En el noroeste peninsular, el ciclo escriturario gótico se desarrolló con cierta
demora, hasta bien entrado el siglo XIII, pues la realidad gráfica visigótica perduró hasta la segunda mitad del siglo XII y su tránsito hacia la escritura carolina no se inició hasta mediados de esta centuria. El presente estudio pretende situar las fronteras de la escritura en la documentación producida, consumida y/o conservada en Santa María de Oia (Pontevedra) para los siglos XII-XIII; conocer las distintas fases vividas en el proceso de sustitución de la escritura visigótica por la escritura carolina, luego la natural evolución gótica y, por último, su derivación cursiva.

Abstract – Renaissance Music History Module (ca. 1450–1600)

This comprehensive module explores the rich tapestry of Renaissance music from ca. 1450 to 1600, highlighting its profound cultural, stylistic, and theoretical transformations. Beginning with the origins of the term "Renaissance," the course investigates the socio-historical context that gave rise to this musical rebirth across key European regions: Britain, France and the Low Countries, Italy, and Germany.

Learners are guided through core theoretical concepts such as modal systems, tuning practices, musica ficta, text-music relationships, rhythm, and the evolution of texture—from medieval monophony to intricate Renaissance polyphony and homophony. The impact of the Council of Trent, and the rise of influential compositional schools such as the Roman and Venetian, are analyzed alongside the stylistic divergence prompted by the Reformation.

A focused study of vocal and instrumental genres—ranging from the Mass, motet, and madrigal to dance forms and intabulations—provides insight into both sacred and secular traditions. The module also delves into ornamentation, performance practices, and the lasting legacy of major composers across Europe.

This module is designed to inspire both academic inquiry and practical engagement with Renaissance music, offering a foundation for further study in early music, historical performance, and musicology.

Ci hanno provato anche gli studiosi della rivista "Dante e l'Arte" i quali, in collaborazione con l'Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, il Museu d'Art Nacional de Catalunya, Villa I Tatti, l'Institut d'Estudis Medievals e l'Istituto Italiano di Cultura di Barcellona hanno promosso una serie di convegni, il primo dei quali, "Dante visualizzato -Le carte ridenti I: XIV secolo" si è svolto a Barcellona dal 20 al 22 maggio 2015, avendo come asse portante la ricerca sui più importanti manoscritti illustrati del '300 e la ricezione artistica della Commedia a partire dal XIV secolo. Precedute da sessioni propedeutiche per studenti svoltesi all'Universitat Autònoma, poi nella sede prestigiosa e spettacolare della Reial Acadèmia de Bones Lletres, ma anche nelle sale del bellissimo Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya, in una cornice artistica e culturale d'eccellenza come è la città di Barcellona, i tre giorni di convegno sono sfilati velocemente tra le diverse e interessanti relazioni, a cominciare da quella di apertura di Marcello Ciccuto, Dante e le parole illuminate. This study analyses the development of bathing practices in medieval England through examination of a group of medical texts, including collections of remedies from the Old English period, such as Bald's Leechbook and the Lacnunga, and later treatises, such as the Middle English translations of the Secreta Secretorum and a rewriting of Gilbertus Anglicus's Compendium Medicinae. The contribution shows how in the Old English period prescriptions of therapeutic baths are scattered, yet they are used to cure a variety of diseases, while, in the Middle English period, also thanks to the influence of the Salernitan school, bathing starts playing an increasingly vital role in medical practices, so that sections of medical treatises are devoted to baths and their therapeutic virtues. 1 This publication is part of the results of a research project entitled 'Cleansing Water: Water and Baptism in Old English Poetry' that has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under the Marie Skłodowska-Curie grant agreement No. 744615.

Édition princeps d’une catéchèse en latin, destinée à des néophytes. Le prédicateur voulait commenter le dialogue par lequel débute le canon de la messe, notamment l’échange Sursum corda - Habemus ad Dominum. Mais une mutilation accidentelle du manuscrit unique (Wien, ÖNB, 580) ne permet de lire aujourd’hui que son explication de Dominus uobiscum. Les citations bibliques, qui renvoient toutes à des versions préhiéronymiennes connues en Italie, suggèrent de situer l’auteur avant 600 et dans ce pays.
Abstract: First edition of a latin catechesis, delivered to newly baptized. The preacher intended to comment the dialogue by which the canon of the mass begins, mainly the verbal exchange: Sursum corda - Habemus ad Dominum. But, on account of a codicological accident in the sole manuscript (Wien, ÖNB, 580), only the explanation of Dominus uobiscum is now preserved. As the biblical quotations correspond to prehieronymian translations known in Italy, the writer probably lived in that country and before the year six-hundred.

Der Artikel versteht sich als Replik und Fortführung des in dieser Zeitschrift erschienen Beitrags „Presentation and Discussion of a Reformation-era, Catholic, Vernacular Baptismal Rite in Germany in Manuscript Cgm 9509“ von L.A. Donahue. Aufgrund weitgehender wörtlicher Übereinstimmungen des dort transkribierten Taufritus mit der vom Autor der vorliegenden Studie edierten Agende Sebastian Krablers von 1580 werden beide Texte auf Zusammenhänge überprüft. Dazu ist die einem Salzburger Rituale von 1557 beigebundene Handschrift Cgm 9509 vollständig in ihrem Entstehungskontext zu untersuchen und die Quellen der enthaltenen Riten im Vergleich mit weiteren zeitgenössischen Ritualien zu ermitteln. Im Ergebnis stellt sich Cgm 9509 als komplexe Mischung verschiedener Diözesantraditionen dar.
Abstract: This article is intended as a response and continuation of the study „Presentation and Discussion of a Reformation-era, Catholic, Vernacular Baptismal Rite in Germany in Manuscript Cgm 9509“ by L.A. Donahue published in this journal. Due to extensive literal correspondences between the baptismal rite transcribed there and the Agenda by Sebastian Krabler from 1580 edited by the author of the present study, both texts are examined for correlations. For this purpose, the manuscript Cgm 9509, which is bound with a Salzburg ritual of 1557, is to be fully investigated in its context of origin. Likewise, the sources of the rites contained in the book are to be determined in comparison with other contemporary rituals. As a result, Cgm 9509 presents itself as a complex mixture of different diocesan traditions.

This short note responds to a recent article on "Occultation Records in the Royal Frankish Annals for A.D. 807: Knowledge Transfer from Arabia to Frankia?" by Ralph Neuhäuser and Dagmar L. Neuhäuser (JHA 55, no. 3). It shows that, contrary to a key claim made in this article, the presence of rules for predicting solar and lunar eclipses in manuscripts associated with the so-called Seven-Book-Computus of 809 is due to the influence of the Liber Nemroth, a text with roots in the pre-Islamic Near East.

An overview of the manuscripts annotated by Boccaccio is provided, defining
a typological classification of the glosses and evaluating the criteria that have been adopted in their most recent critical editions. The examination focuses specifically on those glosses in which Boccaccio includes variants, conjectures and corrections, whether in the margins of his own texts or those of other authors. A clearer understanding of Boccaccio’s annotation system makes it possible to reconsider five passages of the Decameron and to offer new ecdotic proposals for the last redaction of the text.

El exquisito manuscrito conciliar que Vigila y Sarracino copiaron en Albelda en el año 976 lleva en uno de sus primeros folios (RBME, d-I-2, f. 16v) una interesante Maiestas Domini en la que imagen y texto concurren para transmitir el mensaje pretendido por sus autores. Este, sin embargo, no ha sido captado del todo correctamente por los estudiosos contemporáneos. En el presente artículo, tras una breve presentación de la Maiestas objeto de estudio (punto 1), discutimos las dos hipótesis interpretativas dadas hasta la fecha —la tradicional, representada por Soledad de Silva y Verástegui, y la más reciente de Fernando Rubert— (punto 2), para después proponer (punto 3) una interpretación alternativa que hemos calificado de lectura originaria u original, y ello no porque sea novedosa, sino sencillamente porque es la lectura original, esto es, la pretendida por los escribas. En el punto 4 se resume la tesis defendida: a saber, que la lectura correcta es la que se lee en el manuscrito, que no necesitaba ser corregido.

Of the great Dominican and Franciscan encyclopaediae, only that of Thomas of Cantimpre, the De Naturis Rerum in twenty books, completed, after fifteen years of work,' in 1240, contains moralizations expressing the symbolism of certain animals, trees and hems, springs, planets, and elements. As Thomas notes in an elaborate prologue, often he will append to a given entry such moralizations, based on scripture and classical and patristic writers. "Hence I have briefly distinguished the moral meanings and significances of things in certain places from time to time, but not continuously because I would shun prolixity."' Thomas aimed his work largely at an audience of preachers and parish priests, and he believed that the animal history portion of the encyclopaedia could offer them a valuable tool for the preparation of sermons. In this intention Thomas wrote in the tradition of near contemporaries like Robert of Basevom, whose forma praedicandi tells us that the preacher ought always to offer his listeners something subtle and curious, a device particularly efficacious when they begin to sleep.' Though both Albert the Great and Vincent of Beauvais, silently or openly,' were heavily indebted to Thomas in their O\m natural histories, they did not choose to incorporate his morali tales. Thus, it is fairly clear that Thomas had a specific idea of the dual role-at once informational and improving-of the encyclopaedia shared neither by his fellow Dominicans nor by the Franciscan, Bartholomaeus Anglicus in his De Proprietatibus Rerum, though this author's work was later moralized in a very similar way by his fellow Minorite, Marcus of Orvieto.' In the present paper I should like to examine certain of Thomas of Cantimpre's moralitates, and to suggest that he fused in an interesting way in his work two hitherto distinct genres, mixing the traditional encyclopaedia of the Rhabanus Maurus type-which retailed ancient accounts, often fabulous, of animals, their appearances, physical oddities, and breeding habits'-with the preacher's handbooks and distinctiones collections just coming into fashion in the thirteenth century and intended to aid in the compilation of sermons. 7 Thus, his encyclopaedia adds to the traditional accounts of various creatures, dra,m primarily from Pliny,' Solinus, and Aristotle's works on animal movement and generation, many brief stories, supplied with moral applications, of interesting or unusual events in the animal kingdom. This article examines the passive complicity of the Società Internazionale di Storia della Miniatura (SISM) – Napoli (International Society for the History of Miniature Painting) in the reputational attack against Prof. Carla Rossi, which unfolded between December 2022 and 2024. Based on archived emails, institutional communications, and a chronology of public actions, it documents how the Society's name and infrastructure were used—at times without authorisation, at times with institutional silence—to circulate defamatory content.
The study also presents evidence of prior academic collaboration between RECEPTIO and several SISM members, including seminars co-organised with the University of Cassino. The contrast between this documented cooperation and the subsequent inaction of the Society raises broader ethical questions about academic responsibility and institutional accountability.

The Kvarezimal and Tlmačenje od muki, written by scribe Šimun Greblo, is a paper codex with 158 folios measuring 20.2 x 14.5 cm. This codex consists of two separate books written in Glagolitic cursive. The postscript on f 132v, written in Cyrillic script, mentions clerical acolyte of the lower order Šimun as the author of Tlmačenje od muki, which was completed in the town of Roč on 5 March 1493. The other work, Kvarezimal, was completed with the help of cleric Mihovil from Boljun in April 1498. The writing of some parts of the codex gives a slower, disorderly impression, which could be a characteristic of the untrained scribe or the author who was already in his later years (a so-called ‘old manuscript’) . The aim of comparing such parts with a representative sample of the engraving is to determine the possibility of differences in authorship and chronology and their mutual relationship . The main palaeographic guidelines of the research are based on the grapholinguistic method, which considers writing a process and not as a finished, petrified structure as in traditional paleography.

Resumen
La Estoria del fecho de los godos es una crónica castellana anónima redactada, con toda probabilidad en el sur peninsular durante el primer tercio del siglo XV, que gozó de amplia popularidad en ese siglo y en el XVI, a juzgar por el número de manuscritos que de ella hoy se conocen. Esta formación cronística se distingue de otras similares por adaptar el texto de la Estoria de España alfonsí al formato de historia gótica propio de la Historia de rebus Hispaniae del arzobispo de Toledo Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada, a través del romanceamiento de la «Ystoria de los godos» contenido en el Toledano romanzado, una traducción del corpus historiográfico completo efectuada en el siglo XIV. Junto a esta fuente, el compilador se valió de un singular manuscrito de la Estoria de España de Alfonso X, cuyo relato adoptó en amplias secciones de su obra. La Estoria del fecho de los godos se caracteriza además por actualizar el relato que le ofrecían estos dos modelos principales con una «Continuación del Toledano» con la que logra prolongar la historia de Jiménez de Rada hasta el siglo XV mediante el enlace de los relatos de fuentes diversas: la llamada Historia hasta 1288 dialogada, una narración de los reinados de Fernando III, Alfonso X y Sancho IV hasta 1288 redactada a principios del siglo XIV; una abreviación, obra probablemente del compilador, de la Crónica de Alfonso XI continuada con el Poema dedicado al mismo rey; y unos Anales antiguos sevillanos, con los que da cuenta de los reinados de Pedro I a Juan II.

Aunque nos encontramos ante una compilación que se nutre de textos previos, se trata de una obra esencial de la historiografía del siglo XV, un texto clave que condensa y transmite a la modernidad el legado historiográfico de los siglos anteriores. Leída de principio a fin, la crónica imparte una lección de historiografía castellana medieval, pues sus contenidos ilustran algunas de las tendencias decisivas en la evolución de la cronística romance en Castilla desde mediados del siglo XIII hasta principios del XV: la rica tradición de versiones romances de la obra del arzobispo Rodrigo Jiménez de Rada (Toledano romanzado), la creación del modelo de historia nacional alentado por la monarquía de Alfonso X (la Estoria de España), la apertura de dicho modelo a la ficción durante el periodo postalfonsí (Historia hasta 1288 dialogada) y su reapropiación por la corona castellana a mediados del xiv (Crónica de Alfonso XI), y, por último, la tradición analística surgida en los prósperos núcleos urbanos del sur peninsular (Anales sevillanos).

Este volumen ofrece un estudio introductorio en el que se abordan los principales problemas que presenta la obra (la fecha de composición, la existencia de dos versiones, o el tratamiento de las fuentes) y se propone un análisis de todos los testimonios hoy conocidos del texto, estableciendo su valor y sus relaciones. Este análisis textual es la base de la edición crítica, basada en uno de los ejemplares más antiguos que se conservan, y en la que se ofrece una anotación sistemática de las correcciones al manuscrito base, y una selección de las variantes más destacadas que ofrece la tradición manuscrita. En un segundo apartado de notas explicativas se proporciona información sobre el carácter y comportamiento de las dos familias de la Estoria del fecho de los godos, así como en precisar en cada momento las fuentes de la obra. Por primera vez, entonces, se provee de un acceso ponderado y crítico a uno de los textos historiográficos más influyentes de las postrimerías de la Edad Media.

Hace unos mesos, un equipo de trabajo del ICAC editamos por primera vez un hexámetro latino considerado por los especialistas (VOLLMER 1905, FARMHOUSE 2005) como apócrifo de Eugenio de Toledo: el primero del poema 26, In baculo, del Appendix. Fue hallado en una inscripción grabada en un pedazo de hueso, rescatado de un vertedero en Aiguafreda (Catalunya), que se puede fechar por contexto arqueológico en el siglo VII. Pusimos en relación los datos arqueológicos, paleográficos y epigráficos para proponer una visión renovada de la naturaleza de un texto que solo había sido conocido a través de manuscritos escritos varios siglos después de la muerte del considerado autor espurio. Ahora queremos proponer a los compañeros especialistes tanto en filologia como en codicologia y en textos epográficos de transmisión manuscrita la metodologia y conclusiones de este trabajo.

La Suite du roman de Merlin est habitée par la parole, la vive voix des personnages qui s'apostrophent ou se séduisent, la parole force de Merlin qui dévoile le monde arthurien dans sa tragique vérité et accompagne chaque personnage vers son destin, la voix du Haut Maistre qui condamne le sort et scelle les malheurs du Royaume aventureux. Cette omniprésence se traduit dans le texte par la part impressionnante des paroles de personnages. Elles constituent environ 56% du volume du texte, 52% si l'on limite ce relevé au seul discours direct 1 . Les dialogues relèvent d'une écriture régulière, exemple classique de la prose du XIIIème siècle, ils mettent en scène le pouvoir performatif de cette parole, dominée en particulier par «le boin devin», qui ne s'efface que devant la mort, et qui manipule in fine le temps et le récit lui-même. Les dialogues sont construits selon les règles d'écriture contraignantes de la prose arthurienne. L'invention de la prose n'a pas libéré la langue d'un soi-disant carcan du vers, au contraire elle se coule dans des moules rigides qui lient les phrases les unes aux autres : point de fantaisie dans l'organisation de formules narratives qui s'enchaînent avec rigueur et qui s'imposent aussi aux paroles de personnages. Le changement d'énonciateur, qu'il soit au début du dialogue ou après une réplique, se fait au terme de tout un processus sensitif et psychologique qui insère la prise de parole dans un protocole régulier. What does it mean when we rehearse the time-worn temporal phrase, ‘from manuscript to print’? For several decades, scholars have offered powerful models for understanding how queer individuals and communities experience both the restrictive and liberatory potentials of living against the grain of normative, linear time. Time has likewise been a perennial concern in the history of art, whether focused on how sequences of objects produced by a given community obey a unique temporal logic, how the endurance of objects outside of their ‘own’ time makes affective demands on the contemporary viewer or how notions of originality and epigonism are themselves time-bound. This article engages such discourses of non-normative temporalities while examining British Library Arundel MS 66, an English manuscript of mostly astrological texts with images copied from printed Italian sources, focusing in particular on the figure of Andromeda, variously rendered as a beautiful trans woman, unjustly bound. The purpose of this essay is to offer a point of resistance against the prepositional paradigm, from/to, that has dominated book history and in so doing expose the broader social imperatives that such an evolutionary model has underwritten. More than a critique via a case study, this essay will point up what is to be gained by considering manuscripts copied from printed books not as a perverse reversal of prepositional decorum, but instead as generative conjunctions.

L'histoire du droit présente le défi intellectuel de ne pas considérer les normes juridiques actuelles comme les seules solutions possibles pour organiser une société. D'autres systèmes juridique sont existé et d'autres surgiront à l'avenir. Pour comprendre pleinement nos théories et pratiques contemporaines du droit, il est crucial de se tourner non seulement vers ce qui existe, mais aussi vers ce qui a disparu. La recherche en droit prend ainsi un sens nouveau : il ne s'agit pas seulement de retracer l'évolution des idées juridiques, mais aussi de redécouvrir ce qui n'existe plus et de lui donner une place dans notre réflexion actuelle. Pour cela, il est indispensable de revenir aux sources. Cultural relations between Persia and China grew even closer after the Mongol conquest of both countries in the 13th century, when the Īl-Khānids came to power. Mongol rulers were also affected by Chinese art and cultural heritage; it then transferred to Iran by political, commercial, and then cultural relations. So they prepared the conditions for mutual artistic inspirations, especially in painting. Since the illustrated Persian paintings clearly demonstrate foreign influences, including the culture of different nations, significantly China's cultural impact on Iran, the need for this investigation becomes more apparent in the period. The aim of this study is to analyze and describe the manifestation of landscape in the Chinese and the Īl-Khānids paintings and focuses on the study of the similarities and differences of these styles and symbols. For this purpose, two main elements have to be investigated: the elements of Natural landscape in Chinese and Persian paintings in the Yuan and Song/ Īl-Khānids eras and the transmission of similar features. The authors suggest that the Cultural Adaptation Process is both creativity and genius development factor and a factor in the art social integration; for that reason, it has an importance. The result shows there were two ways to convey the style and techniques of Chinese landscape painting. One way is to copy blindly, and another way is a combination of deformed elements and derivation of indigenous features in paintings. Chinese's myriad cultural influences have led to a wide array of the new style paintings in the Īl-Khānid Mongols eras, but the creativity of the Persian artists was also involved in creating the new and eclectic style as well.

La mostra 'Nato per la poesia. Libri e letture di Giovanni Boccaccio' è pensata per celebrare il seicentocinquantesimo anniversario della morte dell’autore. Ospitata nella suggestiva cornice del Salone Teresiano della Biblioteca Universitaria di Pavia, dal 12 maggio al 30 luglio 2025, la mostra esporrà non solo manoscritti ed edizioni antiche di opere boccacciane, ma anche testi di altri autori, letti, compulsati e amati da Boccaccio.
Egli stesso, d’altronde, scrive nel XV libro delle Genealogie di essere nato per la poesia «ex utero matris»: i suoi interessi e la sua voracità, infatti, spaziano dai classici della latinità alle storie popolari, dalle ricostruzioni storiografiche alla leggenda troiana, passando per i più dotti testi universitari e, ovviamente, per la 'Commedia' di Dante.
La mostra cercherà di raccontare alla cittadinanza, attraverso la tradizione, il romanzo di formazione intellettuale del Certaldese, quasi sempre oscurato presso il grande pubblico dal mondo sfolgorante del 'Decameron'. Sarà un’occasione per raccontare il ruolo giocato da Boccaccio su più campi culturali di lunga durata: dal recupero dei classici al rimpatrio del greco in Occidente fino alla fondazione del primo canone letterario e linguistico italiano.
L’esposizione si svilupperà su due livelli: oltre a poter ammirare esposti nelle bacheche alcuni dei più pregiati tesori della Biblioteca Universitaria, i visitatori, alzando lo sguardo, potranno apprezzare anche le stampe in formato 50x70cm dei più importanti autografi boccacciani, i cui diritti di riproduzione sono stati gentilmente concessi dalla Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana e dalla Biblioteca Riccardiana. In un continuo dialogo tra storia e cultura, la mostra Nato per la poesia si pone l’obiettivo ambizioso di raccontare la parabola intellettuale di uno degli uomini più straordinari dell’Italia del Trecento, attraverso le pergamene e le carte che oggi si conservano a Pavia nella biblioteca fondata da Maria Teresa d’Austria.

Aquest article examina la simbologia i la mitologia del mite de la derrota, central en el sistema catalanista, a traves dels textos literaris escrits per catalans durant els segles xix, xx i xxi. Estudia aquests textos en funcio dels referents que s'hi exposen. En dues fases —l'anterior i la posterior a la dictadura franquista—, la necessitat expressada de recuperacio de la memoria historica fa aflorar els personatges historics i els indrets que representen la resistencia o l'agressio. S'hi constata la capacitat de recuperacio dels vencuts, la reconversio dels signes de la derrota en elements positius, constructius, i, sobretot en les ultimes decades, es tendeix a la relacio del mite amb episodis similars d'altres paisos, com el cop d'estat de Xile o l'atemptat de les Torres Bessones de Nova York —casualment esdevinguts tambe en onze de setembre— o la mes recent de les guerres dels Balcans.

Il presente lavoro intende indagare filologicamente e paleograficamente un frammento della Commedia di recentissimo rinvenimento. Proprio agli inizi del 2021 presso l’Archivio di Stato di Fermo, provincia delle Marche, nella sezione del Fondo Notarile, è stato rinvenuto, in un lembo di pergamena di riuso, un trecentesco frammento manoscritto del Purgatorio dantesco. La pergamena era stata riutilizzata per rilegare gli atti del Notaio Aracinti di Monterubbiano, oggi in provincia di Fermo, che redasse i suoi documenti negli ultimi anni del Cinquecento.

Je n'ai pas à présenter ici cet humaniste, dont l'oeuvre, considérée comme fondatrice de la littérature croate, a occupé une place importante dans la Renaissance européenne. 5. The essence of human, his intellectual dignity and high divine calling
6. Problems of sociology, society and its management, comprehensive justice
7. War and peace.
The core of the ideological and spiritual origins of  Nizami's poetic heritage is closely connected with divine wisdom in the Qur'anic interpretation. But he filled them with his figurative considerations and spiritual research. Various motifs, historical and pseudo-historical chronicles, legends, stories, tales and myths are used for an accessible presentation and aesthetic illustration of ideological and spiritual values. Nizami studied a wide range of cultural traditions of Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Arabia, Babylon, the Turkic people, Iran, India. Poet establishes dialogue and understanding between the many rich cultures of the ancient and medieval eras; Zoroastrian, Judaic, Christian, Buddhist and Muslim cultures.
The main mission of the poet is not limited to simply artistic depiction of
the phenomena of the existing material world, socio-historical events and various aspects of human life. Using values, materials and facts from the cultural traditions of individual peoples, he creates his own harmonious universal world.
In the last book (“Iskandar Namah”), although the image of Alexander the Great is depicted, the poet separated three images: Alexander the conqueror, the sage and the prophet. But in reality, the true goal of Alexander was to conquer and rob the countries of the world, establishing the hegemony of the Greeks. Its purpose is first and exactly exposed by Nushabe, the ruler of Aran (Azerbaijan) and then the Chinese Khagan. In the artistic perception of the poet two images are opposed to each other: Alexander the Great the conqueror-idolater with imperial ambitions and the universal human with spiritual perfection, that is Koranic Dhu al-Qarnayn (prophet and monotheist).
The great poet-thinker always dreamed of a perfect man who should be worthy of God's viceroy on earth. Such a person harmoniously combines worldly and spiritual needs, faith and reason, individual and social interests. He also thought about an ideal social order and a just ruler with worthy moral, spiritual and humane traits. In all parts of five poems “Quintet” he thought about these problems of humanity and drew their most important lines in artistic design. And in the last book the poet completed his mission.

Of the ancient civilizations, Greece, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Babylon, Iran, India and China were distinct for the richness of their cultures. Here, the ancient culture that was in close contact with the East is particularly interesting for its systemization of scientific and philosophical thought. It is no coincidence that European scientific and philosophical thought was based on the Hellenism and Neo-Platonism of an ancient civilization, with Christian values enriching European culture as sources of morality and spirituality. At the same time, Europe was able to contact with the scientific and cultural heritage of Eastern people through that civilization, because the Greeks were in closer touch with the East, naturally in contact with Egypt, Babylon, Mesopotamia and Iran. Pythagoras, for example, studied for 34 years in Egypt, Babylon and probably also in India (Chanishev. p.140). At the same time, "Mathematics and the science of astrology were developed in Babylon. Even in the 4 th millennium BCE, Egyptian science was sufficient to build the pyramids; astrology was also developed there. Egypt had a great influence on Greek culture" (ibid.pp.97-101). "Iranian culture and Zoroastrianism were especially influential on the Greeks" (ibid. p.103). The first religious teachings and prophecies began before Buddhism, with Zoroastrianism, and "the encounters between good and evil in that teaching and the effect on people's lives and processes in the universe influenced Judaism, Christianity, Gnosticism, Buddhism, ancient philosophy and the teachings of Mani" (Granatovskiy.p.281). Then Greek, Egyptian and Near Eastern cultures came together in Alexandria (Sokolov.p.22). We should note that the Greeks also learned of Indian and Chinese culture through Iran; historically, trade, economic and cultural ties between these three ancient Eastern civilizations (Iran, India and China) were more extensive. It is known that the ancient East was a source of science and culture for Greece. Ancient authors were familiar with the scientific and philosophical achievements of Egypt, Babylonia, Mesopotamia and Iran. Nizami recalls that an entire library was transported from Iran for translation into Greek (Sharaf.p.242). He indirectly reminds, even before Alexander's campaign, the Greeks translated "Khiradnameh" (Book of Wisdom) from the ancient Persian language (ibid.p.106). And after the capture of Persia, Alexander, along with caravans of jewelry, sent entire libraries to Greece for translation. The poet clearly says that the sources of the scientific and cultural achievements of Greece were the neighboring countries of the East. According to K. Koroghlu, there were historical social, economic, trade, cultural and religious contacts between ancient Eastern civilizations, stretching from the Amu-Darya to the banks of the Tigris, and Central Asia, Iran and Azerbaijan formed a very important bridge between India and Mesopotamia. There were also notable connections between the epic cultures of Central Asia, Iran and Azerbaijan. This author notes that the oldest and most valuable text, the Avesta, with roots extending back to the 3 rd millennium BCE, was widely known in India, Iran and Azerbaijan (Koroghlu. pp.5-8). Thus, relations between East and the ancient culture receive most attention. V. V. Bartold held that the reason for the Greeks' cultural superiority over other European people was their geographic proximity to those ancient cultural centres in the East, and the features they shared with them . In fact, Greek culture was almost a bridge between Eastern and European/Western civilizations. Naturally, the dialogues between cultures, the mutual effects and benefits, paved the way for the development, evolution and enrichment of each. Multiculturalism has essentially implied universality and enrichment throughout history. Dialogue does not mean the absorption of one culture by another one or its extinction, but co-existence and interaction between them, with equal status. The Islamic civilization that the great Nizami belonged to, embraced different peoples, ethnicities and cultures in a common human identity and brought them together around a universal moral core.
