Uma das agudezas de Espinosa consiste em fazer uso de termos da tradição e dar
a eles novas cores, subvertendo-os. Com efeito, Deus, conceito-chave em seu sistema, equivale
a natureza ou substância. Não ato puro e transcendente, como em Tomás de Aquino, mas
imanente. Direito, por seu turno, é o mesmo que potentia, derivado da potência absoluta da
substância ou natureza. Tese que, importa sublinhar, estiola por completo a divisão estanque
direito natural versus direito positivo, visto que todo direito é por definição potência, sendo,
por esta razão, o direito natural em estado de natureza mera opinião, como escreve no Tratado
político. O mesmo se dá com outros conceitos, tais como liberdade e afetos. O objetivo do artigo
é tratar de um conceito menos frequentado pelos comentadores, mas que, hipótese que será
defendida, é igualmente reconceitualizado por Espinosa. Trata-se do conceito de justiça. O foco
inicial será Tomás de Aquino, como autor paradigmático da tradição que analisa o conceito de
justiça. Isto para, por contraste, explicitar em quê Espinosa modifica a definição. Com este
objetivo, o escólio 2 da Proposição 37 da Parte IV da Ética será analisado à luz do sistema
espinosano. Isso implica que outras partes do corpus serão movimentadas para a compreensão
deste excerto central da Ética quanto ao tema da justiça. A questão-chave que norteará a
exposição será a seguinte: Espinosa possui um conceito de justiça? Se sim, ele se distancia da
tradição, aqui representada por Tomás de Aquino? Por fim, trata-se de investigar se há um, e
apenas um, conceito de justiça espinosano.

Translation of psychoanalytic texts is notoriously complex, amplified by differences between Western languages/cultures and China. Freud labelled translation "traitorous". A current challenge is the trend among some professional translators to diminish or eliminate hierarchies of accurate and inaccurate translations. We argue for accurate translation to transmit psychoanalytic concepts in Mandarin Chinese. The English Standard Edition involved unfortunate choices to "Latinize" key Freudian terms; for example, Es, Ich and Überich were rendered as Id, Ego and Supergo, instead of more experience-near common language equivalents in English, "it, I and over I." Similarly, some recent translations of German and English psychoanalytic terms into Mandarin Chinese have also tended to perpetuate intellectualized distancing from Freud's original vivid words. Here, we focus on seven critical terms for core psychoanalytic concepts: Ich/I, Es/it, Überich/ superego, Transference (Übertragung), Countertransference (Gegenübertragung), Psyche/Soul (Psyche/Seele), psychoanalysis and (surprisingly) schizophrenia. We suggest that the currently popular oral-aural translations from English into Mandarin perpetuate distancing and lead to mis-translations that obscure our foundational concepts. We propose alternative Mandarin translations for some terms and discuss the broader cultural challenges involved in transmitting the heart (and soul) of psychoanalysis with Chinese colleagues.

This paper examines the changes in the super-ego and the typical pathologies observed in contemporary clients. It traces the evolution from the conflict neuroses of the Victorian era, in which the ego feared a strict and moralistic super-ego, to the narcissistic culture characterized by narcissistic disorders, self-love, and the narcissistic ego ideal. The paper then explores the shift to a perverse culture, where the super-ego is "dismantled," all values and authorities are undermined, and the exploitation of others, as well as the recruitment of others into one's own exploitation, has become normalized. The paper concludes by raising critical questions about the necessary theoretical and technical adjustments required to adapt psychotherapeutic practice to these emerging cultural shifts.

This paper explores the connection between various forms of anxiety and panic attacks and deficits in the development of core emotional competencies: neutralization, mentalization, object wholeness and object constancy, tolerance of ambivalence and frustration, will, and initiative. These competencies represent fundamental emotional processing and regulation capacities that enable individuals to cope with life's challenges and the emotions they evoke. When underdeveloped, each of these competencies gives rise to a specific form of anxiety: a deficit in neutralization leads to anxiety related to emotional overload and loss of control; impaired mentalization is associated with social anxiety and misinterpretation of one's own and others' actions; a lack of object wholeness results in persecutory anxiety and fear of disillusionment or guilt when love and aggression are directed toward the same object; compromised object constancy underlies separation anxiety; low frustration tolerance manifests as anxiety in the face of unmet needs; insufficient ambivalence tolerance produces decisionmaking anxiety; a weakened will leads to anxiety around self-support and persistence; and deficits in initiative evoke fears of visibility, rivalry, and symbolic "castration anxiety." These distinct anxieties are frequently observed in clients suffering from one of the eight identified types of panic attacks. Identifying the specific fears associated with each underdeveloped emotional competency allows clinicians to detect areas of deficit and focus therapeutic work on unlocking and strengthening the relevant capacity, using targeted techniques outlined in the taxonomy of therapeutic goals within OLI Integrative Psychodynamic Psychotherapy.

Individuals demonstrate defensive mechanisms. The current study refers to the immature defense mechanisms of learners. It aims to investigate how immature defense mechanisms among learners, especially those of emerging adults, impair self-regulated learning. We analyze how immature defense mechanisms can affect the different processes of self-regulated learning based on the Defense Mechanisms Rating Scales (DMRS) and Zimmerman's cyclical model of self-regulated learning. This study shows that using immature defensive mechanisms may not only have a negative influence on the activated self-efficacy beliefs of the learner but also on the subsequent processes of the forethought, performance, and self-reflection phases of self-regulated learning. The consequence is a suppressed awareness of learning, which increases as the adaptiveness of defenses decreases. This research reveals the close connection between self-regulated learning and ego development, emphasizing the strong role of an educated ego for learning that obtains pleasure while acknowledging reality.

By the 1930s, a number of critical theorists were turning to psychoanalysis to understand how objective social forces are implicated subjectively, that is, in the development of consciousness. For Theodor Adorno, in particular, Freud was an important resource, because the lure of authoritarianism and the rise of fascism cried for explanation. The Freudian theory on which Adorno relied, however, is rife with problems of bias, sexism, Eurocentrism, and contradiction, and it has since been displaced by a number of different approaches. These include the more liberal traditions of developmental psychology (on which second generation critical theorists drew when they drew on psychoanalysis at all) and object-relations theory, which eclipsed Adorno’s Marxian, dialectical analyses. This paper returns to the Adornian problematic in order to clarify what psychoanalytic theory can and cannot offer to critical theory, and to identify which of the post-Freudian theories might prove fruitful now. I consider the object-relations theories of Melanie Klein and Donald Winnicott that are championed by Amy Allen and Axel Honneth (respectively), and the revised Freudianism that Joel Whitebook adopts. I argue that these approaches are limited to agent-structure and/or subject-object dualisms, and that they are therefore inadequate theoretical resources. In contrast, Jean Laplanche’s account of “primal seduction” can illuminate the psychological mechanisms and processes by virtue of which individuals are driven [getrieben] to replicate relations of domination that contradict their own interests. It thus constitutes the theoretical tool that Adorno originally sought.

Bibliotherapy is a therapeutic method in the field of Art therapy, which suggests focusing the therapeutic dialogue on a literary text, either written or read. This text functions within the therapeutic dialogue as a "third voice", in addition to the voices of the patient and the therapist, and takes part in the dialogue as an autonomous interlocutor. The idea of such a "third voice" is based on the assumption that a literary text has therapeutic qualities of its own, which can be applied in therapeutic processes and can contribute to their progress.

Ibsen, as a playwright, as Thomas F. Van Lann comments, has been accused of deceiving his audience regarding the matters of his play- both its central business and its manner; particularly in his style and mode. While reviewing Ibsen through a Lacanian lens, critics such as Oliver W. Gerland III, argue that reading Ibsen is a task of revising interpretative paradigms and that Ibsen’s protagonist revises strategies for enacting the “self”. The Wild Duck (1884), has been critiqued as a poignant drama of illusions, where an idealistic outsider’s gratuitous truth-telling destroys a family. This paper argues that Ibsen’s texts stage the Oedipal crisis in a revised form by taking recourse to Lacan’s re-reading of Freud, where he suggests a paradigmatic triad as a representation of the displaced form of familar Oedipal structure. The psychic is not homogeneous, uniforms, undifferentiated, linear, but it is present in various forms. It has a great functional and existential differentiation and uniformity. It manifests itself in the form of conscious psyche, subconscious and unconscious. The relationship between them, their harmony or conflict, determines the originality of human nature. The unconscious as a form of the psyche constitutes the most controversial level of organization of psychical life. It is stated that psychology stopped placing the notion of conscience in the center of its theoretical and practical preoccupations, making place for the unconscious. The unconscious is not only whatever became automatism, but also what I suppress. Freud explains suppression by a conflict between Superego (which represents the childhood interdictions which became interiorized) and Id, the natural pulsations which we were taught in childhood to blame. Freud urges us, through this, to regain the conscience of what is unconscious. The Superego is a necessary stage in the forming of moral conscience, but it should not be mistaken for the moral conscience itself. The genuine moral conscience does not reduce itself to the Superego. A psychological explanation of the origin of the Superego does not replace the foundation of the moral conscience. Psycho-analysis cannot account for values.

This paper sets out to interpret Tran Duc Thao's two major works, Phenomenology & Dialectical Materialism and Investigations into the Origins of Language & Consciousness. My underlying question concerns the connection between an epistemic framework and the normative implications that arise from it. That is, how can objectivity be determined while holding onto the determination of such objectivity as value-laden? A materialist theory of knowledge, the founding ground for a materialist politics, does not mask its normative commitments, yet clings to its method as that which properly determines objectivity itself. Tran Duc Thao provides for a productive point of departure to solve this dilemma: the critical unification of the phenomenological project and the Marxian one.

In this paper, I start by pointing out that despite their differences, Slavoj Žižek and Karen Barad share an understanding of the notions of relationality, processuality, and immanence as central tenets of materialist philosophy. As I argue, however, it is collectivity that acts in both Žižek's and Barad's works as a safety valve that lends immanence, processuality, and relationality their materialist quality. To support this argument, I demonstrate that certain forms of collectivity underlie the passage from Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty to Niels Bohr's indeterminacy in Barad's interpretation of Bohr's 'philosophy-physics'. However, I claim that there is a further form of collectivity, which I call 'collectivity as inclusive and holistic overdetermination', that Barad overlooks and that conditions the indeterminability of indeterminacy. As I argue, the latter also has implications for political agency. I conclude by briefly sketching out how these forms of collectivity can determine the production of subjectivity and, as a consequence, shape the subject's collective action. In this article, I attempt, first, to rethink the concept of collectivity within the framework of new materialisms. To do so, I take into account Karen Barad's, one of this movement's figureheads, agential materialism. Thereby, I demonstrate how collectivity permeates-both intentionally and unintentionally-Barad's conceptualisation of matter, the way that matter is structured, and, lastly, the relationship between the different material elements. Nevertheless, this article has a further second objective, namely, to show how collectivity is an essential part of any thinking of materialism. By rethinking materialism as what I have called elsewhere "a collective science," 1 my aim is to rehabilitate both materialism and collectivity as a way of thought and mode of practice that opposes a differential and inclusive, i.e., collective understanding of subjectivity to the liberal and solipsist understanding of 1

Freud considered only patients with a functioning ego as suitable for psychoanalysis. In the succeeding years, pioneering analysts such as Klein, Meltzer, Winnicott, Rosenfeld, Steiner, Ogden, Bion have extended the criteria to patients 'whose material is on the "very edge of representability"' (p. 2). Richard Rusbridger uses this phrase of Freud's in his discussion of Ignes Sodre's work with a patient whose trauma is 'on the very edge of representability'. He goes on to say that this is analytic work in areas that are on, or beyond the boundary of, 'what language can capture and into experiences that cannot, or can barely, be symbolized'. He adds 'just how an analyst comes to give "representability" to trauma that a patient cannot remember but instead repeats is an interesting question and a mysterious process'. In Truth and the Unconscious in Psychoanalysis, Civitarese suggests it is possible to work with patients whose disturbance is even earlier and more hidden in the unconscious, patients who experienced trauma in the pre-representational, even the uterine, stage of development. He also goes on to describe the particular nature of such an analytic relationship. But he does not talk of the effect on the analyst, something Rusbridger notes. In the beginning of his comments on Ignes Sodre's paper 'Voices off', which includes such patient material, he writes: 'There are places where few people, and few analysts, can bear to go or are equipped to go' (Sodre, 2015, p. 1).

La interpretación psicoanalítica de los cuentos de hadas ofrece una importante vía para entender el inconsciente y su lenguaje simbólico, siendo su estudio complementario a otros materiales determinados por el inconsciente, tales como el chiste, los sueños y los mitos. 

El presente trabajo viene a llenar un vacío en relación a un análisis sistemático y coordinado de los aportes realizados por los psicoanalistas pioneros en esta área, que, pese a su distancia en el tiempo, continúan siendo una fuente fresca de conocimiento hasta nuestros días.

Discusses Freud's initial emphasis on infantile memories of actual seductions as the etiology for later neurosis. Outlined are Freud's views on the traumatic nature of the early sexual experience, on who commits the assault, and on how the encounter was experienced. It is argued that continued emphasis on the role of infantile seduction would have hampered the psychoanalytic investigation of spontaneous infantile sexuality. Freud attributed a screening and oedipal function to reported seduction scenes only if it seemed clear that the seduction as reported had not actually occurred. Freud's later theorizing made infantile seduction and the dynamics of infantile sexuality coexisting sources of neurosis.

T he author suggests that contemporary enthusiasm for cognitive-behavioural therapy reflects our longing for swift, rational help for psychological suffering. Competition for funding threatens the psychoanalytic presence in the public sector. T he psychoanalytic and cognitive-behavioural models are contrasted, and the relative richness of the psychoanalytic paradigm outlined. T he author suggests that a cognitive model is commonsensical, but less complex, with less potential explanatory and therapeutic power. S he discusses how the analytic stance is always under pressure to 'collapse' into simpler modes, one of which resembles a cognitive one. T his also occurs inevitably, she argues, when attempts are made to 'integrate' the two models. Cognitive and 'integrated' treatments nevertheless have the advantage that they are less intrusive and hence more acceptable to some patients. Selected empirical process and outcome research on cognitive and psychoanalytic therapies is discussed. Brief psychotherapies of either variety have a similar, modestly good outcome, and there is some evidence that this may be based more on 'dynamic' than 'cognitive' elements of treatment. Formal outcome studies of more typical psychoanalytic psychotherapy and of psychoanalysis itself begin to suggest that these long and complex treatments are effective in the more comprehensive ways predicted by the model.

The objective of the experiment is to investigate the possible anti-angiogenic activity of Zizyphus spinachristi leaves extracts. The leaves were dried and grounded into fine powder, and extracted successively with Petroleum ether, chloroform, methanol and water. Ex vivo rat aorta anti-angiogenesis assay was used to identify the most active anti-angiogenic extract. The most active extract has been chosen for dose response study. Free radical scavenging activity has been tested by 1,1 Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) to detect which extract has the highest free radical scavenging activity to help determine the possible mechanism of action. Methanol extract was the most biologically active extract in terms of blood vessels growth inhibition in comparison with petroleum ether, chloroform and water extracts (P˂ 0.05). Enmarcaré mi exposición siguiendo los textos freudianos tales como Introducción del Narcisismo, escrito en 1914 y Duelo y melancolía, redactado un año más tarde. Este último es considerado, en parte, como una continuación de su escrito sobre el narcisismo. Me serviré, además, de la teoría libidinal presente en aquella época de la obra freudiana para describir el proceso que obliga a quitar la libido de los objetos, la libido convertida en narcisista, que no puede encontrar el camino de regreso hacía los objetos y desde allí, un devenir patógeno de ese proceso.

Two central dimensions in psychotherapeutic work are a therapist's empathy with clients and challenging their judgments. We investigated how they influence psychophysiological responses in the participants. Data were from psychodynamic therapy sessions, 24 sessions from 5 dyads, from which 694 therapist's interventions were coded. Heart rate and electrodermal activity (EDA) of the participants were used to index emotional arousal. Facial muscle activity (electromyography) was used to index positive and negative emotional facial expressions. Electrophysiological data were analyzed in two time frames: (a) during the therapists' interventions and (b) across the whole psychotherapy session. Both empathy and challenge had an effect on psychophysiological responses in the participants. Therapists' empathy decreased clients' and increased their own EDA across the session. Using 58 audio-recorded sessions of psychoanalysis (coming from two analysts and three patients) as data and conversation analysis as method, this article shows how psychoanalysts deal with patients' responses to interpretations. After the analyst offers an interpretation, the patient responds. At that point (in the third position), the analysts recurrently modify the tenor of the description from what it was in the patients' responses. They intensify the emotional valence of the description, or they reveal layers of the patients' experience other than those that the patient reported. Both are usually accomplished in an implicit, nonmarked way, and they discreetly index possible opportunities for the patients to modify their understandings of the initial interpretation. The uses of formulation in cognitive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis were compared, by means of conversation analysis, using 53 audio-recorded sessions as data. Two formulation types were found in both approaches: highlighting formulations, which recycle the client's descriptions and recognize therapeutically dense material, and rephrasing formulations, which offer the therapist's version of the client's description and focus on subjective experiences. These formulations may be interactional bearers of common factors in psychotherapy. Two other formulation types were exclusive to one or another approach. Relocating formulations, found only in psychoanalysis, propose that the experiences in the client's narratives are connected to experiences at other times or places. Exaggerating formulations, found only in cognitive psychotherapy, exaggerate the client's talk by recasting it as something that is apparently implausible. The contrast between relocating and exaggerating formulations suggests that, despite recent theories in the two approaches being more compatible, interactional differences still exist between cognitive psychotherapy and psychoanalysis. In the past 10 years, conversation analysis (CA) has made a specific contribution to the understanding of psychotherapy interaction by describing its sequential organization: how the therapist and the client construct their turns in relation to the other's turns Peräkylä, Antaki, Vehviläinen, & Leudar, 2008). However, the differences and similarities between different therapeutic approaches have not been investigated (for a recent exception, see . This paper takes a feminist approach to rethinking the significance of user-device interaction, attachments and dependency. It suggests that Jean Laplanche's resignificantion of 'seduction', the function of the 'enigmatic message', and reconfiguration of sexuality as a 'charge and tension', are particularly useful for theorising the relationship that smartphones, as digital objects, have to unconscious sexuality and psychic life. The paper suggests that the draw of user-device interactions is connected to the rhythms of unconscious sexuality and that this opens up the space for thinking beyond subject-object dichotomies and ultimately offers hope for a shift in the cultural imaginary.

Questo articolo cerca di sviluppare una concezione psicoanalitica dell'abitare, prendendo in considerazione le variazioni dello spazio che si possono osservare nella clinica del trauma e nell'esperienza artistica.
Dopo aver presentato una prima definizione psicoanalitica dell'abitare come "produzione psichica dello spazio", in relazioni alle posizioni di S. Freud e di J. Lacan, il libro di Philippe Lançon La traversata viene utilizzato come riferimento clinico per mettere in evidenza le variazioni tra diversi tipi di spazio.
Tre tipi di spazio sono reperiti e presentati a livello metapsicologico: lo spazio in 3 dimensioni (3D) costruito dall'io; lo spazio in due dimensioni (2D) che si manifesta al soggetto, in particolare nel riemergere ripetitivo delle scene traumatiche; infine, l'esperienza artistica (intesa sia nell'atto della creazione, che nella ricezione), richiede di essere pensata a livello topologico e, quindi, in quattro dimensioni (4D).
Questi tre tipi di spazio devono essere pensati in relazione tra loro, soprattutto a causa del legame muto e vertiginoso fra 2D e 4D. Vengono presentati e discussi differenti modelli di articolazione, permettendo di volta in volta di individuare le sfide terapeutiche ed etiche dei diversi orientamenti clinici. Facendo ciò è possibile presentare tre successive definizioni di un approccio psicoanalitico all' abitare.
La dimensione spaziale della clinica del trauma è ancora relativamente poco studiata. Eppure, offre delle preziose piste d'intervento e di invenzione clinica, soprattutto se si considera l'apporto dell'esperienza artistica. L'enigmatica nozione di abitare può essere intesa in in ultima analisi come il modo in cui questi tre spazi sono prodotti dalla struttura dell'inconscio.

first off what kind of opportunities there are for undergraduates to research with you? Walker: Sure. I actually just moved my lab here from Boston in the past September [2007], so my lab is not fully built, so now the opportunities are a total of zero, since I haven't a lab. But it will arrive, it will be built, in August. At that point we will be looking for bright but committed people, because sleep research-unlike some other aspects of psychology where you can pull people any time of day to sit them down and do some tests, stick them inside a brain scanner, monitor brain activity, etc.-we tend to be much more intensive. They have to come in and get wired up to electrodes, have their whole night recorded, or we deprive them of sleep completely and keep them up all of the next day, take them out on walks, you name it. For people that get involved, it's a weird type of involvement, that requires so much more than just, you know, okay you're going to be testing subjects between four and six P.M. and everything is golden after that. But hopefully what they get is something a little more rewarding, because they are seriously immersed in the research. So they have to be very interested in sleep, to the point of irony because what you end up trying to study is the same thing you have to deprive yourself of to actually understand what it is you are trying to study. There's this delightful paradox in the whole world of sleep research. But we think it's very exciting and I'm not trying to be arrogant, but we tend to be idea rich and hand poor, meaning we usually have many more ideas than we have people to carry out our ideas. So, the more people we can get interested and bring on board the better. Walker: Well definitely we need them too, but the nice thing is that we pay rather handsomely. Some of you guys will deliberately go without sleep for a night for whatever reasons you've got, and we'll pay people anywhere between $80 and $150 to stay up all night. If they want to complete their essay in that time, they are going to do anyway so why not get paid for it? And then we'll just, well, use and abuse you in psychological terms, stick you in brain scanners and such, but that's a small price to pay. So that's where we are at in terms of the lab and where it's set up, so come August we'll hopefully be firing on all cylinders. BSJ: Unlike the brains of the people you will be testing.

Abstract
Multiple psychotherapy approaches for schizophrenia spectrum disorders were evaluated as evidence-based and even held as gold-standard treatments by the general psychiatric community. However, none of the treatments were found to produce consistently strong effect sizes in randomized clinical trials, and none were found to be effective as standalone treatments. A major criticism of the existing treatments was that they focused exclusively on direct intervention rather than using the therapeutic relationship as the major vehicle for change. The qualitative study explored the lived experiences of individuals who suffered from schizophrenia and psychotic disorders. The study focused on what the participants felt was helpful or unhelpful in their relationship with their treating psychotherapists. Justification for focusing on relational dynamics and interventions was based on the work of Kingdon et al. (2004) and Norcross (2019), who found that relational dynamics served as a major mechanism for change across all diagnostic boundaries. A group of 16 participants was interviewed to identify common themes regarding what they found to be helpful in achieving remission from their psychotic illness.

Embodiment or embodied awareness is a way of understanding the body. The body is not simply the external body, the body is the lived body. Both the 10 th century Kashmir philosopher Abhinavagupta and the contemporary French phenomenologist Merleau Ponty have a similar view of the lived body, or better 'lived' embodiment. A person may have a most beautiful external objective body but minimally lived in. Embodiment allows us to understand and conceive of the body as a way of living, experiencing and of perceiving through the medium of our embodiment. The body is the medium of the field. A person perceives not simply through eyes and ears alone, but through the whole body. Our body is an instrument of perception. Our body is an instrument of knowingness. The embodiment of awareness is the lived embodying of primordial awareness that liberates our being in the world. The embodiment of awakened awareness pulsates in resonance with and within Being itself.
