Latin Epigraphy

Nos enfrentamos a una obra monográfica, más que una biografía, sobre uno de los personajes más importantes de la historia de Roma: Escipión Emiliano. A través de su figura, Manuel Salinas consigue imbuir al lector en los aspectos políticos, históricos, artísticos y literarios de la Roma del siglo II a.C. Para ello, el autor dedica un amplio esfuerzo en explicar el contexto histórico, la mentalidad, la estructura social, así como la jerarquía política y militar del periodo. La lectura de Escipión Emiliano. Destructor de Cartago, conquistador de Numancia permite, de este modo, comprender muchos aspectos históricos de la Roma anterior, contemporánea y posterior a la época de Emiliano. En ciertos aspectos, el libro podría considerarse un manual de historia de la Roma republicana, lo que probablemente deriva de la trayectoria docente universitaria del autor. En la introducción, se señalan las fuentes históricas principales para abordar la figura de Escipión Emiliano, fundamentalmente la obra de Polibio, Apiano, Plutarco, Cicerón, Valerio Máximo y Aulo Gelio. No es de sorprender que, como catedrático emérito de Historia Antigua, Manuel Salinas apoye su relato en un exhaustivo conocimiento y estudio de las fuentes históricas, lo que supone, sin duda, todo un privilegio a los lectores, ya que abundan por doquier publicaciones de carácter divulgativo nutridas exclusivamente de fuentes secundarias e incluso de fuentes de escaso valor académico. Sin embargo, hemos de apostillar que la meticulosa dependencia de las fuentes y la rigurosidad histórica puede resultar algo árida a lectores aficionados, ya que, en ocasiones, se ofrecen datos que no contribuyen a mejorar la comprensión del discurso y dificultan la fluidez argumental. A veces se dedican páginas a determinados aspectos que probablemente han sido relevantes en la trayectoria académica del autor, pero que quizás desvíen la atención del tema central de la obra:

El catàleg com a forma literària té els seus primers testimonis en l'èpica grega arcaica, on, mitjançant la interrupció del curs de la narració dels esdeveniments, tot sovint s'insereixen llistes d'elements, cadascun dels quals pot ser complementat o ampliat amb descripcions o comentaris. Aquesta forma poètica pot compilar ítems de tota mena: naus, guerrers, trofeus, esdeveniments... i dones, com es veu a l'episodi de la Νέκυια de l'Odissea (11, vs. 225-332), un passatge que té paral•lels en la poesia d'Hesíode i sembla fer-se ressò d'una tradició oral anterior a la consolidació dels poemes homèrics. Aquestes composicions poètiques sobre dones, que nasqueren en un context d'estricta oralitat, han resultat ésser d'allò més prolífiques, i actualment se'n pot resseguir la continuïtat en una tradició pràcticament ininterrompuda fins els nostres dies.

La chiesa monastica di San Nicolò del Lido rappresenta un luogo simbolico del rapporto tra Venezia e il mare, testimone di questa relazione in un arco cronologico che va dall'XI al XX secolo. Questo legame si esprime sia nella vita quotidiana sia, in forma cerimoniale, durante la festa della Sensa, che fin dall'XI secolo culminava in una funzione liturgica celebrata proprio nella chiesa. Le origini dell' edificio risalgono al 1053, quando fu fondato dal vescovo di Olivolo e dall' omonimo doge Domenico Contarini, in collaborazione con il patriarca di Grado Domenico Marengo. Secondo la tradizione, nel 1100-in seguito a un acceso dibattito tra le autorità religiose, politiche e civili-la chiesa, ormai parte integrante di un monastero benedettino, fu destinata ad accogliere le reliquie di San Nicola, di San Nicola zio, e di San Teodoro. L'ingresso del cenobio nella Congregazione di Santa Giustina, avvenuto nel 1451, segnò l'inizio di una graduale e sistematica trasformazione dell'intero complesso monastico. Tale processo portò allo smantellamento della chiesa medievale e alla costruzione di un nuovo edificio sacro tra il 1627 e il 1628. Una volta completata la nuova chiesa, le tracce della precedente vennero perdute, fino a quando, nel corso del XX secolo, una serie di scavi archeologici ha permesso di individuare l'area della primitiva chiesa di San Nicolò. Sono emerse porzioni delle strutture originarie, tra cui l'abside centrale e le due laterali, insieme a numerosi reperti, in particolare frammenti di mosaici parietali e pavimentali, oltre a elementi lapidei, dal 2021 in corso di manutenzione, restauro e valorizzazione da parte della Soprintendenza ABAP per Venezia e Laguna in convenzione con l'Istituto Veneto per i Beni Culturali. Nell'avvicinarmi alle iscrizioni relative a sacerdotesse in territorio sannita una delle prime evidenze che ho notato è quella relativa al sintagma sacerdos prima, che rientra nelle titolature di alcune donne di rango nell'Occidente romano dei primi secoli dell'era volgare. L'espressione in esame, per le epigrafi di origine italica, appare usata esclusivamente in iscrizioni provenienti dal Sannio (geograficamente inteso, e non secondo la ripartizione in regiones augustea) 1 . Nel quadro della ricerca connessa mi sono imbattuta segnatamente in un gruppo di iscrizioni beneventane, per lo più databili ad età severiana, e * Sono molto grata ad Alessio Guasco e all'amico di una vita Nello Parma per il coinvolgimento nel densissimo incontro su Samnium e Samnites. Il progetto di riedizione delle iscrizioni beneventane e lato sensu della regione sannita rappresenta un momento di grande importanza nell'ottica di una 'riscoperta' del Sannio romano e di una rinnovata valutazione delle peculiarità del territorio antico. Caratteri diversi ha l'importante iscrizione AE 1998, 461 (= EDR115421), da Interamnia Praetuttiorum, e assai più tarda delle precedenti (seconda metà II sec. d.C.) di Numisia Secunda Sabina, flaminica, della quale è detto Huìc prìmae omni[um] / pleps Praetuttiaṇ [a] / muliẹ rum aere colḷ [ato] / statu[am] p̣ osuit (per tutti M. BUONO-CORE, L'Abruzzo e il Molise in età romana tra storia ed epigrafia, II, L'Aquila , 2002, p. 923 ss.). Per le iscrizioni oggetto della presente ricerca, si v. infra nel testo.

Bantia ad Oppido sono oscure: pare che il reperto dovette essere trafugato non certo per il suo valore storico-documentale, bensí per il prezzo del metallo, finendo, come tale, per arricchire una tomba di qualche abbiente defunto della vicina Oppido. Il ritrovamento componeva tre distinti frammenti piú corposi e qualche altro pezzettino, che solo in segui-degli altri frammenti epigrafici scoperti e conservati piú o meno fortunosamente, dalla Sicilia a Venezia 2 . La cui analisi comparata mi pare obbligato fu attribuito alla Tabula. La sua pubblicazione suscitò l'interesse degli studiosi fin dal primo momento, tanto da spingere il Museo archeologico di Napoli ad acquistarla, pare per 400 scudi. Due dei frammenti furono pubblicati da F. Avellino, nella Dissertatio isagogica (p. 38). Uno di questi due frammenti si trova ancora oggi nel Museo Nazionale di Napoli (provenendo dall'omonimo Museo borbonico, dove era stato conservato, a differenza dell'altro offerto all'Accademia Ercolanense e mai consegnato). Nel 1967 Adamesteanu e Torelli scoprirono e pubblicarono un ulteriore frammento. Da ultimo il Torelli ha posto in relazione con la Tabula un frammento scoperto in tempi piú recenti, da lui pubblicato e commentato: M. TORELLI, Una nuova epigrafe di Bantia e la cronologia dello statuto municipale bantino, in Atheneum, LXVII, 1983, 252-257. 2 Di essi vorrei citare, per una visione di assieme, i piú rilevanti: Le Tabulae Iguvinae, considerate «il monumento principale della lingua e della civiltà degli Umbri» (Cosí G. DEVOTO, Gli antichi italici 4 , Firenze, 1969, 13), vendute il 25 agosto del 1456 ai rappresentanti della città di Gubbio e consistenti in sette tavole di bronzo in caratteri latini ed in caratteri dichiarati "ignoti", delle quali due, custodite, secondo quanto dichiarato nel 1673 dal giureconsulto Antonio Concioli, da 133 anni nell'Arsenale di Venezia e poi mai piú riviste. Probabilmente furono trovate "in un sotterraneo ornato di mosaici, presso il Teatro Romano" (A. CONCIOLI, Status Civitatis Eugubii, 1 a ed., 1673; 2 a ed., 1685, Macerata, cap. 2). Di queste tavole vi furono diverse edizioni; ma solo nel 1723 si ebbe un'edizione completa, ritenuta definitiva, ad opera di Thoma Dempster, che la presentò nel suo De Etruria Regali, scritto a Pisa tra il 1616 ed il 1619, ma pubblicato solo nel 1723. Esse erano in etrusco e latino ed avevano un contenuto religioso. Sono sette tavole bronzee, concernenti complessi cerimoniali di lustrazione ed espiazione della città. Un'iscrizione in lingua osca portata a Messina nel 283 a.C., da mercenari Mamertini reduci da Siracusa, pubblicata solo nel 1604 a Venezia, nella Istoria Siciliana di Giuseppe Buonfiglio e ricostruita, nelle parti mancanti, da copie rinvenute successivamente. L'iscrizione conteneva le parole meddices e mamertino, ma era in greco. Cippo Abellano, che in ben 60 righe conservava nella lingua osca un trattato intervenuto tra le città di Nola e di Abella. Reso noto nel 1750, era stato trovato cinque anni prima dal padre Stefano Remondini, il quale lo aveva riconosciuto in una soglia di una porta dove soffriva "il danno del calpestío degli uomini non solo ma ancor de' carri". Spedito dal Remondini all'abate Passeri a Pesaro fu da questi pubblicato nelle Memorie della Società Colombaria, nel 1752. Ebbe due successive edizioni ad opera dello scopritore Remondini, nel 1757 e nel 1760 (Sul punto v. G. DEVOTO, Gli antichi italici, cit., 15, il quale si basa su T. MOMMSEN, Die Unteritalischen Dialekte, Leipzi, 1850, 121 s.). 15 ulteriori iscrizioni e le scritte di una trentina di monete, le quali sono testimoniate nel Saggio sulla lingua etrusca e su altre antiche d'Italia, pubblicato nel 1789 dall'abate Luigi Lanzi. el escenario de la segunda edición del congreso internacional El jardí com a font histórica II: Els jardins romans, dedicado al estudio de los jardines de la antigua Roma. Así, la jornada reunió a especialistas de diversas disciplinas para analizar el jardín en el mundo romano desde perspectivas arquitectónicas, literarias, jurídicas, arqueológicas y artísticas, con el propósito de entender su significado más allá de la mera ornamentación. Y es que la elección del tema no fue casual. Si bien el jardín ha sido tradicionalmente concebido como un espacio de recreo o de lujo, los estudios recientes han puesto de relieve su función social, política y económica en la Antigüedad. De hecho, los jardines romanos no solo eran lugares de esparcimiento, sino también escenarios de poder, filosofía y espiritualidad. Desde los fastuosos horti imperiales hasta los espacios verdes en las domus privadas, pasando por los jardines públicos o las representaciones de jardines en la pintura y la literatura, el congreso exploró el papel que estos entornos desempeñaban en la vida romana y su reflejo en las fuentes antiguas.

La lastra sepolcrale cristiana di Flamininus, ritrovata nel 1872 nei pressi della chiesa di San Valentino a Caldonazzo (Trento), sembra potersi datare al VI-VII secolo. L'articolo la analizza dai punti di vista epigrafico e stilistico, collocandola nel più ampio contesto del sito di San Valentino, il quale, stando a quanto riportato nei documenti d'archivio, ha restituito nel corso del tempo materiali databili tra Tardoantico e Medioevo.

The paper presents and analyses a newly discovered limestone altar dedicated to the god Liber, found in 2018 during the cleaning of the Rakitnica riverbed in Rogatica, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The monument, which is currently housed in the premises of the Tourist Organisation of the Municipality of Rogatica, contributes to the understanding of religious and cultural practices in the Roman province of Dalmatia.
The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed description and analysis of the monument and its inscription, with an effort to contextualise it within both micro- and macro-regional frameworks. Special attention is given to the meaning of the epigraphic text and the context of the cult of Liber in the province of Dalmatia.
Through analysis of available data and comparison with other monuments from the region, the study seeks to offer answers to questions related to the function and symbolism of this monument within the local economic and social landscape of ancient Rogatica.

Germanii şi austro-ungarii trebuiau să atace din două direcţii pentru a ocupa această zonă. Lupte grele se dau pentru Măgura Odobeştilor care era cheia poziţiilor româno-ruse. Căderea ei în mâinile duşmanului a dus la pierderea Focşanilor şi a Văii Putnei. Oraşul Focşani, reşedinţa judeţului Putna, va fi ocupat de armatele Puterilor Centrale în noaptea de 25 spre 26 decembrie 1916/7-8 ianuarie 1917, ca de altfel şi cea mai pare parte a judeţului Putna, 50 comune din 80 fiind ocupate. Românii şi ruşii, după pierderea Măgurii Odobeştilor şi evacuarea Focşanilor s-au retras pe linia Suşiţei, Putnei şi a Siretului. La 28 decembrie 1916/10 ianuarie 1917, Inaltul Comandament german dădu ordinul de intrare în defensivă. Războiul de poziţie, cu bombardamentul şi acţiunile lui locale se va menţine pentru o jumătate de an (1).

While in Classical and Early Hellenistic times the sculptors working in Knidos came in general from Athens, the artists of the later periods, as we learn from their signatures, came from very different regions. Some of them, like the Chiotian family of Zenodotos and his son Menippos settled in the city and the grandson finally got the citizenship of Knidos. In this time, the sculptors worked sometimes in cooperation on the same project as on the altar of Apollon Karneios where at least three signatures remained (Zenodotos the Jounger, Theon and Boulis). The figures of the frieze show clear affinities to Rhodian sculptures. This is of a certain importance because all the statues of the signed bases are missing and we have no idea about the style of the sculptors. However, one of the sculptors of the altar (Theon) worked also in Rhodes and received even the citizenship of the island. Once again, the close relationship of these two states can be documented and beside this, the global connections between the workshops in Hellenistic times can be recorded.

La poesía que describe la arquitectura de la Antigüedad tardía toma auge a partir del siglo IV con la expansión del cristianismo y el florecimiento de los lugares de culto. Estos textos poéticos, presentes en inscripciones y en obras literarias latinas, cumplen una triple función conmemorativa, didáctica y doctrinal. A partir de una recopilación de diversos epigramas
procedentes del Occidente romano, datados entre los siglos IV a VI, analizamos la figura de los santos como motivo literario que justifica la construcción y el mantenimiento de las iglesias. Además, describimos las principales formulaciones de este tópico en su contexto poético.

largo de sus años de existencia ha evitado los trabajos de síntesis o meramente descriptivos y ha acogido una amplia diversidad de monografías, artículos, noticias y contribuciones siempre originales en todos los campos de la Tardoantigüedad (cultura material, fuentes literarias, mentalidad, historiografía, repertorio de novedades y crítica de libros). Esta dimensión de amplio espectro no implica, llegado el caso, una desatención de las investigaciones en zonas geográfi cas concretas abordando aspectos históricos en su manifestación regional, con la misma exigencia de hacer aportaciones en temas originales y no reelaboraciones o síntesis. Esta revista está abierta a todos los planteamientos y orientaciones metodológicas que superen el estricto examen del consejo de redacción, pero a la vez se puede plantear un tema central de discusión o incluso monografías que sirva de marco conceptual y temático a los originales. El rasgo distintivo de la línea editorial de esta revista es su búsqueda de aportaciones originales, claras, de carácter inédito, que vayan a hacer una aportación nueva, profesional y metodológicamente solvente, que sea signifi cativa en el ámbito de los estudios de la Tardoantigüedad. La veracidad y honestidad son las señas de identidad más preciadas para la revista Antigüedad y Cristianismo. The present paper discusses a military diploma fragment discovered in the principia of the auxiliary fort at Călugăreni / Mikháza on the eastern limes of Dacia superior, in the destruction layers related to one of the weapon deposits (armamentarium). The fragment of the diploma dates between 133 and 142 AD. Taking into account the perfect cut, which was obviously intentional, and the late 3rd century AD context, we can conclude that it was prepared for recycling.

L’année 2028 marquera le 500e anniversaire de la découverte de
la « table claudienne » à Lyon et le (quasi) centenaire de l’édition de
référence de Philippe Fabia. Cette séance sera l’occasion de présenter
le projet collectif Tabula, qui se propose de réexaminer ce document
exceptionnel dans tous ses aspects, archéologiques, historiques,
littéraires et mémoriels, antiques comme modernes. Nous présenterons
le programme du projet scientifique (2026-2027) et en dessinerons les
premières pistes à partir d’exemples concrets, en suivant une trame
chronologique, depuis le discours de Claude prononcé au sénat jusqu’à
la fabrication et l’installation de la table à Lugudunum et, encore au-delà,
à son destin après sa découverte au 16e siècle.

Beginnings of the kingdom. Church synods of Split, Tomislav and his era on the 1100th anniversary (International conference, Split, 8th-10th May 2025)

An early medieval inscription carved on a relief-decorated stone beam, discovered in 1953 near the Church of St. Michael above Ston, gave rise to a wealth of historiographic production within the first decade after its discovery, with discussions continuing until the late 1960s (C. Fisković, B. Gabričević, Lj. Karaman, J. Kovačević, J. Lučić, I. Ostojić, D. S. Popović, M. Vego, F. Vlašić), and occasionally thereafter. Both its epigraphic and artistic components were examined (M. Jurković), with particular attention focused on the text, which mentions the personal name Michael. The short inscription was thus linked to the Archangel Michael as a heavenly protector, though alternative interpretations were proposed, identifying the donor of the inscription with several rulers of the narrower Hum region (Michael Višević, early 10th century) or the broader area of Duklja (Michael Vojislavljević, late 11th century). All three possibilities were, in various contexts, associated with different stages in the construction of the eponymous Church of St. Michael. Accordingly, the chronology of the inscription shifted with changing interpretations. This paper will offer another proposal for reading and recontextualizing the epigraphic text, aiming to solidify the chronology and cultural background of the inscription.

This study examines the socio-political landscape of the ancient city of Amastris (modern Amasra) through the lens of its road infrastructure, with a particular focus on the construction and significance of Aquila's roads. Situated in the challenging terrain of northern Anatolia's Küre Mountains, Amastris served as a vital maritime hub, linking diverse inland and coastal communities within Paphlagonia. Employing a multidisciplinary approach that integrates ancient literary analysis, archaeological evidence, geospatial modeling, and modern photogrammetry, this paper reconstructs the network of primary and secondary Roman roads emanating from Amastris. The research highlights the dual role of these roads in fostering territorial coherence and enhancing regional connectivity, supporting both local autonomy and imperial governance. Key findings demonstrate that Aquila's roads were not merely infrastructural projects but strategic undertakings that blended private investment with public utility. These projects reflect the intricate interplay between individual agency and state interests in Roman provincial administration. Furthermore, the study explores the broader cultural and economic impacts of road construction on Amastris, illustrating how connectivity shaped civic identity, social integration, and territorial integrity. The paper concludes that Aquila's road-building initiatives were instrumental in sustaining Amastris 's strategic significance and functionality within the Roman Empire. By examining the dynamic relationship between local and imperial priorities, this study offers insights into how infrastructure functioned as a nexus of governance, economic development, and regional integration in ancient Anatolia.

This study analyses the economic and social life of the city of Terracina (ancient Anxur) in the Roman era, through a systematic examination of epigraphic evidence. Based on a corpus of 339 inscriptions from the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) and catalogued in the Epigraphic Database Roma (EDR), the research investigates professions, trades, public offices, legal status, and social mobility dynamics. Particular attention is dedicated to the role of freedmen, acts of euergetism, and the epigraphic representation of economic activities. The qualitative analysis of a representative sample of inscriptions, directly examined in this study, together with quantitative data derived from the entire corpus selected for numerical analysis, reveals an urban fabric characterized by a certain degree of artisanal specialization, a marked presence of individuals of freedman status active in local economic sectors, and significant manifestations of euergetism. The issue of the so-called "epigraphic silence" concerning specific professional categories, particularly those related to port activities, is critically addressed in light of new evidence, suggesting future research perspectives oriented towards an integrated approach combining epigraphic, archaeological, and prosopographical sources.

Il presente studio analizza la vita economica e sociale della città di Terracina (antica Anxur) in epoca romana, attraverso un esame sistematico delle testimonianze epigrafiche. Basandosi su un corpus di 339 iscrizioni provenienti dal Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) e catalogate nell'Epigraphic Database Roma (EDR), la ricerca indaga le professioni, i mestieri, le cariche pubbliche, lo status giuridico e le dinamiche di mobilità sociale. Particolare attenzione è dedicata al ruolo dei liberti, agli atti di evergetismo e alla rappresentazione epigrafica delle attività economiche. L'analisi qualitativa di un campione rappresentativo delle iscrizioni, esaminate direttamente in questo studio, insieme ai dati quantitativi derivati dall'intero corpus selezionato per l'analisi numerica, restituisce l'immagine di un tessuto urbano contraddistinto da una certa specializzazione artigianale, da una marcata presenza di individui di condizione libertina attivi nei settori economici locali e da rilevanti manifestazioni di evergetismo. La questione del cosiddetto "silenzio epigrafico" relativo a specifiche categorie professionali, in particolare quelle legate alle attività portuali, è affrontata in chiave critica alla luce di nuove evidenze, suggerendo prospettive di ricerca futura orientate a un approccio integrato tra fonti epigrafiche, archeologiche e prosopografiche.

no-sannitico con le città o comunità, secondo i casi, di Capua e
Cuma, Atella e Calatia, Allifae e Venafrum.

Suggestions on the relationship between Rome and the
Italici in Campania and in the Samnium between iv and iii century
BC: The coinages’ evidence · This paper focuses on the relation
ship between coinage and institutional status, such as civitas
sine suffragio / municipium, civitas optimo iure, coloniae optimo
iure / coloniae latinae in Campania and Samnium when Rome
strengthened its ties with these countries in the last decades of
the iv century BC and the first ones of the iii century BC.
With this topic in mind, some communities are taken into con
sideration, first of all Capua and Cuma, Atella and Calatia
among Campanian cities, Allifae and Venafrum among Samni
tian communities.

During archaeological excavations at Andriace, the harbour of Myra, an honorific inscription was discovered in front of the quay structure just north of the granarium (horrea Hadriani). It was prepared by Arrius Paetus Themistius, the praeses of Lycia province, to honour the Roman emperor Jovian with a statue. The discovery provides new information about Themistius, who was introduced to us only by the sophist Libanius, including his tria nomina and unexplored service period in Lycia. It has also led to reconsidering the tenure of the praesidatus of two uiri clarissimi, Themistius and Sozomenus. In this context, addenda et corrigenda are proposed for another honorific inscription to emperor Julian in Andriace. Finally, the administrative importance of Myra and Andriace in Lycia during the 4th century is presented.

Durante las excavaciones arqueológicas en Andriace, el puerto de Myra, se descubrió una inscripción honorífica delante de la estructura del muelle, justo al norte del granarium (horrea Hadriani). Fue preparada por Arrio Peto Temistio, presidente de la provincia de Licia, para honrar al emperador romano Joviano con una estatua. El descubrimiento aporta nuevos datos sobre Temistio, del que sólo nos había hablado el sofista Libanio, como sus tria nomina y su inexplorado periodo de servicio en Licia. También ha llevado a reconsiderar la titularidad del praesidatus de dos uiri clarissimi Temistio y Sozómeno. En este contexto, se proponen adiciones y correcciones para otra inscripción honorífica al emperador Juliano en Andriace. Por último, se señala la importancia administrativa de Myra y Andriace en Licia durante el siglo IV.

In this dissertation, I will focus on the female imperial cult because it is the Roman female cult with the largest number of epigraphic records, demonstrating the fundamental religious role of women in Roman society, in the evolution and subsistence of Roman urban centers outside the capital. For this reason, it was one of the only contexts in which Roman women could stand out socially. Furthermore, due to the vastness of the Roman Empire, I will focus on the region of Hispania due to the geographical connection of my research with the Iberian Peninsula.
When we think of women in the Roman Empire, we have the stereotypical view that women had little to no participation in Roman society, and that their contribution was restricted to the domestic context as wives, housewives and mothers. However, this view is reductive because there were exceptions to the norm, namely the imperial flaminicae or sacerdotes. These were priestesses appointed or elected individually by a province, conventus or city within the Roman Empire, with the exception of the capital, to worship certain deities or deified imperial figures.
Thus, I will contextualize the origins of the priestesses of the imperial cult, comment some parallels that are still established between the imperial flaminicae and the flaminica Dialis. I will also define this priesthood by explaining the various administrative and honorary titles, the requirements to join, as well as the dress, the duties, the benefits and the importance of these priestesses at a socioeconomic, personal and family level in local, “conventual” and provincial communities. All of this will be accomplished through a prosopographic study, which attempts to reconstruct the lives of the priestesses of the imperial cult.

Ein in der Spätantike außergewöhnlich umfänglicher Weinbau an der Mosel ist seit geraumer Zeit bekannt. Große Anbauflächen müssen das Lesegut für in ihrem Fassungsvermögen gewaltige Kelteranlagen geliefert haben. Weinbau in diesem Stil setzt eine umfassende Organisation voraus, wie sie im 4. Jahrhundert eigentlich nur der staatliche Verwaltungsapparat bewältigen konnte. Auf diese Frage gibt nun eine erste Antwort ein neuer Sarkophag (Abb. 1), der 1990 vor der Abteikirche St. Maxi min in Trier gefunden wurde und der den Verantwortlichen für einen staatlich ver walteten Weinbau, einen p(erfectissinms) v(ir) p(rae)p(ositus) vinorum nennt. Wenn der Sarkophag auch eine Fülle weiterer wichtiger Aussageelemente zum Sarko phagtypus, zur Dekoration oder zu anderen Elementen der Inschrift beinhaltet, so ist doch ein geradezu Aufsehen erregender Befund die bislang einzigartige Nennung eines praepositus vinorum. Die Wallfahrt zum Heiligen Rock nach Trier im Jahre 1996, die dritte Heilig Rock-Wallfahrt dieses Jahrhunderts, wird die in Trier und im Rheinland besonders verehrten Helena und Konstantin erneut ins Zentrum des Interesses rücken. Mit die sen Namen eng verbunden sind die frühchristliche Blüte und die kaiserliche Präsenz in Trier. Die Sammlungen der archäologischen Zeugnisse dazu werden über die Herrenreliquie hinaus den historisch interessierten Pilger in diesem Jahr vor allem anziehen. Ein bescheidener Zuwachs in der vielfältigen Reihe spätrömischer Funde aus Trier ist nun ein weiterer Fingerring mit der Inschrift fidem Constantino (Abb. 1. -EV 94,19). Das Fundstück stammt aus dem Aushub einer Baustelle in der Südallee. Es handelt sich um einen relativ großen Bronzering, der noch geringe Reste von Vergoldung aufweist, insbesondere in den Vertiefungen. Der Ring mit geschlosse nem, bandförmigem Reif an einer rechteckigen Ringplatte hat einen inneren Durch messer von 2,5 cm in der Breite und 2,0 cm in der Tiefe. Der Reif ist 5 mm, vor dem Ansatz an der Platte 5,5 mm breit bei einer Dicke von 1,25 bis 2 mm; die recht eckige Platte ist 1,35 x 0,6 cm groß. Der Bronzering ist aus einem Stück gegossen; die Inschrift ist mit einem Meißel, nicht mit Buchstabenpunzen, eingeschlagen. Die rechteckige Platte trägt die Inschrift fidem:, auf dem geschlossenen bandförmigen Reif wird die Inschrift fortgesetzt mit Constantino.

A pesar de la ausencia de fuentes literarias que ofrezcan información sobre las características y esferas de acción de las divinidades locales del norte hispano, consideramos que las diversas formas de denominación de estas divinidades y la utilización de los epítetos también locales en los formularios de los dioses clásicos buscaban articular la comunicación entre la esfera humana y divina. Tal y como se ha indicado para otras religiones politeístas, como es el caso de la religión griega, la riqueza de los diferentes panteones del norte hispano, en particular los del noroeste, pone de relieve su fluidez y complejidad, y deja entrever las múltiples estrategias de los humanos para comunicarse lo más eficazmente posible con la esfera divina.

This work studies epigraphic testimonies referring to the cult of Genius as a protective divinity of the civic communities in Hispania citerior. The aim is to understand the role which the cult of this divinity may have played in the cohesion of different civitates in this provincial territory. Using the comparative method, we attempt to trace the differences and similarities which can be observed in relation to the other two Hispanic provinciae: Baetica and Lusitania.

Resumen: La protoforma céltica *bedo-'canal, mina', un sustantivo de resultado derivado de la raíz verbal PIE *bhedh(h2)-'(ex)cavar', gozó de relativa productividad en los dialectos célticos tanto insulares como continentales y en el terreno de los nombres comunes y propios por igual. En el presente artículo tenemos como objetivo, en primer lugar, confeccionar un panorama derivativo crítico de todas estas voces heredadas en céltico y, en segundo lugar, sumar a esta nutrida nómina otras formas que hasta la fecha no han sido analizadas como derivadas de *bedo-, ampliando de este modo nuestro conocimiento sobre las lenguas, la teonimia y la realidad material de los antiguos celtas.

In this article, we aim to examine the public presence of the Augusta Iulia Cornelia Salonina within the image and self-representation of the power of her husband, Publius Licinius Gallienus (253-268 AD). This research aims to investigate how the Augusta Salonina manifests herself within the public propaganda promoted by her consort, identifying the most frequently used media, the regions of the Empire where her presence is most rooted and the contribution she made to the dynastic image of the domus Licinia Augusta during the period between 254 and 268 AD. For instance, we will examine how the Augusta emerges most prominently in the Latin epigraphs of Italy, North Africa and Hispania, as well as actively participating in the image of various types of coins directly associated with Gallienus. This monetary involvement will be examined through the legends on the obverse of coins, such as SALONINA or CONCORDIA, and through its assimilating role with the figure of Σελήνη (Moon), as opposed to Gallienus’ role as Ἥλιος (Sun).

This paper presents four newly discovered Roman military tile and brick stamps from Brâncovenești /
Marosvécs. One belongs to a type already known as belonging to the Ala numeri Illyricorum, the other two
represent a new type and can be read as Ala Illyricorum.

With the help and through the lens of underestimated bibliography and unpublished archival documentation, we will analyze some of the main stages in the biography and career of the Umbrian “engineer/topographer” Raniero Mengarelli (1863-1944) who seemed most significant in the process of building the baggage of advanced skills that in his mature years enabled him to work so fruitfully in Cerveteri and in general in the area entrusted to his care.

Este trabajo analiza las inscripciones de los conuentus Cluniensis, Asturum, Lucensis y Bracaraugustanus dedicadas a divinidades locales. Su estudio se enmarca en la expansión del hábito epigráfico y la religión romana provincial y se centra en examinar las fórmulas epigráficas que nos permiten identificar prácticas rituales romanas asumidas por la población local en el culto y comunicación con los dioses.
This paper analyses the inscriptions from the conuentus Cluniensis, Asturum, Lucensis and Bracaraugustanus dedicated to local divinities. The study is contextualized in the expansion of the epigraphic habit and provincial  Roman religión and pays especial attention to the epigraphic formulae related to Roman ritual practices assimilated by local population for the worship and communication with their gods.

U radu se analizira i tumači specifična muzejska dokumentarna građa iz dokumentacijskog fonda Evidencija o izložbama Arheološkog muzeja Istre. Riječ je o dvije rukopisne knjige koje sadrže potpise i dojmove posjetitelja Muzeja grada Pule, prethodnika današnjeg Arheološkog muzeja Istre. Prva knjiga sadrži upise posjetitelja datirane od 1. rujna 1902. do 31. prosinca 1921. godine. Druga se kronološki nadovezuje na prvu, s upisima posjetitelja do 12. travnja 1929. godine. Danas ove knjige služe kao vrijedna sekundarna dokumentacija koja pruža podatke o posjetiteljima tj. korisnicima stalne izložbe najstarijeg pulskog muzeja. Također, kao vjerodostojan dokument vremena, predstavljaju vrijedan izvor za istraživače povijesti Pule.

U radu se donosi i analizira dosad neobjavljena i nekorištena projektna dokumentacija za gradnju zgrade Pulskog radničkog društva na Clivo Santo Stefano 3 u Puli, danas Usponu sv. Stjepana 1. Zgrada je sagrađena 1883. godine, a početkom 20. stoljeća dodijeljena je Gradskom muzeju (Museo Civico), prethodniku Arheološkog muzeja Istre, i Gradskoj knjižnici (Biblioteca Civica). Od 1930. sjedište je Državne organizacije za zaštitu materinstva i djece (Federazione provinciale dell’Opera Nazionale per la Protezione della Maternità e dell’Infanzia - Aiuto materno). Nakon njezina rušenja, 1937. godine na istom je mjestu podignuta nova zgrada za potrebe javnih službi (Casa della Madre e del Bambino). In this critical note, the author discusses the new edition
by Luca Burzelli of Gasparo Contarini’s Scritti teologici by Gasparo Contarini (Turin,
Aragno, 2023), underlining the role that Girolamo Savonarola’s writings played in
Contarini’s religious formation. In particular, Savonarola’s influence appears evident
in the so-called Turmerlebnis, which Contarini recounts in a letter to Giustiniani in
1511, long before the appearance of Luther’s writings and Erasmus’s De immensa Dei
misericordia.

Our study presents a medieval battle knife discovered near Gruișor, Mureș county (Fig. 1), a type of weapon which was widespread in Central Europe towards the end of the Middle Ages (15th–16th centuries). Earlier studies considered this type of knife as „rare” in Transylvania,* but lately the number of these artifacts which entered museum collections has increased considerably, although most of them were found by metal detectorists. Even if their place of discovery is known, the archaeological context is missing, hence they are usually neglected by researchers. The weapon recently found at Gruișor might be associated with the szekler insurrection from 1562.
