The latent structure of eating disorder symptoms, as defined by DSM-IV, was tested in a group of 341 women with and without an eating disorder diagnosis. The study group consisted of 201 participants with a diagnosis of anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder, or eating disorder not otherwise specified; 24 comparison subjects who were obese but did not have an eating disorder diagnosis; and 116 normalweight comparison subjects. The presence and severity of DSM-IV eating disorder symptoms was assessed with the semi-structured Interview for the Diagnosis of Eating Disorders-IV. The study group was randomly divided into two subgroups for factor analytic studies, and the data were subjected to exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis. Pilot taxometric analyses were used to examine whether the obtained factors represented true dimensions or latent discrete classes. In exploratory factor analyses with data from subgroup 1, three factors were found to account for 66% of the variance in eating disorder symptoms: binge eating, fear of fatness/compensatory behaviors, and drive for extreme thinness. Confirmatory factor analysis cross-validated this factor structure with data from subgroup 2. The eating disorder groups and comparison groups were found to differ on at least one of the three factors. The results of the taxometric analyses were inconsistent with a strictly dimensional model of eating disorders and suggested that some features may be dimensional whereas others may be taxonic (discrete).

Background Factors associated with suicide attempts during the antecedent illness trajectory of bipolar disorder (BD) and schizophrenia (SZ) are poorly understood. Utilizing the Rochester Epidemiology Project, individuals born after 1985 in Olmsted County, MN, presented with first episode mania (FEM) or psychosis (FEP), subsequently diagnosed with BD or SZ were identified. Patient demographics, suicidal ideation with plan, self-harm, suicide attempts, psychiatric hospitalizations, substance use, and childhood adversities were quantified using the electronic health record. Analyses pooled BD and SZ groups with a transdiagnostic approach given the two diseases were not yet differentiated. Factors associated with suicide attempts were examined using bivariate methods and multivariable logistic regression modeling. Results A total of 205 individuals with FEM or FEP (BD = 74, SZ = 131) were included. Suicide attempts were identified in 39 (19%) patients. Those with suicide attempts during antecedent illness trajectory were more likely to be female, victims of domestic violence or bullying behavior, and have higher rates of psychiatric hospitalizations, suicidal ideation with plan and/or self-harm, as well as alcohol, drug, and nicotine use before FEM/FEP onset. Based on multivariable logistic regression, three factors remained independently associated with suicidal attempts: psychiatric hospitalization (OR = 5.84, 95% CI 2.09-16.33, p < 0.001), self-harm (OR = 3.46, 95% CI 1.29-9.30, p = 0.014), and nicotine use (OR = 3.02, 95% CI 1.17-7.76, p = 0.022). Suicidal attempts were prevalent during the antecedents of BD and SZ and were associated with several risk factors before FEM/FEP. Their clinical recognition could contribute to improve early prediction and prevention of suicide during the antecedent illness trajectory of BD and SZ.

BackgroundSocial media and other technologies are reshaping communication and health.AimsThis review addresses the relationship between social media use, behavioural health conditions and psychological well-being for youth aged &lt;25 years.MethodA scoping review of 11 literature databases from 2000 to 2020 explored research studies in youth in five areas: clinical depression and anxiety, quantitative use, social media mode, engagement and qualitative dimensions and health and well-being.ResultsOut of 2820 potential literature references, 140 met the inclusion criteria. This study tested the utility of three different models of personality, namely the social and personality model, the pathological personality traits model, and the psychological dysregulation model, in predicting overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency in a sample of detained boys (ages 12 to 18; M age = 15.31; SD = 1.16). Results indicated that the three personality approaches demonstrated different unique associations with aggression and delinquency. The psychological dysregulation approach, composed of behavioral dysregulation, emotional dysregulation, and cognitive dysregulation, emerged as the overall best predictor of overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency. After controlling for the Big Five personality traits, psychological dysregulation accounted for significant variance in overt aggression and delinquency, but not relational aggression. After controlling for callousunemotional traits and narcissistic traits, psychological dysregulation also accounted for significant variance in overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency. The pathological personality traits approach, comprised of callous-unemotional traits, narcissistic traits, and borderline traits performed second best. In particular, within this approach borderline traits accounted for the most unique variance, followed by narcissistic traits, then callous-unemotional traits. Borderline traits accounted for significant variance in overt aggression, relational aggression, and delinquency when controlling for the Big Five traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. Narcissistic traits only accounted for significant variance in overt aggression and relational aggression after controlling for the Big Five personality traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. CU traits only accounted for significant variance in overt aggression after controlling for the Big Five personality traits, but not after controlling for psychological dysregulation. The social and personality model, represented by the vii Big Five personality traits accounted for the least amount of variance in the prediction of aggression and delinquency, on its own, and when pitted against the other two personality approaches. The exception was that the Big Five personality traits accounted for significant variance in relational aggression beyond narcissistic traits. Such research often is conducted in facilities that are outside of traditional medical settings. In these non-clinical settings, physicians may not be involved in the research, and there may not be medical backup facilities readily available on site. Given the lack of comprehensive guidance on MRI research on human participants conducted outside of traditional medical settings, the Council Workgroup was established to consider safety, legal, and ethical concerns raised by the use of MRI across various settings. Objective: Translation, cultural adaptation and validation of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the Edinburgh Claudication Questionnaire (ECQ) a specific tool to assess intermittent claudication. Methods: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the ECQ was developed after authorization by the University of Edinburgh. It was applied to 217 individuals: São Paulo Capital District residents with complaints of leg pain. Individuals under research were invited through mass communication media to participate in the I Campaign to Fight Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD). In stage 1, participants filled out the ECQ and another questionnaire on risk factors and cardiovascular history. In stage 2, participants had anthropometric measures and ankle-brachial index (ABI) at rest measured by and/or positive VTT and/or documented PAD. Statistical analysis -which included performance assessment and the comparison between proportions and means -was performed using SAS software, version 8.2. Results: > Conclusion: The Brazilian Portuguese version of the Edinburgh claudication questionnaire maintained good sensitivity and specificity and can be recommended for screening of PAD in clinical practice and epidemiological research in Brazil.

Mathematics anxiety is an issue shared by several students at any secondary school. It has extensive implications for students' performance, self-esteem, career options, and mental health status. The paper reviews the intricate causes of mathematics anxiety, including cognitive, environmental, learner, parental, and societal factors. This work shall evaluate the negative effects of reduced student grades from mathematics anxiety and further prospects. It also reviews some effective strategies and interventions that aim at mitigating math anxiety, which takes the path of pedagogical changes, counselling methods, and supportive systems. In essence, this result means teachers and education policymakers should work on creating an enabling environment for students to feel more confident and motivated to learn math and support its enhancement for better math skills and general well-being.

Purpose: The aim of this systematic review was to identify published evidence on the association between common mental disorders (CMDs), changes in socioeconomic outcomes, and social mobility. Methods: Systematic literature searches were conducted across seven databases up to May 2022. Quantitative studies were included based on the following criteria: 1) cohort study design, 2) the population had a common mental disorder, 3) Outcomes reported related to social mobility and social class (due to the limited direct measures of social mobility and social class, changes in socioeconomic outcomes were included as proxies of social mobility). The identi ed studies were analysed using narrative synthesis. Results: There was more evidence for the negative intragenerational than intergenerational association of CMDs on educational attainment, income, and occupational status. Considering the intergenerational association on educational attainment, there was an association between parental mental health disorders on parent-child interactions which subsequently affects their child's mental health. This in turn may negatively impact their child's educational progression. Only one study investigated the direct association of CMDs with changes in social class and subsequent social mobility. Conclusion: Given the evidence of the negative intragenerational association between CMDs and socioeconomic outcomes, it is important to promote mental health interventions adapted to the work and educational environment that adequately equip individuals to maintain their own mental health. Additionally, within the home environment, there is a need to further understand how negative parent-child interactions impact a child's mental health and develop strategies to mitigate how this may impact subsequent social mobility.

This paper explores the connection between various forms of anxiety and panic attacks and deficits in the development of core emotional competencies: neutralization, mentalization, object wholeness and object constancy, tolerance of ambivalence and frustration, will, and initiative. These competencies represent fundamental emotional processing and regulation capacities that enable individuals to cope with life's challenges and the emotions they evoke. When underdeveloped, each of these competencies gives rise to a specific form of anxiety: a deficit in neutralization leads to anxiety related to emotional overload and loss of control; impaired mentalization is associated with social anxiety and misinterpretation of one's own and others' actions; a lack of object wholeness results in persecutory anxiety and fear of disillusionment or guilt when love and aggression are directed toward the same object; compromised object constancy underlies separation anxiety; low frustration tolerance manifests as anxiety in the face of unmet needs; insufficient ambivalence tolerance produces decisionmaking anxiety; a weakened will leads to anxiety around self-support and persistence; and deficits in initiative evoke fears of visibility, rivalry, and symbolic "castration anxiety." These distinct anxieties are frequently observed in clients suffering from one of the eight identified types of panic attacks. Identifying the specific fears associated with each underdeveloped emotional competency allows clinicians to detect areas of deficit and focus therapeutic work on unlocking and strengthening the relevant capacity, using targeted techniques outlined in the taxonomy of therapeutic goals within OLI Integrative Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

Sexual harassment (SH) is a form of illegal, unwelcome sexual act, and other verbal and physical conduct of a sexual nature in the workplace and other environments. This paper aims to analyze the situation and its effect on Nepalese society. The systematic review procedures were followed using Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. This paper has covered to eligible and inclusion of all articles and search databases published on Nepjol, ResearchGate, Taylor and Francis, Mind and Society between 2019 and May 2023, to be written in English, specially, survey relating to the topic of sexual harassment in those open access journal articles. The initial trial and error method was used to select the sample articles at different times, titles and contents. Most of the sexual harassment study was found in Kathmandu Valley targeting the higher school level of female students. The study found that the majority of victims were female, with girls being the most affected by males. The systematic review revealed that the targeted participants were female rather than male. However, there was a sample bias, nonprobability sampling techniques, and a lack of inferential research. The findings support that the systematic review identified the common types of it, various perpetrators, and physical, verbal, and non-verbal effects on the victim. Sexually, the majority of victims were female. A systematic review and descriptive research design are limited, with inferential analysis lacking. Policy reviews and surveys are lacking. Future research should focus on preventive measures, policy formulations, and exploring more areas to address sexual harassment and its effects on individuals and society.

Anxiety represents the behavioral, emotional and cognitive response of the person on experience if potential or future danger. Pathological anxiety occurs when this reaction is unreasonable, that is it is not proportionate to the stress or challenge, and it leads to intense fear, nervousness and impaired functioning. Anxiety can occur in any period of life. Adolescence is a turbulent developmental period that increases the risk of young people to develop numerous mental disorders. Numerous predictors determinate the development of anxiety in adolescents. Prevention of anxiety disorders in adolescents is a public health priority, therefore it is necessary to identify risk factors and implement activities to suppress these factors.

Background: The perception of self-discrepancies between the actual self and the ideal self has been defined as a cognitive risk factor for depression (Higgins, 1987). In this view, self-discrepancy monitoring (SDM) refers to the voluntary re-orientation of attention towards detecting discrepancies between ideal and actual selves, even in a positive situation. Aims: The goal of this study was to explore the impact of SDM on levels of mood in the face of positive stimuli. Method: Two clinical and two non-clinical samples were recruited from two different European countries (Italy and Romania). Individuals demonstrate defensive mechanisms. The current study refers to the immature defense mechanisms of learners. It aims to investigate how immature defense mechanisms among learners, especially those of emerging adults, impair self-regulated learning. We analyze how immature defense mechanisms can affect the different processes of self-regulated learning based on the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scales (DMRS) and Zimmerman's cyclical model of self-regulated learning. This study shows that using immature defensive mechanisms may not only have a negative influence on the activated self-efficacy beliefs of the learner but also on the subsequent processes of the forethought, performance, and self-reflection phases of self-regulated learning. The consequence is a suppressed awareness of learning, which increases as the adaptiveness of defenses decreases. This research reveals the close connection between self-regulated learning and ego development, emphasizing the strong role of an educated ego for learning that obtains pleasure while acknowledging reality.

Objective: To validate a French version of the Family Assessment Device (FAD), a well-known self-report questionnaire assessing family functioning in clinical and research settings. Methods: A French adaptation of the FAD was administered to 3 groups of subjects: a nonclinical group ( n = 115), relatives of psychiatric patients ( n = 102), and medical patients and their relatives ( n = 106). Temporal stability was assessed by test–retest intraclass correlations. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach alpha reliability coefficients. Discriminant validity was explored, comparing the scores of the 3 groups, using a covariance analysis (ANCOVA). The dimensional structure of the instrument was explored using a principal component analysis, with promax oblique rotation, on the entire sample. The relationship between depression and aggressive behaviors in adolescents has previously been reported in clinical and epidemiological studies. However, there is conflicting evidence concerning the effect of gender on this relationship. This study tested whether the link between depressive symptoms and physical aggression differed between boys and girls in a large community-based sample of adolescents. A cross-sectional sample of adolescents aged 15-19 (N = 6,677) was studied within the 2007 ESPAD national survey. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the Adolescent Depression Rating Scale. We distinguished adolescents with subthreshold levels of depressive symptoms and adolescents with clinically significant levels of depressive symptoms. Physical aggressive behaviors in the last year were reported using items from the Antisocial Behavior Scale. Objective. To help identify and advance the understanding of the potential mechanisms underlying the association between parents' and adolescents' psychological maladjustment in obesity, we evaluated bulimic behaviours and psychopathology in a clinical sample of obese adolescents and in their parents. Methods. This is a cross-sectional cohort study including 115 severely obese, treatment-seeking adolescents aged 12-17 years (mean age: 14.2; mean body mass index z-score: 4.32), and their parents (115 mothers and 96 fathers). Adolescents fi lled out the Bulimic Investigatory Test, Edinburgh (BITE), the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC). Their parents completed the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ) and the BITE. A child psychiatrist fi lled out the Montgomery and Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) and the Brief Scale for Anxiety (BSA) for the adolescents. Results. Obese adolescents demonstrated signifi cant correlations between the severity of bulimic symptoms and the degree of emotional symptomatology, such as depression and anxiety, but not with the severity of obesity. Psychopathological maladjustment and bulimic symptoms in obese adolescents were signifi cantly associated with the maternal psychopathological disturbances, especially anxiety and somatisation in mother. In fact, maternal psychopathology, not maternal bulimic symptoms, was the factor most strongly associated with bulimic behaviours in obese adolescents. Discussion. These results highlight the importance of including an adolescent and parental psychiatric assessment (bulimic, depressive and anxiety symptoms), particularly maternal psychopathology in the treatment of severely obese adolescents.

Background: In November 2007, a student shot eight people and himself at Jokela High School, Finland. This study aims to evaluate the long-term effects of exposure to a school shooting among adolescents. Method: Associations between psychological outcomes and background factors were analysed and compared with ''comparison students'' four months after the incident. A questionnaire including Impact of Event Scale (IES) and General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-36) was used. Results: Half of the females and a third of the males suffered from posttraumatic distress. High level of posttraumatic distress (IES 35), predicting PTSD, was observed in 27% of the females and 7% of the males. The odds ratio was 6.4 (95% confidence interval 3.5-10.5) for having high levels of posttraumatic distress. Severe or extreme exposure and female gender were found to increase the risk. Forty-two percent of the females and 16% of the males had psychiatric disturbance (GHQ 9). Severe or extreme exposure, older age and female gender increased the risk. Perceived support from family and friends was found to be protective. Conclusions: The observed risk and protective factors were similar to earlier studies. Follow-up will be essential in identifying factors predicting persisting trauma-related symptoms in adolescence.

We investigated whether psychiatric symptomatology, impulsivity, family and social dysfunction, and alcohol use mediate the relationship between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and suicidality. The study population comprised 206 adolescent psychiatric inpatients and 203 age-and gender-matched adolescents from the community. ACEs and suicidality were assessed using the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia for School-Age Children -Present and Lifetime version, the Life Events Checklist, and a structured background data collection sheet. Psychiatric symptomatology was measured using the Symptom Checklist -90. Impulsivity, social dysfunction, and family dysfunction were measured using the Offer Self-Image Questionnaire, and alcohol use was assessed with the Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test. A simple mediation test and multiple mediation analyses were conducted. A positive direct effect of ACEs on suicidality was observed. Also seen was a positive indirect effect of ACEs on suicidality through psychiatric symptomatology, impulsivity, and family and social dysfunctions. Alcohol misuse did not, however, mediate the relationship between ACEs and suicidality. According to the multiple mediation analyses, psychiatric symptomatology was the most significant mediator, followed by impulsivity. Psychiatric symptoms, impulsivity, and family and social dysfunctions are factors that should be taken into consideration when assessing suicidality in adolescents.

Research on the predictors of outcome for early, community-based, and time-limited interventions targeted for clinical depression in adolescents is still scarce. We examined the role of demographic, psychosocial, and clinical variables as predictors of outcome in a trial conducted in Finnish school health and welfare services to identify factors associating to symptom reduction and remission after a brief depression treatment. A total of 55 12–16-year-olds with mild to moderate depression received six sessions of either interpersonal counseling for adolescents (IPC-A) or brief psychosocial support (BPS). In order to offer early and accessible treatment for adolescents with depression, brief and effective treatments in adolescents’ everyday surroundings are needed. This randomized controlled trial studied the preliminary effectiveness, feasibility, and acceptability of interpersonal counseling (IPC) and brief psychosocial support (BPS) in school health and welfare services. The study was conducted in the 28 lower secondary schools of a large city in Southern Finland, randomized to provide either IPC or BPS. Help-seeking 12–16-year-old adolescents with mild-to-moderate depression, with and without comorbid anxiety, were included in the study. Fifty-five adolescents received either 6 weekly sessions of IPC or BPS and two follow-up sessions. The COVID-19 outbreak is an example of a crisis that triggered an increase in generalized anxiety disorder. The study aims to validate the Polish version of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item scale (GAD-7) by Spitzer et al. among a non-clinical sample of employees and examine the invariance depending on the gender and age of working adults. Material and Methods: For assessing factor structure of the Polish version of the GAD-7, the data were collected from a sample of 821 adults employed in 4 economic sectors (health care, education, IT, public administration) during the initial phase of the COVID-19 pandemic in Poland (April 10-May 24, 2020). Due to differences in the severity of GAD symptoms across gender and age groups, the measurement invariance in these groups was tested. Results: The results of a series of confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the unidimensionality of the GAD-7. The values of the composite reliability index and Cronbach's α showed that it is a reliable tool. The GAD levels demonstrated strong relationships with professional burnout, psychological distress, and psychological complaints. These relationships were stronger than the relationships between these factors and job satisfaction. Construct, metric and scalar invariance across gender and age groups were documented. Women experienced more severe symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder than men. Generalized anxiety disorder affected 28% of respondents. Conclusions: This study contributes evidence of the validation of the GAD among employees and also confirms the invariance depending on gender and age. The Polish version of the GAD-7 has good psychometric properties in a group of professionals and can be recommended for research and to be used in an occupational medicine practice, especially during crisis periods associated with the risk of developing a generalized anxiety disorder.

The purpose of this study was to determine whether cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) operates by effecting changes in cognitions, affects, and coping behaviors in the context of painful episodes. Patients were 54 men and women with temporomandibular dysfunction-related orofacial pain (TMD) enrolled in a study of brief (6 weeks) standard conservative treatment (STD) or standard treatment plus CBT (STD+CBT). Momentary affects, pain, and coping processes were recorded on a cellphone keypad four times per day for seven days prior to treatment, and for 14 days after treatment had finished, in an experience sampling paradigm. Analyses indicated no treatment effects on general retrospective measures of pain, depression, or pain-related interference with lifestyle at posttreatment. However, mixed model analyses on momentary pain and coping recorded pre-and posttreatment indicated that STD+CBT patients reported greater decreases in pain than did STD patients, significantly greater increases in the use of active cognitive and behavioral coping, and significantly decreased catastrophization. Analyses of experience sampling data indicated that posttreatment momentary pain was negatively predicted by concurrent active coping, self-efficacy, perceived control over pain, and positive-high arousal affect. Concurrent catastrophization was strongly predictive of pain. Active behavioral coping and self-efficacy reported at the prior time point (about 3 hours previously) were also protective, while prior catastrophization and negative-high arousal mood were predictive of momentary pain. The results suggest that CB treatment for TMD pain can help patients alter their coping behaviors, and that these changes translate into improved outcomes.

Cognitive control is a core feature of several mental disorders. A recent account poses that health problems may derive from proactive forms of cognitive control that maintain stress representation over time. The working hypothesis of the present study is that psychological distress is caused by the tendency to select a particular maladaptive self-regulation strategy over time, namely perseverative thinking, rather than by transient stimulus–response patterns. In order to explain relevant health status dimensions in fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), this ex post facto study explores relationships between control beliefs, illness-focused coping and emotions. The study additionally sought to clarify the role of coping and emotions as potential mediators in the relationship between control beliefs and perceived health outcomes. Structural equation modelling was employed. A total of 315 FMS patients of various primary care and rheumatology centres participated in the study, and completed measures of health status, control beliefs, coping, anxiety and depression. Analyses revealed that control belief constructs that contain the competence element (self-efficacy and perceived health competence) have a direct effect on all health status areas examined. The findings also suggested the mediating role of emotions between competence beliefs and both physical and psychosocial impact, while illness-coping behaviour significantly mediates the relationship between self-efficacy and physical impact. Control beliefs and emotions are central elements in explaining the overall impact of FMS. Individuals worldwide share basic affective and cognitive abilities, and receive mental health diagnoses using similar scales, yet surprisingly little research has examined the validity of these measures across cultures. Here, we performed direct comparison between British participants (N = 187; 51.3% female, 48.7% male; age 19-73 years) and Chinese participants (N = 194; 66.5% female, 33.5% male; age 19-60 years) in mid-2022 on behavioural tasks of facial emotion recognition (with and without contextual faces) and sustained attention, as well as mental health measures of anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and impulsivity. We found that British participants were better at recognising emotions, especially negative emotions; while Chinese participants showed higher obsessive-compulsive symptoms, driven primarily by one specific scale item. This study investigates agricultural extension officers' perception of readiness and barriers towards implementation of ICT programme. Data were gathered from 312 extension officers affiliated with public organisations of the Ministry of Agriculture in four regencies of Indonesia. Descriptive statistics, exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis, and one-way ANOVA were applied to analyse the data. In order to provide better insights, this study adopts the assessment model of e-LRS to measure the readiness of ICT programme implementation. The first finding reveals that they perceived that three out of the four factors of readiness as positive. The e-LRS assessment revealed that they perceived farmer readiness as lowest and thus considered it as a barrier. The second finding reveals that technological and organisational cultures were also seen as the main barriers of ICT programme implementation. The third findings show that they felt that the two demographic variables, regency and age, must also be considered when ICT programmes are implemented. The results of this study can provide guidance to the government or relevant organisations when considering readiness and barriers towards implementing ICT programmes. In addition, this study advances the theory of adoption behavior and contributes to the foundation for future research aimed at improving our understanding of agricultural extension officers' behavior.

An orientation to promote good (i.e., a disposition to take actions that contribute to the good of oneself and others) has been associated with better health and well-being outcomes. However, less is known about how orientation to promote good differs across countries and across sociodemographic groups within different countries. Using a sample of 202,898 adults from 22 diverse countries, this study examined the distribution of orientation to promote good across key sociodemographic groups within each country separately, and cross-nationally by pooling estimates across countries. Our results suggest that population mean levels of promoting good vary substantially across countries. In the pooled results, the means of promoting good also vary across most of the sociodemographic factors that we examined. Specifically, individuals who are older, female, married, employed or retired, highly educated, attending religious services frequently, and native-born reported higher means of promoting good than those in other demographic groups. In country-specific analyses, the sociodemographic variation in promoting good also differs across countries, indicating diverse societal influences. This study provides novel insights into the social distribution of orientation to promote good, which paves the way for future investigations into sociocultural influences that may shape individuals' expression of character across different national contexts.

It has been suggested that the personality of the individual influences appraisal processes that determine ratings of both social support and mental health, thus leading to an association between these variables that reflects only their shared self-report bias. To test whether ratings of social support made by someone other than the target individual would significantly predict outcomes, 115 pregnant adolescent girls and 115 adults who knew the adolescents well both completed ratings of the adolescent's social support. Results showed a moderate level of agreement between adolescent and informant support ratings. Both self-report and informant total social support ratings predicted pregnancy depression scores. Only informant social support ratings were significant predictors of postpartum depression scores. The ability of informants' ratings of social support to predict the adjustment of the adolescents to a major life stress was viewed as evidence that the commonly found link between social support and mental health reflects more than self-report biases. After more than a decade of relatively uncritical acceptance, research linking social support to positive health outcomes has come under intense scrutiny. Although hundreds of social support studies have been published, most of which have found some association between support and mental or physical health, almost all have been correlational and are vulnerable to a number of alternative explanations for the obtained results. Social support was originally conceptualized as an environmental variable, a resource that resides outside the individual (e.g., . The contributions of genetic and both positive and negative environmental factors were tested in the prediction of alcohol abuse/dependence among 300 adult adoptees. No direct effects for either genetic or environmental factors were significant in the prediction of adoptee alcohol abuse/dependence. However, among women, early-life family conflict and psychopathology in the adoptive family interacted with a biological background of alcoholism. Among women with at B OTH GENETIC and environmental factors have been implicated in the etiology of alcohol abuse. The current investigation was designed to investigate the individual and interactive contributions of biological predisposition (i.e., alcoholic biological parent) and the environment in the etiology of alcoholism. All participants were adopted away from their biological homes soon after birth, thus allowing separation of genetic and environmental factors. We assessed not only adverse circumstances that might interact with biological predisposition to increase the probability of alcohol abuse (e.g., substance abuse or psychopathology in adoptive family member, conflict among adoptive family members), we also assessed positive factors in the environment that might decrease the probability that the biological predisposition would be expressed (cohesive adoptive family environment). Although lifetime prevalence rates for alcohol dependence and/or abuse remain significantly lower among women (4.2% to 4.8%) than among men (19.1% to 28.9%),' rates of alcoholism among women have been increasing. Much of the research on alcohol abuse has focused exclusively on men. Thus, there is a need for research on risk factors for alcohol abuse and dependence among women. This need is especially pressing, since there is some evidence that different factors are most influential in the etiology of alcoholism for men and women.2-3 Results have been inconsistent in studies that have contrasted concordance rates for monozygotic versus dizygotic twins to estimate the least one alcoholic biological parent, conflict or psychopathology in the adoptive family increased the probability of alcohol abuse and/or dependence. The Questions About Behavioral Function (QABF), a 25-item rating scale, was developed to identify the function(s) of maladaptive behavior in individuals with developmental disabilities. The authors adapted it for use with individuals with serious mental illness who engage in maladaptive behavior and assessed the psychometric characteristics of the new scale (Questions About Behavioral Function in Mental Illness; QABF-MI) in a sample of 135 adults with serious mental illness from three inpatient psychiatric hospitals. Staff most familiar with each person rated each item on a 5-point Likert-type rating scale, and the ratings were subjected to a number of psychometric analyses. The results of factor analyses provided a conceptually meaningful five-factor solution: physical discomfort, social attention, tangible reinforcement, escape, and nonsocial reinforcement. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is expressed with neurobehavioral symptoms of different degrees of intensity. It is estimated that, for every three cases detected, there are two cases that reach adulthood without treatment. Objective: To establish what challenges are still present in the implementation of early intervention (EI) and its effects on the prognosis of ASD. Methods: A systematic review using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (Prisma) methodology was carried out in the PubMed and ScienceDirect databases in January 2023. The search keywords were "autism spectrum disorder", "early intervention" and "prognosis". Results: Sixteen studies were included, two randomized and 14 non-randomized. Knowledge about the signs of ASD, diagnostic and therapeutic methods, age at the start of treatment, and socioeconomic factors were the main challenges encountered in the implementation of the EI. Conclusion: EI is capable of modifying the prognosis of ASD and challenges in its implementation persist, especially in developing regions with low socioeconomic status.

This article presents a new interview-based research instrument for assessing schizotypal symptoms and signs. The Structured Interview for Schizotypy (SIS), which was developed from experience gained in a large, controlled family study of schizophrenia in the west of Ireland and has been field-tested in three other locations, differs from previously available interviews in that it includes: (1) built-in contextual assessments of the pathological nature of certain symptoms (e.g., suspiciousness or ideas of reference); (2) multiple independently scored items, most with closed response options, per symptom scale; (3) extensive assessment of schizotypal signs; (4) symptom probes designed to make responding positively appear nondeviant; and (5) coverage of potentially relevant symptoms and signs not required in current criteria for schizotypal personality disorder. Schizotypal symptoms can be assessed with high reliability by the SIS. When sufficient variability is present, schizotypal signs are also reliably assessed by the SIS, although the reliability is generally lower than that found for symptoms. In three independent pilot studies, schizotypal symptoms and signs assessed by the SIS appear to discriminate significantly the relatives of schizophrenic patients from relatives of controls.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of coping strategies and relaxation exercises on anxiety, hopelessness, life satisfaction, and well-being in elderly people with diabetes. Materials and Methods: A total of 30 participants were randomly assigned to three experimental conditions. In the first condition, the participants were informed about diabetes as well as how to cope with it. In the second condition, the participants were provided with breathing and relaxation exercises, which were accompanied by relaxing music, in addition to informing about diabetes and coping strategies. The control group was only informed about diabetes. The data were analyzed by ANOVA with 3 x 2 last factors repetitive. Results: There was no difference between the conditions in terms of state anxiety, hopelessness and life satisfaction scores (p>0.05), but the difference after the intervention was significant (p<0.05). According to the Scheffe test, a) status anxiety score was determined between the first condition and the control group; b) life satisfaction score was significantly different between the first condition and second condition and between the second condition and control group. Significant differences were also found between pre-and post-intervention concerning anxiety, hopelessness and life satisfaction scores. Conclusions: Findings suggest that explaining the methods of coping with diabetes can decrease the level of state anxiety, and the addition of breathing and relaxation exercises can enhance life satisfaction.

The insertion of Machine Learning (ML) in everyday life demonstrates the importance of popularizing an understanding of ML already in school. Accompanying this trend arises the need to assess the students’ learning. Yet, so far, few assessments have been proposed, most lacking an evaluation. Therefore, we evaluate the reliability and validity of an automated assessment of the students’ learning of an image classification model created as a learning outcome of the “ML for All!” course. Results based on data collected from 240 students indicate that the assessment can be considered reliable (coefficient Omega = 0.834/Cronbach&#39;s alpha α=0.83). We also identified moderate to strong convergent and discriminant validity based on the polychoric correlation matrix. This study was carried out to determine the effect of mindfulness on organizational health. Data were collected from 620 actively working white and blue-collar volunteers in Istanbul. The sample was reached through the convenience sampling method. Analyzes were carried out on 615 valid surveys. Background: Burnout among Health Care workers (HCWs) impacts on providerpatient relations and quality of care. Anova Health Institute (Anova) is a large South African non-profit organization and PEPFAR/USAID implementing partner. We conducted a study among HCWs providing HIV-related services in primary care settings in Johannesburg, South Africa, to examine levels of burnout, understand factors affecting workplace wellbeing, and explore strategies to prevent burnout. We used a sequential mixed-method approach. Data were collected between February and April 2022. The first phase consisted of a survey using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) to measure levels of burnout. We then interviewed a subset of survey participants to understand the experiences that may affect wellbeing. We used descriptive statistics to quantify burnout rates for each MBI dimension (emotional exhaustion, personal accomplishment, and depersonalization). Qualitative data analysis was guided by the Job Demands-Resources Framework that explores the interactions between demands and resources in the workplace. Results: Survey findings (n = 194) revealed that although depersonalization rates were low at 6%, 21% of participants had high emotional exhaustion and 24% reported low professional accomplishment. Less than half (41%, n = 80) had scores in the high category for any one of the three MBI-HSS dimensions. The MBI-HSS dimensions differed significantly by type of work and job title. Roving positions (HCW working in more than one health facility) were more likely to experience higher emotional exhaustion and lower professional accomplishment. Qualitative findings (n = 25) indicate that a number of job demands, including high workload, inadequate mental health support, and challenging relationships with stakeholders, had a negative effect on HCWs' wellbeing. However, finding meaningfulness in their work, working as a team, and practicing autonomy were experienced as resources that reduced the negative effect of these demands. While measured burnout syndrome rates were low, various experiences negatively impacted at least one in five HCW. We identified key resources that provided buffering against workplace stressors. We recommend that as well as addressing key drivers of burnout, access to these resources should be fostered, for example by strengthening interventions that offer recognition, and promoting team interactions through social activities and support groups.
