This essay examines the French Revolution through the lens of revisionist historiography, arguing against the Marxist interpretation that frames the event primarily as a social revolution and a class struggle. While Marxist scholars view the revolution as a bourgeois class uprising marking capitalism's rise, revisionist historians emphasize the political nature of the Revolution, highlighting the influence of ideological shifts, individual agency, and contingent events. This essay will demonstrate through analysis of critical events, for example, the transition of the Estates-General into the National Assembly and the political philosophy in the Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizen, personal choices together with political crises determined revolutionary developments. The argument contends a more detailed understanding of the Revolution requires recognizing the complexity of motivations beyond economic factors, ultimately providing a richer interpretation of its causes and enduring legacy in shaping modern democratic ideals.

In 1582-83, Alessandro Valignano, S.J., Visitor of the Jesuit missions in Japan, authored the Advertimentos e avisos, a behavioral manual instructing missionaries on adopting Japanese customs to gain credibility and facilitate conversions. His approach, emphasizing etiquette, hygiene, and social rank, clashed with Father General Claudio Acquaviva's concerns about cultural accommodation. This study examines Advertimentos as both a practical guide and an educational text, drawing from European humanist traditions and Jesuit training manuals. It highlights Valignano's strategic use of adaptation in missionary education and explores how his pedagogical model influenced Jesuit engagement in Japan and broader global missions.

A lo largo de la Baja Edad Media, cada Príncipe estableció su estilo de servicio o Casa y, aunque se buscó la originalidad que diera forma e independencia a su entidad soberana, todos siguieron pautas comunes. En general, las Casas de los Soberanos europeos tuvieron las mismas secciones –capilla, cámara, oficios, caballeriza, caza y guardas–, conforme a las distintas actividades del ejercicio del poder. Los Soberanos se sirvieron de estas divisiones para situar a los miembros de las élites sociales de sus territorios y mantener integradas sus posesiones. Hasta hace pocas fechas, el estudio de las Casas de los monarcas modernos europeos había permanecido en un olvido sólo quebrado, en ocasiones, por algunos trabajos de evidente sesgo institucionalista. Con el auge de los estudios sobre la Corte que actualmente se están llevando a cabo, se está procediendo a situar las Casas Reales y sus miembros en el nuclear papel que tuvieron durante la configuración de las monarquías de los siglos XV-XVIII.
Sin duda, las guardas reales resultaron fundamentales en éste proceso pues, a través de la observación y estudio de las mismas cómo sección de la Casa, podemos comprobar cómo se fue modificando la propia estructura de la Monarquía Hispana. El presente libro estudia en profundidad éste proceso, así cómo la extracción social de los guardas a lo largo de esos dos siglos -para lo cual se apoya en las biografías de los más de 5.000 que compusieron las unidades durante los reinados Austrias-, la especial jurisdicción de las mismas y su papel en la Etiqueta. Finalmente, se incluye un estudio bibliográfico sobre las principales guardas existentes desde la Antigüedad, así cómo de las unidades de guarda de otras potencias de la Edad Moderna.

In the last twenty years, much research into methods of late medieval governance has grown out of the investigation of the large-scale inquests conducted by rulers that first appeared in southern Latin Christendom in the 13th and 14th centuries.1 This was precisely the same period that saw the invention of inquisition into heretical depravity (inquisitio heretice pravitatis), perhaps the most infamous of medieval “inquests”. Strangely, no systemic analysis has been done on the correlations between secular inquest and inquisition in this nascent moment in administration, neither as a mode of authority nor as formal diplomatics. One reason for this has been the absence of extant sources from the earliest inquisitions. A recent edition of the registry of the largest known medieval inquisition – at Toulouse, 1245-46, 5400+ deponents – allows multiple reflections on the concurrences, overlaps, and shared features. This context in particular presents a fascinating opportunity for a comparative, materialist diplomatic analysis: this inquisition registry exists as a copy made in the 1250s for the judges in a Capetian secular inquest; the records of those same Capetian inquests have come down in their original (paper) form; the Capetian rulers appear to have played a role in the origins of the heresy inquisition itself. All of this triggers a series of questions not only about how the secular and religious court records might share diplomatic characteristics, but how those diplomatics channeled the competing ambitions of the Capetian and Papal powers in the French Midi after the Albigensian Crusades.

Il n'est pas rare, lorsque l'on étudie l'histoire de la Réforme protestante, de trouver des objets du quotidien qui comportent un aspect symbolique et une emblématique très précise et insistant sur des motifs religieux faisant sens pour ce culte ! C'est ce que j'ai pu découvrir en parcourant les collections d 'histoire locale de Cesky-Krumlov, qui se trouve à deux pas du château féodal remanié à la Renaissance sur le fief de PETR VOK ROSENBERG. Il faut savoir que cette famille fut toujours la garante d'une protection pour les minorités religieuses, qu'elles soient protestantes, calvinistes refugiées en Bohème à la suite des Guerres de Religion Françaises, ou issues du schisme religieux associé aux hussites ou aux Frères Moraves ! Or ce bois-gravé reproduit, pour qui a étudié le mouvement protestant français du xvii-ème siècle, l'emblématique des méreaux de messe distribués pour la Cène huguenote et Calviniste en France… En effet à partir de 1586, Jean Calvin préconise que soient utilisés de tels méreaux afin de pouvoir les distribuer aux personnes qui étaient régulière de la messe et d'ainsi procéder a une sorte d'appel et de procédure de contrôle des participants réguliers par comptage et distribution (appelés ''token'' dans les pays anglo-saxons et gardés dans les Loges Franc-maçonnique après etc…) ''tickets'' servant au recensement rapide (par distribution) des participants à

The Thirty Years War (1618-1648) was a major turning point in European history, notable not only for its religious and political conflicts but also for the logistical challenges of sustaining large-scale warfare. The sheer size of the armies and the devastation of the war-torn landscape forced belligerents to move beyond traditional methods of provisioning, such as living off the land (bellum se ipsum alet) and exploitative contribution systems, towards logistical innovation. This led to important developments, including reforms by leaders like Gustavus Adolphus and the early use of magazine/depot supply systems, which ultimately laid the groundwork for more centralized and state-controlled logistical systems in the post-war era.

Dr. James Donald Tracy in his work Europe's Reformations, 1450-1650: Doctrine, Politics, and Community first published in 1999 and then in 2006 with a second edition has produced a comprehensive seminal synthesis on the topical material of the religious upheavals that reshaped and molded early modern Europe. 1 Dr. Tracy is a distinguished American historian of the early modern period, who along with Heiko Oberman (Dutch historian and theologian), co-founded the Journal of Early Modern History. Dr. Tracy is also the Emeritus Professor at the University of Minnesota. This work by Dr. Tracy adds to the historiography of the Reformation and early modern European history a comprehensive and accessible exploration of the various Reformations (Protestant, Catholic, and otherwise) over a period of two centuries. This work is designed for the audience of both academics, scholars, and students by dismantling the traditional periodization and positing a break between the medieval and early modern eras instead of overly emphasizing the continuities and complex interplays of doctrine, politics, and social dynamics. This work by Dr. Tracy diverges from the work of other historians in this specific field like historians Diarmaid MacCulloch, Peter Marshall, Natalie Zemon Davis, Brad S. Gregory, and others. The divergence here is in the approach to the Reformation as a complex and multifaceted series of events versus a singular event. Dr. Tracy poses the central argument as being that the Reformation was not a single unified movement but was instead a series of varied but distinct Reformations occurring across the European continent from 1450 through 1650. The contention made in this argument is that the Reformation was actually shaped and molded by an interplay of theological, social, and political factors and/or variables that shifted significantly from region to region. 2 Dr. Tracy further makes the point that "the Reformation was a process, not an event" and points out that its impact had different effects in different regions of Europe. 3 The approach by Dr. Tracy is distinctly divergent from that of Diarmaid MacCulloch and his work The Reformation: A History where Dr. MacCulloch argues that the Reformation was a single, cohesive, and unified

Women and marital conflict through the church discourse, between the baroque and the illustration ROSA MARÍA ALABRÚS IGLESIAS** Recibido: 28-12-2020 Aceptado: 27-04-2023 El artículo analiza la trayectoria del discurso eclesiástico sobre las mujeres, con especial atención al conflicto conyugal en España desde el Concilio de Trento hasta finales del siglo XVIII. Se recorren las diversas actitudes de los escritores eclesiásticos del Barroco a la Ilustración enfatizando a los tratadistas catalanes, poco conocidos, en sus diagnósticos sobre la problemática de la mujer casada, el maltrato doméstico y las distintas alternativas o soluciones a la ruptura matrimonial. Se examina la evolución de las valoraciones de la problemática familiar: las primeras tomas de posición erasmistas ante la situación conyugal de Enrique VIII, las disposiciones canónicas del Concilio de Trento que otorgan condición sacramental al matrimonio con su legado doctrinal, las distintas expresiones de la misoginia barroca y las primeras reivindicaciones de los derechos femeninos a comienzos del siglo XVIII, con las reacciones subsiguientes que vuelven a inculpar a la mujer como principal responsable del fracaso conyugal. El discurso eclesiástico catalán no plantea grandes variantes en relación al conjunto de la Monarquía hispánica.

У даній статті досліджується біографія та діяльність Григорія Гамалії, однієї з найвизначніших постатей Гетьманщини XVII століття. Стаття ґрунтується на шести ключових критеріях: соціальне походження, освіта і кар'єра перед вступом на посаду, особливості управління, подальша кар'єра після служби, родинні зв'язки та спадкоємці, а також багатство і благодійність, що дозволяє всебічно охарактеризувати його особистість та вплив на тогочасне суспільство. Походячи з шляхетського роду, Гамалія отримав належну освіту, яка стала основою для його успішної кар'єри в адміністративній та військовій сферах. Його дипломатичні та військові здібності забезпечили йому значний вплив і довіру гетьманів. На посаді лубенського полковника він проявив себе як рішучий і талановитий керівник, особливо під час боротьби з Павлом Тетерею, а також менш успішно, але все ще помітно у боротьбі з Московією. Незважаючи на складнощі та політичні інтриги, він завжди зумів знайти спосіб утриматися на політичній арені протягом довгих років. Стаття також розкриває особисте життя Гамалії, яке було позначене трагедією бездітності. Відсутність спадкоємців означала, що його великий статок і накопичені знання не могли бути передані наступним поколінням. Гамалія був людиною складною і неоднозначною: його здатність пристосовуватися до обставин іноді вимагала зраджувати союзників і змінювати сторони, що негативно впливало на долю Гетьманщини. Втім, його вплив на політичне життя України був значним, і він залишив по собі спадок, відзначений не лише військовими і політичними досягненнями, але й значною благодійною діяльністю. Актуальність теми полягає у висвітленні важливих сторінок історії Гетьманщини через призму життя і діяльності Григорія Гамалії, що дає можливість зрозуміти внутрішньополітичні реалії того часу, включаючи складні стосунки між місцевою старшиною та центральною владою. Ця стаття сприяє кращому розумінню епохи та ролі окремих особистостей у формуванні політичного і соціального ландшафту України XVII століття.

Son varios los artículos que hemos ido dedicando a diferentes familias de esta ciudad conquense a lo largo de estos años en los libros de fiestas de San Juan Evangelista. Siendo este uno más, que como otros muchos que vendrán, reflejan el amplio legado histórico que nos ofrece Huete. Es por ello que en esta ocasión nos gustaría poner el foco en un linaje, sobre el que hasta la fecha hemos efectuado algunos apuntes, bastante someros, y motivo por ello más que justificado, para ahondar en detalles de su pasado. Sobre el origen de la familia Cabildo, carecemos de datos que nos confirmen una fecha precisa de su existencia en este lugar. Amor Calzas (1904, 101) ya nos habla de Fray Pedro Cabildo, mercedario que nacería a principios del siglo XVI. El autor comenta que en el siglo XVIII, este apellido todavía estaba extendido entre algunos optenses que vivían en el barrio de San Gil. En el caso de Pedro Cabildo, indica que "profesó en 1532, pasando como Misionero á las Inidias, y ocupándose con gran celo de la predicación (...) volvió a España, y ási Convento de Huete, de donde fué nombrado Vicario, muriendo en 1570" (Amor, 1904, 101-102). Así pues, desprendemos por esta referencia, que la familia Cabildo, como mínimo, ya pudo estar presente desde finales del medievo en la localidad, desconociéndose por ahora el origen genealógico del linaje. Por otro lado, en la obra de Manuel de Parada, se comenta sobre este mismo Pedro Cabildo, que fue "hijo o pariente cercanísimo de uno de los primeros comuneros que se alzaron en Huete contra el Emperador" (Parada, 2019, 556).

The article “Military banners of the Court Troops and King John Casimir Vasa's Guard from the Collection of the Armemuseum in Stockholm” presents a collection of military banners belonging to the court troops and the royal guard of King John Casimir Vasa, held in the State Trophy Collection at the Armemuseum in Stockholm. The author examines the significance of military banners in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth during the first half of the 17th century, highlighting the lack of formal legal regulations concerning their design. This absence led to the development of customary practices, shaped by two vexillological traditions—national and foreign.

The article briefly outlines the history of the court formations and royal guard during the reign of John Casimir and provides an overview of the State Trophy Collection’s origins, as well as the existing scholarship on royal banners. The author then analyzes a set of 17 banners, categorizing them into three groups: banners of the court troops, banners of the royal guard, and unidentified banners likely associated with units closely tied to the royal court. Each banner is examined in terms of its condition, provenance, and the royal heraldry, Baroque emblems, and mottoes it bears. Possible sources of inspiration for their visual forms are also discussed. For the previously unidentified banners, the author attempts to determine their potential military affiliations.

In conclusion, the article compares this collection with the banners of court and guard troops under earlier monarchs of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth—Sigismund III and Władysław IV Vasa—emphasizing the dynastic and political contexts that influenced changes in banner iconography during their respective reigns.

In 1445, John II of Castile awarded a sizeable estate southwest of Toledo to Gutierre de Sotomayor, a favored noble supporter. The land and its jurisdiction, however, were not taken from royal lands or following due process; rather, they belonged to the city of Toledo as a result of purchase from an earlier monarch. The city's council consequently protested the grant and initiated a lawsuit for the return of its property. At stake was an issue central to the nature of kingship in Castile -the monarch's use of "absolute royal authority." J. B. Owens examines Toledo's lawsuit, known to contemporaries as the "Belalcázar lawsuit," from its inception to its conclusion during the reign of Philip II, more than 120 years later. He treats the case as a microhistory that illuminates judicial procedure at the highest levels in Castile while revealing the tension between competing visions of "justice," the universally acknowledged fundamental attribute of kingship within the monarch's realms. He argues that the monarch was most effective in employing the language of "absolute royal authority" as justification for an action when the action coincided with widely accepted norms consistent with the provisions of written law. While reviewing many episodes in Castilian history for their effects on monarchs' behavior -for example, the comunero revolt in 1520 -21 -he also uses the long duration of the suit to argue against a putative era of "early modern state-building." In addition, he disputes the centrality of clientage as a means for monarchs to control their realms. Clientage, he observes, represented weakness rather than strength and, when coupled with a perceived disregard of due process and justice, damaged the monarch's influence. Owens skillfully traces the Belalcázar suit through a judicial process that moved in fits and starts depending on the protagonists' reading of political conditions. Among other things, marriage, death, family ties, and formal and informal positions at court affected the timing of initiatives related to the suit or decisions to stall the proceedings. At root, however, remained the core issue -was the monarch's use of "absolute royal authority" to reward a favorite with land owned by another party "just," or did it represent corruption in government and thus injustice? After years of effort, ultimately Toledo lost the case. Despite a favorable verdict by the Chancillería of Granada, the Council of Castile in 1568 reversed the decision and banned further appeal. To stunned city councilors, the verdict demonstrated the effectiveness of the defendant's aristocratic connections at court. It also strengthened fears about the monarch's reliability in living up to his promises in general. Thus, Philip II's use of his absolute royal authority had the paradoxical effect of weakening his leadership and reducing his ability to secure support for the fiscal resources needed to sustain policies at home and especially beyond Castile during "the first global age." The long chronological sweep of this work enables the author to trace both the shifting participants and the changing broader contexts at court and elsewhere in Cas-

In March 1585, the creation of the noble branch of the Catholic League and the Guise call to arms were prepared so secretly that Henri III was taken unawares. This might seem surprising to historians. After all, the Guise family had played a central role in French political life since the start of the Wars of Religion and their political ambitions were regularly denounced by their opponents. Ever present in the interpretations of the events highlighted by historians who have been influenced by the political rhetoric of the time, the Guise did not, however, represent the main threat in the eyes of the government authorities in March 1585. Rather than a secretive, transnational uprising led by the Guise, this article argues that the monarchy primarily feared a traditional noble revolt led by the duc de Montmorency, governor of Languedoc, which explains the surprise of the king at the start of this Catholic League and his unreadiness to face this threat.

Né aux Pays-Bas, héritier de la couronne d'Espagne puis du Saint Empire romain germanique, souverain d’un immense empire « où le soleil ne se couchait jamais », se rêvant garant d’un Empire universel chrétien, Charles Quint (1500-1558) apparaît comme porteur d’une puissance prodigieuse qu’il conjugue à des aspirations tout aussi démesurées. 
Son règne témoigne d’un important projet d’unification rationnelle des territoires dans un contexte de grandes tension politiques et religieuses et de conflits militaires. Sa lutte homérique contre François Ier pour l’hégémonie européenne lui fait porter son regard également vers les terres italiennes, qui constituent un enjeu de premier plan pour des raisons aussi bien stratégiques et politiques que symboliques. Une entreprise monumentale, pourtant jamais pleinement réalisée car sans cesse entravée par les rivalités de pouvoir et par les conflits religieux qui minent l’unité du monde chrétien. Charles Quint, constamment contraint de reporter ses plus hautes ambitions, les emporte avec lui dans sa dernière demeure, au monastère de Yuste, marquant une dernière fois l’Histoire en abdiquant de sa propre volonté.
Cette étude, fruit de plusieurs années de recherches redonne sa juste place au « phénomène européen » qu’incarne ce dernier César.

This essay explores the symptomatic absence of the German Peasants' War (1525)-the largest popular uprising in Europe before the French Revolution-from classical political thought. It begins with Leo Strauss's and Sheldon Wolin's appraisals of what united the body of literature, namely, that the role of the political theorist is to articulate and advocate visions of order. The abundant archive of peasant demands, sermons, ordinances, territorial constitutions, and prophecies were inscrutable to the order-oriented assumptions of traditional political philosophy. First, because the theory produced in the struggle was not separate from insurgent action. The uprising was led, articulated, and theorized by those who were dismissed as fanatics rather than engaged by authorities and by political thinkers like Sir Thomas More. The essential unit of organization and voice of the Peasants' War was collective-no singular author appears to reflect on the conjuncture from a detached vantage. The political aims of this period were at once theological, existential, and economic. These aims were expressed through a "political theology of ingression" whose key gesture was to bridge separations. Peasants sought to literalize metaphor and to discern the literal as already allegorical: the material condition of serfdom was simultaneously a form of spiritual bondage; biblical images of divine common life could be actualized by sharing life, land, and goods on earth.

At the turn of the 16th century, the seemingly unstoppable Ottoman islamic expansion was terrorizing Europeans especially in the Holy Roman Empire. Using only artistic pieces, this article explains how this threat was perceived and what were the different reactions in Europe.

A partir de ellas, se ha avanzado mucho en el conocimiento de la historia forestal, sobre todo, en lo referido a su estrecha relación con la de la Real Armada española. Sin ir más lejos, se han incorporado nuevas perspectivas al debate historiográfico, destacando en este sentido las aportaciones procedentes de la geografía histórica y la historia jurídica, sobre todo, después de que la ecología histórica iniciase las discusiones más interesantes, en las décadas de 1980. En el propio marco de la disciplina histórica, los historiadores han hecho a su vez aportaciones importantes al tema estos últimos decenios, en particular, desde el ámbito de la historia naval, al profundizar en la relación de los recursos forestales con la industria naval y los arsenales. Uno de esos recientes esfuerzos ha sido protagonizado por el proyecto ForSeaDiscovery, cuyos resultados han pretendido, gracias al diálogo establecido entre disciplinas como la arqueología, la dendrocronología y la historia, mostrar cuál fue en la Península Ibérica el impacto que la presión de las actividades humanas ejercieron sobre los bosques, cómo éstos fueron utilizados por administraciones y políticas de estado que no tenían en cuenta criterios ambientales 1 . En su origen, los estudios históricos en torno al bosque procedieron a analizar, sin más, la legislación existente, si bien, recientemente, los investigadores han tratado de averiguar cuál habría sido la eficacia de la aplicación de esa legislación, a través del manejo sistemático de documentación judicial y administrativa. Así, se ha puesto de manifiesto que la legislación forestal promovida y aplicada por la Monarquía Hispánica tuvo un desigual éxito: las ordenanzas establecidas en tiempos de los Austrias parece que fueron eficaces en cuanto a la preservación y gestión del monte, al menos en lo que al Cantábrico se refiere, al permitir que en el siglo XVIII existiese allí una riqueza forestal envidiable para el resto de las potencias europeas. Por el contrario, la Real Ordenanza de 1748 fue un fracaso absoluto, pues únicamente estuvo en vigor durante el mandato de su promotor, el Marqués de la Ensenada. Al respecto, la historia jurídica ha abierto una línea de investigación sobre el origen de dicha ordenanza que ha dado sorpresas: si tradicionalmente se pensaba que la Ordenanza francesa de Aguas y Bosques establecida en 1669 por Colbert había sido la fuente esencial de inspiración de la ordenanza de 1748, idea repetida una y otra vez de manera acrítica por la historiografía especializada, hoy es puesta en cuestión. GODZSÁK Attila A Szent Jobb Sátoraljaújhelyben, 1939 A Szent Jobb, Szent István király jobbkeze az egyik legjelentősebb szakrális ereklye Magyarországon. Az uralkodó halála után trónviszályos, zűrzavaros idők következtek, ezért a fehérvári káptalan, féltve a bebalzsamozott és mumifikálódott holttestet a megszentségtelenítéstől, kiemelte a bazilika közepén álló márványszarkofágból és az épségben megmaradt jobb kezet leválasztották róla. Ez után az ereklye eltűnt, később Szent László király uralkodásának idején került elő. Ekkortól kezdődött nyilvános tisztelete és ünnepe. Az Aranybulla pedig törvénybe iktatta tiszteletét. A 16. században a Balkánon őrizték a Domonkos rendi szerzetesek. A Jobbot Mária Terézia szerezte vissza, Budára vitette és elrendelte augusztus 20-ának, mint Szent István király napjának megünneplését. Az 1900-as évek elején a budavári palota Zsigmondkápolnájába került, ahol 1944-ig volt látható. 1938 kettős szentév volt a magyarság számára. Hazánkban rendezték meg a XXXIV. Eucharisztikus Világkongresszust és Szent István emlékévet tartottak az uralkodó halálának 900. évfordulója alkalmából. A két rendezvény hivatalosan nem, de a gyakorlatban mégis összefonódott. Már 1937-ben elhatározták, hogy országjárásra viszik a Szent Jobbot, s közvetlenül a világkongresszus befejezte után el is indult az ereklye, hogy körbeutazza az országot. A Szent István ünnepi év nyitányának május 30-át választották, amely a Szent Jobb megtalálásának évfordulója volt. 1 A Szent Jobbot ezután indították el az ország különböző pontjaira. Első útját május 31-én Esztergomban tette és július 4-én Nyíregyháza, Miskolc, Eger, Gyöngyös és Hatvan városokat érintve ment utolsó körútjára. 2 Az eredeti tervek szerint ekkor Sátoraljaújhelybe is elhozták volna, de végül ez nem valósult meg. A Szent Jobbot vivő ún. "Aranyvonat" szerelvényét Urbányi Vilmos és Márton Lajos tervei szerint építették át egy szalonkocsiból. A mozdony után három vagon következett, elöl és hátul egy-egy luxus személykocsi, amelyekben a koronaőrség pihenőben levő állománya, illetve a kíséret egyházi, valamint világi tagjai tartózkodtak. Középütt kapott helyet a speciálisan kiképzett vagon, az "aranykocsi", amelynek kétoldalt nagy felületen üvegfalai voltak, hogy az ereklyét ott is jól láthassák, ahol azt nem emelték le a vonatról, hanem csak áthaladt a szerelvény. A szerelvény külső falán, mindkét oldalán az 1038-1938 évszámok hirdették a szent király jubileumát.

Батурин розташований на лівому березі прекрасної річки Сейм -одній з найбільших приток Десни. Зі старих описів знаємо, що річка була повноводною, широкою, глибокою та була важливим торговим шляхом. Та вже у XVII-XVIII ст. русло річки міліє. Заплава Сейму біля Батурина, завширшки в 1 км, мала багато проток, рукавів, стариць та підвищені ділянки, що не затоплювалися весняними повенями і утворювали острови, через які можна було переправлятися з одного берега на інший. Ці природні особливості ускладнювали зв'язок з правим берегом, проте й слугували природним захистом від нападів з боку річки. В усі часи важливу соціальну та сільсько-господарську роль відігравали переправи-перевози через норовливий Сейм, швидкість течії якого немалавід 0,3-0,4 м/с і до 0,7 м/с на перекатах. Один з таких перевозів знаходився нижче від Батурина, називався Обмачівським й існував ще до заснування міста. Після 1625 року з'являється Батуринський перевіз, що розташовувався ближче до міста. Його роль особливо зросла тоді, коли Батурин став гетьманською резиденцією і в ньому з'явилася поштова станція. Це були броди, човнові, поромні переправи, санні дороги взимку. Через активну діяльність потоку переправи на Сеймі час від часу змінювали своє місцезнаходження. Маємо свідчення, що у XVIIІ ст. Батуринським перевозом володів Батуринський (Кербутівський) жіночий монастир. Пристань перевозу знаходилася (у 1767 році) «під самим старим пустим містом». Після ліквідації цієї обителі Батуринський перевіз відійшов до Миколо-Крупицького чоловічого монастиря. Опис Батуринської переправи зустрічаємо у подорожньому щоденнику латиноамериканського політичного та військового діяча Франсіско де Міранди, який подорожував Чернігово-Сіверщиною у 1787 р.: «О четвертій ранку встав, випив кави з молоком і пішки дійшов до річки, яка протікає внизу, під горою; вона називається Сейм, і, якщо не помиляюся, це друга за величиною ріка тутешнього краю після Дніпра. Однак, в Америці її вважали б струмочком. Човна довелося чекати цілу годину; тут їх два, але переправа дуже погано налагоджена». Чиновник особливих доручень М. Калиновський рапортував у 1845 р. про «…величайший беспорядок на плотине через р. Сейм близ Батурина, на которой устроены мосты, не имеющие ни на одну сторону перил. На этих мостах изгнившие доски провалились и образовали в нескольких местах огромные дыры…». 1867 р. Батуринське волосне правління подало клопотання до Конотопської повітової управи про виділення коштів на ремонт мостів у Батурині.

As the titles suggest, the essays cover a wide range of topics and figures, from Plato to Feyerabend, via Polybius and Machiavelli and Goya, Lucretius, and Pomponazzi. It is a tour de force, like many of Ginzburg's collections: intriguing, challenging, splendidly written -almost impossible to review. Ginzburg continuously pushes his readers beyond their comfort zones, sometimes even off balance, as his arguments take unexpected turns across centuries, traditions, and media. This is a lucid, crisp booklet. The editor describes it as « scintillating », and this is no marketing boast. The overarching theme of the collection is never explicitly stated. Like the panther of medieval bestiaries, it is sensed everywhere yet never directly seen. With no introduction to guide them, readers must rely on their wits. Ginzburg, prolific as he is, must have had specific reasons for republishing The Soul of Brutes after almost twenty years and making it the title piece of the collection. Indeed, though diverse, the four essays engage in a subtle yet profound dialogue, prompting readers to rethink their nature as cultural animals organized in political communities -a reflection that passes through history. This proves true for the collection itself. The book was published in celebration of the fortieth anniversary of Seagull Books and its founder, as reflected in Ginzburg's dedication: « These essays, in their diversity, are a small homage to my friend Naveen Kishore: to his inventiveness, his energy, his courage ». The Inquisition, a formidable institution designed to enforce Catholic orthodoxy and maintain social control across the Spanish Empire, extended its reach into the Americas shortly after colonization began. Historiography has traditionally focused on the Holy Office’s tribunals in major colonial centers such as Mexico City, Lima, and Cartagena de Indias, where the institution exercised centralized and often brutal authority. However, recent scholarship has begun to illuminate the more peripheral and decentralized expressions of inquisitorial power, particularly in understudied regions like the Río de la Plata—comprising present-day Argentina and Uruguay.
This study aims to build upon this emerging body of work by examining the Inquisition in the Río de la Plata not as a void, but rather as a pervasive presence—diffused through informal networks of informants, the actions of local clerical agents, and symbolic acts of repression that underscore the adaptable nature of imperial religious control.

The editorial work of George Kechagioglou at the INS/Manolis Triantafyllides Foundation includes a two-volume [Early Modern Greek] Prose Anthology (2001), a three-volume edition of all early Modern Greek versions of Apollonius of Tyre (2004) and the series "Older Texts of Modern Greek Literature" (with Kechagioglou as General Editor) which has produced 16 titles between 2010-2024 – the most recent being the Book of Sindbad the Philosopher (Μυθολογικόν Σιντίπα) edited by Kechagioglou himself). In 2021, the publication of Georgios Lapatis (Stathas) Erotic Story inaugurated the new series “Texts of Modern Greek Literature” (with Kechagioglou serving again as General Editor), and was followed, in 2022, by the publication of Konstantinos Rossetis’ Elegant Story or Eumenia and Sapphiades – both volumes were produced with Kechagioglou’s editorial care. In this paper, I focus on the latter two prose works, which almost double the “amorous fiction” of the Modern Greek Enlightenment and highlight various interesting aspects of the Phanariote society. Taking into account the declared editorial choices of both the series and the editor himself, the paper emphasizes on the way in which Kechagioglou works in the introductions to his editions: the constant generic, genealogical, historical and other reframing he provides – which not only examines the Greek (modern and otherwise) paradigm, but also opens up to both Western and Eastern literary traditions – is extensively presented and critically discussed. Kechagioglou’s editions of modern Greek literary works are proved to provide both scholarly reliable and easy-to-use texts, accompanied by rich introductions which allow best understanding of each text’s generic attributions and, ultimately, a fair historical and literary assessment, while at the same time allowing ample space for further research investigations to fill in the gaps created by the many interesting research questions he raises. In this sense, the paper concludes with a new proposal concerning the author of the Elegant Story (which draws on Machiavelli's Favola), Konstantinos Rossetis, and suggests that he, most probably, is the same person as the later famous Romanian revolutionary, liberal politician, publisher-printer-bookseller, journalist, literary figure, translator and important theatrical figure and actor Constantin Alexandru Rosetti (1816-1885), who composed the text in Greek as a 16-year-old student, possibly with the encouragement (?) and/or the help (?) of his teacher at the St. Savvas College in Bucharest Costache Aristia (1800-1880) during the school year 1832-33.

This book breaks with three common scholarly barriers of periodization, discipline and geography in its exploration of the related themes of heresy, magic and witchcraft. It sets aside constructed chronological boundaries, and in doing so aims to achieve a clearer picture of what 'went before', as well as what 'came after'. Thus the volume demonstrates continuity as well as change in the concepts and understandings of magic, heresy and witchcraft. In addition, the geographical pattern of similarities and diversities suggests a comparative approach, transcending confessional as well as national borders. Throughout the medieval and early modern period, the orthodoxy of the Christian Church was continuously contested. The challenge of heterodoxy, especially as expressed in various kinds of heresy, magic and witchcraft, was constantly present during the period 1200-1650. Neither contesters nor followers of orthodoxy were homogeneous groups or fractions. They themselves and their ideas changed from one century to the next, from region to region, even from city to city, but within a common framework of interpretation. Alkohol zohrával v minulosti významnú úlohu takmer vo všetkých oblastiach života človeka. V rôznej forme, koncentrácii a kvalite bol súčasťou stravovania a výživy. Bol tiež nápojom slávností, hostín, obiet, úkonov a rituálov, potvrdzovali sa ním prísahy, zmluvy a obchody, prípitkom sa vyjadrovala úcta živým i mŕtvym. Alkohol sa však využíval nielen ako nápoj, liek a anestetikum, ale aj ako súčasť kozmetických a balzamovacích prípravkov či antiseptikum. Kultúra pitia alkoholu sa v priebehu storočí menila a vyvíjala, v základných rysoch však pretrvala a tento dodnes najviac tolerovaný intoxikant, vyhľadávaný i zatracovaný, sa stal súčasťou aj nášho kultúrneho dedičstva. Pohľad na fenomén alkoholu v dejinách, kultúre, literatúre, životnom štýle, stravovaní, kriminalite či práve v tejto spoločnej monografii i čitateľovi prináša kolektív slovenských a zahraničných historikov.

Focusing on medieval natural philosophy, the research paper reveals a dynamic interplay between theology and scientific inquiry, where figures such as Thomas Aquinas and Roger Bacon engaged in rigorous debates to reconcile Aristotelian principles with Christian doctrines. This ignored relationship provided a fertile ground for scientific exploration. The study traces the evolution of philosophy's scope across ancient Greece, the medieval period, and the early modern age, highlighting shifts in focus and interpretation. It emphasized the unique contributions of medieval natural philosophy in shaping the trajectory of science development. The article contends that medieval scholars, far from being confined by religious constraints, actively nurtured the seeds of scientific inquiry. By delving into specific questions about nature and embracing empirical observations within a theological framework, they laid the groundwork for the empirical methods that define modern science. The research challenging the argument on the limitations of traditional historiography, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive understanding of science's evolution that recognizes the contributions of diverse historical periods. Finally, paper concludes by calling for a reexamination of the narrative surrounding medieval natural philosophy, portraying it not as a period of stagnation, but as a crucial and dynamic phase where the foundation of modern science were laid. Through this critical historiographical review, an impactful understanding of the complex history of science emerges, acknowledging the rich legacies that continue to influence our world.

Στὴν παροῦσα εἰσήγηση ἐπιχειρεῖται μία ἱστορικὴ καὶ ἑρμηνευτικὴ προσέγγιση τοῦ φαινομένου τῶν μαρτύρων μέσα ἀπὸ τὰ βιβλία των Μακκαβαίων. Ἀρχικά, ἐξετάζονται οἱ συγκεκριμένες περιπτώσεις τῶν προσώπων ποὺ μαρτύρησαν κατὰ τὴ Μακκαβαϊκὴ περίοδο, ὅπως αὐτὲς ἐμφανίζονται στὰ Β΄ καὶ Δ΄ Μακκαβαίων. Ἀκολούθως, ἐρευνᾶται ἡ ἐπίδραση ποὺ ἄσκησαν αὐτὲς οἱ μαρτυρικὲς μορφὲς τοῦ ἰουδαϊσμοῦ τῆς ἑλληνιστικῆς περιόδου στὸν πρώιμο χριστιανισμό. Ἡ πρόσληψη τῆς μνήμης τῶν Μακκαβαίων μαρτύρων ἀπὸ τὴ χριστιανικὴ πίστη τῶν πρώτων αἰώνων ὡς πρότυπα μαρτυρίου αὐξανόταν ὁλοένα καὶ περισσότερο, ἐνῷ τὴν ἴδια στιγμὴ ὁ Ἰουδαϊσμὸς μοιάζει νὰ ἀπομακρύνεται ἀπὸ τὰ συγκεκριμένα πρότυπα καὶ νὰ ἀναζητεῖ νὰ ἐνστερνιστεῖ ἄλλα παραδείγματα μαρτυρίου. Μέσα σὲ αὐτὸ τὸ πλαίσιο, ἐξετάζονται καὶ ἀναλύονται οἱ αἰτίες ποὺ ὁδήγησαν στὸ νὰ καταστεῖ ὁ ρόλος τῶν Μακκαβαίων μαρτύρων ὁλοένα καὶ σημαντικότερος ἀπὸ τὶς χριστιανικὲς ἱστοριογραφικὲς πηγές, παρ’ ὅλο ποὺ ἐπρόκειτο γιὰ προχριστιανικὲς μορφὲς μαρτυρίου. Ἡ θεματικὴ σύγκριση ἀνάμεσα στὴν πρόσληψη τῶν Μακκαβαίων μαρτύρων τόσο ἀπὸ τὴν χριστιανικὴ ὅσο καὶ τὴ ραββινικὴ γραμματεία τῶν πρώτων αἰώνων καταδεικνύει πὼς ἀναμφίβολα ὑπάρχουν ὁμοιότητες στὴν ἀποδοχή τους ἀπὸ τὶς δύο θρησκεῖες. Παράλληλα, ὅμως, αὐτοὶ οἱ δύο κόσμοι καταλήγουν, ὅπως θὰ διαπιστωθεῖ, νὰ ἀντιληφθοῦν τοὺς Μακκαβαίους μάρτυρες μὲ ἕναν πολὺ διαφορετικὸ τρόπο, ποὺ ἔχει ὡς ἀποτέλεσμα, αὐτοὶ νὰ υἱοθετηθοῦν σχεδὸν ἀπόλυτα ἀπὸ τὴ χριστιανικὴ λατρεία.

La contemporanea "presenza" alla Dieta di Mantova (1459) di Isotta Nogarola e di Barbara di Brandeburgo offre un'occasione unica per approfondire le modalità della loro partecipazione alla vita sia culturale sia politica di metà Quattrocento. In questo contributo si analizza anche il legame di entrambe con la figura di Eva: alla umanista veronese si deve il primo tentativo sistematico di un riscatto della prima donna, mentre alla marchesa di Mantova Leonardo Montagna dedica la sua lode della virtù femminile e la sua inappuntabile defensio Evae.
