![Fig. 1. Industrial fuel and electricity price indices between 1970 and 2008 [9]. Thermal energy management in the process industry is tightly intertwined with the changes in the industrial fuel price indices over time, but environmental concern has now become an equally Intensive research in waste thermal energy recovery systems in the process industry took place in the early 1970s, motivated by a significant industrial fuel price increase resulting from the Middle- East oil crisis. In the UK, the energy conservation demonstration scheme launched in 1975 led to more than 200 projects in areas such as waste heat recovery, the use of waste as fuel, improved process instrumentation and control, the application of heat pumps and CHP, improved process insulation, drying, evaporation and machinery drives [6]. Identification of heat sources or sinks, matching of sources and sinks and selection of heat recovery sys- tems were common practices in heat recovery studies. The in- crease in the energy price was reflected in the price of processed goods and the process industries in the UK lost competitiveness compared with Middle Eastern and central Asian markets. Indus- trial investments in energy efficient and heat recovery technolo- gies reduced the impact of the high energy price on the price of the processed goods. However, energy efficiency became less of a motivation for industry as the fuel price dropped again in the mid 1980s as illustrated by Fig. 1 which gives the evolution of industrial electricity and fuel price indices between 1970 and 2008. These price indices give price changes compared to 1990 level (index 100). The industrial fuel price increase in 2005 then resulted in renewed interest in more efficient use of energy. More precisely, the average UK industrial electricity price (excluding taxes) almost doubled in 4 years from 4.56 pence/kW h in 2005 to 8.66 pence/kW h in 2009 [7], while the price of gas increased by 30% over the same period of time [8].](https://figures.academia-assets.com/46485248/figure_001.jpg)

![Fig. 5. Pre-heater for combustion air from aluminium furnace flue gas. Source: Econotherm. Heat pipes can be used for low temperatures in the range 30-200 °C [64] but different characteristics of the working fluids need to be examined in order to choose the most appropriate one for low temperature applications [65]. In particular, thermody- namic properties such as high latent heat, high thermal conductiv- ity and good thermal stability define heat pipe design limitations while material compatibility is associated to extending the life of heat pipe operation. Modern heat pipe designs such as loop heat pipes, pulsating heat pipes and sorption heat pipes and their application were reviewed by Vasiliev [64].](https://figures.academia-assets.com/46485248/figure_005.jpg)

For example, despite special attention being paid to energy efficiency, a heat emitter does not often consider energy as a core part of their busi- ness. As a consequence of the secondary role it plays, energy is of- ten not monitored properly. In Small and Medium scale Enterprises (SME), the effort to introduce energy management has been impor- tant but its success remains very limited due to the lack of re- sources, expertise, financial resources and knowledge about the underlying principles involved in energy management [139]. Even though the potential for heat recovery may be small in each SME, such companies still represent a significant proportion of the low grade heat potential in the UK but also in Europe as underlined by the recent investigations on SME energy efficiency by the Euro- pean Commission which considers the SME sector as an important target for carbon footprint reduction and energy savings [140]. Also, there is a need for government measures to bridge the gap between industries and communities.
