19th Century American Women Writers

At the turn of the twentieth century, wage-earning women in progressive America had to succumb to a vicious, precarious system in which they were disadvantaged when compared to their male counterparts. In an attempt to illuminate on the working girl problem in big cities, Dorothy Richardson, a reporter from the New York Herald, took up undercover investigative journalism, publishing her experiences in The Long Day: The Story of a New York Working Girl (1905). In her novel, Richardson stipulates trades-training and reminds her readers of the necessity of protective legislation. Introducing the life of her heroine as desirable, she emphasizes the value of a strenuous life, showing her readers how to climb up the social ladder towards the American dream.

El jardín de tradición simbolista que aparece en tantos poemas de libros como Rimas (1902), Arias tristes (1903) o Jardines lejanos (1905) se ha identificado con los respectivos jardines del Sanatorio Castel d'Andorte, en Le Buscat (Burdeos), y del Sanatorio del Rosario, de Madrid, donde Juan Ramón Jiménez vivió en reclusión y aislamiento por aquellos años. Durante su estancia en el sanatorio francés escribió el primero de los libros mencionados y, en el madrileño, el segundo y parte del tercero, en el que además el símbolo del jardín estructura su contenido, dividido en tres partes tituladas respectivamente "Jardines galantes", "Jardines místicos" y "Jardines dolientes". Pero lo cierto es que los jardines están presentes en todos los libros de esta época temprana de su producción, pues hablamos de un símbolo muy recurrente en la obra de prácticamente todos los modernistas españoles. En los innumerables jardines que aparecen en la poesía de aquellos años encontramos una serie de elementos omnipresentes -la luna, la fuente, los senderos laberínticos, las estatuas, la verja, así como una extensa variedad de flores y plantas (lilas, acacias, jazmines, rosas, nardos, evónimos, arrayanes, lirios, rosas, almendros, araucarias, magnolios, tilos, chopos, plátanos, helechos…)tomados mayoritariamente del Simbolismo francés. Mucho se ha insistido a este respecto en la influencia de Verlaine, cuya poesía empieza a leerse en España a finales del siglo XIX, sobre el joven Juan Ramón, quien incluso había traducido sus poemas para la revista Helios (n. 3, 1903). Evidentemente, y al margen de la relevancia de determinados jardines en la biografía del mismo autor, se trataba de jardines literarios, más cerca de la construcción mental que del lugar real, que funcionan como espejo en el que se mira el alma del poeta, existiendo entre ambos una relación ambivalente, de influjo recíproco.

Adela Zamudio (1854-1928) se erige como una de las figuras más significativas en la literatura boliviana y como un pilar fundamental del romanticismo en América Latina. Su producción literaria, que abarca poesía, ensayo y narrativa, destaca por su profunda emotividad, un tono nostálgico y una crítica incisiva hacia las injusticias sociales, especialmente aquellas que afectan a las mujeres. En un entorno marcado por la opresión y el conservadurismo, Zamudio sobresale por su valentía literaria y su compromiso con los derechos femeninos, dejando una huella indeleble en la evolución de la literatura escrita por mujeres tanto en su país como en la región.

Representations of Health, Illness, and Repair in the Works of Louisa May Alcott analyzes a remarkably wide range of wholesome and unwholesome social conditions and practices as well as debilitating afflictions. Michaela Keck argues that Alcott's representations of such variegated forms of well-being and sickness display complex cultural processes of meaning-making, whether through storytelling, myth, or the fine arts. Alcott's narratives acknowledge the importance of physical and psychological health as well as the disruptive forces of disease in both their life-shattering and everyday aspects while also insisting on strategies of healing for both the individual and the collective. This book demonstrates that her stories do not shy away from addressing the embodied struggles involved in being ill and administering to the ill at the same time as they offer a wealth of ameliorative strategies for the afflicted, their caregivers, and even the readers.

Por el contrario, con Rubén Darío como director literario, esta revista logra crear un espacio propicio para difundir literatura contemporánea entre su lectorado femenino. De esta manera, Elegancias funciona como plataforma para autoras hispanohablantes que buscan disputar espacios en el campo cultural de principios del siglo XX, aún hostil para las plumas femeninas. En este sentido,  esta ponencia buscará indagar las formas en que algunas autoras, como Delmira Agustini, Aurora Cáceres, Delfina Bunge de Gálvez y Gabriela Mistral, son seleccionadas por la línea editorial de esta publicación para construir incipientes figuraciones de autoras mujeres a través de semblanzas y reseñas.

Taste: Je ne sais quoi "Taste" is among those philosophical categories that are the most difficult to fully characterize. Reflection on taste, on the experience and concept of taste, flourished in modern times. It went through its history from dynamic development in the seventeenth century and theoretical career in the eighteenth century. One gets the impression that "taste" became the central category of philosophy of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In the nineteenth century, interest in taste diminished significantly. Considerations of taste were closely integrated into the general philosophical attitudes of thinkers of the period. They generated disputes that form the canvas of later considerations that are already less emotional. The social transformations that we have been observing in the last few decades are forcing a renewed interest in the category of taste. At the same time, it is a colloquial category, commonly used. It is present if not in every European dictionary, then in most. In some languages it also has numerous synonyms that provide clues as to how various psycho-social states are expressed through these terms. su época; sin embargo, con los años se ha ido borrando la relevancia de su paso por las
letras mexicanas. El objetivo de este artículo es dar un panorama amplio de su obra, con
el fin de destacar sus aportaciones a la literatura mexicana y su importancia dentro de la genealogía literaria femenina mexicana. Por esta razón, desde los conceptos de diversas aproximaciones con perspectiva de género, como los de Lagarde y Butler, se mostrará la forma en la que Manero se apoyó en el espiritismo, para mostrar la importancia del
espíritu, más allá del género y los preceptos que impiden a la mujer su desarrollo.

En 1912 Gardel grabó la canción "Brisas de la Tarde" para el sello "Columbia" i y en 1917-a dúo con Razzano, para "Nacional Odeón" ii-, abrevió el título a "Brisas" y realizó leves modificaciones con respecto a la versión anterior. This paper deals with the issues of womanhood and democratic household in Little Women, a novel by Louisa May Alcott. The theoretical framework for the research is Barbara Welter's classic essay on the concept of "true" womanhood in Victorian America. By analyzing the four cardinal traits of proper womanhood as reflected in the novel, the conclusion emerges that Meg, Beth, Jo, and Amy's growing into womanhood simultaneously confirms the limitation of women's potential in Victorian America and testifies to the struggle for actualization. The development of the four girls is under the indisputable influence of both the gender discourses that prevail in society and the progressive views of their mother. However, since each girl interprets these visions differently and adapts them to their various personalities, their paths to womanhood are unique. Finally, the paper aims to demonstrate that the March sisters attempt to strike a balance between actualization and adaption to the needs of the family, two equally important, but opposing aspirations. In conclusion, the actualization of the March girls, initially jeopardized by the limitations of patriarchal culture, is further complicated by their desire to remain true to their family's (mother's) teaching, which is especially emphasized during Amy and Jo's attempts to realize their artistic ambitions.

Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera (1859-1895) no escribió ninguna de las obras más importantes de la literatura mexicana del siglo XIX, pero fue el escritor mexicano más importante del siglo XIX. Su verdadera grandeza no está en tal o cual obra, sino en la literatura que nace de su voz fragmentada en miles de piezas y de páginas. Esto lo convierte en uno de los autores más complejos. Que la ingente literatura dedicada a su literatura haya despejado apenas unos cuantos de sus enigmas, lo prueba. Uno de los más estudiados escritores mexicanos es también uno de los menos conocidos, si se prescinde del cúmulo de imágenes fragmentarias, de apreciaciones parciales y visiones de detalle que hemos formado para explicarlo y que no lo explican en su compleja unidad. A la espera de un estudio integral de la obra del escritor, el estudioso se ve en la necesidad de limitarse a la revisión de algunas de las facetas centrales de la creación de Gutiérrez Nájera, como su poesía, su novela, sus cuentos y sus escritos críticos. During the medical superintendence of Dr Thomas Duncan Greenlees at the Grahamstown Lunatic Asylum, from 1890 to 1907, he was watchful of his patients' appearances, facial expressions and conduct. Of particular interest, Greenlees would closely monitor the patients' faces to identify if there were any involuntary expressions that were indicators of underlying emotional unease or mental distress. Greenlees thus regarded involuntary facial expressions as a litmus test of a patient's recovery, but it was the patient's conscious facial expressions, as well as their presentation of upstanding behaviour and conduct, that signalled to the staff that they were self-composed, and hence on the path towards convalescence. In this article, I explore how three white male patients of the Asylum communicated their convalescence and/or restored mental health to the staff by posing for their casebook photographs and by presenting a gentlemanly persona. To this end, I interpret the photographs of the three men alongside entries from their casebooks as an interface to explore dimensions of time that lie outside the split second that was captured by the camera lens. In doing so, the glimpses of a patient's agency and appearance in a photograph can be understood and compared with their performance of a gentlemanly persona that was recorded in the casebooks.

Harriet Jacobs was a writer and a reformer. As a female writer in the nineteenth century, Jacobs was a slave with an agency. She wrote her narrative as a means of resisting the system of slavery at that time. Her book Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl: Written by Herself (1842) reflects upon the exploitation of the black people and the need to change the hierarchal attitude that governs the white-black paradigm. She was engaged in many abolitionist events and her anti-slavery approach appeared clearly in her writings. She shares Du Bios ideas about freedom and emancipation and the need for political and cultural change. Thus, Du Bois's theory provides a framework for her autobiographical novel where she portrays Linda Brent, the main character, a strong-willed lady whose path to freedom came after an

Positioning the textual Child Many of Alcott's works-including, on occasion, her blood-and-thunder novels and stories-are read by critical readers as domestic fiction: womanauthored; written at a time when a woman's place was still largely assumed to be in the home; and centered on house and home, frequently focusing on female characters and/or children. In this sense, it is avowedly noncanonical, frequently read in opposition to the male-authored and maleendorsed nineteenth-century canon. Nathaniel Hawthorne, Alcott's Concord neighbor, famously condemned domestic fiction as written by a 'd[amne]d mob of scribbling women' writing 'trash'. 1 Her contemporary, Henry James Jr., was no more complimentary about either the genre or Alcott's place within it. A case in point is his review of Alcott's adult work, Moods. Writing for The Atlantic Monthly in 1865, James dismissed the novel as an unconvincing version of 'the old story' of the domestic love triangle and Alcott's 'ignorance of human nature' as the reason for its lack of conviction; however, he disapproved of Eight Cousins, some ten years later, for the opposite reason, believing it too realistic for a children's story and Alcott's 'smart, satirical tone' as inappropriate for the age of its intended audience. 2 In each case, a claim to a known real is invoked to withhold a value judgment from a female-written text, with James arguing that Alcott's knowledge and experience of life is insufficient to write about adults but inappropriate when applied to children. This study critically analyses Kate Chopin’s “The Story of an Hour” (1894) with special reference to Saussurean structuralism. It aims at exploring several different aspects of this work such as the notions of signification, binary oppositions, and language arbitrariness. The analysis conforms to the framework of Structuralism put forth into the field of linguistics by Ferdinand De Saussure. From the perspective of Structuralism, a close reading methodology is undertaken to evaluate this short story, its diction, characters, narration, and arrangement of paragraphs. Qualitative in nature, the study investigates a work of fiction through a linguistic theory thus giving the article a sense of novelty, originality and making it a worthy contribution to the disciplines of both linguistics and literature. Moreover, the reasons behind the author’s choice of employing certain structures and figurative language are brought into light. These interpreted purposes, which are significant in comprehending Chopin’s
work within the parameters of Saussurean structuralism, go side by side in this paper. Besides Saussure, structuralism has been worked upon by many other renowned linguists as well. This study can pave way for researchers to examine “The Story of an Hour” from different structuralists’ viewpoints like LéviStrauss and Jakobson, allowing the readers to understand this short story from a new perspective and standpoint.

A través del cotejo de las tres ediciones de Señor del vértigo (1992, 1994, 2013), este trabajo pretende aproximarse a algunos de los núcleos de sentido de la poética de David Preiss en su primer libro, extendiendo estas proposiciones a algunas zonas de su obra posterior: Y demora el alba (1995), Oscuro mediodía (2000) y Bocado (2011), de modo de observar con cierta extensión diacrónica las transformaciones que, desde esa primera cantera imaginaria, el autor ha elaborado con respecto al testimonio de la Shoá, el desastre, y la constitución de la subjetividad, que desarrolla formas particulares de manifestar su conflicto con respecto al mandato paterno y divino de la memoria y la reproducción carnal, lingüística y simbólica. Este artículo analiza la importancia de la edad en la caracterización de las dos figuras que intervienen en el Espejo de ilustres y perfectas señoras de José Rojo, obra dialógica de finales del siglo xvii. Durante las diferentes conversaciones que la integran, los interlocutores se enfrentarán a varios desacuerdos; así deberán servirse de la argumentación, propia de este género, para defender sus puntos de vista. Doña Blanca, además del descrédito preestablecido hacia su sexo, sufrirá la desventaja de su temprana edad frente a la experiencia de su padre, don Enrique. A pesar de que la protagonista se desenvolverá en la diatriba con brillantez, él deshará sus razones sirviéndose del componente experiencial. De esta forma, desarmará su argumentación y logrará imponer su voluntad en los debates sobre la descendencia y las segundas bodas, realidades a las que la joven se opone firmemente al comienzo.

Abstract: Short story as one of literary works can be the reflection of human life and also historical background in which human live in certain time and period. The portrayal of the characters in the short story can describe vividly the life of people in the real life in certain period. This article tries to portray how women in America living under the pressure of patriarchy during 1920s and it is described though female character in Mary E Wilkins’s The Revolt of Mother. The struggle of female character in this short story to survive upon the oppression of patriarchy is so touching and inspiring. The author creates such a delicate but tough female character who finally can conquer her husband’s absolute privilege which made her to live with suffering for forty years. 's bold critical work, Sentimental Collaborations, offers a radically new historicist methodology. The book's unique project is to develop a new poetics through an analysis of a collection of poetry written by a small and, as Kete notes, a most emphatically "ordinary" community of nineteenth-century New Englanders. Indeed, although Kete includes extensive analysis of writers such as Sigourney, Longfellow, Stowe, and Twain, a significant portion of the text is a publication of Harriet Gould's Book. This is a text in which Harriet Gould and her extended family in Vermont wrote poems to one another as gifts that, Kete argues, constituted a middle-class culture that dealt with mourning and loss through sentiment. Billed as an appendix, it still feels like part of the main body of the work, inviting us to read it. It is a fascinating move, one that perhaps honors this poetry as the real stuff. That is, there is no patronizing "recovery" work here; Kete is not suggesting that we read Harriet Gould's Book merely for its historical or cultural value. Certainly Kete's argument offers plenty of historical and cultural analysis, but her work expands into aesthetic evaluation as well. There is a poetics lurking here. Kete is careful to point out in the first paragraph of her preface that these poems themselves came to her as a gift from her mother-in-law; while at first both women regarded the writing with studied cynicism, they eventually found they were moved by these sentimental poems. Such a moment gives way to Kete's investigation of the "utopian aspects of sentimentality," and it isolates sentimental poetry's capacity to reach out to its readers. It also rather self-consciously points to a fairly random selection of writers and how and why these "gifts" might suggest a new way to read nineteenth-century poetry. The first three chapters of Sentimental Collaborations present close readings of poems from Harriet Gould's Book, and Kete eschews the approach of the new historical apologist who assesses the text's cultural work outside aesthetic evaluations of a text's essential literary worth. Rather, Kete reads these poems as constitutive of what she calls a "sentimental poetics." Her methodology insists upon an organic link between aesthetic and cultural values; in true new historical form, Kete suggests that cultural value might be the origin of aesthetic value, but she avoids making a case for these poems as valuable merely on the grounds that they are ideologically interesting. Esta obra estudia las emociones en clave histórica partiendo de la base que el género ha sido una categoría esencial en la naturalización de las sensibilidades. Prácticas y representaciones -como llorar, amar y temer, por ejemplo-, no se pueden entender al disociarse del género de quien lloraba, amaba o temía.
Las mujeres que protagonizan este libro pertenecen a los más diversos sectores sociales. Las mujeres plebeyas, pero también de elite y de los sectores medios -ilustradas o carentes de educación formal-, se observan en sus respectivos contextos -públicos o privados, familiares o institucionales, urbanos o rurales-, como conocedoras de las normas que regulaban los estilos emocionales, exhibiendo o censurando las emociones propias y representando las ajenas. 
Dos ejes articulan esta obra. Por una parte, se estudian las rupturas y los vínculos que son quebrados o articulados en las emociones y por las emociones. En el marco de prácticas, agencias y representaciones en torno a las violencias, los escándalos, los sentimientos, deseos, desbordes, estupores y victimizaciones, se engarzan y destruyen historias, convivencias y lazos interpersonales. Por otra parte, el libro también estudia las emociones que articulan a mujeres, hombres, familias, organizaciones y espacios locales en redes que se expresan a través de dinámicas de reciprocidad, relaciones laborales, gestos políticos y prácticas de escritura.

The current study aims to present how Virginia Woolf and Charlotte Perkins Gilman concentrate upon the devastating effects of the subjugation on female psyche and accentuate the discordance between inner self and social self by sneaking into the minds of the anonymous female narrators whose freedom and identity are subjugated by the patriarchy in their short stories, The Mark on the Wall and The Yellow Wallpaper, respectively. The patriarchal order in both stories asserts control over the mind of female characters and reduces them to submissiveness and docility associated with the traditional cult of true womanhood. In this sense, dwelled on gender apartheid and fragmentation of female psyche, Woolf and Gilman call the societal assertiveness into question, deny women's invisibility in society, and find a true female self beyond the identities incarcerated in oppressive patriarchal imperatives. The study shows that Woolf and Gilman use the narrators' flow of thoughts to reflect the narrator's suffering from inner-outer split in androcentric society; to enlighten the reader about how unjust gender relations and the lack of autonomy undermine female psyche; to resist against dogmatic set of rules and values embodied by patriarchy. They use flow of thoughts as a means of liberating female characters from the yokes of patriarchal mindset and articulate their short stories as a feminist outcry against the patriarchy which attempts to subdue women and ensnare the female psyche.

La copla "Amapolita morada" constituyó el motivo para la creación del poema "Glosa de mi tierra" de Alfonso Reyes y de la canción de Las mañanitas de Manuel M. Ponce. En ambas obras, poeta y músico dejan testimonio de una  las preocupaciones del grupo al que pertenecieron, El Ateneo de la Juventud. Flor silvestre y callada, veros de queja, la amapola es un sómbolo de lo sinvestre en el poema de Reyes. Joven que despierta entre el arrullo de lentas campanadas y cantos de pájaros en una mañana pueblerina, la flor constituye una imagen de la melancolía para Manuel M. Ponce. Lo silvetsre y lo melancólico son las características que ambos mexicanos consideran esenciales del alma mexicana.
