This article analyzes the dynamics of the post-Mohács Ottoman timariot army, exploring the Ottoman military transformation within the Ottoman frontier districts or sub-provinces (sancak/liva), namely Semendria and Bosnia, with a specific focus on the prelude to the Ottoman–Habsburg struggle. As the Ottoman–Habsburg conflict unfolded, the Ottomans gathered formidable garrison troops along the Hungarian frontier, unprecedented in its history. Drawing insights from various undated documents spanning 1530 to 1532, this article investigates the potential Ottoman army available for military campaigns in the West, which previous research have only made estimations. A specific roll-call register provides details on the actual size of the Rumelian timariot army during the 1532 campaign. The study also examines the factors and methods contributing to the growth of the timariot army in the frontier regions and the emergence of a distinct frontier power holder typology, exemplified by clans such as the Hüsrev Bey and Yahyalı clans. The article further explores the upkeep of substantial household troops commanded by these governors (sancakbeyi), their integration into the timar system, and their role in the raids and magnitude of the slavery-based economy. It also analyzes the leaders of raids into Croatia and offers an overview of the typology of the frontier soldier.

Islamic ornamentation represents one of the most distinctive visual expressions of cultural identity in Albania, particularly in the city of Berat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its layered historical fabric. The city's mosques and traditional houses not only reflect Ottoman-era aesthetics but also embody centuries of spiritual, social, and artisanal practices. Despite its historical and artistic value, this form of cultural heritage, both tangible and intangible, has received limited scholarly attention and faces increasing vulnerability due to urbanisation, neglect, and the erosion of traditional knowledge. This research foregrounds Islamic ornamentation in Berat as a critical and under-recognised component of Albania's cultural heritage, advocating for a multidimensional approach that balances heritage conservation, academic inquiry, and community engagement.

In Anatolian Seljuks and Ottoman periods, darussifas, which established on behalf of royal women, provided free health care to all citizens. Moreover, being the patronage of this foundation was enabled to enhance these women’s prestige. The number of women who instituted darussifas is extremely high. Given the attention it receives in the sources, there is little doubt that slave runaways represented a major problem in the Ottoman Empire. The present study hopes to add to our understanding of this phenomenon by considering the information on fugitive slaves as recorded in the sharīʿa court records of Aleppo during the second half of the 16th and early 17th centuries. Using both quantitative evidence and anecdotal examples, the study explores a number of issues relating to slave networking, use of resources, the difficulties facing fugitives, the process of capture, the state's treatment of fugitives, and the question of slave agency. The study ends with a look at gender and racial factors affecting abscondment. It concludes with an affirmation that racial biases played an important role in encouraging abscondment.

This article examines the roles of exploratores, spie and cursores-covert scouts, spies and couriers-documented in the sources of the late medieval Dalmatian towns. Although medieval espionage remains still under-researched, recent scholarship allows for situating Dalmatian cases within a broader medieval espionage framework, particularly in relation to Italian city-states' practices. Using mostly case studies from the towns of Trogir, Split, Šibenik and Dubrovnik, the article demonstrates how local and regional power-holders deployed spies to gather critical information during military or factional conflicts in Croatia and Dalmatia and to track external threats, such as advancing Ottoman armies in the 15th century. Unlike some Italian cities, in which we can trace institutionalized espionage, Dalmatian towns relied mostly on ad hoc measures and temporary councils for security, reflecting their own sociopolitical landscape and priorities.

Zamanla atılan bu adımın üzerine çeşitli eklemeler yapılmıştır. Türkiye, 26 Mart 1931'de metrik sistemleri, yasal metroloji kapsamında uluslararası metrik sisteme tam uyumlu hâle getirmiştir.

At the turn of the 16th century, the seemingly unstoppable Ottoman islamic expansion was terrorizing Europeans especially in the Holy Roman Empire. Using only artistic pieces, this article explains how this threat was perceived and what were the different reactions in Europe.

The Territorial Extent of the Ottoman Occupation and the Role of Szabolcs County in the 16th–17th Centuries

The study of the territorial expansion of the Ottoman occupation, the assessment of double-taxation areas, and the exploration of Ottoman-Hungarian relations in the early modern period have played an important role in the work of historians focusing on the 16th and 17th centuries. Many scholars have examined the process of Ottoman settlement, the organization of border fortress troops, and patterns of conquest. Most research has concentrated on the territories directly under Ottoman control and the double-taxed zones, while the relationship of Szabolcs County to Ottoman rule has remained relatively underexplored.

Within the Kingdom of Hungary, Szabolcs County was unique in that it lay at the intersection of three competing spheres of influence: the Kingdom of Hungary, the Principality of Transylvania, and the Ottoman Empire. The changing tides of history demonstrated the strategic importance of this region and neighboring counties such as Szatmár, as these territories changed hands multiple times during the 17th century.

Szabolcs County’s significance was further enhanced by its location on an important international trade route, which passed through the customs station at Tokaj, continued to the region of Szepes (Spiš), then to Danzig (Gdańsk), and finally by ship to Amsterdam. Additionally, as a lowland area, the county was home to flourishing cattle and sheep breeding; of these, cattle breeding was particularly important, as Hungarian cattle were one of the most sought-after export goods of the period.

A török hódoltság területi kiterjedése, a kettős adózású területek felmérése, a korabeli török-magyar kapcsolatok kutatása fontos szerepet kapott a 16-17. századi történelem kutatóinak munkáiban. Többek tárgyalták a török berendezkedésének folyamatát, végvári katonaságuk berendezkedését, hódítási szokásaikat. A vizsgálódás jelentős része a Hódoltság területére, illetve a kettős adózású területek feltárására terjedt ki, és viszonylag érintetlenül hagyta Szabolcs megye viszonyát a török hódítással. A Magyar Királyságban Szabolcs vármegye volt egyetlen olyan terület, amely három érdekszféra-Magyar Királyság, Erdély, Török Hódoltság-határán feküdt. A történelem váltakozó eseményei igazolták a megye, illetve e megyék (például Szatmár) fontosságát, hiszen a 17. század folyamán több esetben is gazdát cseréltek. Szabolcs megye fontosságát növelte az is, hogy területén nemzetközi kereskedelmi út haladt a Tokaji vámon át a Szepesség, onnan pedig Danzig, majd hajón Amszterdam felé. Ezenkívül alföldi terület lévén, a megyében virágzott a szarvasmarha és juhtenyésztés is, amelyből az előbbi a kor egyik meghatározó magyar kereskedelmi terméke volt.

Osmanlı düşüncesinin ürettiği en etkili literatürlerden biri olan mukaddimât-ı erbaʿanın telif sebeplerindeki değişimi izlemek üzere kaleme aldığımız bu tebliğde haşiyeler iki grup olarak tasniflenmiştir. İlk grubu Fatih dönemi haşiyeleri oluştururken ikinci grup 18. yüzyılda kaleme alınan haşiyelerden oluşmaktadır. Fatih döneminde kaleme alınan haşiyelerde sebeb-i telifte siyasal iradenin talebinin öne çıktığı anlaşılmaktadır. Nitekim Kâtib Çelebi’nin (ö. 1067/1657) ve haşiye müelliflerinin aktardığına göre Fatih Sultan Mehmed, dönemin ulemasından mukaddimât-ı erbaʿaya haşiye yazmalarını istemiştir. Bunun üzerine Kestelî (ö. 901/1496), Molla Samsûnîzâde (ö. 891/1486), Hatibzâde (ö. 901/1496), Molla Alâeddin Arabî (ö. 901/1496) gibi önemli simalar haşiye kaleme almışlardır. Fatih Sultan Mehmed’in isteğiyle başlayan bu gelenek 15. yüzyılla sınırlı kalmamış; Siyâlkûtî (ö. 1067/1657), Kavukcîzâde (ö. 1133/1721), Büyük Hafız Efendi (ö. 1154/1741), Kazâbâdî (ö. 1163/1750), İsmail Konevî (ö. 1195/1781), Hafîd en-Nisârî (ö. 1188/1774) gibi isimler tarafından devam ettirilmiştir. Özellikle 18. yüzyıla gelindiğinde mukaddimât-ı erbaʿa haşiyelerinin telifinde ciddi bir artış gözlemlenmiştir. Zira bu dönemde yedi adet haşiye kaleme alınmıştır. 18. yüzyılda kaleme alınan mukaddimât-ı erbaʿa haşiyelerinin telif sebeplerinde “efâl-i ibâd” konusunda doğru olan yaklaşımın ortaya konulmasına yönelik çaba etkili olmuştur. Bu tebliğde, mukaddimât-ı erbaʿa muhaşşîlerinin, Mâtürîdîlerin özellikle Sadrüşşerîa’nın insan fiilleri konusundaki yaklaşımını “hakk” olarak değerlendirilip bir çözüm olarak sunduklarına işaret edilmiştir. Aynı yüzyılda ve benzer saiklerle telif edilen irâde-i cüz’iyye literatürünün mukaddimât-ı erbaʿa haşiyeleriyle irtibatına dikkat çekilmiştir. Buna göre 18. yüzyılda mukaddimât-ı erbaʿaya olan ilginin artmasında Mâtürîdîlik vurgusu ve dönemde etkin olan irâde-i cüz’iyye tartışmaları önemli bir rol oynamıştır. Bu tebliğin amacı, 15. yüzyılda Fatih Sultan Mehmed’in emriyle kaleme alınan haşiyelerin sebeb-i telifinde siyasal talebin; 18. yüzyılda kaleme alınan haşiyelerde ise insan fiilleri konusunda “hak” olan görüşün tespitine yönelik ilmi sebebin öne çıktığını göstermektedir.

Bu çalışmada, Bogdan G. Popescu’nun yazarı olduğu İmparatorluk Sınır Bölgeleri: Habsburg Askeri Sınırının Kurumları ve Mirasları adlı kitabın tanıtılması amaçlanmıştır. Bu çalışma, 1871-1948 yılları arasında Kudüs’teki mekânsal dönüşümü, Osmanlı ve İngiliz şehircilik politikaları bağlamında ele almakta, bu politikaların kentin tarihsel dokusu ve toplumsal yapısı üzerindeki etkilerini sorgulamaktadır. Mevcut literatürde Kudüs’teki mekânsal ve toplumsal ayrışmanın kökenleri genellikle Osmanlı dönemine temellendirilmektedir. Bu yaklaşımın başlangıç noktası Avrupalı haritacılar tarafından çizilen ve Kudüs’ü dini gruplara bölünmüş bir kent olarak tasvir eden haritaların oluşturduğu vizyondur. Çalışma Osmanlı ile İngiliz dönemlerinde uygulanan şehircilik politikalarını ele alarak, bu yaygın görüşü sorgulamaktadır. 19. yüzyıl boyunca üretilmiş onlarca Kudüs haritası, gerçekte şehrin heterojen yapısını ve farklı toplumsal grupların bir arada yaşama olgusunun mekânı nasıl şekillendirdiğini ortaya koymaktan uzaktır. Halbuki gerek Osmanlı arşiv belgeleri gerekse bu dönemde yapılmış olan nüfus sayımı kayıtları, bu ayrıştırıcı bakışı çürüten veriler sağlamakta; suriçi kentte farklı dini toplulukların iç içe geçmiş bir şekilde yaşadığını ve iddia edilen cemaat ayrışmasının gerçekte mevcut olmadığını göstermektedir. Ne var ki 1917 yılından itibaren Kudüs’ün İngiltere’nin kontrolüne geçmesiyle, Avrupalı haritacıların çizimlerinde tasvir edilen “ayrıştırılmış” Kudüs imgesi, gerçeğe dönüşmeye başlamıştır. İngiliz sömürgeciliğinin ve sömürgeciliğe hizmet eden şehircilik uygulamalarının hâkim olduğu bu süreç, Kudüs’ün mekânsal dokusunu derinden etkilemiştir. Özellikle William McLean (1918), Patrik Geddes (1919), Charles Robert Ashbee (1922) ve Henry Kendal (1944) tarafından hazırlanan dört ayrı şehirleşme projesine hâkim olan yaklaşım, bu yargıyı kanıtlar niteliktedir. Manda yönetiminin şehirleşme uygulamaları, bilhassa “yeşil kuşak” uygulaması, suriçi alanı dini ve tarihi mirasın korunması gerektiği bahanesiyle bir “açık hava müzesi” haline getirmiş, surdışı yerleşim alanı ise modern Avrupa şehircilik prensiplerine göre yeniden düzenlenmiş, böylece birbirinden kopuk ve ayrışmış iki ayrı yerleşim alanı ortaya çıkmıştır. Sonuç olarak, Osmanlı Kudüs’ünün kolektif yaşam alanları işlevini kaybetti, sosyal ve mekânsal ayrışma açıkça izlenebilir oldu.

This study examines the spatial transformation of Jerusalem between 1871 and 1948 in the context of Ottoman and British urban policies and questions the effects of the imperial policies on the historical fabric and social structure of the city. In the current literature, the origins of the spatial and social segregation of the city have been traced back to the Ottoman period. The starting point for this approach is the vision constructed in the urban plans drawn up by European cartographers in the 19th century. These maps depict Jerusalem as a city sharply divided between religious communities. This study challenges that common view through an examination of the urban policies of the late Ottoman and British periods. The 19th-century urban plans of Jerusalem do not reveal the heterogeneity of the city and how the coexistence of different social groups shaped the space. The Ottoman census records and other types of archival documents provide data that contradict this segregationist view. They show that different religious communities intermingled within the walled city and that the claimed segregation did not actually exist. Yet, when Jerusalem came under British control in 1917, the image of a 'segregated' Jerusalem depicted in the drawings of European cartographers come to become a reality. The spatial fabric of Jerusalem was deeply affected by this process, which was dominated by British colonialism and urban planning practices that served colonialism. This suggestion is particularly evident in the four different urbanisation projects developed by William McLean (1918), Patrik Geddes (1919), Charles Robert Ashbee (1922) and Henry Kendal (1944). The urbanisation practices of the British administration created two separate urban settlements; in particular, the "green belt" turned the walled area into an "open-air museum" under the pretext of preserving the religious and historical heritage, while the settlement area outside the walls was reorganised according to the principles of modern European urbanism. As a result, the collective living spaces of Ottoman Jerusalem lost their function, and the social and spatial segregation became clearly visible.

MEHMED TEVFİK'İN İKİ GELİN ODASI ROMANINDA CARİYE TİPOLOJİLERİ Özet Tarihî süreç içerisinde eski çağ ve milletlere kadar uzanan kölelik ve cariyelik, Osmanlının toplumsal hayatında önemli bir konumda bulunur. Varlığı yirminci yüzyıla kadar süren cariyeliğin edebî metinlerde geniş bir perspektifle yer alması Tanzimat Dönemi'nde ortaya çıkar. Dönem sanatçılarının özel hayatlarında daha çok anneleri aracılığıyla tanıştıkları cariyelik, aynı zamanda hürriyet teması etrafında değindikleri bir müessesedir. Yaşadığı dönem (1843-1893) itibarıyla Mehmed Tevfik de Tanzimat Dönemi içerisinde yer alan sanatçılardan biridir. 1301 (1883/1884) yılında yayımladığı İki Gelin Odası, dönemin Osmanlı toplumunun örf, âdet ve geleneklerine ışık tutması kadar cariyeliği ele almasıyla öne çıkar. Bu bağlamda eserde öne çıkan kadın karakterlerin cariye veya cariye kökenli oluşları dikkat çekicidir. Romanın esas kısmını oluşturan ikinci hikâyede çatışma unsuru cariyeler üzerinden sağlanır. Cevriye, Mihridil, Canfeda ve Kethüda Kadın eserde daha fazla durulan cariyelerdir. Mihridil kurban cariye; Cevriye ve yardımcısı Canfeda şeytan cariye; Kevser ve Kethüda Kadın ise kendi hâlinde yaşayan cariyeler olarak romanda cariye tipolojisini oluştururlar.

On 4-6 June 2025, the workshop TRANSLATION AND MULTILINGUALISM IN MONGOL AND POST-MONGOL EURASIA, co-organised with NoMansLand (IFI - ÖAW), will take place at the University of Münster, Germany. The workshop investigates the intricacies of translation and multilingualism in Mongol and post-Mongol Eurasia from the thirteenth to seventeenth centuries, analysing how texts, concepts, and knowledge traversed linguistic and cultural divides, as well as identifying the mechanisms that enabled effective communication and comprehension within a multilingual sphere. Viewing translation as an embodiment of knowledge transmission, it delves deeper into the subject of translation as a notion, procedure, and outcome, debating who transferred knowledge, when, and in what settings.

Osmanlı Devleti’nin 16. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinde, Mısır ve Suriye’nin fethi sonrasında Doğu Akdeniz’i çevreleyen bölgede yayılmaya başlaması, bu hâkimiyet sahası içerisinde kalan ve muhasımın ileri deniz karakolu durumunda bulunan Kıbrıs’ın fethini; askerî, ekonomik, siyasî ve coğrafî bir zorunluluğa dönüştürmüştü. Zira bu bölgede kurulan egemenliğin istikrarı ve devamı Doğu Akdeniz’de deniz kontrolünün tesis edilmesine bağlıydı. Bu kontrolün sağlanması Akdeniz’in üçüncü, Doğu Akdeniz’in ise bu en büyük adası olan
Kıbrıs’ın hâkimiyet altına alınmasıyla mümkündü. Bu maksatla 1570 yılında ada üzerine düzenlenen sefer 1571 yılında başarıyla neticelenmiş, Kıbrıs 1571 yılında fethedilerek Osmanlı egemenliğine girmiştir.
Osmanlı Devleti açısından stratejik bir öneme sahip olan Kıbrıs adasına sefer düzenlenmesi kararı alındıktan sonra, kara ve deniz unsurlarının sefer hazırlıkları başlamıştır. Bu hazırlıkların başarılı bir neticeyle sonuçlanması günümüz modern askerî terminolojisinde amfibi harekât olarak adlandırılan, çıkarma harekâtının başarılı bir şekilde icrasına bağlıydı. Zira başarılı bir çıkarma yapılarak kıyı başının tutulabilmesi ve muharip birliklerin karaya çıkarılmasıyla daha sonra yapılacak olan kara harekâtı gerçekleştirilebilirdi. Bu sebeple askerî açıdan bir adanın fethinin ilk aşamasını, başarılı bir çıkarmanın gerçekleştirilmesi oluşturmaktaydı. Bu anlamda Kıbrıs seferinde, çıkarmayı gerçekleştirecek olan Osmanlı donanmasının İstanbul’dan demir alması sonrasında amfibi harekâtın yükleme noktasına seyri, yükleme noktasından bindirmenin yapılarak Kıbrıs’ın güneyine çıkarmanın gerçekleştirilmesi, kıyı başının tutulması sırasında yaşanan ilk çatışmalara dair bilgi temin edilmesini sağlayan arşiv belgeleri, kronikler ve muhtelif çalışmalar bulunmaktadır. Bu çalışmada kavramsal ve analitik açıdan daha ziyade Kıbrıs seferinin ilk çıkarma safhası sürecine değinilerek, harbin başarısı için oldukça mühim olan amfibi harekâtın icrası, çıkarma sonrasında yaşanan ilk çatışmalar, Kıbrıs adasına köprü başı tutularak düşman bölgesine çıkarmanın gerçekleştirilmesi, böylece muhasara birliklerinin harbe hazır hale gelmesi gibi gelişmeler üzerinde durulacaktır.

The Ottoman Empire expanded its influence in the Eastern Mediterranean region in the early 16th century. After conquering Egypt and Syria, it became strategically, economically, politically, and geographically essential for the Ottomans to conquer Cyprus, which had been an important maritime outpost for their enemies because the stability and continuation of the sovereignty established in this region depended on establishing maritime control in the Eastern Mediterranean. Achieving this control was possible by dominating Cyprus, the third-largest island of the Mediterranean and the largest island of the Eastern Mediterranean. For this purpose, the Ottoman Empire organized an expedition on the island in 1570, concluding it successfully in 1571. Thus, Cyprus was conquered in 1571 and came under Ottoman rule. After the decision was made to organize an expedition to the island of Cyprus, which had a strategic importance for the Ottoman Empire, preparations for the expedition of land and sea elements began. The success of these preparations depended on the successful execution of the landing operation, known in modern military terminology as an amphibious operation. The subsequent land operation hinged on a successful landing, establishing a beachhead, and deploying combat troops on the island. In this sense, the first stage of the military conquest of an island was the realization of a successful landing. In this sense, there are essential archival documents, chronicles, and various studies that provide us with information about the Ottoman Navy's navigation of the amphibious operation to the loading point, the landing operation to the south of Cyprus after the boarding from the loading point, and the first clashes during the holding of the shore head. Rather than conceptual and analytical analysis, this study examines the first landing phase of the Cyprus expedition and focuses on the developments such as the execution of the amphibious operation, which was crucial for the success of the expedition, the first clashes after the landing, the establishment of the bridgehead on the island of Cyprus, and the landing in the enemy area, thus making the siege troops ready for war.

Kıbrıs, XVI. yüzyılın ikinci yarısından itibaren Osmanlı Devleti’nin Doğu Akdeniz’de deniz egemenliği tesis etmesinde hayati bir rol oynamıştır. Osmanlı Devleti ile Venedik arasındaki önemli siyasi ihtilafların kaynaklarından birisini oluşturan bu ada, Doğu Akdeniz’in ortasında merkezi bir konumda bulunması sebebiyle bölgedeki askerî ve ticari faaliyetleri doğrudan veya dolaylı etkilemekteydi. Ada çevresinde bulunan Doğu Akdeniz topraklarının, XVI. yüzyılın ilk çeyreğinden itibaren Osmanlı egemenliğine girmiş olması, bu toprakların ortasında Hristiyan dünyasının ileri bir deniz üssü durumunda bulunan Kıbrıs Adası’nın fethini coğrafi, askerî, siyasi ve ekonomik açıdan bir zaruret hâline getirmiştir. Bu zaruret hâlinin bertaraf edilmesi için 1570 yılında başlatılan Kıbrıs seferi, kara ve deniz unsurlarının müşterek olarak gerçekleştirdikleri modern askerî terminolojideki karşılığı ile başarılı bir amfibi harekâttı. Osmanlı ordusunun adaya çıkarma yapmasını müteakip başlayan kara savaşları safhasında, askerî devrimin yeni kale tipi olan trace italienne tarzının ilk örnekleri arasında yer alan Lefkoşa Kalesi ve yeni savunma sistemi esaslarına göre tahkim edilen müstahkem Magosa Kalesi’nin fethi için zorlu bir mücadele verilmiştir. Osmanlı Devleti’nin XVI. yüzyılda gerçekleştirdiği en uzun süreli kuşatmalardan biri olan Kıbrıs seferi, izlenen başarılı askerî strateji ve taktikler neticesinde bir yılı aşkın kuşatma sürecinden sonra başarıyla sonuçlanmış, Kıbrıs Adası 1571 yılında tamamen fethedilmiştir. Bu çalışmada, Kıbrıs seferinin süreçleri esas alınarak sefer öncesi siyasi durum, seferin organizasyonu ve hazırlıkları, adaya çıkarma harekâtının icrası, kara savaşları ve kale muhasaralarının safhaları üzerinde durularak, Kıbrıs’ın fethinin nasıl gerçekleştiği izah edilmeye çalışılmıştır.

Cyprus played a critical role in establishing maritime sovereignty of the Ottoman Empire in the Eastern Mediterranean since the second half of the 16th century. This island, which constituted one of the important political issues between the Ottoman Empire and Venice, directly or indirectly affected the military and commercial activities in the region due to its central location in the middle of the Eastern Mediterranean. The fact that the Eastern Mediterranean lands around the island came under Ottoman rule in the first quarter of the 16th century made Cyprus an advanced naval base of the Christian world in the middle of these lands. This situation made the conquest of the island of Cyprus a necessity in terms of geography, military, political and economic aspects. The Cyprus expedition, which was launched in 1570 to eliminate this necessity, was a successful amphibious operation in modern military terminology, carried out jointly by land and sea elements. In the phase of land wars that started after the Ottoman army landed on the island, a tough struggle was fought for the conquest of Nicosia and Famagusta castles, which are among the first examples of the trace italienne style, which emerged as the new castle type of the military revolution. The Cyprus campaign, one of the longest sieges carried out by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century, ended successfully as a result of the successful military strategy and tactics followed during the siege period of more than a year. The island of Cyprus was completely conquered in 1571. In this study, based on the processes of the Cyprus expedition, the political situation before the expedition, the organization and preparations of the expedition are focused on. Then, it was tried to explain how the Ottoman navy carried out the landing operation on the island, the land wars after the landing and the phases of the castle sieges, and how the conquest of Cyprus took place.

A mohácsi csata centrumának pontos helye mind a mai napig vita tárgya.  A kutatók álláspontja két helyszín körül koncentrálódik: a többségi vélemény szerint II. Lajos serege a síkság nyugati felén a Majs-Nagynyárádi dombsor előterében állt fel, és a csata az egykori Nagymajs falu térségében zajlott. Ezzel szemben más kutatók – köztük e tanulmány szerzője – a síkság keleti oldalán, a Törökdomb környezetében valószínűsítik a hadrendet, az ütközet centrumát pedig a középkori Földvár falu északnyugati régiójában helyezik el. A két elméletet földrajzilag a Borza patak választja el egymástól, tudományos szempontból pedig az, hogy a régészeti leletek vagy a történeti források elsődlegességét fogadjuk el meghatározónak. A jelenleg domináns kutatási paradigma elsősorban a régészeti megközelítésre támaszkodik, mivel a Majsnál feltárt nagy számú hadileletet sokan önmagában perdöntő bizonyítéknak tekintik. Ez azonban félrevezető lehet, hisz miközben a történeti források bizonytalanságait gyakran túlértékelik, a régészeti adatok látszólagos objektivitása elfedi azok saját korlátait, például az értelmezésük szubjektív voltát vagy a leletkörnyezet esetleges torzulásait. Ez oknál fogva jelen tanulmány két újszerű megközelítést vet fel a csata helyszínének meghatározásához. Egyrészről rámutat a majsi csatatér koncepció legfontosabb fundamentumát jelentő régészeti leletek értékelésének módszertani problémáira, másrészről annak szükségszerűsége mellett érvel, hogy a csatatér lokalizációja nem végezhető el a helyszín kijelölésében egykor elsődleges szerepet játszó harcászati szempontok figyelembevétele nélkül. Mindeközben a kutatás olyan részletkérdésekre is választ keres, hogy a csata idején átjárható volt-e a Borza déli irányból? A történeti adatokból rekonstruálható-e a Duna egykori vízállása? A 20. századi meterológiai adatok alapján van-e korreláció Mohács és Eszék csapadékviszonyai között? Milyen dokumentálható terepakadályokkal kell számolni a síkságot övező tereplépcsőn Majs és Nyárád között? A csata napján milyen irányból és milyen módon vonult fel az oszmán hadsereg a csata napján?
Jelen dolgozat a majsi csatarekonstrukciót bemutató előadások és tanulmányok inspirációjára született, de tudatosan nem azokra reflektál, sokkal inkább a „Majs kontra Sátorhely”, illetve „régészet versus histográfia” kordinátarendszerben igyekszik értékelni a mohácsi csata lokalizációjához rendelkezésre álló adatokat. A majsi helyszín mellett érvelő kutatókat tisztelem, és nagyra becsülöm az általuk csatatérkutatásba fektetett hatalmas munkát. Észrevételeimnek ezért szándékoltan nincs címzettje, bízva abban, hogy a tárgyilagos megközelítés elősegíti felvetéseim nyitott és elfogulatlan mérlegelését, és nem csupán reflexszerű elutasításra késztet.

Barletta tra la fine del Medioevo e la prima Età moderna è stata uno dei principali centri portuali nel Regno di Napoli e una delle maggiori città della regione pugliese. Importante snodo per l'esportazione dei cereali provenienti dal Tavoliere, intratteneva intensi rapporti commerciali e culturali con l'altra sponda dell'Adriatico. Nell'ambito del fenomeno migratorio tra le regioni balcaniche e la Penisola italiana, che ebbe una sensibile accelerazione a partire dal Quattrocento, Barletta ospitò la più numerosa presenza di popolazioni transadriatiche, tra le quali, la più rappresentata era quella di origine slava o, come si definiva all'epoca, schiavona. In questo contributo si vuole fornire un quadro descrittivo della comunità schiavona di Barletta tra Tardo Medioevo e prima Età moderna utilizzando tanto fonti edite, quanto quelle inedite come due focatici del 1553 e del 1568 che forniscono l'elenco completo di tutte le famiglie e delle principali caratteristiche socioeconomiche e demografiche.

Between the end of the Middle Ages and the Early modern age, Barletta was one of the main harbor in the Kingdom of Naples and one of the major cities in the Apulian region. An important hub for the export of cereals from the Tavoliere, it maintained intense trading and cultural relationships with the other side of the Adriatic sea. As part of the migratory phenomenon between the Balkan regions and the Italian peninsula, which had a significant acceleration starting from the fifteenth century, Barletta hosted the largest presence of trans-Adriatic populations, among which, the most represented was that of Slavic origin or, as at the time, were defined as Schiavoni. The aim of this contribution is to provide a descriptive picture of the Slavic community in Barletta between the late Middle Ages and the Early modern age using both published and unpublished sources such as two focatici from 1553 and 1568 which provide the complete list of all the families and the main socioeconomic and demographic features.

The Levantines arose as a culturally hybrid community that straddled the boundaries between East and West. Seen by neither Ottoman society nor Europeans as belonging to a distinct group in a strict sense, they constructed an identity that was continually negotiated within the contexts of politics, economics, and culture. While the emergence of Levantine communities has been historically contested, the Levantine identity became more distinct, especially in the nineteenth century, and was described by Western travelers as "neither European nor Ottoman. This article examines the identity construction of Levantines living residing in the port cities of the Ottoman Empire, particularly in Izmir and Istanbul, in during the nineteenth century, and how they were positioned perceived as the "other" by British travelers. It emphasizes that Levantines in the Ottoman Empire were caught between their Western and Eastern identities, leading to their marginalization in both worlds. Seeking to redefine Levantine communities through the lens of British travelers and to reveal how Western perceptions shaped these communities, this study discusses how and in what ways Levantines were marginalized in the eyes of Westerners and how they were considered estranged from their Western identity.

İSLÂM BİLİM TARİHİ İÇİNDE astronomi çalışmalarının önemli bir yeri vardır. İslâm'ın ilk devirlerinden beri astronomi sahasında yapılan çalışmalar, zamanla ilerlemiş, daha önceki medeniyetlerin çalışmaları da ilave edilerek özellikle astronomi gözlemleri ile gezegen teorileri konularında büyük başarılar elde edilmiştir. Şam ve Bağdat gibi merkezlerde kurulan rasathanelerde pek çok astronom yetişmiş ve çok sayıda astronomi eseri kaleme alınmıştır. Meraga ve Semerkand gibi büyük rasathanelerde yapılan çalışmalarla İslâm astronomi bilimi zirveye ulaşmış ve her iki rasathane de kendi ekolünü oluşturmuştur. 1 Bu kurumlarda hazırlanan teorik astronomi eserleri ile zîçler; gerek İslâm dünyasında, gerekse bu dünyanın dışında kalan astronom, astrolog ve muvakkitler için temel rehber eserler olmuştur. İslâm astronomi geleneğini hem nazarî hem de amelî çerçevede devam ettiren Osmanlılar da Meraga ve Semerkand astronomi okullarını sürdüren bilim adamlarına sahip olmuşlardır. Osmanlılar bir yandan bu iki ekolün sürdürücüsü olan bilim adamlarını yetiştirirken, öte yandan da kendi ekollerini oluşturacak çalışmalara başlamışlardır. This is an open access chapter distributed under the terms of the cc by-nc-nd 4.0 license. chapter 23 schlein lated to medicine in the section of works 'taken' (maʾkhūdha) from the library of al-Sayyid Yaḥyā Efendī b. al-Sayyid Muḥammad al-Ṭībī of Jaffa in 1218/1803, and two books 'taken' from the libraries of al-Shaykh ʿAlī al-Rashīdī and al-Shaykh Muḥammad Wakīlkharaj in 1216/1801.7 The medical section alone in al-Jazzār's library inventory, with a total of 1707 entries, constitutes 2.9 per cent of all the entries, and when we add these other eleven entries, this comes to 3.5 per cent of the total inventory. These percentages are very slightly above the medical compositions of two eighteenth-century Damascus libraries. Said Aljoumani has written about both Muḥammad Pasha al-ʿAẓm's (d. 1197/1783) collection and that of Mullā ʿUthmān al-Kurdī (fl. c. 1204/1789). Muḥammad Pasha al-ʿAẓm, the governor of Damascus, held a library collection with an inventory of 457 entries. Nine of those entries were listed under the heading of ṭibb, and one Prophetic medicine title was listed under ḥadīth, making the medically related composition of this library inventory 2.2 percent of the total inventory.8 Similarly, Aljoumani's work in tracing the books of Mullā ʿUthmān al-Kurdī's library in Damascus notes 479 titles, eleven of which are related to medicine, constituting 2.3 per cent of the collection thus far.9 Al-Jazzār governed in Sidon and Damascus in the latter half of the eighteenth century, and his decision to endow a waqf that included a library and add to that library a medical section that ultimately constituted at least 2.9 per cent of the entries in his inventory makes his library comparable to those of his regional, Ottoman counterparts.10 The Medical Titles: Known Texts Al-Jazzār was governor of Sidon district beginning in 1775, during which time he moved his capital to Acre where he established his library, thus, he had ample reason to look the part of his educated status, both to his peers and to those he governed.11 His collections in ḥadīth (189 entries), fiqh (more than 200), nawḥ (189), tawḥīd and taṣawwuf (well above 100), and history (148) speak to the importance and priority of these subjects.12 Yet, this library was not meant to serve solely the interests of al-Jazzār, at least outwardly. The opening paragraph of the inventory stipulates that the library was a part of the madrasa complex, endowed and intended for the public benefit.13 It is, therefore, possible that these works were amassed for the 7

XVII. yüzyıl sonunda imzalanan 1699 Karlofça Antlaşması'nın ardından Osmanlı Devleti için önemli bir kazanç olan Prut Antlaşması bu özelliği sebebiyle dikkat çeken diplomatik bir hadisedir. Prut Savaşı neticesinde Osmanlı Devleti ile sulh yapmak zorunda kalan I. Petro, Prut Antlaşması ile Osmanlıların Karadeniz'deki hakimiyeti açısından önemli bir mevki olan Azak Kalesi'ni Osmanlı Devleti'ne geri vermek zorunda kalmıştı. Bunun haricinde antlaşmada Lehistan'ı da ilgilendiren meseleler ele alınmıştı. Buna göre Lehistan'a tacizlerde bulunulmayacağı gibi Kırım ve Leh kralına tabi olan Kazaklara da müdahalede bulunulmaması akd olunmuştu. 1709 yılında İsveç ile Rusya arasındaki Poltova'da aldığı büyük hezimetten sonra Kazak Hatmanı Mazepa ile beraber Osmanlı Devleti'ne sığınan ve yaklaşık 5 yıl gibi uzun bir süre Osmanlı Devleti'nde kalması hasebiyle "Demirbaş" olarak tesmiye edilen İsveç kralı XII. Karl'ın ülkesine geri dönmesi hususu da Prut Antlaşması'nın maddelerinden biri olmuştu. İsveç Kralı buna göre Lehistan üzerinden ülkesine gideceğinden, dolaylı olarak Lehistan'ın da sorumluluğu bulunmaktaydı. Osmanlı lehine maddeler ihtiva eden Prut Antlaşması hükümlerinin Rus çarı I. Petro tarafından uygulanmaması Osmanlı-Rus ilişkilerinin seyrini değiştirdiği gibi Baltacı Mehmed Paşa'nın azline giden süreci de hızlandırmıştı. This thesis examines the "dağlı" rebellion that emerged in the Rhodope Mountains between 1780-1810 through agricultural, environmental, and economic factors. At the end of the eighteenth century, the dağlıs formed large and small bandit groups in the east of the Balkans and served as mercenaries under the command of the local notables. The study looks at the activities of the dağlıs from a regional perspective. It investigates how the region's mountain system shaped local people's economic activities. It focuses on agricultural and animal products that were grown by the local populace as subsistence and commercial products. Specifically, it asserts that the deterioration of the balance in the production of agricultural products led to the dağlı rebellion. While explaining the rebellion, it refers to the characteristics of the rural rebellions in the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century, the property system, and landlord and peasant relations. It reveals the macro-economic structure of the settlements in the Rhodope Mountains through salnames. It examines the micro-economic structure on the basis of villages and households by using temettuat registers. In the light of these data, it emphasizes that environmental, agricultural, and economic factors were effective in the emergence of the dağlı rebellion.

Bu tez 1780-1810 tarihleri arasında Rodop Dağlarında ortaya çıkan Dağlı İsyanı'nı tarım, çevre ve ekonomi faktörleri üzerinden incelemektedir. 18. yüzyılın sonunda dağlılar Balkanlar'ın doğusunda irili ufaklı eşkıya grupları oluşturmuş ve ayanların emrinde paralı asker olarak görev yapmışlardır. Bu çalışma dağlıların faaliyetlerine bölgesel bir perspektiften bakmaktadır. Bölgenin dağlık yapısının halkın ekonomik faaliyetlerini nasıl şekillendirdiğini incelemektedir. Yerel halk tarafından geçimlik ve ticari olarak yetiştirilen tarımsal ve hayvansal ürünlere odaklanır. Tarımsal ürünlerin üretimindeki dengenin bozulmasının dağlı isyanına yol açtığını savunmaktadır. İsyanı açıklarken 19. Yüzyılda Osmanlı İmparatorluğu'nda yaşanan kırsal isyanların mahiyetine, mülkiyet sistemine, toprak sahibi ve köylü ilişkilerine değinmektedir. Ardından Rodop Dağları'ndaki yerleşim yerlerinin makro iktisadi yapısını salname verileri aracılığıyla ortaya sermektedir. Mikro ekonomik yapıyı köyler ve haneler bazında temettuat defterlerini kullanarak incelemektedir. Bu veriler ışığında çevresel, tarımsal ve ekonomik değişkenlerin isyanın ortaya çıkmasında etkili olduğunu vurgular.

Giorgio di Poděbrad, Re di Boemia (l’attuale Repubblica Ceca), quando salì al trono nel 1458 si trovò un regno diviso tra cattolici e hussiti[1], con vicini difficili come l’imperatore Federico III d’Asburgo e il papa Pio II, che considerandolo un eretico, tentarono di indebbolirne il potere in diverse maniere. Nonostante tutto il sovrano hussita cercò di consolidare il suo regno, sia negoziando con la Chiesa cattolica, tanto che nel 1462 ottenne la revoca della scomunica personale da papa Pio II, anche se non riuscì a far accettare pienamente la sua fede utraquista, sia tentando di creare i presupposti per porre fine alle continue guerre nel continente che erano fonte di instabilità e di tensioni politiche che si riverberavano anche in Boemia.
Nonostante il suo impegno nel 1466, papa Paolo II lo dichiarò lo stesso eretico e deposto, lanciando persino una crociata contro di lui guidata da Mattia Corvino, Re d’Ungheria, che invase la Boemia senza grandi successi visto che Re Giorgio gli si oppose con capacità dimostrando abilità militari notevoli. Proprio per questo il “il re hussita” o “il re dei due popoli” per il suo tentativo di conciliare cattolici e utraquisti oggi, in Repubblica Ceca, è celebrato come un simbolo dell’indipendenza nazionale e di resistenza alle aggressioni esterne. La sua visione politica, in particolare il Tractatus pacis toti Christianitati fiendae[2], che di seguito il lettore trova sia nel testo latino che in lingua italiana tratto da The universal peace organization of King George of Bohemia; a fifteenth century plan for world peace, 1462/1464 in cui si trova tradotto solo in francese, inglese, russo e spagnolo pubblicato a Praga dalla House of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences nel 1964 (in pieno regime comunista) grazie allo storico Václav Vaněček, lo rende una figura precorritrice del principio di cooperazione internazionale su base volontaria.

Hz. Peygamber'in, Kur'an âyetlerini gerektiğinde tefsir ettiğini gösteren hadislerin mevcudiyeti bilinmektedir. 1 Hz. Peygamber ve sahabe dönemi, tefsir faaliyetlerinin sözlü rivayete dayanması, bu dönemde Kur'an'ı başdan sona tefsir etmeyip, manası kapalı âyetlerin tefsirini ihtiva etmesi sebebiyle "tefsirin birinci merhalesi" olarak kabul edilmektedir. Ali b. Ebî Tâlib (40/660), Abdullah b. Mes'ud (32/652), Ubey b. Ka'b (19/640), Abdullah b. Abbâs (68/687), Ebû Mûsâ el-Eş'arî (44/664), Zeyd b. Sâbit (45/665) gibi sahabe müfessirlere isnat edilen tefsir rivayetleri, Kur'an'dan bir âyetin veya âyet grubunun tefsiri ya da bir âyet içerisindeki kelime ya da kavramın anlaşılmasına yönelik tefsirlerdir. Müstakil tefsir yazma faaliyeti ise bir sonraki döneme tekabül etmektedir. 2 Hz. Peygamber'in Kur'an'ı âyet âyet tefsir etmesi günümüz konulu tefsirin başlangıcı, sahabe dönemi de bu anlayışın devamı kabul edilmektedir. 3 Günümüz Tefsir araştırmaları içerisinde önemli bir yer tutan "Konulu Tefsir" faaliyetleri, alanında müstakil olarak kaleme alınan eserlerin çoğunda konulu tefsir; "konu tefsiri (Kur'an'ın tamamından bir konunun tefsir edilmesi), sûre bütünlüğünü esas alan tefsir, kelime ve kavram tefsiri" olmak üzere üçe ayrılır. 4 Âyet tefsirleri, son dönem kaleme alınan bazı eserlerde "Âyet Çerçeveli Konulu Tefsir" başlığıyla, konulu tefsir alanındaki eserlerde zikredilmiştir. 5

Kastamonu Yazma Eser Kütüphanesi 417/2 nu.da kayıtlı vr. 89 b-146 b arasında yer alan Tefsîru Âyet el-Kursî 3 isimli eserin müellifi bilinmemektedir. 4 Esere isim olarak verilen "Tefsîru Âyet el-Kursî" ibaresi, eserlerde ismi yer almayan risalelerin aksine bu eserde 90 a'da yer almaktadır. Eserde sayfa numaraları mevcut olmadığından katalog verilerinde bize sunulan vr. 89 b-146 b sayfa numaralarından hareketle 89 b'den başlamayı uygun bulduk. Eserdeki yazım farklarından müstensihlerin birkaç defa değiştiği de anlaşılmaktadır. Eserin elimizde resim olarak mevcut son sayfası olan 147 a'nın son sayfa olup olmadığı anlaşılmamaktadır. Katalog verilerinde 146 b son sayfa olarak belirtilmiş ise de elimizde mevcut 147 a'da da ayetin tefsirine dair bilgiler devam etmektedir.

Osmanlı tefsir geleneği içerisinde önemli bir yer tutan müstakil ayet tefsirlerinin her biri tek tek incelenmeye ve araĢtırmaya değer niteliktedir. Bu alanda yapılacak çalıĢmalar Osmanlı tefsiri hakkında bizim açımızdan karanlıkta kalmıĢ olan ciddi bir ilmî birikimi ortaya çıkaracaktır. El yazması eserler kültürümüzün etkilerini takip etme açısından önemli birer ipucu niteliğindedir. Bu çalıĢmamızda Saraybosna Gazi Hüsrev Bey Kütüphanesinde bulunan 7167/2 nu.da kayıtlı Tefsîru Ayeti"l-Kursî ve R-2856/5 nu.da kayıtlı Terceme Ayeti"l-Kursî isimli eserler karĢılaĢtırılacaktır. Ayet tefsirleri kaleme alınırken genel anlamda klasik tefsir usulünde kullanılan usulün takip edildiğini müĢahede etmekteyiz. Buna göre, ayette yer alan kavramların anlaĢılması için filolojik tahliller yapılmaktadır. Burada modern bilimsel anlayıĢta olduğu gibi kaynak verme durumu çok azdır. Bazen kaynak olarak kullanılan eserlerin eser ismi ya da müellif isminin zikredildiği görülmektedir. Bu araĢtırmamızda Tefsîru Ayetil-Kursî isimli eser incelenecek ve bu eserin bilimsel değeri ile Tefsir ilmi açısından önemi ortaya konulmaya çalıĢılacaktır.

Manuscripts serve as an important lead to follow the traces of our culture. Each distinct verse description which has an important role in Ottoman tafsir tradition is worth to be examined and researched one by one. Studies in this field will reveal a significant accumulation of knowledge on Ottoman tafsir which was in the dark for us. This study will try to detect Turkish Culture Traces on the Balkans with the manuscript called Tefsîru Ayeti'l-Kursî registered as 7167/2 in Sarajevo Gazi Husrev Bey Library Manuscripts. We observe that classical tafsir method is generally followed when writing the description of verses. Therefore, philological analysis is examined to understand the terms in the verse. Contrary to modern scientific understanding, citing is rare in this field. It's observed that sometimes work title or the author name of the manuscript used as a source is cited. When expounding the verses, other Quran verses related to that topic are also referred. Besides, sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad (hadith) are commonly included to these tafsirs. It's also observed that narrative knowledge other than the verse and hadiths is cited. While there are people who pay attention to the accuracy and integrity of these narratives, there are also people who use weak narratives thinking that they are related to the topic. Narrative and sagacity methods which take place in classical tafsir method are also used with some differences. This research manuscript called Tefsîru Ayeti'l-Kursî will be examined and its scientific value and its importance in tafsir will be revealed.

This article explores the concept of the archipelago as a geographical reality and a figure of thought in relation to Yvonne Adhiambo Owuor's novel The Dragonfly Sea (2019). It demonstrates how the long history of maritime connections between Kenya and China are rendered narratively as both proximate and distant, connected yet separate. Owuor's novel is set in the Lamu archipelago in the Indian Ocean close to the northern coast of Kenya, to which it belongs. The narrative showcases Pate Island as a microcosm of archipelagic complexity, where cosmopolitan accommodation toward strangers coexists with conditions characterized by protective insularity and social strictures. An attentiveness to the environmental and geopolitical nature of the archipelago reveals the narrative's critique of China's (neo-)imperial pursuits in Kenya and its alternative social imaginaries that think Pate-as-world in order to foreground embedded, localized knowledge of environmental care for the island and its surrounding sea.

This article quantitatively examines women’s wealth in İstanbul in the first half of the 18th century, using inheritance records extracted from İstanbul Court Registers. This study aims to analyze the economic status of women and the factors influencing them based on wealth-related data. This study starts with a general assessment of the wealth distribution in İstanbul in the first half of the 18th century, followed by an interpretation of individual wealth by gender. The present study also tries to explain the gender wealth gap (GWG) by linking it to the sources of women’s wealth. Additionally, it attempts to profile wealthy women, examine their wealth sources and components, and assess the relationship between titles and wealth. In the present study, quantitative findings were interpreted statistically, supported by qualitative findings. In addition, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis H tests were applied to determine whether there is a statistically significant difference between gender-wealth, debt-wealth, and title-wealth variables. As a result, it is concluded that women’s limited sources of wealth accumulation play a crucial role in creating a gender wealth gap between women and men in highwealth groups; the level of borrowing by gender influences the difference in the gender wealth gap between total and net wealth, and a significant relationship exists between women’s title and their wealth.
