Abstract

Baba-Nyonya community is a community of Chinese descent living in Malaysia and practices lifestyle of the Malay community. They have adjusted to the way of life and socio-cultural influences of their surroundings and create a culture of its own. Till now the Baba-Nyonya still follow the taboo practices and beliefs of the Malays and Chinese in their daily lives. Most previous studies discuss about Baba's everyday cultural practices but less touching on the tradition and superstitious taboo practices which they practice before and during the Chinese New Year celebrations which is also celebrated by the Baba community. Thus, this study aims to identify the tradition and superstitious taboos practiced by the Baba community before and during Chinese New Year celebrations. In addition, the study explores the social meanings behind the tradition and superstitious taboos. Based on qualitative method, this study conducted in-depth interviews and non-participant observation on six Baba-Nyonya informants in Malacca. The results showed that the Baba community practices numerous tradition and superstitious taboos from the days before and during Chinese New Year celebration. In terms of social meaning, the taboos are seen as a way to preserve the well-being and social control of the community.
