The existence of a peaceful and civilised
world depends primarily on education.
The aim of the Accademia association is the promotion of primary and secondary education, allowing disadvantaged children to receive the necessary training.
The members of the organisation selected Brazil for their first project, an area presented to them by the then priest of the Saint-Charles Parish in Monaco, Father Formentini, a native of missions, around Porto Alegre in the south of the country.
A centre providing supplementary education was consequently built in Santa Isabel, near Porto Alegre, in partnership with the Friends of the St. Charles Parish and thanks to donations collected during the January 2007 Brazilian evening. The centre was inaugurated on November 17, 2007, the day celebrating Santa Isabel.
Since January, the centre has been accommodating nearly 300 young people after school. It is run by the Santa Isabel Association, which already handles other similar centres. Various activities are available, including a programme of supplementary support for children with learning difficulties, and leisure activities to develop motor co-ordination and self-esteem.
Accademia hopes to create primary education infrastructures in disadvantaged geographical areas equivalent to those available in the major cities, and to sustain a high level of teaching with annual bonuses.
The goal is to build several education centres in each geographical area and create a positive dynamic amongst the local authorities concerned, Models of primary education such as these, will ultimately prove to be development engines for the region.
To this end, Accademia has selected two other projects in the Porto Alegre region, and more particularly in Santa Isabel itself.
