On the occasion of the reorganization of deposit four of The History Museum of Roman, a wooden box was found. This contained fragments of a jar-type vessel decorated with a fluted belt and several other small pieces (knife blade, beads). After the vessel was restored, it was noted that it was deviated from the manufacture and showed signs of secondary combustion. The marking on the wooden box indicates a possible cremation urn, which may be part of the necropolis of the free Dacians from Dămienești, - La Tomiță, archaeologically researched in 1976.

The paper offers a new example of the so called «coppia contigua» in Hesychius’ Lexicon, one of the most important Greek dictionary to survive from antiquity. The lemma α 2891 (ἅλες ἄφθονοι), corrupted in the transmission of text, is addendum to test. 103 Kassel – Austin on Menander: in fact ἅλες ἄφθονοι plays on the image of Menander’s ‘salt’ compared to the salt of the sea from which Aphrodite was born, according to Plu. Mor. 853a-854d.

This study presents the findings of the 2024 geophysical prospection campaign conducted within the southwestern Lower City of the Hellenistic capital Artaxata, situated in the Ararat plain, Armenia. Using advanced magnetic survey techniques, we sought to investigate the urban layout and expansion of the ancient city. The campaign aimed to test hypotheses derived from aerial imagery regarding the existence of city walls in this area, a previously undocumented feature for the Lower City. Spanning approximately 20 ha, the survey revealed an array of archaeological features, including wall structures, ditches, and pits, alongside evidence of domestic and craft activities such as fireplaces. Notably, the findings confirmed the presence of the southwestern city walls, delineating a settlement area larger than previously known. Additional discoveries include monumental architectural remains, such as an octagonal structure potentially associated with an early Christian church. However, the interpretation of these structures, including their chronology and function, remains tentative pending further excavation. These results not only extend our understanding of the city's urban development but also highlight the efficacy of integrating geophysical surveys with archaeological methods in reconstructing historical urban landscapes. Future investigations will focus on resolving ambiguities through targeted excavation and refining interpretations of the magnetic anomalies observed.

Η Αγία Ειρήνη είναι ένα σημαντικό αιγαιακό λιμάνι που θεωρείται η πύλη των Κυκλάδων και του νοτιότερου Αιγαίου προς το μεταλλοφόρο Λαύριο. Υπήρχε, όμως, η λανθασμένη εντύπωση ότι ήταν το μοναδικό κέντρο τόσο στο ίδιο το νησί της Κέας όσο και στην ευρύτερη περιοχή των βορείων Κυκλάδων. Η επισήμανση ενός δεύτερου πρώιμου μεσοκυκλαδικού οικισμού στην Καρθαία της Κέας σύγχρονου με τις πρώιμες φάσεις της Αγίας Ειρήνης της περιόδου IV (Μεσομινωική ΙΙ Α/ Μεσοελλαδική ΙΙ περίοδος), στη νοτιοανατολική παραλία του νησιού κατά την ανασκαφή του θεάτρου της αρχαίας πόλης από την Εύα Σημαντώνη-Μπουρνιά και την Τάνια Πανάγου από το 2011 και μετά κατέρριψε την έως τότε επικρατούσα άποψη. Το 2010 επισημάνθηκε επίσης η επιβλητική προϊστορική ακρόπολη της Παναγίας  Αντιλαλούσας στη Γυάρο, του βόρειου νησιού των Κυκλάδων που βρίσκεται δίπλα στην Κέα. Η Αντιλαλούσα φαίνεται να είναι αντίστοιχης χρονολόγησης και να διαθέτει παρόμοιο ευρύ πλέγμα σχέσεων με την Αγία Ειρήνη της πρώιμης περιόδου ΙV και την Καρθαία της Κέας.
Οι ανακαλύψεις αυτές δεν αφήνουν πλέον αμφιβολία ότι το οικιστικό δίκτυο στις βόρειες εσχατιές του κυκλαδικού νησιωτικού συμπλέγματος και ο ρόλος που αυτό έπαιζε στις θαλάσσιες επικοινωνίες και το εμπόριο της εποχής στα πρώτα στάδια της Μέσης Εποχής του Χαλκού ήταν πολύ πιο σύνθετα από εκείνα που μπορούσε κανείς να υποθέσει έως και τις αρχές της δεκαετίας του 2000.

This is a PPT of an online lecture that took place at an international conference on Roman and Byantine bone objects on 14th of May, 2025 on Zoom. In this brief contribution several previously unpublished or less-known Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Post-Medieval bone and mother-of-pearl objects and their depictions from Turkish museums are analysed. These finds are ranging from the third century BC to the Late Ottoman period, and most of them are of funerary character.

Recent studies on religion and democracy in Classical Athens (e.g.,
Jameson 2014; Canevaro and Gray 2018; Petridou 2021) have argued that
an unmistakable two-directional relationship between religious life and
political action religion is obvious in every sphere of socio-political and
economic activity (education, healthcare, law-making, law enforcement,
etc.) and on every level of societal organisation in the city (from the individual to the household, and from the professional and cultic associations to the city-state as a whole). This chapter engages closely with recent socio-anthropological perspectives and looks afresh at the symbolic polyvalence of the epiphanic procession that led the exiled tyrannos Peisistratus back to Athens in the 550s BC (Hdt. 1.60.2–5) as an example of such unmistakably two-directional relationship between religious life and political action. Effectively, the present study joins forces with the other contributors of this volume to discuss the careful ritual construction and signification of that procession, and the means it employed to create a climate of political cohesion and celebration in the community.

The aim of this research is to define a multidisciplinary method capable of enhancing the tangible and intangible values of the historical-cultural heritage through the virtual reconstruction of the ancient internal flame lighting systems. The survey by laser scanner and/or by digital photogrammetry and solid modelling were the techniques used to carry out the three-dimensional reconstructions of the artefacts. The 3D model based on archaeological and historical documentation made it possible to define the lighting scenarios according to various historical-interpretative hypotheses and the reconstruction of the used luminaires. Instead, the laboratory experiments on the flame allowed obtaining the scientific reference parameters to be used in the virtual reconstruction of the lighting scenarios. This method was validated in two different case studies. The first is a cave church in Matera, a medieval religious building built entirely in the ravine with evident architectural signs that enabled to identify the ancient lighting systems. The second is a Roman villa in Mola di Bari, a devastated archaeological site among which several Roman lamps were found, thanks to which it was possible to start the study of light. In addition to making an important contribution to the community of scholars, the lighting scenarios obtained from the research also aim to enhance the architectural artefacts and promote the related history knowledge for future generations. Virtual reality, augmented reality and online 3d visualization can be some of the possible applications towards which this research can converge to promote the fruition of cultural heritage.

In this study, an eagle figurine from Burdur Museum will be examined. It was purchased by the museum authorities in 1975 and recorded in the museum inventory. The figurine is made of silver alloy. It was produced with mold technique. In addition, wire, granulation and engraving technique were used. It was defined as a gold medallion eagle figurine due to the gold ornamentation on it. The eagle figurines are one of the leading artifacts of art of the Roman Empire.They were theologically accepted with various mystical rituals and ideologically became the symbol of political and military power. Their purposes of use changed accordingly and they were used as cult objects, military symbols, grave gifts, furniture and ornaments or accessories belonging to an object. Findings such as melted metal residue and solder marks indicating that the Burdur Museum example was belongs to an object indicate that the figurine is part of an object. The twisted square gold wire wrapping the body of the figurine like an ornament, the serpent soldered to the gold wire on the chest and the ram figure between its claws are the most important defining characteristics that distinguish our work from existing eagle figurines. At the same time, this figurine is a rare example where eagle-serpent-ram figures are defined as a group of works and form a common composition. Another distinguishing feature is that the eagle figurine is made of silver alloy and decorated with gold alloy ornaments. The stylistic and technical features of the figurine provide a historical standard for displaying the craftsmanship of the Hellenistic and Roman Imperial Period. This study initially gives information regarding the defining, technical and iconographic features of the figurine. Secondly, a proposal for its date is presented by an analogical and typological assessment utilizing comparative examples of the figurine.

This is a bibliographical list of the bone object finds in Anatolia until the year 2015 where all field reports concerning the worked bone finds from Asia Minor between the fourth century BC and seventh century AD were collected. Although a large number of bone objects has been found in excavations and is preserved in museums in Turkey, research concerning them has so far been limited. Only few Greek, Roman and Byzantine bone objects from, among others (in an alphabetical order) Ephesus, Sagalassus and Smyrna as well as museum collections have been thoroughly studied and published. Otherwise, there is little else than brief notes on scattered examples discovered during excavations, field surveys and rescue operations in various parts of Turkey reported in four archaeological periodicals, mostly without any illustration or detailed information (see Table 1 below). In these preliminary studies some of the bone objects have been dated erroneously, their association with grave goods was not reported, and so far no typology has been established. In addition, the issues related to their function, production, distribution and chronology have not been taken sufficiently into account. A comprehensive study covering all the finds of bone objects in Anatolia has not been carried out, and very little archaeometric research have been undertaken.
In this bibliographical study, the data concerning the Greek, Roman and Byzantine worked bone finds from excavations, field surveys and rescue excavations in Turkey were obtained from four Turkish periodicals (Table 1) which are the official annual reports of the General Directorate of Monuments and Museums, a subdivision belonging to the Turkish Ministery of Culture and Tourism. These periodicals are ‘Kazı Sonuçları Toplantıları’ (Turkish annual meetings for the results of excavations) from 1979 to the present, ‘Araştırma Sonuçları Toplantıları’ (Turkish annual meetings for the results of archaeological field surveys) from 1983 to the present, and ‘Müze Çalışmaları ve Kurtarma Kazıları Sempozyumu’ (Turkish annual meetings for the results of museum work and rescue excavations; see ‘Abbreviations’ below) from 1990 and 2001 to the present, all three of which are available online on the website of the Turkish General Directorate of Monuments and Museums.
The object of this bibliographical corpus is to compile all the find evidence for this material group in one Mediterranean landscape and to create a base for future research. The list consists of the find spots of each find, their find year, context, number, typologies and finally dating according to their publishers. A find number for each find is given in the left-hand column. Each bibliographical entry is accompanied by an acronymous reference at the end.

The question of status within the Mycenaean funeral has long been dominated by our understanding of the palatial system as it appears in the Linear B tablets. The elaboration of grave goods during the Early Mycenaean Period has been read as proof of social stratification that led to the development of the palatial system, just as the decline in the quantity and variety of grave goods in LHIIIA has been taken as evidence of palatial control. Though these approaches have provided valuable insights into how objects conferred status, little attention has been paid to the ways in which the embodied actions of the performers participated in status-making and how this process could operate outside the palatial system. Using examples from cemeteries in the Argolid and Corinthia, this paper draws on scholarship within Performance Studies, and in particular Diana Taylor's now seminal work on the archive and repertoire, to cultivate a theoretical framework that reconsiders the role of embodied action in the funeral and the ways in which it offers bottom-up perspectives of Mycenaean society. From this analysis I argue that performance not only played a central role in negotiating the status of the deceased and the community of mourners, but that this process was not necessarily "palatial." Though embodied action could work in tandem with material culture to establish and transmit social knowledge such as status, the ephemeral nature of performance meant it was harder to control and more susceptible to change. Therefore, the funeral offered mourners the opportunity to take an active role in shaping status and meaning within Mycenaean society that could not be fully regulated by the palace. In this way, performance theory offers methodological tools to decenter the palace and consider alternative perspectives for how status and meaning were communicated in Mycenaean society.

The Etruscan were peoples present in Italy, between Tuscany and the Latium, during the Bronze Age until the Roman conquest around 4 to 3 BCE. They are known to us mostly through archeological findings, since we cannot understand their language although we can read it. Their main cities like Chuisi and Populonia leave us traces of their burials and their exploitation of the resources around them. We notice their hierarchical organisation notably through the very detailed inhumation in tumulus that high up members of their society received. We also know through paintings in their tombs that the Etruscans had a developed mythology around death and traveling through the underworld, highly influenced by and mixed with Greek mythology. Some ancient authors believed that the Etruscans were the product of Greek immigration to the Italian peninsula. Although they were heavily influenced by Greek folklore, the Etruscans are indigenous to Etruria, they are descendants of Villanovians. According to Emma Blake the Etruscans are a result of the peoples that used to exchange with the Terramare culture but survived its collapse during the final Bronze age. DNA analysis is to this day trying to determine precisely the origins of the Etruscan peoples, and though they may remain one of the most mysterious peoples of ancient Italy we know that they came to exist in the very same territory they occupied. One of the most important archeologic finds ever made in an etruscan necropolis is the François vase, a krater made to mix wine and water. This vase is made special by the 130 inscriptions in Greek as well as the numerous mythological scenes decorating it. The main one being of the wedding procession of Thetis and Pele, Achilles' parents. We also know the name of the potter and painter of the krater, who signed their work from the perspective of the vase itself. And it is indeed a work worth claiming, today considered the "Holy Bible" of Greek mythology. It highlights just how prized Greek pottery was by Etruscans and gives us tools to recognise how Greek mythology was incorporated in Etruscan tomb paintings.

The project ‘Phase A of the restoration of the ancient theatre of Sparta’ is being implemented since 2019 by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia, with funding by the American foundation J. M. Kaplan Fund. It comprises the first part of the study for the monument’s restoration and includes work for its immediate protection and partial restoration of important and unsafe parts, such as drainage work, urgent rescue and archaeological work, repositioning of architectural members, and additional mapping of the monument. The work carried out in the ancient theatre (2019–2021) revealed parts of the theatre that had been previously investigated, but also new and extremely interesting data. In addition to contributing to the documentation of the theatre’s construction history and protection, the project yielded invaluable information on the history of research at the site, on past work for its protection, and on its effectiveness. Following the inclusion of the project ‘Restoration of the ancient theatre of Sparta’ in the NSRF 2014–2020 in 2020, the project ‘Phase A of the restoration of the
ancient theatre of Sparta’ is expected to contribute decisively to the monument’s preservation through the identification and protection of the underlying antiquities in areas where infrastructures will be installed, as well as through works for the protection of unsafe parts.

Monuments and archaeological sites in Greece have over time emerged as national symbols and been promoted for purposes directly linked to the country’s growth, foreign policy, economy, and tourism. In this context, in the second half of the 20th and early 21st century, the major archaeological sites of the Peloponnese (Olympia, Mycenae, Epidaurus, Messene, etc.) were systematically taken care of by the state, upgraded, and enhanced. As a result, they contributed to local and national economic development, to the international promotion of the country, and to the shaping of local identities. A special case is that of Sparta, which, despite the positive prospects and contrary to collective expectations, acquired its first organized and accessible archaeological sites only within the last decades. Given the economic and social dimension of the promotion and management of archaeological heritage and the two-way relationship between antiquities and citizens2, this article focuses on the parameters that determine the treatment of archaeological remains and examines the extent to which their restoration defines the identity, development, and distinct features of a place and its inhabitants.

The NSRF 2007-2013 project entitled “Protection, configuration, enhancement and connection of the archaeological sites of ancient Sparta” was implemented from 2011 to 2015, initially by the former 5th
Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities, and from 2014 until its completion, by the Ephorate of Antiquities of Laconia. In the project’s course works and interventions were carried out at the archaeological
site of ancient Sparta’s acropolis and its monuments. The Acropolis, together with the Agora, constituted the political, administrative and religious centre of the Classical and Roman city and of the Early Christian Lacedaemon. The implementation of the project contributed to the protection and promotion of the antiquities and to the increase of their educational and cultural value. As a result, the archaeological site has become a living part of the everyday life of the region and a pole of attraction for visitors.

Since its discovery, the monument of Psychiko was considered to be of great importance for the topography of ancient Sparta. Its monumental and unique character led to the identification with monuments of the Hellenistic or earlier times mentioned by the travel writer Pausanias. The work carried out for the protection and enhancement of the site provided new and interesting evidence, which, combined with the results of the old excavation, led to the
conclusion that the Psychiko monument is an impressive funerary building of the Roman period.

One of the most prominent and important statesmen in modern Greek history, Eleutherios Venizelos full-heartedly favored Greek participation in World War I on the side of the Entente. This caused tension with King Constantine I, who favored neutrality. Venizelos finally succeeded in his goal in 1917, when Greece officially joined the Entente alliance.

The city of Panopeus (aka Phanoteus) in Phokis, reputed in imperial times to be indigent according to the famous passage by Pausanias – which however still requires commentary –, can now be better understood thanks to recent advances in its archaeological and epigraphical exploration. These advances show in particular two breaks at the threshhold and towards the end of the Classical period, respectively in connection with the Persian invasion of 480 BC and the 3rd Sacred War (356-346 BC). Among the Phokian cities in Hellenistic times, Panopeus undoubtedly remained an average city, whose life is made manifest by two new inscriptions, a dedication to Herakles and an erotic text.

The return to the chronology of the Horodca Mica fortification was determined by the insufficiency of data that would allow to understand the evolutionary stages of this site. The results obtained previously, based on the stratigraphic analysis of the defensive system, allowed the delimitation of four stages of fortification/refortification of the promontory. The use of data resulting from the analysis of the amphoric material, combined with the use of radiocarbon methods and calibration modeling, provided conclusive data to understand the functioning of the site. However, no data were obtained for the four building phases of the fortification. In search of answers, new samples were taken for the 14C analysis, whose data were included in the complete analysis of the chronological landmarks of the site, which we will also present, with particular regard to the chronology of the defensive system.

This article examines the funerary landscape of Roman Sparta, giving a detailed overview of the latest archaeological research concerning the organized cemeteries in the southern part of the city, as well as the monumental funerary buildings at Sparta’s periphery. Furthermore, it presents the archaeological data from a recent excavation conducted
at the Karavassos plot (in Sparta’s BB 155), where a new funerary construction of monumental dimensions came to light. The
author discusses some topographical issues concerning the Karavassos funerary monument in relation to the city’s Hellenistic fortification wall and the location of the fortification wall’s South Gate. Its relation both to the most important road of ancient Sparta, the Aphetais Road, as well to the Hyakinthis road, leading from Sparta to Amyklai and the Sanctuary
of Apollo, is then examined.

Since 2021, an archaeological survey has been underway in the plain linking Amarynthos and Eretria (Euboea, Greece), a region continuously occupied but now threatened by wildfires, looting, and especially urbanization. The aim is to produce a comprehensive archaeological map to trace the evolution of human occupation. In this context, the mobile application ArcGIS Survey123 has proven to be a key tool, facilitating structured, collaborative data collection, directly recorded in the field by the survey teams.

In this article the data of B. Petrunova’s research on
the upper city of the Kaliakra fortress from the year 2010 to 2013 are
summarized. At the beginning of her research, at a distance of 22 m
northwest from Church № 1, Church № 2 was discovered, dedicated
to the Holy Mother of God (Theotokos).
The excavations of Church № 2 (“Holy Mother of God”) was
conducted successively in four seasons from 2010 to 2013. During
that time 191 graves were recorded and the number of human
remains did not correspond to the number of graves, with the remains
comprising at least twice the number of individuals as the number
of graves. The original field documentation includes a catalogue of
over 100 graves with quite-well preserved skeletons.
The necropolis of Church № 2 consists mainly of graves
belonging to the Christian population who inhabited the town during
that period. This claim is supported by both the historical data from
the capital Kaliakra of the Despotate of Dobrudzha, and the artefacts
that were found inside the graves and around them. They are very
characteristic for the Bulgarian Middle Ages, especially in the big
city centres of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom such as Tarnovgrad,
Cherven, and Preslav, amongst others.

Ekim Devrimi (1917) ve hemen sonrasında yaşanan iç savaşın ardından (1918-1922) İstanbul, Rusya İmparatorluğu'nu terk eden çok sayıda göçmen sanatçıya ev sahipliği yapar. 2 Bu sanatçılardan biri olan ressam ve fotoğrafçı Vladimir Zender (1885-1944), 1918 yılında eşi Renate ve oğlu Valentin ile birlikte İstanbul'a göç eder ve Pera bölgesinde Foto Sender adlı bir fotoğraf stüdyosu açar. Geç Osmanlı ve erken Cumhuriyet dönemine tanıklık eden Zender, Türkiye'de kent ve mimari fotoğraflarıyla dikkat çeker.

With the help and through the lens of underestimated bibliography and unpublished archival documentation, we will analyze some of the main stages in the biography and career of the Umbrian “engineer/topographer” Raniero Mengarelli (1863-1944) who seemed most significant in the process of building the baggage of advanced skills that in his mature years enabled him to work so fruitfully in Cerveteri and in general in the area entrusted to his care.

El  nuevo  corpus  de  inscripciones  oraculares  de  Dodona  ha  suscitado  un  interés  renovado  en  el  santuario.  En  este  marco, son varios los estudiosos que han llamado la atención sobre  la  necesidad  de  revisar  la  creencia  establecida  sobre  la  importancia  del  agua  en  Dodona,  si  bien  hasta  el  momento  no  se  ha  realizado  un  análisis  completo  de  todos los testimonios, tanto literarios como epigráficos y arqueológicos, que es precisamente el objetivo del presente trabajo.  Como  demuestra  el  estudio  contrastado  de  la  información aportada por los distintos tipos de fuentes, y en especial los nuevos datos sobre el oráculo que han revelado las laminillas oraculares, no hay pruebas concluyentes que permitan confirmar que el agua tuviera un papel relevante en el culto o en la práctica oracular.

The present volume originates in the Graduate Archaeology at Oxford Conference, an annual event for graduate students and early career researchers to present their archaeological research. The 2023 conference, titled “H2Oxford: Water Flowing Through Archaeology”, focussed on water's role in human interactions and its archaeological remnants. This volume explores the pivotal role of water in human history and its archaeological significance, bringing together diverse contributions that reflect the breadth of contemporary research. Covering a wide range of topics —including maritime archaeology, water management, material culture, landscape archaeology, and theoretical approaches— it examines water’s influence on human interactions and its material traces across geographical and chronological contexts.

The study of ancient society in the classical world has traditionally focused on the urban elites or the male citizens, and has neglected the women, the children or adolescents, the old people, the disabled or sick, the enslaved and criminals, the foreign residents. This workshop aims to address this problem by tackling the topics of women and children (with a plan to have future workshops on the other groups). While the situation is rapidly changing, with these groups receiving increasing attention, these discussions remain restricted to historical or literary evidence. However, in recent years, mortuary archaeology (the study of mortuary practices) and bioarchaeology (the study of human remains, and associated analytical techniques such as ancient DNA and biodistance analysis to establish genetic relations, or isotopic analyses to reconstruct diet or provenance) produce fascinating insights into the life and death of precisely these neglected categories. These new insights have not been incorporated so far into historical reflection on these ‘silenced groups’. Classicists and ancient historians make little use of (bio)archaeological information, while (bio)archaeologists are not always familiar with the complexities of the ancient world, or ignore the potential of texts, epigraphy, or imagery. As a result, the different disciplines hardly interact with each other, at a time when new questions are being asked and new methods introduced. This workshop is an opportunity to bring together scholars from across the disciplines studying the ancient world, bridging the gap between these diverse disciplines and between the humanities and the sciences.

Il s'agit de la ville de l'Hispanie citérieure plus mentionnée par les auteurs classiques. La deuxième guerre punique (218-202 av.n.è.) l'a fait entrer dans la liste des gloires de Rome. Le développement urbain de Sagonte et de son Grau Vell fait connaître quelque chose de différent. C'est vers 150 a.n.è. lorsque des changements liés au commerce maritime sont observés. La circulation du vin coïncide avec l'apparition de sanctuaires dédiés aux dieux du vin. L'Italie archaïque et républicaine est un foyer d'échanges foisonnants. Entre les colonies grecques du littoral méridional de la péninsule, les peuples oscophones de sa dorsale montagneuse, les cités étrusques de ses plaines septentrionales, et le monde romain en expansion continue depuis l'Italie centrale, les flux sont intenses et continus. Les échanges marchands se doublent de la circulation de modèles sociaux, de pratiques, de cultes, de rites… Les offrandes miniatures, retrouvés en grand nombre dans les sanctuaires de l'Italie préromaine, constituent un cas d'étude très intéressant de ces circulations. En effet, à partir du VIIIe siècle av. J.-C., les colons grecs ont amené depuis leurs métropoles balkaniques et micrasiatiques des pratiques de miniaturisation de la vaisselle religieuse, des armes et des armures ; celles-ci ont continué à évoluer en Italie et leurs formes ont dans certains cas été reprises par les populations italiques. Mais le courant hellénique de miniaturisation rituelle a aussi rencontré en Italie une tradition locale préexistante, puisqu'à la Protohistoire déjà on déposait des vases miniatures dans les lieux de culte d'Italie. Dans les zones où les contacts et les influences mutuelles entre Grecs et indigènes ont été les plus fortes, notamment en Lucanie, il n'est pas toujours facile de faire la part des choses entre les traditions indigènes, les pratiques importées et l'adaptation de ces pratiques exogènes aux nécessités locales. En s'intéressant à quelques cas d'étude en Italie du Sud, on cherchera dans cette communication à explorer la circulation de la pratique de la miniaturisation rituelle entre les peuples de l'Italie archaïque et républicaine.

The Greek island of Samothrace, located in the northern Aegean Sea, has been continuously inhabited since about 5500 BC. Samothracian builders, however, imported non-biodegradable building materials in large quantities only during two historical periods, the first during the early Hellenistic period (c. 350–150 BC) and the second during the modern period (c. 1970–2021). Samothrace’s insularity limits the flow of materials: it increases the cost of imports, prevents most waste exports and limits options for local waste management and recycling. The artificial harbors, which were built on the island in antiquity and in the 20th century, have significantly changed the building and reuse patterns on the island. A broad historical outline of building on Samothrace, comparing the last 5000 and 100 years, draws attention to the secondary uses of building materials. By quantifying ancient imports of marble and modern imports of concrete, brick, asphalt, steel and plastics, it is possible to compare the scale of the imprint these materials leave on the landscape. A point of alignment between the historical data collected from archaeological excavations and the modern statistics produced by Sociometabolic Research reveals a striking contrast: the estimated average amount of construction and demolition waste produced each year in Samothrace today (10,000 tones) is roughly equal to the total estimate of all marble imported to the island for construction purposes in antiquity.

Binlerce yıllık geçmişi içinde pek çok uygarlığın iç içe veya yan yana yaşadığı Smyrna'yı, benzer antik kentler arasında farklı ve ayrıcalıklı kılan; en önemli ve eşsiz özelliği bu yerlerde bulunmayan tarihsel, kültürel ve arkeolojik mirasının zenginliği olmalıdır. Kent kültürünün en başta gelen ilkelerinden biride, kentin tarihi mirasına sahip çıkmak, korumak ve yapılarına uygun birer fonksiyon kazandırılarak kent için çok yönlü katkılarını sağlamaktır.

La storica e antropologa Paola Trevisan ha intervistato diversi membri della comunità sinta che è oggi stanziata a Reggio Emilia, Modena e Bologna. Poiché queste interviste sono state registrate, offrono una preziosa testimonianza sulla lingua di questa comunità, che i parlanti stessi chiamano sinto (cfr. per esempio «dobbiamo parlarle in sinto»). A differenza di quanto sembrerebbe suggerire il glottonimo, questa varietà non appartiene alla romaní, cioè all’insieme di idiomi di base indo-aria parlati dai rom e dai sinti italiani, ma è un dialetto puramente italo-romanzo. Nonostante che i membri di questa comunità si trovino stanziati in Emilia da decenni, il loro dialetto non è affatto emiliano ma veneto: rimanda a una zona compresa tra Mantova, Ferrara e Verona. Si tratta quindi di un nuovo caso - fin ora non noto - di eteroglossia interna (Telmon 1992). Nella presentazione si darà qualche ragguaglio storico e linguistico su questa varietà e si proporrà una nuova etimologia (diversa da quella di Janda 1995) per uno dei suoi fenomeni più caratterizzanti: le forme di 1pl in -no (cantàvino 'cantavàmo')

It is argued that the painting in the Stoa Poikile described by Pausanias as an engagement between Athenians and Spartans at Argive Oenoe in fact refers to Oenoe in Attica, and depicted the arrival of the Plataean contingent prior to the battle of Marathon. The dependence of Herodotus on the paintings in the Stoa Poikile for his account of Marathon is discussed.

Αντικείμενο της παρούσας ανακοίνωσης υπήρξαν τα αποτελέσματα μιας σωστικής ανασκαφικής έρευνας της 25ης Εφορείας Βυζαντινών Αρχαιοτήτων που έφερε στο φως ένα νέο τμήμα του πρωτοβυζαντινού βόρειου νεκροταφείου του Άργους. Στο βόρειο τμήμα αποκαλύφθηκε ένας ταφικός θάλαμος με τουλάχιστον δέκα κιβωτιόσχημους τάφους και μία προέκταση στα νοτιοανατολικά με δύο επιπλέον τάφους. Στο νότιο τμήμα της ανασκαφής και σε χαμηλότερο βάθος βρέθηκε τμήμα ενός δεύτερου ταφικού θαλάμου επίσης με κιβωτιόσχημους τάφους, ενώ μεταξύ των δύο ταφικών θαλάμων αποκαλύφθηκαν οκτώ καλυβίτες και ένας κεραμοσκεπής τάφος. Η πλειονότητα των ευρημάτων προήλθε από τον βόρειο ταφικό θάλαμο και αποτελείται κυρίως από μικρές ληκύθους και λυχνάρια. Το αποκαλυφθέν τμήμα του νεκροταφείου θα μπορούσε να χρονολογηθεί, βάσει των κινητών του ευρημάτων, στον 5ο και κυρίως στον 6ο-πρώιμο 7ο αιώνα. Σημαντικό εύρημα για την τοπογραφία του νεκροταφείου υπήρξε ο τοίχος 5 που φαίνεται ότι αποτελούσε τμήμα του ανατολικού περιβόλου του βόρειου νεκροταφείου.
