TYLECOTE Two Roman lead waste samples from the site of the forum (Insula I) at Cathedral Green were analysed: CG 2919 from a mid to late second-century layer (F.ph. 6, P.ph. 258) and CG 2920 from a mid fourth-to ?early fifth-century layer (F.ph. 14-16, P.ph. 305). 10 Both were leads and not lead-tin alloys. They were found to have a low quantity of silver (each has less than 10 ppm) and could have been produced from low-silver ores such as those in Derbyshire, or from desilverized lead. 10 Previously published in WS 7.ii, 93, Table .

In the year 2023, the preventive archaeological research carried out for the Precista Hospital building rehabilitation project took place in two areas (marked S.1 and S.2). Since the archaeological results from Surface S.1 (located in front of the mentioned hospital) have already been exploited, in the content of this article we briefly present the archaeological discoveries from Surface S.2, obtained in the same campaign from 2023. The archaeological investigation took into account the Precista Mare church area, for which 778 burial graves were discovered, dating from the medieval and modern eras (15 - 19 centuries). More than half of the graves contained funerary inventory, especially coins, but also pieces of clothing. At the same time, two bodies of stone masonry were found, which were outbuildings of the mentioned religious place. The first is from the first half of the 17th century, and the second from the second half of the 18th century. The dwellings, household pits and ovens are other important vestiges of the old center of the Roman town.

The settlement in Poljana Križevačka certainly represents the largest so far investigated area and the largest number of buildings from the Late La Tene Period documented in the wider Križevci area. The publication of movable materials as well as the infrastructure of the settlement considerably complements the knowledge of this period in a wider area. Ceramic finds have been analyzed typologically, with accompanying analogies from the wider region that enable the dating of the finds and the placement of the site in the regional context. It also gives an overview of settlements with comparable infrastructure. The conclusion is that it is a late La Tene settlement with continuity into the early Roman period that had a rural character and belonged to the eastern area of ​​territory attributed to the Taurisci, with the best analogies in the area of ​​Podravina and northeastern Slovenia.

An Anglo-Saxon silver strap-end, found in 2019, is a common artefact-type but, unusually, this one also contains an inscribed runic text utilising the relatively common Old English maker formula 'N made this.' However one graph, obscured by deterioration on the surface of the metal, as well as by idiosyncrasies in the orthography, poses intriguing challenges to interpretation. We discuss various possibilities and alternative suggestions, and report on a technologically-aided attempt to uncover a crucial rune that is obscured by corrosion.

Although amongst the most iconic and clearly visible of prehistoric remains in Britain, Hillforts are generally poorly investigated and understood. There are some 3000 known sites in Britain and Ireland.
A project run by Oxford and Edinburgh Universities is creating a definitive Atlas of Iron Age Hillforts in Britain and Ireland; this database is used to identify patterns in the distribution of Hillforts in the British Isles, using modern spatial analysis and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) methods and tools.
Initial analysis focuses on identifying groupings of Hillforts using percolation analysis, based purely on the Euclidean distance between them, a technique applied in geography. This has produced results showing clusters in Britain that have distinctive regional characteristics. It has also been applied in Ireland, showing quite a different pattern.
This study continues with analyses to identify possible territorial and hierarchical relationships between Hillforts within selected clusters, based on the sites’ enclosed area, and these are explored for possible explanations. Spatial comparisons are also applied with other classes of monument, boundary data and with finds from the Portable Antiquities Scheme in order to identify spatial relationships and possible patterns of continuity through time.

The ordo missae of Cod. Fab. VII, produced in the 12th century at the Abbey of Pfäfers, represents a unique witness of the so-called “Rhenish” type. Through codicological and comparative analysis, the manuscript reveals significant affinities with the centers of St. Gall and Reichenau, while maintaining distinctive features tied to its local context. Textual interpolations and ritual specificities highlight an adaptation of liturgical practice to the parish setting for which it was intended, providing insights into the evolution of the ordines missae in Europe and offering an opportunity to reflect on the current state of historiography on the subject.

L’ordo missae del Cod. Fab. VII, prodotto nel XII secolo presso l’abbazia di Pfäfers, rappresenta una testimonianza singolare di ordo del tipo cosiddetto renano. Attraverso un’analisi codicologica e comparativa, il manoscritto rivela significative affinità con i centri di San Gallo e Reichenau, pur mantenendo tratti distintivi legati al contesto locale. Le interpolazioni testuali e le specificità rituali evidenziano un adattamento della prassi liturgica al contesto parrocchiale di destinazione, offrendo uno spaccato sull’evoluzione degli ordines missae in Europa e offrendo l’occasione di riflettere sull’attuale stato della storiografia in merito.

El presente artículo explora la frontera renana en la Antigüedad Tardía como un espacio de interacción y transculturación entre Roma y los pueblos bárbaros. A partir del análisis de fuentes clásicas y evidencias arqueológicas, se examina la evolución del limes renano, desde su función como barrera militar hasta su transformación en una zona de contacto y negociación cultural. Se revisan aspectos clave como el impacto de las migraciones germánicas, el papel de los foederati en la defensa del Imperio, la integración de estructuras políticas bárbaras en la administración romana y la influencia mutua en prácticas económicas y materiales. De tal forma, lejos de ser un límite rígido, la frontera renana se revela como un espacio dinámico donde romanos y bárbaros redefinieron sus identidades. Así, a través de este análisis, el artículo desafía la dicotomía entre civilización y barbarie, y propone una lectura en la que la frontera no es el fin de Roma, sino el germen de una nueva realidad híbrida en Europa occidental.

The church of Santa Maria d' Àneu, located in the Àneu valley of the Catalan Pyrenees, holds significant yet debated historical importance within the ecclesiastical structure of the medieval period. While renowned for its Romanesque paintings, its exact role within the Àneu deanery remains unclear. This article explores whether the church's visibility and the audibility of its bells across the landscape, as a representation of ecclesiastical power, extended across the 22 parishes of the Àneu valley. The study is based on onsite acoustic measurements, virtual sound propagation simulations using the ArcGIS Sound Mapping Tools plugin, and different visibility models built with the QGIS Visibility Analysis toolbox. The findings suggest the existence of a bell aural network among most parishes in the Àneu deanery, positioning Santa Maria d' Àneu as a central church within the district.

La lastra sepolcrale cristiana di Flamininus, ritrovata nel 1872 nei pressi della chiesa di San Valentino a Caldonazzo (Trento), sembra potersi datare al VI-VII secolo. L'articolo la analizza dai punti di vista epigrafico e stilistico, collocandola nel più ampio contesto del sito di San Valentino, il quale, stando a quanto riportato nei documenti d'archivio, ha restituito nel corso del tempo materiali databili tra Tardoantico e Medioevo.

This article presents an interdisciplinary programme for research on historic landscapes that has emerged since 2020 in the framework of the project Terraces as Sustainable Agricultural Environments ('TerraSAgE'). While the methodology has been tested in specific Mediterranean case studies, it is also applicable in other locations and regions. Our integrated approach provides new insights into the development of terraced agrarian landscapes and the changing dynamics in land management. It can provide knowledge of the extent to which past change has influenced present-day landscapes and has implications for the development of sustainable landscape practices. The research framework proposed here has been tested through case studies in different landscape types across southern Europe, including small-scale mixed farming landscapes of the Aegean islands (Naxos, Greece); terraces for vines and olives (Pelješac, Croatia); a landscape of dairy production (northern Apennines, Italy), which was until quite recently agroforestry; modern cereal cultivation (around Els Prats de Rei, Catalonia, Spain); upland irrigated landscapes on the slopes of the Sierra Nevada (Andalucia, Spain) and mixed farming in a wooded Atlantic environment (Galicia, Spain). 1 | Introduction Across the world terraced landscapes have been created to produce diverse crops, to improve soils and to manage water resources-historically, they have been widespread in many areas of both dry-land and irrigated agriculture. Bronze bells are repeatedly found as grave goods in the tombs of the warlike equestrian nomads of the Scythian culture. A rare and rather specific form of bell in the shape of a pyramid spread in the northern Black Sea region. It was very popular among the late Scythians of the Crimean peninsula. These objects were only found as grave goods in children’s and women’s graves. Their purpose is still not entirely clear. Most researchers interpret them as cultic objects which, as sound-producing charms, could bring protection against evil. Three such bells from the northern Black Sea region came to the Berlin Museum for Pre- and Early History at the beginning of the 20th century.

El monacato femenino pervivió en al-Andalus de diversas formas: monasterios dobles, monasterios exclusivamente femeninos y comunidades ascéticas urbanas, aunque estas últimas fueron desapareciendo progresivamente a medida que se publicaban recomendaciones para su transformación en cenobios. Sus prácticas se relacionaban con el monacato tal y como lo conocemos por las reglas y hagiografías visigodas, pero también con modelos importados de Palestina y Egipto, a través de las fundaciones monásticas del sur de Francia e Italia. Sin embargo, la evolución de la sociedad cristiana en los dos siglos siguientes exigió una adaptación y unos mecanismos de protección más sólidos para estas mujeres. Cuestiones como el papel de la mujer en la vida religiosa, el abandono de sus juramentos, los matrimonios no autorizados, la violencia y las violaciones y el papel de los edificios religiosos frente a la vivencia doméstica del ascetismo en la protección del estilo de vida de las comunidades fueron la principal preocupación de los legisladores.

Located in the eastern part of northern Italy, Verona is one of the best excavated Roman towns in this territory, and the funerary dimension of the ancient and medieval period is one of the best known. This paper systematically examines the ritual use of coins in late antique and early medieval burials documented in the city and its hinterland and links this situation to those observed in other contemporary cases in northern Italy. The analysis focuses on the position of the coinage in the tomb, the sex and age of those buried, and the types of coins used. For this purpose, forty-three burials from between the third and seventh centuries were selected, yielding a total of eighty-four coins minted between the first and fifth centuries. The cases are documented in excavations carried out with the stratigraphic method in the city and its hinterland in recent decades, although some chance finds (unexcavated) were considered due to the quality of the data. By illuminating the ritual use of coins in the Veneto during this barely studied period, this study provides a reference for the analysis of contemporary cases in other areas.

Dating the subterranean remnants of a medieval church in the garden of Sigtuna Museum has proved an elusive task since first excavated in 1915. Three hypothetical datings have been presented: c. 1080, c. 1150–1160, and c. 1220. New radiocarbon dates (Ua-84213 & Ua-84214) of charcoal in lime mortar from the church’s building phase have, after undergoing KDE plot in OxCal v4.4.4. (Bronk Ramsey 2017 & 2021), established the building period to between 1020 and 1120. Hence, the hypothetical dating c. 1080 stand firm as most plausible.

Изучению носителей меотской культуры по данным антропологии посвящено крайне малое количество научных работ. До настоящего времени полностью отсутствовали данные по одонтологии меотов. Представленная работа направлена на изучение морфологии зубной системы носителей меотской культуры на материалах эталонного памятника-Старокорсунского городища № 2. Раскопки погребений, включенных в работу, проводились с 1980 по 2020 г. Краснодарской археологической экспедицией Кубанского государственного университета под руководством Н.Ю. Лимберис и И.И. Марченко. На основе суммарной выборки, включающей 66 индивидов, были сформированы две хронологические группы: до I в. до н.э. и после I в. до н.э. Такое деление обусловлено появлением сармат у границ территории расселения меотов. Для статистического анализа были привлечены 28 географически близких сравнительных серий эпохи бронзы и раннего железа. Для исследуемой меотской серии характерно преобладание признаков западного одонтологического ствола, в качестве яркой особенности можно отметить высокие частоты бугорка Карабелли. Сравнение ранней и поздней выборок по частотам основных одонтоскопических признаков указывает на возможную метисацию населения городища с пришлым населением. Значения средних таксономических расстояний (СТР) между меотами и сравнительными сериями раннего железного века свидетельствуют об изменении вектора межпопуляционного взаимодействия со временем, что связано с увеличением концентрации восточных фенов в поздней меотской выборке. По данным анализа соответствий изученная в работе меотская группа занимает промежуточное положение между сериями Южного Приаралья, Южного Урала и Поднепровья. На данном этапе исследования полученные результаты могут отражать процессы взаимодействия между представителями оседлого населения Прикубанья и кочевой культуры скифов и сарматов. Съкровището от Над Сент Миклош е едно от забележителните и същевременно най-противоречиво тълкувани ранносредновековни открития в Източна Европа. Било е приемано за хунско ("Съкровището на Атила"), аварско, прабългарско, дори унгарско или славянско. Някои автори го смятат за "източно наследство", донесено от прииждащите от Азия номадски народи, други го приемат за местно произведение. Често авторите на тези допускания смесват притежание и произход: автоматично се приема, че доказаната принадлежност на неговия собственик към някой от тези народи прави съкровището образец на съответната торевтика. Причината за тази противоречивост е в характера на самото съкровище: в него се преплитат различни културни влияния -от Централна Азия до Източна Европа. Съдовете му са имали различен произход и различни собственици, някои от които са правели промени по тях и/или са добавяли надписи. Много вероятно е в сегашния си състав то да е било притежание само на последния собственик. Междувременно то представлява ценност в много отношения: като благороден метал с висока проба, като произведение на изкуството и като исторически, в частност, палеографски паметник. Последното е особено важно. Съкровището съдържа надписи на три езика, два от които са почти непознати: този на Аспаруховите българи, за който знаем малко, и езика на аварите, за който не знаем почти нищо. Евентуалният прочит на тези надписи не само ще обогати познанията ни за тях. Той ще хвърли допълнителна светлина и върху историята на самото съкровище, която се гради основно върху неговия искуствоведски анализ. Точно това си поставя за цел и настоящата книга. Този резултат може да бъде постигнат само с комплексен подход към проблема. Той трябва да включва, например, исторически, езиков, изкуствоведски и функционален анализ на данните, както и някои специфични физикохимични изследвания. От самото начало е ясно, че всички тези страни на изследването, по чисто технически причини, не могат да бъдат застъпени равностойно в нашия труд. Както личи още от заглавието, основната посока на това изследване е палеографският анализ на надписите от съкровището. Това е и най-слабо проучената, или по-точно, найслабо продуктивната негова страна. *** Няма да се спираме на историята около откриването на съкровището, сама по себе си доста интересна, защото не можем да добавим нови факти към нея. През двата века след това събитие тя е обрасла с варианти и легенди, особено забележими в популярната литература. Пътят на съкровището от ямата в земята до музея във Виена би могъл да е обект на самостоятелно научно изследване, което да отсее достоверното от измислицата. Но не това е нашата задача 1 . Ще отбележим само, че откритието за щастие е станало във високо организирано общество, каквото е Австрия на границата между 18 и 19 век и намереното е било запазено без съществени поражения по него. За съжаление, археологията тогава е била току-що прохождаща наука и на мястото на откриването не са проведени сериозни, по днешните стандарти, проучвания. Така сега единствените данни, с които разполагаме, са съдържащите се в самото съкровище, плюс важното допълнение, че знаем мястото, където е намерено през 1799 г. Очевидно, то е попаднало и останало там по обичайната за този вид находки последователност: заровено при извънредни обстоятелства, след което укривателят му не е могъл да се върне за него. Едно обстойно научно изследване на съкровището е направено от Й. Хампел (Hampel 1885). Неговата номерация на съдовете се ползва и до днес в специализираната литература и тук ще се придържаме към нея.

Beginnings of the kingdom. Church synods of Split, Tomislav and his era on the 1100th anniversary (International conference, Split, 8th-10th May 2025)

An early medieval inscription carved on a relief-decorated stone beam, discovered in 1953 near the Church of St. Michael above Ston, gave rise to a wealth of historiographic production within the first decade after its discovery, with discussions continuing until the late 1960s (C. Fisković, B. Gabričević, Lj. Karaman, J. Kovačević, J. Lučić, I. Ostojić, D. S. Popović, M. Vego, F. Vlašić), and occasionally thereafter. Both its epigraphic and artistic components were examined (M. Jurković), with particular attention focused on the text, which mentions the personal name Michael. The short inscription was thus linked to the Archangel Michael as a heavenly protector, though alternative interpretations were proposed, identifying the donor of the inscription with several rulers of the narrower Hum region (Michael Višević, early 10th century) or the broader area of Duklja (Michael Vojislavljević, late 11th century). All three possibilities were, in various contexts, associated with different stages in the construction of the eponymous Church of St. Michael. Accordingly, the chronology of the inscription shifted with changing interpretations. This paper will offer another proposal for reading and recontextualizing the epigraphic text, aiming to solidify the chronology and cultural background of the inscription.

Ein karolingischer Denar Karls des Großen mit auf der Rückseite den Namen seiner Gemahlin, Königin Fastrada. A rather scathing review of a book whose title suggests it discusses how Frankish rulers used the iconography of coins and seals to convey a political message, but which fails to live up to that expectation. With regard to coinage, the author regrettably restricts his study to named portrait coins, of which there are few in this period, and unfortunately displays an inadequate and flawed knowledge and understanding of Frankish coinage.

The objective of the article is to present the results of research on the possibility of using selected archaeological sites for tourism purposes in order to expand the tourist offer of the Barycz Valley region. The analysis was conducted only for the section of the river running within the borders of the Lower Silesian Voivodeship because tourism development is linked to local government institutions and the structures of available information. The work was carried out using secondary and primary data. Using the research desk method, sources from the field of archaeology (including publications of excavation results) and tourism geography (including analyses of tourism development strategies) were used, and then field research was conducted to supplement the previously obtained information. As a result of the work, several dozen sites were analyzed and finally 11 of them were selected, based on which a proposal to create an archaeological trail along the existing kayak route on the Barycz River was presented.

Abbey of ‘Carryke’, founded almost 900 years ago. Surprisingly, in this land of
saints and scholars, much of its history remains a mystery.

Das vorliegende Dokument ist eine deutsche Übersetzung und Analyse einer historischen Urkunde vom 31. Dezember 1261, die einen Vertrag zwischen dem Templerorden und den Markgrafen von Brandenburg dokumentiert. Diese Urkunde, ursprünglich in lateinischer Sprache verfasst, befindet sich im Codex diplomaticus Brandenburgensis und wurde von Adolph Friedrich Johann Riedel 1843 veröffentlicht.
Die Übersetzung ermöglicht einen Einblick in die territorialen Besitztümer und feudalen Strukturen des Templerordens in den östlichen Grenzgebieten des mittelalterlichen Deutschlands und dokumentiert den bemerkenswerten Einfluss des Ordens weit jenseits des Heiligen Landes. Der Vertrag bezeugt die komplexen Beziehungen zwischen weltlichen Herrschern und dem Militärorden sowie die bedeutende wirtschaftliche und politische Macht, die der Templerorden im 13. Jahrhundert in der Region zwischen der germanischen und slawischen Welt ausübte.
Diese Studie trägt zur Erweiterung unseres Wissens über die Rolle der Templer bei der Ostsiedlung bei und beleuchtet einen oft übersehenen Aspekt der Templergeschichte: ihre Funktion als Feudalherren in den Grenzgebieten Europas.

Despite recent considerable gains, our knowledge of cancer in antiquity is still limited. This paper discusses an adult individual from a Dutch medieval hospital site who demonstrates osteoblastic and osteolytic lesions on the ribs, scapula, clavicle, and vertebrae. The morphology, radiographic appearance, and distribution of the skeletal lesions suggest that this individual was affected by metastatic carcinoma. This case increases the number of publications that present an osteoblastic and osteolytic response to cancer and contributes to the body of evidence for archaeological neoplastic disease. For the Netherlands, this individual presents the first published case of probable metastatic carcinoma with mixed skeletal lesions.

This report outlines the results of an archaeological test pit evaluation at St Peter’s Church, Wintringham,
North Yorkshire. This Grade I-listed Anglican church is now closed and is cared for by the Churches
Conservation Trust.
Three test pits were hand excavated to determine the characteristics of the chancel foundations and to
establish the function of a ground pipe.
The excavation uncovered foundations characteristic of medieval churches, consisting of limestone
rubble within the foundation trench. The foundation walls are capped with a sandstone ashlar plinth
course. Near the eastern side of the chancel, human remains were found at a depth ranging from 0.20
meters to 0.70 meters below ground level.
Groundworks near the eastern elevation are likely to affect intact burials at deeper levels and
redeposited, disarticulated remains at shallower levels.

L’aixada perduda del Turó dels Dos Pins (Cabrera de Mar, Maresme) continua motivant nous estudis sobre l’arqueofurtivisme. Han transcorregut dos anys d’ençà que el protocol que va rebre el seu nom es va publicar al Felibrejada i l’experiència obliga a la seva actualització alhora que posa de manifest mancances pel que fa a la investigació acadèmica.
El protocol Aixada ens permet identificar i recol·lectar els indicis físics d’una activitat arqueofurtiva en el lloc dels fets. És un instrument imprescindible, però cal anar més enllà. Ens fa falta aprofundir en l’anàlisi d’aquests indicis, per la qual cosa hem cregut necessari elaborar un procediment similar al realitzat amb el Mètode Rocafort sobre els indicis conductuals i psicològics -també publicat al Felibrejada-.
En el present article es dona a conèixer aquest nou Mètode Aixada, com a procediment específic per a l’estudi acadèmic i interpretació dels indicis criminalístics físics d’una activitat arqueofurtiva terrestre. Es proposen i descriuen unes pautes a seguir en tots i cadascun dels indicis. Tanmateix, es revisa el protocol Aixada i el mètode Rocafort, a fi d’aconseguir la millor coordinació possible entre els tres, evitant duplicitats i mancances.
L’objectiu de tot plegat és continuar avançant en el coneixement de l’arqueofurtivisme, alhora que contribuir en l’eficàcia de la lluita contra el mateix.

En este congreso interdisciplinar se presentarán los resultados del proyecto de investigación I+D+i homónimo (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación: PID2019-105189GB-I00) que, en sintonía con el actual debate vigente sobre el proceso de conquista y analizando las escasas fuentes coetáneas, partió de la hipótesis de que el modelo de conquista del territorio en al-Andalus, mediante armas o pacto, conllevaba un asentamiento diferenciado de población, que quedaría reflejado en un registro numismático de cada territorio. El estudio de los feluses y precintos permite plantear teorías al respecto, interpretar la moneda en contexto arqueológico y esclarecer tanto el proceso de conquista a partir del registro numismático localizado en cada territorio, como el uso no canónico de la misma. Así, se abordará el panorama de conquista desde sus momentos previos, las tradicionales fuentes escritas, la arqueología, la sigilografía y la numismática y se presentarán novedosos métodos de enseñanza, documentación, difusión y transmisión de este sugerente proceso histórico.

Experimento baseado no artigo; "A Síndone de Turim: Ensaio de tradução ‘grego-língua portuguesa (Brasil) – inglês’ para João 20, 5-8 e o experimento do manequim inflável."

Foi utilizado o Modelo: 1028 - cor prata em PVC. Altura 168 cm - Largura dos ombros 54 cm - Peito 95 cm - Cintura circunferência - 75 cm - Circunferência do quadril: 90 cm

O manequim tem dois pontos para inflar: o da cabeça (que é separado do resto do corpo) e um ponto na cintura esquerda que infla o restante
Com a intenção de desinflar simultaneamente as duas partes, foi utilizado um aspirador de pó de 1600W no bico do corpo e um aspirador de 130W na cabeça.

O procedimento consistiu em ligar primeiramente o aspirador do corpo e aproximadamente após 30 segundos ligar o aspirador da cabeça, (quando o tronco começa a baixar) obtendo o resultado do vídeo que demonstra a simulação antes de embrulhar o modelo
A seguir, o modelo foi embrulhado e repetido o procedimento.

Experiment based on the article: "The Turin Shroud: A ‘greek-Portuguese (Brazil)-English’ translation essay for John 20:5-8 and the inflatable mannequin experiment."

Model used: 1028 - silver color in PVC. Height 168 cm - Shoulder width 54 cm - Chest 95 cm - Waist circumference - 75 cm - Hip circumference: 90 cm

The mannequin has two points for inflation: the head (which is separate from the rest of the body) and a point on the left waist that inflates the rest.

With the intention of simultaneously deflating both parts, a 1600W vacuum cleaner was used on the body nozzle and a 130W vacuum cleaner on the head.

The procedure consisted of first turning on the body vacuum cleaner and approximately after 30 seconds turning on the head vacuum cleaner (when the trunk starts to lower), obtaining the result in the video that demonstrates the simulation before wrapping the model.

The model was then wrapped and the procedure repeated.

El estudio multidisciplinar de la Dehesa de Navalvillar ha revelado importantes hallazgos que arrojan luz sobre la construcción y organización de este poblado rural. A través del análisis de la fotografía aérea, se ha podido identificar la presencia de numerosos edificios, lo que sugiere la existencia de una compleja estructura social y económica en la aldea. La denominación de “Poblado Minero” se ha establecido en base a sus características únicas, como la extracción de minerales y la producción metalúrgica especializada. La presencia de talleres de vidrio y la distribución de productos importados desde centros urbanos indican una red de intercambio comercial activa en la región. La identificación de actividades artesanales y la presencia de artefactos que indican la islamización sugieren una diversidad de actividades y una influencia cultural variada en el poblado. El descubrimiento de un recinto con una puerta de entrada en la zona norte, así como la presencia de armas y la elaboración de plomo, plantean interrogantes sobre el papel de la élite en el control y organización del poblado. La circulación de monedas fragmentadas y la continuidad de la ocupación hasta el siglo IX revelan una compleja dinámica económica y social en la Dehesa de Navalvillar. Estos hallazgos apuntan a la existencia de una jerarquización interna en el poblado, con evidencias de un posible control directo de la élite sobre la producción de la explotación minero-metalúrgica. La falta de fuentes escritas sobre las minerías Tardoantiguas y Altomedievales destaca la importancia de la arqueología para comprender la economía y la organización social en este tipo de asentamientos. El análisis de la Dehesa de Navalvillar brinda importantes vestigios para esclarecer la cotidianidad y las labores desarrolladas en esta localidad rural, suscitando interrogantes y retos de relevancia para futuras investigaciones dentro del ámbito de la arqueología altomedieval.

La arquitectura doméstica ha sido uno de los principales registros arqueológicos que han fundamentado un análisis detallado de las sociedades campesinas altomedievales en el centro y norte peninsular en las últimas décadas. Sin embargo, la falta de una masa empírica de calidad y las carencias metodológicas y teóricas en el abordaje de las unidades domésticas en tanto sujetos de estudio coherentes han lastrado la capacidad de este registro de tratar cuestiones como las diferencias regionales o el papel activo de la arquitectura doméstica en la conformación de las comunidades campesinas del período. Con todo, en las últimas décadas, y gracias al desarrollo de la arqueología comercial y de diversos proyectos de investigación en torno a la arqueología del campesinado altomedieval en el centro y norte peninsular, se han podido excavar decenas de contextos que están permitiendo reelaborar los discursos sobre este sujeto histórico a través de sus formas constructivas y la organización del espacio habitado, tradicionalmente visto desde el punto de vista de la simplicidad y de la pasividad. En este trabajo se presenta un análisis detallado de las arquitecturas y unidades domésticas de cinco yacimientos altomedievales de dos regiones del centro peninsular con el objetivo de abordar la construcción de las comunidades campesinas altomedievales en tanto que comunidades políticas. De esta manera, se pretende contrarrestar la falsa idea de la simplicidad de estas comunidades, así como reivindicar el análisis de la arquitectura doméstica como un registro material con amplias posibilidades de ser explorado con detalle en el futuro.
