gottsched, una figura central en este  debate,  criticó  vehementemente  la  ópera  en  su Versuch  einer  critischen Dichtkunst,  considerándola  irracional  y  moralmente  depravada.  Gottsched  se apoyó en la crítica de Saint-Évremond y en los fundamentos de Lodovico Antonio Muratori, cuyas ideas normativas rechazaban la ópera por su falta de verosimilitud y su influencia corruptora. Sin embargo, su crítica no quedó sin respuesta; Johann Mattheson  defendió  la  ópera  argumentando  que  la  competencia  crítica  de Gottsched era insuficiente. In the first half of the eighteenth century, Germany witnessed an intense debate over opera, particularly after the  spread  of the Italian style. This conflictowas conflicthe  characteristic  debates  of  the  Enlightenment,  such  as  the  contrast between the ancient and the modern and evaluations of authors like John Milton and  William  Shakespeare.  Johann  Christoph  Gottsched,  a  central  figure  in  this debate,  vehemently  criticized  opera  in  his Versuch  einer  critischen  Dichtkunst, considering it irrational and morally depraved. Gottsched relied on the criticismofSaint-Évremond  and  the  principles  of  Lodovico  Antonio  Muratori,  whose normative  ideas  rejected  opera  for  its  lack  of  verisimilitude  and  its  corrupting influence.  However,  his  criticism  did  not  go  unanswered;  Johann  Mattheson defended opera by arguing that Gottsched’s critical competence was insufficient. This debate not only reflected the Italian-German cultural transfer but also the tensions between reason and imagination in art. Muratori’s influence, although mediated  by  Gottsched,  persisted  in  German  aesthetic  thought,  affecting  later theorists  like  Gotthold  Ephraim  Lessing  and  Franz  Grillparzer.  The conflictreveals the complexity of the conflict and the persistent struggle between reason and emotion in the evaluation of opera.

This chapter focuses on an important shift that challenged the mainstream of Enlightenment epistemology re-evaluating the function of hypotheses in the construction of scientific systems. The main figure is Condillac,  who dealt with this topic in the Traité des systèmes (1749) and later on in the Cours d’études (1775), but it is also showed that he relied most probably on the reassessment of hypotheses made by Émilie Du Châtelet in the Institutions de physique (1740, 1742). What was at stake was not simply an issue of methodology, but also the status to be given to the controversial Newton’s force of attraction.

Exegetical scepticism is a strand of scepticism about meaning running through the German Enlightenment. This paper provides the first modern account of its tenets, critics, and proponents, and argues that it shares essential features with modern varieties of meaning-scepticism that have been a preoccupation among philosophers of language since the middle of the twentieth century. I argue that exegetical scepticism is a type of epistemological scepticism first introduced as a philosophical position in a theological debate between August Pfeiffer (1640–1698) and Philipp Jacob Spener (1635–1705). Under contention, so I argue, was the idea that interpretation is never certain because it is necessarily underdetermined by the evidence. Following the effects of this controversy, I show that exegetical scepticism caused a great deal of unrest in German letters in the eighteenth century and can be seen to contribute to the great proliferation of hermeneutical theories in the Aufklärung, indeed to the very birth of hermeneutics as a standalone discipline. Bringing this type of scepticism to contemporary attention supports a reassessment of issues at the heart of meaning-scepticism and hermeneutics itself, and a reconsideration of the histories of Enlightenment scepticism and hermeneutics.

This special volume 6 of "Symphilosophie: International Journal of Philosophical Romanticism" celebrates and engages with Immanuel Kant’s legacy and indelible influence on the romantics in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. In recognition of Kant’s enduring importance, we have invited authors to mark his 300th birth year with articles, translations, and reviews that take up Kantian themes present in romantic thinkers. Despite the contrast in styles between Kant and the romantics, the importance of Kant’s critical system for the core ideas of romanticism is undeniable and inex- tricable. This year’s issue 6 of Symphilosophie therefore examines the crucial residual influence of Kant on romantic philosophy.

This essay is concerned with a passage from §24 of Hegel’s Encyclopaedia, in which Hegel characterises the concepts or ‘thoughts’ developed in the discipline of metaphysics by saying that they ‘used to count as expressing the essentialities of things’. I begin by drawing attention to Hegel’s use of the past tense in this passage and suggest that it looks problematic for conceptual realist interpreters of Hegel’s idealism, who want, roughly, to attribute to him the view that thoughts or ‘thought-determinations’ express the essentialities of things. I then develop this challenge with help from Robert Pippin, who takes Hegel, in this passage, to be rejecting the metaphysical projects of pre-Kantian European rationalism. If Pippin is right, then in this passage Hegel is in fact distancing himself from the view that conceptual realist accounts attribute to him. In the final part of the article, I re-examine some of Hegel’s remarks concerning the history of European metaphysics and offer an alternative, better explanation of Hegel’s use of the past tense in the passage in question, one which neutralises the objection to conceptual realist accounts of Hegel’s idealism.

Il presente contributo si prefigge di indagare la rilevanza e la centralità dell’aggettivo 'absconditus', che nelle opere e negli scritti di paternità luterana – in particolare, nel Commento al Salmo 117 – viene attribuito a Dio e alla natura che gli è propria, colto in continuità con un altro
termine chiave del vocabolario del monaco di Eisleben, 'revelatus', e concepito a sostegno della prospettiva secondo la quale la manifestazione del Divino avvenga 'sub specie contraria'. Tale trittico concettuale, che Lutero eredita dalla tradizione scritturale, (vedasi, a tal proposito, l’agone tra uomo e Dio di cui si racconta in Isaia 45,15) e che trasla in una prospettiva teologica, quella della 'Theologia crucis', assurgerà ad un ruolo determinante per la piena comprensione di una precisa visione del
rapporto tra la dimensione filosofico-speculativa e quella teologico-affettiva di cui è portavoce, fin dalla sua prima formazione accademica, Hegel. È nota l’entità considerevole del debito che l’autore della 'Fenomenologia dello spirito' registra nei confronti del padre della Riforma protestante, attraverso la cui teologia il pensatore di Stoccarda giunge all’elaborazione puntuale di un sistema di pensiero che sulle tesi luterane si impernia e che ruota, dalla giovinezza alla maturità, attorno ad una processualità dialettica che è essa stessa figlia di una rilettura in chiave filosofica di Martin Lutero e di alcune sue unità terminologiche e teoriche. Die Geschichte der französischen Philosophie im 19. Jahrhundert beginnt als akademische Fachrichtung mit Victor Cousin, der weit mehr als seine blassen Vorgänger Laromiguière oder Royer-Collard die akademische Disziplin geprägt hat. Contexte 1: L'imagination dans l'immanence de l'ordre philosophique La philosophie m'apparaît comme un ordre de pensée, et l'imagination comme un mode d'habiter cet ordre et de le continuer de façon inattendue. J'aime toutes les philosophies, je ne suis pas disciple de l'une d'elles en particulier. Les noms de philosophes cités dans la suite sont comme des points d'intensité dans un continuum. Il pourrait y en avoir bien d'autres. Qu'ils ne soient pas des points de fixation, mais des supports pour l'invention, comme des noms de théorèmes en mathématiques.

"Le Cours de philosophie en six heures un quart donné du 27 avril au 25 mai 1969, à sa propre femme Maria Rita Labrosse et à Dominique de Roux, aida l'écrivain polonais à supporter les derniers mois de sa vie. Cet article se propose d’examiner la reponse de Wizenmann a l’article de Kant qu’est-ce que s’orienter dans la pensee ? et de montrer qu’il ne s’agit pas dans le debat Kant-Wizenmann de conflit entre foi et raison, mais de l’origine de la foi. Il s’agit, si l’on devait resumer en une question, de savoir a partir d’ou et comment l’homme s’eveille a la foi. Kant defend l’argument selon lequel le principe d’orientation dans la pensee est subjectif et, donc, que c’est par un « besoin de la raison » que nous sommes conduits a la foi. Wizenmann remet en cause cet ideal rationnel en reaffirmant la dependance du principe subjectif sur un principe objectif. Autrement dit, meme si on a besoin de la raison pour s’orienter en ce qui concerne Dieu, c’est moins la raison que la revelation qui nous conduit a la foi.

Für den Protestanten Jacobi waren die Reformation und das Auftreten Martin Luthers ebenso unerwartete wie geschichtsprägende Ereignisse. "Luther certainement se serait moqué de lui-même, si, losqu'il afficha ses theses à Wittemberg, une idée qu'il allait changer la face de l'Europe lui était venue passer par la tête"(JWA 5,1: 177). So wie der Anfang des Lutherischen Werkes schon mit den Waldensern, mit Wiklef und Huß begann; so die Kantische Philosophie schon mit Cartesius, Lockeund Berkeley" (JWA 5,1: 217). Außer dass Jacobi an dieser Stelle die epochemachende Bedeutung der Reformation hervorhebt, betont er auch den geschichtlichen Charakter seiner Wahrheitsauffassung. Jacobi zufolge war die Reformation aber nicht nur epochemachend, sondern bedeutete auch einen wesentlichen Fortschritt in der Geschichte der Menschheit: "Alle die vorzüglichsten Männer, welche sich in den Jahrhunderten seit der Reformation in unserm Vaterlande hervorgethan haben, waren Protestanten, und bis auf den heutigen Tag ist nicht allein was Ruhm und Ehre, sondern auch was Vortheil bringt, beynah ausschließlich in ihren Händen; hinunter bis zur niedrigsten Classe sind sie die klügsten, geschicktesten, emsigsten und rechtschaffensten." In einer Fußnote mäßigt Jacobi aber diese chauvinistische Meinung, indem er eingesteht, "daß auch, unter den Schriftstellern zum Exempel, ein Boßuet, ein Fenelon, und daß eine Menge anderer, gewiß von Herzen Catolischer, große Männer gewesen sind. Auch hier kömmt die Religion nicht als Religion, sondern blos als ein Umstand der Erziehung in Betrachtung; und auch dieses nur, in blos zufälliger Rücksicht von Zeit und

Jacobi gehörte einer kleinen lutherischen Gemeinde im überwiegend katholischen Düsseldorf an und trat mit 14 Jahren dem pietistischen Zirkel der "Feinen" bei (ABW: VIIff.), was verständlich macht, dass er von Kindesbeinen an von seiner konfessionellen Angehörigkeit und dem Glauben an ihre Überlegenheit gegenüber der katholischen Konfession geprägt war. Folglich ist er davon überzeugt, dass "wir [etwa] den protestantischen Missethäter getroster zum Gerichtsplatz wandeln sehen, als den katholischen. Gleichwohl kann der Katholische, wenn er es von ganzer Seele ist, sich des Himmels vielleicht gewisser glauben, als der Protestant. Aber dieser ist durch das bischen mehr Unterricht, das er in seiner Kindheit genossen hat, zu einem geistigern Enthusiasmus fähig, [und] sein Begleiter weiß lebhaftere und zusammengesetztere Vorstellungen in ihm hervorzubringen" (JWA 7,1: 320; vgl. JWA 7,1:193). Hiermit spielt Jacobi auf den bekannten Doppelunterschied der größeren Heilsgewissheit bei den Katholiken und der gründlicheren theologischen Bildung bei den Protestanten an. Andere theologische Kennzeichen des Protestantismus sind die Bedeutung der Bibel und der Nachdruck auf den Gedanken der unsichtbaren Kirche und der Gemeinschaft der Heiligen, womit Jacobi die äußerliche, sichtbare Kirche der Katholiken und ihren Autoritarismus, der sich in der Rolle der Priester und besonders im Papismus zeigt, kritisiert. "Wir Protestanten hätten also unrecht wenn wir auf eine äußerliche Kirche Anspruch machten, ohne einen andern Erkenntnisgrund als allein die Bibel anzunehmen" (

Für Jacobi hat Kirche meistens eine negative Bedeutung, insbesondere weil er sie öfters mit der sichtbaren, äußerlichen katholischen Kirche gleichsetzt und sie so der wahren, unsichtbaren, innerlichen protestantischen Kirche gegenüberstellt. Zweitens verwendet Jacobi das Wort Kirche im Rahmen seiner Beschreibung der Rolle der Kirche in der intellektuellen Bildung der mittelalterlichen Gesellschaft. Schließlich kommt das Wort Kirche aber auch in einem nichtreligiösen Sinn vor, indem Jacobi seine Gegner der Berliner Aufklärung als Mitglieder einer philosophischen Kirche bezeichnet, um sie so zu diffamieren.

Für Jacobi hat das Wort ‚Fleisch' keine technisch-philosophische Bedeutung. Meistens verwendet er dieses Wort in einem metaphorischen Sinne, um damit das Natürliche oder Körperliche, einschließlich des Lustvollen, im Menschen anzudeuten, öfters mittels Ausdrücke wie ‚Fleisch und Blut'. Zweitens verwendet Jacobi das Wort ‚Fleisch', um das spannungsvolle, positive oder negative Verhältnis zwischen dem Körperlichen und dem Geistigen auszudrücken, und schließlich weist er mit diesem Wort auf die enge Verwandtschaft zwischen verschiedenen Menschen hin. Manchmal ist ‚Fleisch' biblischen Metaphern entnommen.

The Ethics of Sexual Passions in the Work of Frederick II the Great The writings of Frederick the Great, in addition to historical and military works, also contain philosophical works, poetry and letters. This article deals with the ethics of sexual passions to the extent they can be found in these philosophical and poetic works. First, the philosophical discussion on the ethics of sexual passions in Freder ick's time is briefly described, after which the methodological principles of Avi Lif schitz are used to examine Frederick's philosophical texts "A Moral Dialogue for the Use of the Young Nobility", "Letter on Education and Essay on Self Love Considered as a Principle of Morality". Three of Frederick's "Epistles" in verse and his play "The Tem ple of Love", in which sexual passions are analyzed in more depth, are also explored. Frederick's ethics of sexual passions are based on self-love (amour-propre), which pro tects the desirer from the seduction of a married woman, the lying of a single woman and the danger of a disease that can be caught from a prostitute. Marriage is deter mined to be the only space for satisfying sexual desires. However, the poetic work contains more: in it, Frederick notices the characteristics of passions that do not have to lead to marriage. It is above all about the different view of desires before and after gratification from the perspective of the desirer and other people.

Die Texte dieser kooperativen Arbeit bewegen sich im Spielraum zwischen Interpretation und theoretischem Entwurf. Das hier vorgestellte Konzept betrachtet, im Anschluss an Hegel, "die Revolution in der Form der Künste". Es richtet den Blick auf Kunst als Realismus und Aufklärung seit der frühen Antike. Ein Schwerpunkt ist das Verhältnis der deutschen Klassik zur europäischen Romantik, das bislang kaum untersucht und auch im Peter Hacks folgenden Klassik-Verständnis seinen Ort bisher nicht gefunden hat.

The concept of self-legislation or autonomy is one of the outstanding innovations of Kant’s ethics. Nevertheless, it should not be ignored that it also builds on previous positions. Even if Kant in the Groundwork classifies all other moral principles as heteronomous, it is important to recognize that Kant incorporates elements of Wolff’s theory of self-legislation and Crusius’ theory of obligation into his theory of autonomy. In this essay, I present the relevant themes in Wolff and Crusius and discuss how they were taken up by Kant in the mid-1780s.

O problema de determinar os fatores que motivaram a virada crítica de Kant em 1769-70 é histórico. Acerca dele, pelo menos dez diferentes teses já foram defendidas. Neste trabalho, pretendemos fazer um exame detalhado de uma dessas teses, tomando-a como nossa hipótese de trabalho, especificamente a proposta de Klaus Reich, de que o problema do comércio psicofísico foi um dos motivadores. Para isso, apresentamos no primeiro capítulo o horizonte teórico do qual Kant partia. Analisamos três teorias, concebidas no século XVIII alemão como respostas canônicas ao problema do comércio psicofísico: ocasionalismo, harmonia preestabelecida e influxo físico, com foco nas últimas duas. Mostramos como elas se desenvolveram no contexto alemão começando com Leibniz e Wolff, e terminando com Knutzen, Baumgarten e Crusius. A partir desse panorama, analisamos, no segundo capítulo, as respostas que foram oferecidas ao problema por Kant, desde seu primeiro trabalho até a Dissertação. Desse modo, expomos nesse capítulo uma Entwicklungsgeschichte, metodologia amplamente empregada pela Kant-Forschung. Mostramos não só que Kant sempre dedicou atenção a esse problema, mas que há um desenvolvimento interno das respostas que lhe são oferecidas, cuja culminação é a virada crítica. Nesse contexto, argumentamos que o problema do comércio psicofísico desempenhou um papel tanto teórico quanto prático na virada crítica de 1769-70. No terceiro capítulo, expomos outras dez teses desenvolvidas na literatura secundária acerca da virada crítica e localizamos nossa hipótese em meio a elas. Mostramos também quais são as premissas de boa parte dessa literatura e como podemos questioná-las, abrindo espaço para uma concepção mais realista e frutífera do desenvolvimento de Kant.

La propuesta de este artículo es abordar la recepción de Platón en el contexto de la célebre Polémica del panteísmo (Pantheismusstreit) aplicando las herramientas conceptuales y metodológicas obtenidas a partir de una exploración colectiva iniciada hace ya algunos años y todavía en curso, que llamamos caminos cruzados. En el transcurso de esta polémica, desencadenada a comienzos de la década de 1780 por F. H. Jacobi al revelar que el gran hombre de la ilustración alemana, G. E. Lessing, le había confesado poco antes de morir su secreto spinozismo, reaparece una tesis ya defendida a finales del siglo anterior por P. Bayle y G. Wachter, según la cual Spinoza y Platón se nutrieron de la misma tradición y adhieren, en el fondo, a una misma doctrina. Apelando a la perspectiva de los caminos cruzados, planteo la pregunta (imposible desde las perspectivas historiográficas habituales) acerca del spinozismo de Platón para reconstruir el vínculo que Jacobi ve entre ellos y revelar así aspectos que, en el estudio de la recepción, suelen permanecer ocultos, como el hecho de que una misma tesis puede tener un significado completamente distinto en diferentes autores y el rol fundamental que tiene la construcción de un enemigo para darle forma y justificación a la posición propia.
