English Relationship between mothers' narcissism and the temperament of their children

An increase in narcissism has been reported by experts over the years. Narcissists bring a lot of negative consequences to themselves and to the people around them. This study investigates that perceived parenting leads to the development of inflated, unstable self-concept. The inflated self-concept lays the framework for the development of narcissistic traits among individuals; perceived parenting affects this relationship. A sample of 628 adults was taken from North Cyprus through purposive sampling. Scales for perceived parenting, self-concept, and narcissism were administered. Results showed that the statistically significant variance in the self-concept is explained by perceived parenting. Both mothers and fathers contributed significantly to the development of inflated self-concept. Moreover, multiple linear regression results showed a higher significant variance in narcissistic traits due to self-concept compared with perceived parenting. Mediational tests also showed that high levels of narcissistic traits were indirectly related to self-concept through perceived parenting. The study findings have challenged the notion of only mothers being responsible for narcissistic traits among their children. The study results also suggest that targeting self-concept in individuals with narcissistic traits may be a good directive for therapeutic interventions.

Background Elevated narcissism in young people often sets up a cascade of interpersonal and mental health challenges, reinforcing the need to understand its concomitants. The hypothesis that parental narcissism is related to depression and anxiety of the young adult children and that this relationship is mediated by the parental rearing style as reported by the offspring was investigated. Subjects were 409 young adults (264 females), aged 22.85 (SD = 2.00) and their parents. One of the prevailing characteristics of new generations, especially Gen Me, has been the increase in self esteem and in narcissistic traits in their personality. The focus, compared to previous generations, has been transferred from others to the self. The attitudes and the skills of new generations have been affected, as a result. This study explores the differences, regarding the narcissistic behavior between university students of today and their parents, in Greece. The findings suggest significant differences in narcissism between different age groups.

This research's focus was to develop and validate "The Early Life Dynamics and Narcissism Scale" (ELDNS). A culturally sensitive therapeutic screening tool, designed to identify impacts of early life dynamics and parenting styles on Narcissistic tendencies in men. The study was done in five phases that included semi structured interviews leading to a preliminary set of 29 items refined by expert evaluation, followed by a pilot study, explanatory factor analysis and psychometric testing of the scale. Factor analysis identified two principal factors: "Childhood familial dynamics and adverse experiences "and "Parental influence and emotional outcomes". The scale exhibited good internal consistency and temporal stability. Moreover, evaluations of convergent and divergent validity demonstrated the scale's precision. This tool would have great clinical implications. More research should be conducted to explore if this scale is applicable in the different cultural settings to enhance the robustness of the scale.

Narcissism is a dynamic form of personality characterized by a pervasive sense of grandiosity and self-importance, and by a need to obtain continuous self-validation from others. Very little is known about its etiology and development. What factors (e.g., temperament, parenting experiences) and processes (e.g., transactions between these factors over time) cause some children to become more narcissistic than others? When does narcissism first emerge, and how does narcissism develop over time? This article describes a framework for research on the etiology and development of narcissism, and recommends ten research priorities. This research should yield fundamental knowledge and should inform intervention efforts to minimize the negative impact narcissistic individuals have on themselves and on others.

This prospective study examined relations between preschool personality attributes and narcissism during adolescence and emerging adulthood. We created five a priori preschool scales anticipated to foretell future narcissism. Independent assessors evaluated the participants' personality at ages 14, 18, and 23. Based upon these evaluations, we generated observer-based narcissism scales for each of these three ages. All preschool scales predicted subsequent narcissism, except Interpersonal Antagonism at age 23. According to mean scale and item scores analyses, narcissism increased significantly from age 14 to 18, followed by a slight but non-significant decline from age 18 to 23. The discussion focused on a developmental view of narcissism, the need for research on automatic processing and psychological defenses, and links between narcissism and attachment.

Abstract. The present study was conducted with the aim of constructing and validating a short form of the Narcissistic Personality Inventory (NPI). The NPI is the most widely-applied measure for the assessment of narcissistic personality traits and, therefore, it is of great relevance for many research questions in personality and social psychology. To develop the short scale, we first found the optimal eight-item solution among all valid combinations of the NPI-15 items in an exploratory subsample (n = 1, 165) of our complete representative sample of the German general population. We then validated this model in a confirmatory subsample (n = 1, 126). Additionally, we examined its invariance across age groups and sex, as well as its reliability, as well as construct and predictive validity -comparing it to the NPI-15.
