In 2019 a shipwreck in the Netherlands was re-excavated as part of a training project for archaeology students and volunteers. It was the wreck of a 19 th-century pram-like vessel, loaded with a cargo of what seemed to be household waste. However, analysis of the cargo composition showed a different picture. Based on the specialists' investigations it can be stated that the ship's cargo consisted of various components. These can be traced back to different batches of waste, each of which has its own origin. A part of the cargo consisted of household waste, originating from one or a few reasonably affluent households. A second part comprised construction and demolition waste from an urban context. A third component consisted of industrial waste derived from coal gas production. This find may shift the prevailing picture of waste disposal and transport in the Netherlands.

This contribution examines Venetian neutrality during the Franco-Habsburg confrontation between 1688 and 1714, focusing on the Republic of Venice’s legal and diplomatic strategies amid the Nine Years’ War and the War of the Spanish Succession. While Venetian policy sought to preserve both its territorial integrity and its historical dominio over the Adriatic Sea, the Republic faced significant legal and political challenges from the belligerent powers. Drawing on archival research conducted in Paris and Venice, this study explores the legal frameworks underpinning Venetian neutrality, including treaty obligations, maritime law, and the Republic’s place within the early modern theory and practice of neutrality. The findings highlight how Venice leveraged legal instruments, diplomatic rhetoric, and pragmatic enforcement measures to preserve its sovereignty in an era of European-wide conflict, contributing to broader debates on neutrality and the law of nations in early modern Europe.

The Ribadeo shipwreck, identified as the San Giacomo di Galizia, lost in 1597 at Ribadeo, Galicia, Spain, is a unique example of a late 16th century Spanish warship. Brought to Ribadeo in the winter of 1597, this ship was salvaged, all the crew saved, and its remains abandoned. It was found in November 2011 during dredging operations, and it has been studied since. Excavated slowly at the pace allowed by the conservation budget, this site is revealing its secrets as the excavation progresses. This paper is an introduction to the ship’s history and a first report on the archaeological excavation of its hull remains.

When researching the 1826 Chatterton Massacre, David Gordon Scott found in the archives an account of the North Sands Massacre, Sunderland, 3rd August 1825. The massacre, where five workers were shot dead, has been almost entirely forgotten. This blog provides a brief overview of the massacre and some details of the bicentennial commemorations.

Navigation in general is directing a ship on a voyage or a way to determine the position and direction of travel both on the actual terrain and on the map. Shipping activities are seen as a medium of community communication in one region with other regions. Bugis tribe is one of the nations of the archipelago that is oriented to the sea, and many create a tradition and culture in shipping activities. This journal discusses the roots of bugis navigation in the 17th century that marked the development of Islamic civilization in the midst of the culture of Bugis society. The 17th century in a Bugis society was an era where Islam and culture were integrated but remained in accordance with Islamic values. This can be found in ancient manuscripts sourced from the literature of the Buginese community. The journal also shows that before the advent of modern navigation tools, Bugis sailors relied on their ability and experience to sail, utilizing natural phenomena both in the sky and at sea....

Los puertos como enclaves de intercambios marítimos terrestres han sido y son núcleos propicios para la generación de actividad económica, pero a su vez por su condición de puerto y puerta, también se convierten en centros estratégicos desde el punto de vista económico y militar. Siguiendo esta premisa, la posición geográfica del Puerto de Cádiz, encrucijada de caminos abiertos a África y América, fue decisiva a la hora de convertirse en pieza indispensable de un complejo sistema financiero-comercial de ámbito mundial. A estas ventajas hay que añadirle la benignidad de su clima, como en un pequeño párrafo el comerciante chileno don Nicolás de la Cruz y Bahamonde hace de dicha excelencia durante su viaje a Cádiz en 1783: La ciudad de Cádiz pues, es privilegiada en este punto por la naturaleza. Colocada en una zona templada baxo los grados 36º 31´ 34´´ de latitud norte goza de un apacible y benigno clima. Su localidad dentro de la mar sin abrigo de montañas hace que sea un poco combatida de los vientos, pero sus quatro estaciones se presentan por lo común, sin tocar en los extremos… 1 Durante un largo período de tiempo, nuestra ciudad había aprovechado su situación de puerta del Mediterráneo, así como su cercanía al norte de África, para establecer un fuerte comercio con este. Sin embargo, una vez que se refuerza su posición atlántica debido al desplazamiento progresivo del comercio con el Nuevo Mundo, el papel del puerto cambia. Sin perder nunca de vista sus enlaces mediterráneos, el viraje hacia Occidente se acentuó, reforzando a la par sus vínculos con la Europa noroccidental, y su condición de punta de lanza hacia el Nuevo Mundo fue reforzada por su carácter de cabecera del monopolio español con sus Indias. El Puerto de Cádiz será objeto de nuestra comunicación. Vamos a realizar un amplio recorrido por la historia del puerto en relación a la ciudad y a su bahía, desde los inicios hasta nuestros días, para centrarnos en el análisis de los años que preceden y en los que se dictan las Leyes del Libre Comercio. Con este fin hemos organizado el trabajo de la forma siguiente. Comenzaremos estudiando la evolución que siguió el puerto de la ciudad desde las primeras noticias que nos llegan hasta la actualidad, analizando todo lo referente a su ubicación e infraestructura, estudiando los distintos intentos por crear un puerto más acomodado a las necesidades comerciales, y haremos referencia a las peticiones realizadas por parte de algunos sectores de la sociedad. De forma paralela, abordaremos el papel de relevancia que asume Cádiz a nivel comercial, lo que debió tener repercusión en su infraestructura. Maritime mail represented a central aspect of the development of communication networks in Egypt during the second half of the 19th century. Among the most prominent instruments of this transformation were the Khedivial Mail Steamers, which played a pivotal role in linking Egyptian ports with regional and international trade centers. This study sheds light on the organizational and operational dimensions of these vessels, along with the available postal documents and rare cancellations that reflect the nature of the service, its operational context, and the political and economic environments in which it functioned. The aim of this work is to provide a detailed documentary analysis based on philatelic sources and original postal materials, contributing to a deeper understanding of Egypt's role in maritime postal operations during and beyond the Khedivial era.

The international conference The Mediterranean Through Chinese Eyes: Transcultural Encounters and Representation in Chinese Sources is the second conference of the MeTChE research project. This event aims to investigate how the Mediterranean has been perceived, represented, and reimagined in Chinese sources across time. Bringing together scholars from diverse disciplines, the conference will explore the construction of a transcultural perception of Mediterranean civilization(s) in Chinese geographical texts and travel diaries. Particular attention will be given to how representations of the sea and distant lands contributed to shaping the image of the "other" in Chinese thought.

On many early modern Japanese maps of Japan, a network of lines surrounds the archipelago. These lines designate routes one could take from one harbour to the other. Parallels to this practice also exist in early modern Chinese and Korean maps, making statements about networks, connections, and possible travel paths on sea. Drawing routes over the ocean is a strange thing to do.

In the early eighteenth century, the Kangxi emperor was presented with two maps in Chinese, one each from the officials Gioro Mamboo and Shi Shipiao. The maps showed southern China and Southeast Asia and were based on Dutch charts. The officials presented the maps at a time when the emperor had recently issued a law restricting Chinese trade in Southeast Asia. The map presented by Shi Shipiao adds information about sailing routes and export goods that were subject to the trade restrictions imposed by the emperor. This article argues that rather than being intended to provide a representation of seafaring knowledge, Shi aimed to use the map he presented to convince the emperor to lift the restrictions he had imposed on trade. This therefore provides an example of how maps could be used for political ends. In contrast to many other Chinese maps influenced by European sciences, these two maps show no Jesuit involvement but resemble the Selden Map as well as Japanese and Buginese charts, representing a maritime perspective in the history of knowledge exchange.

This document is the main part of a letter sent to the offfij icers of the Audiencia of Manila in 1620. It addresses the accumulated abscess of the colony's fijinancial situation and the abyssal contrast between private lucre and public expenses. Its particular interest lies in the efffijiciency and vigor of its exposition: the undisclosed administrator of the Council of the Indies, which was presided over at the time by Fernando Carrillo (1617-22), unsurprisingly the former president of the Council of the Treasury (1609-17), seems to explode with anger, denouncing the wrongdoings and unfaithfulness of the Spanish community and more particularly of the royal offfijicers of the Philippines.

A partir de ellas, se ha avanzado mucho en el conocimiento de la historia forestal, sobre todo, en lo referido a su estrecha relación con la de la Real Armada española. Sin ir más lejos, se han incorporado nuevas perspectivas al debate historiográfico, destacando en este sentido las aportaciones procedentes de la geografía histórica y la historia jurídica, sobre todo, después de que la ecología histórica iniciase las discusiones más interesantes, en las décadas de 1980. En el propio marco de la disciplina histórica, los historiadores han hecho a su vez aportaciones importantes al tema estos últimos decenios, en particular, desde el ámbito de la historia naval, al profundizar en la relación de los recursos forestales con la industria naval y los arsenales. Uno de esos recientes esfuerzos ha sido protagonizado por el proyecto ForSeaDiscovery, cuyos resultados han pretendido, gracias al diálogo establecido entre disciplinas como la arqueología, la dendrocronología y la historia, mostrar cuál fue en la Península Ibérica el impacto que la presión de las actividades humanas ejercieron sobre los bosques, cómo éstos fueron utilizados por administraciones y políticas de estado que no tenían en cuenta criterios ambientales 1 . En su origen, los estudios históricos en torno al bosque procedieron a analizar, sin más, la legislación existente, si bien, recientemente, los investigadores han tratado de averiguar cuál habría sido la eficacia de la aplicación de esa legislación, a través del manejo sistemático de documentación judicial y administrativa. Así, se ha puesto de manifiesto que la legislación forestal promovida y aplicada por la Monarquía Hispánica tuvo un desigual éxito: las ordenanzas establecidas en tiempos de los Austrias parece que fueron eficaces en cuanto a la preservación y gestión del monte, al menos en lo que al Cantábrico se refiere, al permitir que en el siglo XVIII existiese allí una riqueza forestal envidiable para el resto de las potencias europeas. Por el contrario, la Real Ordenanza de 1748 fue un fracaso absoluto, pues únicamente estuvo en vigor durante el mandato de su promotor, el Marqués de la Ensenada. Al respecto, la historia jurídica ha abierto una línea de investigación sobre el origen de dicha ordenanza que ha dado sorpresas: si tradicionalmente se pensaba que la Ordenanza francesa de Aguas y Bosques establecida en 1669 por Colbert había sido la fuente esencial de inspiración de la ordenanza de 1748, idea repetida una y otra vez de manera acrítica por la historiografía especializada, hoy es puesta en cuestión. Cada vez son más los investigadores que reclaman un origen autóctono para este cuerpo jurídico, que sintetiza en su seno al menos dos siglos de experiencia legislativa y forestal, la cual se

Debo explicar este anterior concepto, ya que un buen entendimiento del mismo llevará (en mi humilde opinión….) a un mejor entender del material que se halla inserto en este segundo trabajo de investigación . Al hallarme ante un acontecimiento, esto es, todo lo que tiene que ver con la "vida" del inhundible RMS "Titanic", del que sólo sabía o tenía vagas nociones, esto sería, unos pocos comentarios, un par de series de ficción (generalmente de la TV americana) , alguna película no muy bien recordada, el desafío de impregnarme de una temática prácticamente desconocida para mí se me hacía no muy difícil de encarar, aunque quizás largo de efectuar . Pero, y evidentemente, lo anterior no fue exactamente así . Más bien, yo diría que fue algo casi totalmente diferente a lo que mi mente siquiera podía llegar a inferir. Siguiendo con esta explicación, puedo decir que el término "varias" es sumamente exacto, ya que no fue una sola oportunidad en la que tuve que determinar exactamente qué material clasificar, elegir, recortar, ampliar, estudiar y, finalmente, insertar en el primer trabajo de investigación : humildemente, no menos de cincuenta, sesenta o más veces…. Respecto del término "disyuntivas" me planteé este asunto en cuanto a especificar (y no volverse atrás…) sobre qué temática, problemas, interrogantes, soluciones lógicas , etc., habría de estar en condiciones de (fundamentalmente…) prepararme a los fines de tener un buen conocimiento respecto de lo que podría llegar a suceder, tanto con un profesor universitario, un mecánico dental o un operario de la construcción, esto es, proceder a una explicación detallada y fácilmente comprensible del amplio temario que abarca mi primer trabajo de investigación . Ahora bien, teniendo en cuenta lo antes expuesto, se cae de maduro que hubo mucho, pero realmente mucho material que hube de dejar en el camino, habiéndolo así ya haya advertido en la parte dedicada al "Epílogo" del primer trabajo de investigación . /--pores de pasajeros. This paper addresses the underrepresentation of women in Portuguese industrial archaeology through the case of the Robinson cork factory. Traditionally women's roles in industrial environments have been overlooked, influenced, in Portugal, by the conservative mindset of the Estado Novo dictatorship, which promoted the idea that women belonged at home. However, despite this ideology, many women worked in industry due to economic necessity. By incorporating different types of sources and materials, and combining them with physical artefacts found at the archaeological site, this study aims to reconstruct the experiences of female workers. It challenges the binary gender narratives prevalent in Portuguese historiography and archaeology, and highlights the complexities of gender roles in industrial contexts. It supports a critical re-examination of historical sources and archaeological evidence to provide a more inclusive and accurate portrayal of women's roles in industrial history.

In 2009 the UNESCO Office for the Pacific States (UNESCO Apia) hosted a regional meeting in Honiara, Solomon Islands to promote the 2001 UNESCO Convention on the Protection of Underwater Cultural Heritage and to increase the understanding of UCH in the region. As a result of that meeting this publication was produced in 2010 highlighting regional archaeological programs.

This thesis provides the first sustained study of the portraiture of eighteenth-century British naval officers, concentrating on the period between Edward Vernon’s capture of Porto Bello in 1739 and Horatio Nelson’s death at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805. This period was punctuated by a series of major international conflicts, from which Britain emerged as the world’s leading maritime power, boasting a navy unrivalled in size and strength, a burgeoning empire and a celebrated cast of naval officers, many of whom became central protagonists in the nation’s social, political and cultural affairs. The Holy Islamic Tomb at Lingshan Mountain in Quanzhou, China, is believed to be the final resting place of two of the Prophet Muhammad’s disciples who were dispatched as missionaries in the early seventh century. While prior scholarship has centred on verifying the tradition’s chronology, this article foregrounds the role of environmental actors in the tomb site’s ascent to prominence. I argue that the holy tomb (shengmu) tradition did not emerge until the late sixteenth and early seventeenth century, so its invention should be analysed alongside concurrent climate hazards that plagued late Ming China (1368–1644). Uncommon episodes of snowfall, flooding, drought, and associated famines drove Quanzhou’s local communities towards popular religious practices. Muslim visitation practices in Quanzhou, which experienced a restrained period following the decline of Mongol rule, re-emerged into universal consciousness and became integral to the city’s spiritual landscape by aligning with Chinese allegorical narratives. Through this reinvented tradition, the Holy Islamic Tomb was characterized as a site blessed by the heavens during times of cosmic disturbances. Instead of passive assimilation, through which religious identities may be diluted, the active participation of Quanzhou Muslims in local practices empowered them to elevate and honour Islamic traditions within a predominantly non-Muslim society.

Flint knappers were at risk of silicosis, and died on average in their mid-forties, thirty years younger than would be expected. Similar high mortality has been found in the masons who worked the sandstone for Edinburgh New Town, and there was probably an epidemic amongst those who built Norfolk's famous flint churches in the later Middle Ages.

This paper argues that historians have all but ignored the study of rivers and their impact on the development of human society. Apart from a somewhat terse acknowledgment of the importance of rivers in the development of ancient civilizations, from the Huang He to the Ganges, the Nile, and the Amazon, historians have by and large limited themselves to studying individual rivers, while ignoring the potential of comparative analysis of rivers. I call for a broader engagement by historians of all aspects of rivers, including their role in transportation, fishing, agriculture, industry, recreation, and the environment, people's cultural response to rivers, and the legal regimes that have grown up around them, with special reference to the role of rivers as political boundaries.

Among the many things we take for granted today is the ability to preserve fruit, vegetables, and meats through refrigeration and to slake our thirst with cold and iced beverages. The association of ice and food in northerly or high-altitude climates where it forms naturally is of considerable antiquity. The Chinese used ice to preserve food three millennia ago. It was also used by the Romans of Nero's day and, as Fernand Braudel relates, in the age of Philip II it was a luxury appreciated the length and breadth of the Mediterranean world, refreshing Spanish courtiers, Maltese knights and Ottomanjanissaries. While enterprising merchants could peddle small quantities of ice over short distances, the long-distance carriage of ice in bulk was pioneered in the nineteenth century by Frederic Tudor. A Boston merchant of unwavering vision and endless drive, Tudor "introduced the world to refrigeration and thus transformed the way we eat and drink and live." His rise was far from smooth. He shipped his first ice in 1806 to Martinique, but it was not until the 1820s that his business achieved stability. In the meantime, he was arrested three times for debt and jailed twice. Even after his business affairs were on an even keel, he lost hundreds of thousands of dollars speculating in coffee in the 1840s. Nevertheless, when the Tudor Ice Company was chartered in 1860, it was valued at $1.3 million and Tudor's reach was global, stretching from the ice ponds of eastern Massachusetts and Maine to southern US ports, Havana, South America, India and East Asia. The details of so complex and esoteric an enterprise would make for a fascinating biography. Instead, the authors focus mainly on Tudor's personal difficulties with his friends, relations and business associates. These three groups comprise "the circle" of the book's subtitle. The result is a farrago of vignettes, many of which would have been better left to footnotes or omitted altogether. Thus, the authors sketch the career of Tudor's great nephew Charles Steward Parnell, the Irish patriot, although thanks to the estrangement of Tudor and his sister it seems unlikely the two ever met. Yet details on the number of ships in the Tudor fleet -whether, in fact, the vessels were owned or chartered -are lacking. The fact that Tudor shipped ice to Singapore is mentioned only in passing two pages from the end of the book; that his ice was known in Persia and China goes unremarked. Nameless rivals in the ice trade crop up from time to time, but there is no indication of the growth, volume or value of the ice trade in Tudor's hands or generally. The authors cannot be held to account too firmly for these deficiencies. Both coauthors died more than four years before the book's publication; it was ushered into print thanks to the efforts of Alan Seaburg. The resulting work has the feel of notes cobbled together without the benefit of a unifying theme. Tudor's contribution to the technological revolution of the nineteenth century was considerable and it certainly deserves to be better known than it is. If this book does nothing more than stimulate further research into the dynamics of the ice trade, it will have been worth the effort. But a more succinct and focussed account of Tudor's career remains Henry G. Pearson's "Frederic Tudor, Ice King," published in the Proceedings ofthe Massachusetts Historical Society in 1933 -not 1940 as is indicated in the notes.

En primer lugar, me gustaría agradecer a la revista Temas Americanistas, una vez más, por su confianza en abrir un espacio para exponer un tema tan interesante y tan profundo como es la locura. Nos gustaría recordar que tenemos una larga y fructífera relación con la revista, la cual nos ha apoyado en diversas ocasiones, como lo fue con el monográfico sobre "El Sueño: análisis multidiscipinar", publicado en el número 45 (2020), o con el dedicado a "La Muerte: pasado y presente", que vio la luz en el volumen 41 (2018). Para nosotros es un verdadero placer, y estamos profundamente agradecidos por divulgar las investigaciones que proponemos. Pero, y, sobre todo, el trabajo en conjunto con diversas miradas históricas, disciplinares, que enriquecen el diálogo y que son una oportunidad para trabajar entre universidades y áreas académicas, como es el presente monográfico, el cual recoge propuestas ciertamente innovadoras. "Historia de la locura en América: cuerpos y almas desobedientes" será una lectura sumamente grata, multidisciplinar y con unas investigaciones que nos dan una visión única de la locura. Por una parte, vamos a comenzar viendo una perspectiva, podríamos decir de la historia de la locura en México, una reflexión genérica que se presenta en esta introducción, que nos sirva de hilo conductor de la locura, que empieza desde la época prehispánica y llega hasta nuestros días. El monográfico reflexiona sobre la locura, como ya lo han hecho anteriormente autores clásicos como Aristóteles o Descartes, la escuela estoica, podríamos hablar también de la época medieval y sus conceptos sobre las enfermedades relacionadas con la locura o los humores y la herencia de los clásicos griegos, posteriormente traducida por los árabes y trasladada al Nuevo Mundo. This article examines the Nautical Magazine and its relationship with the Hydrographic Office of the British Admiralty in the early nineteenth century. It suggests how the magazine functioned as an organ for the dissemination and collection of useful knowledge in its endeavour to improve the Royal and Merchant navies. The periodical also presented the work of an emergent maritime science community in the Hydrographic Office, and served as a forum for the encouragement of engagement with naval science. Using archival material from the Hydrographic Office, which refers to, or was reproduced in the magazine, the article explores some of the ambiguities of a journalistic venture supported by the state in a period in which the organization and role of key public institutions were being redefined.

This workshop aims to revisit the study of the political cultures of early modernity in Euro-American spaces from a historical-conceptual and interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account the contributions of R. Koselleck, Q. Skinner, G. Duso, J. Fernández Sebastián and E. Palti, among other authors. The present reflection focuses on two aspects: firstly, the role played by the processes of reception and re-appropriation of the Ancients – in particular the Greco-Roman, Hebrew and Christian traditions – in the shaping of political communities (of their histories, identities and otherness) between the sixteenth and eighteenth centuries.
Secondly, the study of public spaces and dynamics will be addressed from a post-Habermasian approach (F. Benigno, F. De Vivo, H. Hermant, S. Landi, M. Rospocher, M. Olivari, etc.), by exploring the emergence of diverse communicational transactions within the framework of a European geopolitics of interconnected transatlantic networks.

Reconstructing the Sramana history of Kerala is being herculean task by the absence of sufficient sources. High density of population led rapid urbanization leading encroachment and obliteration of evidence is one of the main reasons. Furthermore, most of the monuments were constructed with the perishable wooden materials. To compound the problem still further, research into historical archaeology focusing on systematic, problem-oriented explorations and excavations are very few and far between. Moreover, the impartial addressing of historical problem based on systematic analysis and interpretation of available sources are hardly find in any of the previous researches. Against this backdrop, present study based on native and extra-native sources associating Jainism with Perumals of Kerala may have a significant bearing on the historical development of Kerala. Those records may shed fresh light into the dark corners of not only Jainism but other non-Brahmin belief systems thus can a landmark in the politicoreligious history of medieval Kerala.

Navigation in general is directing a ship on a voyage or a way to determine the position and direction of travel both on the actual terrain and on the map. Shipping activities are seen as a medium of community communication in one region with other regions. Bugis tribe is one of the nations of the archipelago that is oriented to the sea, and many create a tradition and culture in shipping activities. This journal discusses the roots of bugis navigation in the 17th century that marked the development of Islamic civilization in the midst of the culture of Bugis society. The 17th century in a Bugis society was an era where Islam and culture were integrated but remained in accordance with Islamic values. This can be found in ancient manuscripts sourced from the literature of the Buginese community. The journal also shows that before the advent of modern navigation tools, Bugis sailors relied on their ability and experience to sail, utilizing natural phenomena both in the sky and at sea....
