espaço, representação e poder no mundo romano essas imagens, mas também sua relação com os lugares em que se encontram e o contexto da sua dedicação, é revelador sobre o modo com que Cícero (Dom., 108) apresenta as duas (estátuas das) deusas. Libertas, em De domo, é a pulchra Libertas, associada à licentia de P. Clódio Pulcher, uma deusa privada e ilegítima instalada em uma propriedade privada -a domus de um cidadão -, cuja dedicação foi feita irregularmente. Concordia, por sua vez, é a boa deusa que reside em um templum devida e legitimamente consagrado, e a estátua é legítima. É uma deusa pública, presidindo o senado no forum romanum. O corpus ciceroniano é uma referência inescapável para o estudo da história religiosa, política e intelectual romana. Cícero delimita e ressignifica conceitualmente os espaços, as personagens, as práticas e as instituições religiosas romanas no século I AEC. 2 Interessome especificamente pelo papel das estátuas de deuses na obra de Cícero, com ênfase nos conteúdos sobre a imagem e a presença dos deuses, que são constantes em sua obra filosófica, seus discursos e sua correspondência. Cícero revela a estreita conexão entre religião e política na Roma tardo-republicana, trazendo questões pertinentes à construção, uso e recepção de estátuas divinas em diferentes contextos políticos e religiosos. O discurso De domo é uma das peças mais queridas do próprio Cícero, como ele afirma em Epistulae ad Atticum (4, 2, 2). 3 Na modernidade, durante muito tempo, o De domo foi considerado um 2 As inovações religiosas de Cícero e de outros autores tardo-republicanos têm sido intensamente estudadas, e algumas referências fundamentais são Ando (2008); Gildenhard (2011); Rüpke (2012); Santangelo (2013); North (2014); e Macrae (2016). 3 Para uma visão geral do discurso De domo sua, especialmente no que tange à sua recepção, ver Scheidegger-Lâmmle (2017). A questão religiosa está no cerne do discurso e a principal estratégia de Cícero foi demonstrar que a dedicação não era válida por ter sido feita à revelia dos procedimentos institucionais romanos, bem como que o dedicante seria indigno de uma ação religiosa propriamente dita. 11 Em De domo, a religião pública tornase um campo de batalha. Cícero tinha, obviamente, um objetivo muito prático no discurso: a restituição da sua casa. Diante de experts religiosos, os "litigantes" Cícero e Clódio eram, ambos, atores política e religiosamente legítimos. 12 A primeira parte do discurso visa a desacreditar Clódio politicamente (Dom., 3-31), e o próprio Cícero nomeia essa seção como uma digressão (Dom., 3; 32). Uma grave dificuldade era o sentimento compartilhado de que algo dedicado aos deuses não podia ser reclamado por um ser humano. Provavelmente havia apreensões religiosas entre os senadores, daí terem remetido o caso aos pontífices. Cícero é cauteloso no discurso, 9 A casa era muito valiosa em termos simbólicos e econômicos. Sobre este ponto, ver principalmente Berg (1997). Para Cícero (Att., 3, 15, 6; 3, 20, 2; Fam., 14, 2, 3; Dom., 100; 143; 147), seu retorno e restauração não seriam completos sem a recuperação integral de sua casa. Sobre a lei que chamou Cícero de volta a Roma e garantiu a reconstrução da casa no Palatino e de duas villae depredadas por Clódio, ver Cícero (Har. resp., 11) e Plutarco (Cic., 33, 4). Após o exordium (Cic., Dom., 1-2), ele discorre sobre si mesmo, sobre Pompeu e os pontífices (Cic., Dom., 3-31). 14 Segundo Cícero (Dom., 69), os pontífices se reuniam para defendê-lo e foram acionados pelo senado, por iniciativa de M. Bíbulo, a fim de garantir que nenhuma oposição à restituição integral da casa do Palatino poderia ser feita, por Clódio ter agido sem base legal ou religiosa (nihil legibus, nihil religionibus, nihil iure esse actum). Seguem-se ataques ad hominem a Clódio e às suas ações políticas e legislativas (Cic., Dom.,, com referências à sua gens e a desqualificação da sua adoção pelo plebeu P. Fonteio, em 59, e de seu tribunato (Cic., Dom.,(32)(33)(34)(35)(36)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42), que fazem com que Clódio surja violando tanto o fas quanto o ius. Se sua adoção fora irregular, consequentemente suas ações como tribuno da plebe foram ou ilegais ou, no mínimo, questionáveis. Segue-se a caracterização do exílio de Cícero (Dom., 43-53) como um privilegium, as circunstâncias violentas da adoção da lex Clodia de exilio Ciceronis (Cic., Dom.,(53)(54)(55)(56)(57)(58)(59)(60)(61), em que Cícero (Dom., 62-64) se apresenta como um "bode expiatório", e a seção se encerra com a narrativa dos eventos e ações subsequentes (Cic., Dom.,. 15 13 Gildenhard (2011, p. 300-326) analisa a justiça dos deuses, a relação entre religião e política, a teodiceia ciceroniana e o tema do Clódio furens. 14 Pompeu apoiara publicamente não apenas a lex de reditu, mas também o apelo de Cícero (Dom., 25) aos pontífices com sua presença no momento do discurso, e Júlio César, o pontifex maximus, estava na Gália. 15 No início de 58, Clódio fez promulgar a lex de capite civis Romani, que especificava que água e fogo deviam ser negados a quem matasse um cidadão romano sem julgamento (Kelly, 2006, p. 108; 110-124; 190). Sobre a lex Clodia de exilio Ciceronis, a segunda lei de Clódio, que Cícero define como um privilegium, ver Stroh (2004, p. 316-318). Esta segunda lei previa o banimento permanente de Cícero e incluía provisões para a dedicação de um altar para a Libertas no terreno da casa do Palatino. De fato, Cícero (Sest., 73) não nega que ambas eram, tecnicamente falando, leis, mas põe o acento na violência com que foram promulgadas. Libertas e concordia espaço, representação e poder no mundo romano LIBERTAS E CONCORDIA: DISpUTA pOlÍTICO-RElIgIOSA NAS ESTáTUAS Estudos recentes já demonstraram o uso religioso de imagens inclusive nos próprios textos sagrados de diferentes religiões. 20 Contudo, as estratégias para tornar o divino presente e acessível, e sua dependência de discursos verbais que configuram a imaginação e o pensamento dos fiéis, às vezes para limitar ou tornar ilícitas certas formas de uso de imagens, é algo que demanda mais pesquisas. A interação entre as imagens, a imaginação, as referências e esforços para a apresentação visual e para dar sentido ao divino são temas que vêm trazendo novas contribuições ao entendimento das percepções da cultura visual em diferentes religiões. Na República tardia, longe de nos movermos em estruturas religiosas seguras e há muito estabelecidas, somos levados a um mundo no qual as dinâmicas e a própria semântica religiosa estavam na ordem do dia e eram disputadas. Recentemente argumentei que três modos principais de lidar com estátuas divinas podem ser detectados na obra de Cícero (Beltrão, 2021a). O primeiro é a estátua como objetivação dos deuses, materializando a presença divina, exemplificado nas menções à Hermathena da villa de Túsculo em cartas a Ático (Cic., Att., 1, 1, 5; 1, 4, 3; Beltrão, 2018a). O segundo modo é quando a estátua se confunde com a divindade, tornando-se uma estátua "animada", por exemplo, no caso da estátua de Júpiter na Terceira Catilinária (Cic., Cat., 3, esp. 19-22; Beltrão, 2020a) e da própria Libertas de Clódio expulsando deuses domésticos legítimos da casa de Cícero (Dom., 108), uma criação da performance do orador (Beltrão, 2021a). O terceiro modo, por sua vez, refere-se ao uso da estátua como ferramenta para se pensar e conceber os deuses, que exemplifiquei no debate teológico em De natura deorum sobre a relação entre a figura material e o pensamento do divino (Beltrão, 2018b; 2020b; 2021b). Aqui estão em pauta as estátuas da Libertas e da Concordia em De domo inseridas no terceiro modo ciceroniano 20 Ver, por exemplo, os estudos reunidos em Arnhold, Maier e Rüpke (2018).

In this article we analyze the cer- emonial ritual of the supplicia canum cele- brated every year in commemoration of the assault and defense of the capitol in 390 BC by the Gallic Senones of King Bruno. To do so, we first analyze the imaginary of the dog in the Roman world. Based on this imagi- nary, we will focus on its functionality in cer- tain rituals or ceremonies that include the sacrifice of dogs and, finally, we will address the meaning and symbolism of the dog in the supplicia canum. During this event in ear- ly Republican Rome, it is said that the dogs that were supposed to warn the sentries fell asleep and that it was the geese, associ- ated with the goddess Juno, who sounded the alarm. Such narrative constituted in the etiological discourse of the city an exem- plum that was transferred to a ceremonial where dogs were sacrificed and geese were adorned.

An "East Greek" bowl in Orvieto - The article examines a bowl of the Phoenician-Cypriot type from Tomb K 136 at Crocifisso del Tufo (Orvieto), the location of which is still uncertain. It was discovered in 1878 by Riccardo Mancini on land owned by the Bracardi family. The bowl retains the morphological characteristics of the original Near Eastern “cosmopolitan” versions, probably adapted in line with the influences from East Greece that arrived in Etruria in the first half of the 6th century BC. However, the bowl is a unique piece in terms of its high level of quality compared to other examples of this pottery class, owing to the unusual form of decoration of the outer surface, and especially the painted decoration inside the bowl, in the Eastern Greek style. Rather than a vessel designed for the purposes of funerary ritual, the K 136 bowl was possibly a prestige object decorated by a sophisticated artisan who had relocated to Etruria around the mid-6th century BC (perhaps based in Vulci). The vessel may have arrived in Orvieto as a result of a gift, or some other form of exchange between urban elites.

Nell'avvicinarmi alle iscrizioni relative a sacerdotesse in territorio sannita una delle prime evidenze che ho notato è quella relativa al sintagma sacerdos prima, che rientra nelle titolature di alcune donne di rango nell'Occidente romano dei primi secoli dell'era volgare. L'espressione in esame, per le epigrafi di origine italica, appare usata esclusivamente in iscrizioni provenienti dal Sannio (geograficamente inteso, e non secondo la ripartizione in regiones augustea) 1 . Nel quadro della ricerca connessa mi sono imbattuta segnatamente in un gruppo di iscrizioni beneventane, per lo più databili ad età severiana, e * Sono molto grata ad Alessio Guasco e all'amico di una vita Nello Parma per il coinvolgimento nel densissimo incontro su Samnium e Samnites. L’opération archéologique réalisée à Kembs en 2021 a livré de nouvelles données relatives à l’agglomération routière de Cambete, étroitement liée à Augst, capitale des Rauraques, pour laquelle elle joua, entre autres, le rôle d’avant-port. Les parcelles fouillées, localisées en bordure du Rhin, recelaient les restes d’une vaste nécropole tardo-antique ainsi que plusieurs édifices publics. Si les données relatives à cette fouille préventive sont encore en cours de maturation, les premiers résultats permettent d’ores et déjà d’offrir de nouvelles perspectives sur l’occupation tardive de Cambete et d’entrevoir le lien étroit qu’elle entretenait avec les pouvoirs politique, militaire et religieux.

In occasione dei lavori per la realizzazione di un impianto FV da parte di Ecosicily 8 S.r.l. denominato Sessa 15-24 nei mesi di maggio 2024-gennaio 2025, sono state eseguite attività di archeologia preventiva prescritte dalla Soprintendenza ABAP per le province di Caserta e Benevento, dirette scientificamente dal funzionario dott. Domenico Oione. L'area di intervento, nel Comune di Sessa Aurunca (CE), ricade nella zona a ridosso dell'SP283 che collega le frazioni di Carano e Piedimonte Massicano, in loc. Feroni, un'area messa a coltura fin dall'età arcaica e che ha subito importanti trasformazioni dell'assetto agrario grazie all'organizzazione politico-amministrativa imposta da Roma a seguito della conquista, prima tramite l'apporto di coloni e, poi, con la fondazione di colonie di diritto romano e latino. Le indagini preliminari nelle aree 1 e 4 hanno previsto la realizzazione di 29 saggi. Di questi, quelli contrassegnati dai numeri 13 e 15, sono risultati archeologicamente positivi, mentre i restanti hanno evidenziato stratificazioni afferenti le fasi eruttive del sistema vulcanico Roccamonfina. Il saggio 13 ha restituito due dolia posizionati all'interno di due buche ricavate nel banco naturale, già precedentemente ed in una buona parte distrutti dall'azione dei mezzi meccanici, come indicato anche dai frammenti trascinati e rinvenuti nei solchi arativi connessi. La ceramica maggiormente rilevante relativa l'area dei due contenitori proveniva dal superiore strato arativo, che ha restituito, in particolare, un orlo di terra sigillata Africana D, relativo ad un piatto Hayes 67, forma tipica del IV e degli inizi del V secolo d.C. Il saggio 15 ha restituito resti sia di epoca repubblicana che di epoche più recenti. L'ampliamento settentrionale, ad una quota di -0,70 m dal piano di campagna, ha consentito la messa in evidenza di un canale, verosimilmente adoperato per lo scolo delle acque, composto da 12 tubi fittili allineati, lunghi 0,42 m l'uno, dal corpo cilindrico; questi, in mancanza di ulteriore materiale che consentisse una collocazione cronologica precipua, per confronti formali sono databili in un arco cronologico, seppur ampio, che ha come terminus post quem l'epoca medievale. Ben più rilevante, invece, è stato il rinvenimento di una fornace ricavato nel banco naturale; all'interno, sono stati individuati quattro livelli di riempimento, di cui il secondo mediano è risultato essere il livello di riempimento della bocca della fornace oltre che, per la presenza di un alto numero di frammenti di concotto misti a terra argillosa, lo strato di crollo della cupola. I livelli superiori hanno restituito frammenti ceramici cronologicamente non dirimenti, pertinenti per lo più a grandi contenitori (dolia), ceramica comune da mensa e dispensa e infinitesimali dilavati a vernice nera, non inquadrabili in alcun tipo noto. Alla fornace è associato un canale relativo alle fauces, i cui livelli obliterativi hanno restituito per lo più frammenti laterizi e qualche diagnostico di comune da mensa e da fuoco; di maggiore interesse sono risultati essere una coppa emisferica serie Morel 2780 (2783/2784), di produzione nord campana e afferente l'officina c.d. atelier des petites estampilles, un peso da telaio a sezione trapezoidale ed un cilindro cuspidato in bronzo. La messa a sistema dei frammenti, ed in particolare il dato cronologico fornito dalla coppa a vernice nera, hanno consentito di far risalire l'obliterazione del canale e delle fauces, con la dismissione della fornace, entro il secondo ed il terzo quarto del III secolo a.C. I dati acquisiti hanno permesso di ricondurre i rinvenimenti all'interno delle frequentazioni ampie che caratterizzano l'area che circondava il centro di Suessa, un tipo di insediamento rurale (villa), composto da impianti produttivi e pertinenti la deduzione di piccoli agri Una fornace dall'agro aurunco. The paper presents and analyses a newly discovered limestone altar dedicated to the god Liber, found in 2018 during the cleaning of the Rakitnica riverbed in Rogatica, Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The monument, which is currently housed in the premises of the Tourist Organisation of the Municipality of Rogatica, contributes to the understanding of religious and cultural practices in the Roman province of Dalmatia.
The aim of the paper is to provide a detailed description and analysis of the monument and its inscription, with an effort to contextualise it within both micro- and macro-regional frameworks. Special attention is given to the meaning of the epigraphic text and the context of the cult of Liber in the province of Dalmatia.
Through analysis of available data and comparison with other monuments from the region, the study seeks to offer answers to questions related to the function and symbolism of this monument within the local economic and social landscape of ancient Rogatica.

Germanii şi austro-ungarii trebuiau să atace din două direcţii pentru a ocupa această zonă. Lupte grele se dau pentru Măgura Odobeştilor care era cheia poziţiilor româno-ruse. Căderea ei în mâinile duşmanului a dus la pierderea Focşanilor şi a Văii Putnei. Oraşul Focşani, reşedinţa judeţului Putna, va fi ocupat de armatele Puterilor Centrale în noaptea de 25 spre 26 decembrie 1916/7-8 ianuarie 1917, ca de altfel şi cea mai pare parte a judeţului Putna, 50 comune din 80 fiind ocupate. Românii şi ruşii, după pierderea Măgurii Odobeştilor şi evacuarea Focşanilor s-au retras pe linia Suşiţei, Putnei şi a Siretului. La 28 decembrie 1916/10 ianuarie 1917, Inaltul Comandament german dădu ordinul de intrare în defensivă. Războiul de poziţie, cu bombardamentul şi acţiunile lui locale se va menţine pentru o jumătate de an (1).

Tomás de Kempis (em latim, Thomas à Kempis), nascido por volta de 1380 em Kempen, na atual Alemanha, e falecido em 1471 no mosteiro de Agnetenberg, perto de Zwolle (Países Baixos), foi um monge agostiniano, místico, copista e escritor espiritual. É amplamente conhecido como o autor da célebre obra "Imitação de Cristo" (Imitatio Christi), um dos livros mais lidos da espiritualidade cristã ocidental depois da Bíblia.

Entrou jovem no mosteiro dos Cônegos Regulares de Windesheim, ligados ao movimento da Devotio Moderna, uma corrente espiritual que enfatizava a vida interior, a humildade, a meditação da Paixão de Cristo e a reforma da vida religiosa. Passou quase toda sua vida nesse ambiente monástico, como copista, mestre de noviços e escritor.

Tomás era homem de grande piedade e vida recolhida. Evitava as disputas teológicas e o prestígio mundano, preferindo a meditação, o silêncio e a instrução dos irmãos. Sua obra reflete essa espiritualidade interior e prática, centrada no desapego do mundo, na humildade e na união com Deus.

Faleceu em 25 de julho de 1471. Embora nunca tenha sido canonizado oficialmente, é venerado por muitos como um santo e modelo de vida contemplativa.

Obra principal:
A Imitação de Cristo: atribuída majoritariamente a ele, foi escrita em latim no início do século XV e é composta por quatro livros. Apresenta conselhos espirituais sobre a humildade, o desprezo do mundo, a importância da comunhão e a imitação da vida e sentimentos de Cristo.

The study of terra sigillata pottery in our region is still in its infancy since so little information from the province of Dacia has been published so far, much of it being incorporated into bigger syntheses along with the analysis of other kinds of Roman pottery. We can observe how the quality of research has improved over the decades (beginning in the first half of the 20th century) and how the quantity of the finds has increased since then. The concept of terra sigillata as a dating tool in archaeology should no longer be the only aspect discussed in the literature. However, in order to achieve a relevant result, the publication’s methodology can be just as significant as its content. This paper employs a methodological perspective to identify distinguishing characteristics, errors and approaches in the historiography of terra sigillata research in Roman Dacia.

The present paper discusses a military diploma fragment discovered in the principia of the auxiliary fort at Călugăreni / Mikháza on the eastern limes of Dacia superior, in the destruction layers related to one of the weapon deposits (armamentarium). The fragment of the diploma dates between 133 and 142 AD. Taking into account the perfect cut, which was obviously intentional, and the late 3rd century AD context, we can conclude that it was prepared for recycling.

This study analyses the economic and social life of the city of Terracina (ancient Anxur) in the Roman era, through a systematic examination of epigraphic evidence. Based on a corpus of 339 inscriptions from the Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum (CIL) and catalogued in the Epigraphic Database Roma (EDR), the research investigates professions, trades, public offices, legal status, and social mobility dynamics. Particular attention is dedicated to the role of freedmen, acts of euergetism, and the epigraphic representation of economic activities. The qualitative analysis of a representative sample of inscriptions, directly examined in this study, together with quantitative data derived from the entire corpus selected for numerical analysis, reveals an urban fabric characterized by a certain degree of artisanal specialization, a marked presence of individuals of freedman status active in local economic sectors, and significant manifestations of euergetism. The issue of the so-called "epigraphic silence" concerning specific professional categories, particularly those related to port activities, is critically addressed in light of new evidence, suggesting future research perspectives oriented towards an integrated approach combining epigraphic, archaeological, and prosopographical sources.

Based on the theme Forgotten Perspectives of History, this presentation will address the “forgotten perspective” of women's participation in Roman religion, more specifically the female imperial cult in Hispania. When we think of women in general in classical antiquity, in this case in the Roman Empire, we have that stereotypical view that women had little participation in Roman society, and that their contribution to society was restricted to the domestic context as wives, housewives and mothers. This lack of a social role applied to the religious context because they were supposedly forbidden to perform acts such as the sacrament or drink wine undiluted in water. These restrictions lead many of us to assume that women had no religious participation, since sacrifices and drinking wine were practices that were part of religious festivities. However, this view generalizes too much because there were exceptional cases to the norm, namely the flaminicae or imperial priests. They were priestesses appointed or elected individually by a province, convent or city within the Roman Empire (with the exception of the capital, Rome) to worship certain deities or deified imperial figures. In this paper I will contextualize the origins of these priestesses, demystify some parallels that are still established between the flaminicae or imperial priests and the flaminica Dialis, as well as define this priesthood by explaining the various administrative and honorary titles, the requirements to join, the clothing, the duties, the benefits and their importance at a socio-economic, personal and family level in local, conventual and provincial communities. Therefore, I will focus on this cult, since it is the Roman female cult with the largest number of epigraphic records, demonstrating the fundamental religious role of women in Roman society, in the evolution and subsistence of Roman urban centers outside the capital. For this reason, it was one of the only contexts in which Roman women could stand out socially. In addition, due to the vastness of the Roman Empire, I will focus on Hispania because of the geographical link between my research and the Iberian Peninsula.

Gnosticism speaks the language of memory, distortion, and return. Through ORT, we uncover its deeper truth: that the Pleroma is a coherent field, the Demiurge is a distortion generator, and Sophia is a memory signal trapped in fragmentation. Gnosis is the moment a spark remembers the pattern it came from. This synthesis restores Gnosticism as a field-recovery system for awakening coherence in a broken lattice.

During Roman times, many Egyptians were recruited in the Roman
imperial fleet. Moreover, most of the merchants and the sailors of the
Mediterranean Sea came from Egypt and the East. Egyptian sailors and
merchants worshipped the Greek sea god Poseidon and rarely the Greek
god Proteus. This paper aims to throw the light on the deities, whether
gods or goddesses which were particularly regarded as divine patrons of
the sea, sailors and sea voyages. It aims also to analyze the various marine
religious festivals and their rituals in Alexandria during the Græco-Roman
period. Isis became the guardian of the ships and their owners. During
the Græco-roman period, Isis was named “Stella Maris” that means “the
star of the sea” and survived into the 6th CE. Numerous inscriptions inform
us that Isis was addressed as a marine goddess as Isis Euploia, Isis Pharia
and Isis Pelagia. In Alexandria, Isis Pelagia became the consort of Serapis
and was the protector goddess of the island of Pharos. Isis-Tyche was also
regarded to be the wife of God Serapis and was assimilated with Isis Pharia.
The serpentine form of Isis Thermouthis and Serapis Agathodaemon
appeared on the sacred cultic pitchers of Isis which were used during
the festival of Isis Navigium.  Aelius Aristides described Serapis as: “Serapis
is great on sea”. Many letters were written by the sailors mentioning that
they were protected by Serapis and Isis. Serapis was regarded also as
an oracular god and a protector of travellers by sea, perhaps because
of his association with the great port of Alexandria. The Serapeum of
Alexandria was built on a rocky spot called “akropolis”. Being seen from
all sides from the city below, this site probably functioned as a sea spot
for sailors of the Mediterranean Sea. A Greek myth described Egypt to be
one of the cult centers of Poseidon who came constantly to the island of
Pharos in Egypt. Many historians confirmed the existence of a temple for
Poseidon in Alexandria nearby the Roman Odeon. In Greek mythology,
Proteus was responsible for guarding the sea herds of Poseidon. He came
constantly to the island of Pharos in Egypt and his cult center might be
centralized on this island

A pesar de la ausencia de fuentes literarias que ofrezcan información sobre las características y esferas de acción de las divinidades locales del norte hispano, consideramos que las diversas formas de denominación de estas divinidades y la utilización de los epítetos también locales en los formularios de los dioses clásicos buscaban articular la comunicación entre la esfera humana y divina. Tal y como se ha indicado para otras religiones politeístas, como es el caso de la religión griega, la riqueza de los diferentes panteones del norte hispano, en particular los del noroeste, pone de relieve su fluidez y complejidad, y deja entrever las múltiples estrategias de los humanos para comunicarse lo más eficazmente posible con la esfera divina.

This work studies epigraphic testimonies referring to the cult of Genius as a protective divinity of the civic communities in Hispania citerior. The aim is to understand the role which the cult of this divinity may have played in the cohesion of different civitates in this provincial territory. Using the comparative method, we attempt to trace the differences and similarities which can be observed in relation to the other two Hispanic provinciae: Baetica and Lusitania.

Several public buildings in the city of Rome and its immediate environs are associated with the empress Livia, who officially commissioned their construction or renovation: most notable is the Porticus Liviae. While her building activity has often been cited as part of the official Augustan construction programme, emphasising her role as ideal Roman matrona, Livia’s benefactions have never been properly investigated in their social and historical context. The present paper seeks to remedy this by placing Livia’s buildings into the wider field of female building activity in late Republican and Augustan times, thereby offering a new interpretation of her role in Augustus’ programme.

Este trabajo analiza las inscripciones de los conuentus Cluniensis, Asturum, Lucensis y Bracaraugustanus dedicadas a divinidades locales. Su estudio se enmarca en la expansión del hábito epigráfico y la religión romana provincial y se centra en examinar las fórmulas epigráficas que nos permiten identificar prácticas rituales romanas asumidas por la población local en el culto y comunicación con los dioses.
This paper analyses the inscriptions from the conuentus Cluniensis, Asturum, Lucensis and Bracaraugustanus dedicated to local divinities. The study is contextualized in the expansion of the epigraphic habit and provincial  Roman religión and pays especial attention to the epigraphic formulae related to Roman ritual practices assimilated by local population for the worship and communication with their gods.

In The New Despotism (2020), John Keane explored middle class complicity in the rise of authoritarian governments, the trade-off being the voluntary servitude of that class in exchange for comfort and security. This chapter explores parallel phenomena in Late Republican Rome: the role of communal compliance with authoritarian solutions to political impasse; more importantly, the general disinclination (and/or sense of inability) to contest the loss of political freedoms; and, most significantly, a resultant disillusionment with public life, manifesting in a debilitating 'fractionalism' which paid ever-decreasing deference to shared values or willingness to engage in a non-violent manner with alternative thinking. The result would be the Augustan primacy (in effect, the death of what modern scholarship defines as the libera res publica, the Free Republic). Episodes from the 160s to the 50s BCE illustrate the development of such collective and individual dispositions, and expose the growing alienation(s) of the broader community and, we would argue, a crisis of confidence that might be discerned within the political elite. Special attention is given to the mounting political disenchantment evident in the 50s, particularly the escalating incivility of public discourse and the signs of pessimism in Cicero's De Re Publica. Note: We would like to thank the three editors for their invitation to join a stimulating and broad-ranging symposium with lively exchanges. What would have been two papers here becomes one. The paper was written long before the unfolding events in New York in May 2024, resulting in a former American President becoming the first to be found guilty on criminal charges by a unanimous New York jury (May 30th) and the clear demonstrations, both before and after that judgment, of a broad disregard for the judicial process (based principally on party political allegiances and ideological differences). This resonates greatly with our section on 'The Erosion of Trust.' On November 5th of that year, during the week in which the final draft of this paper was submitted, a clear majority of voters judged that the shadow of adverse judicial findings was not of overriding consequence in determining political sentiment and alignments. This does not shape appraisal of the factors at play in Rome in the 1st century BCE, but it adds perspective.

Our study presents a medieval battle knife discovered near Gruișor, Mureș county (Fig. 1), a type of weapon which was widespread in Central Europe towards the end of the Middle Ages (15th–16th centuries). Earlier studies considered this type of knife as „rare” in Transylvania,* but lately the number of these artifacts which entered museum collections has increased considerably, although most of them were found by metal detectorists. Even if their place of discovery is known, the archaeological context is missing, hence they are usually neglected by researchers. The weapon recently found at Gruișor might be associated with the szekler insurrection from 1562.

Although Julian, the last pagan Roman Emperor, also known as ‘the Apostate’, spent only a maximum of eight months in Athens, probably from April to November 355, these months marked a very significant period of his life. In this paper I sketch out the real significance that Athens
had for Julian’s biography. Then I discuss some passages where he mentioned Athens or the Athenians and ask which image of the city and its people he wanted to evoke and for what reasons.

The religious landscape of the Roman Empire has long been interpreted as a pluralistic field, where polytheism, henotheistic tendencies, and various forms of monotheism coexisted and interacted. One of the overarching powers within this religious environment was the Reichsreligion—the religious laws and traditions of the Romans. However, interpreting provincial forms of religiosity has posed a significant methodological challenge to scholarship for an extended period. The concept of
religious glocalization offers a new methodological framework for examining provincial Roman religion. This article presents several case studies from the Danubian provinces of the Roman Empire to illustrate the dynamics of religious glocalization.

Poena cullei has long attracted great interest among scholars (especiallylawyers, historians and anthropologists). The Roman sanction for patricide involving sewing up the perpetrator in a sack with some animals and drowning him in the sea terrifies and fascinates at the same time. This text shows that for the ancient Romans poena cullei was never a punishment in the modern sense. It was a ghastly quasi-religious ritual to cleanse society of the taint that the criminal had brought down on everyone. It did not lose its character even when Christianity became the ruling religion in Rome and retribution became the primary purpose of criminal punishment.

This paper offers the list of local deities recorded in the Latin epigraphy of
the conuentus Lucensis and the Spanish territory of the conuentus Asturum and Bracaraugustanus. The repertoire was completed after the direct examination of the religious inscriptions with local theonymy preserved in the northwest of Spain, specifically in Galicia and the provinces of León, Zamora and Asturias. The final objective is to review and update the list of local theonyms in the northwest of Hispania citerior.

Analizirane su neke od ključnih osoba i lokacija koje se mogu naći u igri, kao i građevine koje se nalaze u sklopu tih lokacija.Archeogaming is a relatively new branch of archeology, and this paper covered Assassin's Creed: Odyssey to see if video games like this can be used for traditional archeology, education of history and how could they affect the people who play them. Some of the key peoples and locations that can be found in the game were analyzed, as well as the buildings located within those locations

There is nothing specifically Sabine in the name of Appius Claudius and its archaic or local version Attius Clausus. The Claudii could claim Sabine origin due to their estates and clientele beyond the Anio. The agnomen Regillensis shows the link of the gens Claudia with Lake Regillus in the vicinity of Tusculum. Behind the traditional story of the Claudian migration from the Sabine country lies an earlier version of their arrival from a Latin town allegorically called ‘Regillum’.

The early Christian mosaics of Athens were studied by Pangiota Asimakopoulou Atzaka in the 1987, and more recently in a monograph on Athens mosaics (from the 5 th century. B.C. to the 6 th century. A.D.), edited by Italian Archaeological School at Athens. Based on these studies, this contribution aims to illustrate the mosaics in the sacred proto-Byzantine / early Christian context.

We  present  a  study  of  the  passages  of  the  great  tragedians,  both  from  the  complete  works  and  fragments,  in  which  the  human  soul  is  mentioned  from  an  eschatological  point  of  view.  We  observe  the  ideas  that  these  poets  make  their  characters  say about what the human being experiences after death.  From  them  we  try  to  infer  the  concep-tions  about  the  Afterlife  and  the  human  condition  after  death,  which  existed  in  the  5th  century  BC  and were sufficiently widespread for the audience of  the  tragedies  to  understand  them  and,  someti-mes, even agree with them. Thus, the main aspects on which we focus are the question of the survival of the soul after death (either individually or imper-sonally),  under  what  conditions  it  does  so  (better  or  worse  than  this  life)  and  whether  this  destiny  is attainable for all or only for certain souls.
